Niall Power's collection of poetry and short stories blurs the line between reality and the surreal in an entertaining, metaphorical manner. Within the seventy-five poems included, the author's introspective observational style recounts his struggles with sobriety, relationships, and self-discovery. Nine short stories round out the collection in raw, sarcastic glory. In Distance, a recovering addict finds himself addicted to a new drug he never expected - a smartphone app. Slap Night explores the pleasure in pain with a character whose existence is questionable. These pieces and many more entertain and enlighten simultaneously and Power's remarkable ability to set a scene allows readers to feel each word.
I had the chance to check out the ARC of Fall Risk by Niall Power and it is a wonderful read for several reasons. The rhythm in his writing is unique, often incredibly melodic, which creates a very fascinating and captivating vibe since the stories he tells are not only genuine and admiringly raw but also with a powerful tone and a style that puts his heart right there on the page. The fact that this is his first book is amazing in itself, given that it reads more like someone who has been around for quite some time and not like a debut, and leaves me very excited to see what’s next for Niall. I highly recommend this book.
