When a young police officer is suspended, it leave him time to investigate both the murder of a prominent doctor and a connection to the heinous and brutal poaching of rhino horns. Under the guise of being a photographer, George will travel the wilds of North East India, witness both its beauty and its horrors.

Neilay Khasnabish’s THE POACHER is like a travelogue of the unique beauty of India. Told in rich detail, there is a feeling of actually being there. The mystery portion almost becomes secondary to the poaching, which serves as a heartbreaking expose on the murder of an endangered and beautiful animal all in the name of greed.

We must ask ourselves, how long do we pretend this is not happening? How long will humans destroy for their own selfish gains?

While this is not a smooth flowing read, due to the fact that English is not the author’s first language, this is a tale of the loss of some of Earth’s greatest creations through poaching. Take the time to feel what the author is feeling as he takes us through a land most of us will never see. A sterling effort that could use a little polish to cross the language barrier to tighten up this tale, but so worth reading!

I received a complimentary copy from Neilay Khasnabish!

Starting as a murder mystery and ending as one, this book has so many simple yet beautiful things in between which make it much more than a mystery.

As a reader, what I found out in this book is that the murder mystery comprises of less than 30% of the book. The rest 70% encompasses some mundane details and a lot of details which relate to wildlife in Kaziranga and their preservation. Hence, majority of the book comprising of wildlife culture in India.

The brief summary of the book goes this way: George is a police officer who is suspended because of the conspiracy of some people at the higher level. And during the tenure of his suspension, he goes off to Kaziranga to unveil the mystery behind the murder of the editor of a local daily. Supposedly, the publisher was murdered because of publishing something about the poachers. George takes up the post of the photographer of the 'The Kaziranga' and goes off to find the murderer. Then, there are beautiful descriptions of the wildlife out there and the problems that are being faced because of the greed of the poachers to sell the rhino horns and earn money. George has to go through various turbulences before he reaches the truth.

Written in a simple manner and descriptions being precise yet enough, this book was a quick read. Even though there was nothing grand about the setting of the book, the setting of Assam region with forests and wildlife descriptions provided a different kind of grandeur.

The characters aren't the strength of the book as they weren't that well developed, if you ask me. Despite that, they were not entirely uninteresting either. The protagonist and Chacha were well projected and that was just enough to make the story lively.

Written from taking inspiration from some real life experiences of the author in the forests and with the wildlife, this book is rather a refreshing read. The fact that the book talks about wildlife conservation makes itself all the more reason to read it. And the mystery didn't disappoint as well, even though the premise of the same wasn't that well set.

This book still makes a decent read and will be a treat to those who want to read about wildlife conservation in India.

description

I would firstly like to thank the author for providing me with a free ARC of his book in exchange for an honest review.

The Poacher is more of a travelogue than a story book. I have always just loved forests and national parks ever since I was little. So this book was a wonderful experience for me because as an Indian, I have never really been able to find myself with an opportunity to visit The Kaziranga.

The book isn't much of a long read at all. It was about 198 pages on my Kindle so that came out as a plus point for me since I had been looking for a light and short book recently.

The Poacher isn't a perfect book. It needs better editing, the characters aren't really ones with whom you can find yourself connecting with and somehow the writing seemed too bland. In fact, the beginning was really hard on me and I found it difficult for me to concentrate.

But during our protagonist's suspension, when he decides to go to the depths of the murder mystery of Dr. Hemant Saikia, I felt things begin to change. I have never been to the North East (India) before and so it was immensely refreshing for me to read about the beautiful state, Assam. And I have already mentioned earlier as well how much I enjoyed the whole Kaziranga theme, the beautiful descriptions of the wildlife. The author also delves into the disturbing world of poaching, the ruthless greed and inhumanity of the poachers. All that was really engaging.

What was even more appealing that all this is based on the author's real life experiences so it was really interesting to read all about it. It also being a sense of curiosity when something is based on reality. Of course, there were a lot of things that could be better but I loved how I got to know more about the Assam forests and the life prevailing in it.

3.5*

The book is a work of fiction based on wildlife and the severe issue of poaching in Kaziranga. Kaziranga National Park is the situated in Assam and is famous worldwide for rhinoceros, apart from that it has a variety of flora and fauna. Its one of the oldest and complex ecosystem in the world.
George Hazarika is a young police officer who has been recently suspended with a false allegation of corruption against him, he then comes across Jonali Saikia, the daughter of esteemed wildlife enthusiast Dr. Hemant Saikia, who has been murdered. The case got closed, but George finds a new clue and goes to Kaziranga, undercover to solve the mystery.

The description of Kaziranga given by the author is so rich and diversified. Reading this, I actually felt like visiting the place.

The story is simple and decent, somewhat predictable for me. At some places, it also felt a little slow, but he did keep the story interesting. The characters are nicely built. This book gives you a lot of information about the issue of poaching and Rhinoceros.

For me I really did enjoyed the theme of wildlife and fiction.

For me Ill recommend this book, it's highly informative and a must-read for all wildlife enthusiast.

Happy Reading.

I would like to thank the author, Mr. Neilay Khasnabish, for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Plot:
'The Poacher' is a story of an honest, truthful and sincere Police officer - George Hazarika, who is suspended from his duties on some false grounds. Before getting the suspension, George was part of a preliminary investigation team in the murder case of Dr. Saikia, a dedicated Wildlife Conservationist cum editor of a Magazine "The Kaziranga". Due to lack of evidence, the case is on the verge of closure. The suspension from the Police Service comes as a boon to George, as it gives him the independence to go to Kaziranga National Park and investigate the murder case freely. The book revolves around George's experiences inside the National Park, his learnings about the serious issue of Rhino Poaching, how he solves the murder case and helps in arrest of a Rhino Poacher.

My review of the book:
It's a simple, well-paced, light read book. One can easily finish the book in one sitting because of use of un-ornamental language for narration. The narration of the Kaziranga National Park is so vivid that at times, I felt that I was transported into the National Park and I was standing on the Watch Tower/ walking in the forests in a cold night :)

Though I enjoyed reading the book, I felt 'The Poacher', is more of a travelogue than a murder mystery. It would have been good if Neilay could have worked more on building the suspense and solving the murder case. There were some places where I felt the writer did not do justice to the plot - for example, the episode when George gets kidnapped and he convinces his kidnappers to free his hands/legs. Similarly, the episode of the encounter of Chacha with his second wife.

That being said, I think the book overall is nice, simple and enjoyable read.

All the very best Neilay Khasnabish for your future projects. Keep writing!!

REVIEWED BY SOHINEE DEY

‘The Poacher’ mingles mystery with wildlife to leave away a social message through the mystery plot. This fiction book is set in one of the major national parks in India, The Kaziranga National Park. The UNESCO world Heritage site is popular for the one horned rhinoceros and poaching of these animals is predominantly practiced.

Born and brought up in Assam, Kaziranga has always been a vacation spot in my early childhood. Apart from the one horned rhino, Kaziranga features a spectacular display of flora and fauna. With its dense forests and green meadows, Kaziranga offers a home for not only the rhinos but also several other animals.

The main protagonist of this book is a police officer, George Hazarika who has been suspended from his duty due to some conspiracy of the higher officials. He uses this time of his suspension to travel to Kaziranga. There he comes across a news of the murder of Dr. Hemant Saikia who was the editor of ‘The Kaziranga’. While in Kaziranga, he disguised himself as a photographer and didn’t reveal his true identity of being a police officer.

Saikia’s death has been put under the rug and the officer in charge had denied to further investigate on the matter. This brought Hazarika to the conclusion that his murder must be related to poaching in some way because Saikia never shied away from talking about it in his newspaper. This is where the murder mystery plot comes. On his quest of finding out the murder(s), the narration travels through Kaziranga describing it’s beauty and also highlights on poaching.

The writing style of the author was good but the narration at some places, lacked the consistent flow. Neilay Khasnabish has given beautiful description of the wildlife and Kaziranga as a whole. I was able to picturize the scenes. That was a really good thing about his writing style. The dialogues were good but they would have been even better if the characters were more expressive while delivering their dialogues. There were a few grammatical errors but they can be easily fixed with a round of editing.

FINAL THOUGHTS

‘The Poacher’ is more like a book on wildlife so, it doesn’t have a very strong murder mystery plot. I liked it. Coming across the familiar places mentioned in the book was nostalgic to me.

If you do like reading books on wildlife and nature, you can definitely give this book a read. The wildlife sub-genre is rarely experimented with in fiction. So, if I think of this book in that way, the storyline definitely has something new to offer.

I was given the chance to read and review this book "The Poacher" and I am glad I read it. The base of the story is about poaching which needs to be addressed effectively for the survival of the animal kingdom (the animal in highlight in this novel is the rhino in Kaziranga Park). I really liked the story a lot. The only negative factor about reading this book is the language doesn't seem to flow and could have been edited better. Otherwise, quite an enjoyable and more importantly it creates an awareness in us about the poaching situation. Looking forward to other books from this author.

[Detailed review at: http://thinkerviews.com/books/english...]

While we come across a remarkable number of books every now and then, not all of them are worth the money and time it cost. Some books are written with an intent to provide just the entertainment to the reader (and there is nothing wrong in it, one needs to get entertained and re-energized to live the life at a full) and some of them are written with a cause. It is seen that most of the books in the second category often becomes quite tedious and often mechanical. Sometimes reader may not be able even complete it. So, rather writing something like a documentary, if such books are written by adding some ingredients of entertainment, thrill, humor and other, it can prove to be a good page turner and the message the author want to convey spreads widely.

The Poacher - by Neilay Khasnabish is a fiction inspired by real events.

Preserving nature is not only our duty but necessity. And, this book tries to convey this message via a gripping thriller which explores the landscape and inner beauty of Kaziranga (National Park and near by places) along with the progress of a thrilling fictional story.

The Plot:
George Hazarika is a police officer who took his job quite seriously. Once he was assigned a rape case to investigate and he uncover the conspiracy to save the real culprits. These culprits are very well connected and thus George has to pay the price. He was suspended form the duty.

Heartbroken George was on the way to his home when he saw a girl was trying to be molested by some goons. George was in his plain cloths now, but he knew that the right things can be done with or without the uniform. So, he went ahead and save the girl. Later he came to know that the girl was Jonali Saikia. Jonali's father Dr. Hemant Saikia was a well-respected name in the circle of people who know him. He was running a magazine named "The Kaziranga". This magazine is famous for the authentic information it provide about the national park of the same name. From flora and fauna to the wildlife, Dr. Saikia's magazine doesn't leave anything.

While the wildlife and vast variety of trees, plants, birds and other aspect attracted nature lovers to the Kaziranga, some shady characters are attracted to it as well. The incident of the poaching of Rhinos raise at an alarming level and the authorities were trying to control them unsuccessfully.

Dr. Jagan Saikia used to write about such incidents fearlessly, and one day, he was assassinated!

George suspected that it is not a natural death at all, as the powerful people are trying to label it as. He decided to use his suspension as a cover and run an operation to uncover the mystery of Dr. Saikia's death as well as expose the racket of Poaching.

How he moves ahead in his plan and how his journey took various turns, is better to explore by reading the book.

Views and Reviews:
Though, the story is a fiction, the author has woven all his research work quite interestingly in the book. The way he talks about the wild life there or event the trees and plants, is interesting. You will love to read the way the Kaziranga national park is explored in the book. The way the elephant grass plays a role of a character in the book is quite interesting too. The author refers one of the important points, the availability of the weapons to the guards and those used by the poachers. While poachers come with AK-47, the guards are trying to keep the park and wildlife there, safe and secure using .303 rifles!

Neilay, explores the problems faced by honest police officers as well. George is the protagonist and his character is strongest in the book, obviously. It doesn’t mean that the other characters are given any less importance, or not talked about their qualities. Jonali is one of the strong female characters along with the [characters of] mothers of George. Yes, you read it right, mothers.

There are some character defining and inspirational lines in the book like:
Nothing is difficult for a committed person with courage and intelligence.
— — — — — —
Those who live for a right cause, live the life.

I also like the way a character is named as Monalisa, and in the last segment of the book, the reference to the mysterious smile of Monalisa is given.

The references to the flood, the balance the ecosystem requires, and many more points are simply a delight to read.

Summary:
I would give it 8.5 out of 10 stars.

“Those who live for a right cause, Live a life”

The plot talks about poaching of Rhinos for its costlier than gold in the beautiful Kaziranga national park situated in Assam. George Hazarika , a suspended police officer's desperate attempt to find the killers of Dr Hemant Saikia( a journalist who wrote a report on poaching).

The pace of the story is fast and the language used is simple -no fancy literature here but do expect some wildlife jargons which may want you to recheck your dictionary once a while. George being a soft spoken polite policeman is something hard to digest. I also did think this book could be improvised by further adding some literary touch- which seems missing. Though this book has its down parts, I felt this book gives you immense knowledge on wildlife.

Neilay has written this beautiful story with refreshing wildlife content. His interest in wildlife protection is clearly reflected and this novel is thought provoking- and brings a positive note at the end.

George's (Protagonist) love for wildlife seems to take me to the Sean Penn’s movie "Into the wild". Most of the parts were described in a true bliss like the way  Mantu explains the Origin of Kaziranga, were described in a true bliss. The parts where the character talking about poverty, polygamy and early marriage adds to the beautiful characterization where its time to call spade a spade- for the betterment of the world.

Without being heavy-handed, the book examines these serious issues, gently reminding readers that the natural diversity Kaziranga offers is at the mercy of man. The writing perhaps ventures into the land of the slightly mystically wild , but for anyone who’s ever grown close with the wild, the connection is undeniably real. Though Neilay's plotting is tight and his handling of the wildlife, his ear for the wildlife protection may be his most subtle gift

Highly recommended for someone who loves nature and wildlife protection and further wants to learn more about the deep rooted problems of Poaching.

Books with a backdrop of North East India and poaching are lesser explored. At least it is something new for me though I have read some books based in this region. The Poacher by Neilay Khasnabish is definitely a refreshing read for me. The plot revolves around the problem of poaching in Assam especially Kaziranga National park. It’s an interesting as well as thought-provoking topic. The effect is even more as the story is being narrated by someone who has got the first-hand experience of the problem prevailing in the area.
The solid plot is complemented and supported by some strong characters. One gets to know so many things about poaching as the book provides loads of information about it. Readers also get to know about the one-horned Rhinos, wildlife in general and other fauna and flora of the region.
The narration is interesting and the detailed description is enjoyable. However, the language is too simple and plain. But it did not hinder the pleasure of reading due to the content of the story.
The title and cover of the book are apt considering the plot. However, in my opinion, the current cover will not attract many eyes. It can be improved to catch the attention of the potential readers.
Overall, The Poacher is an interesting & enjoyable read and is recommended to everyone who wants to read something new.

Introduction:

‘The Poacher’, just like its title, is a unique book that I got in exchange for an honest review from the author. Since the title and the cover page look extremely unconventional and unlike any other books I have read so far, I was excited to read this one! And, true to its title, it is about the poaching of rhinoceroses in The Kaziranga. Here’s what the book has in store!

My Percepion:

The book deals with the grave issue of the poaching of rhinos in Kaziranga and explains its ill-effects in great detail. It also gives the readers a fun ride of the national park and its inexplicable beauty. But, apart from this, the book has a surprise element at the end that every thriller lover would love.

If you love wildlife and natural beauty, this one’s for you!

The Poacher by Neilay Khasnabish is a gritty tale that deals with Poaching. At a time when natural resources are fast dwindling, poaching is another evil that should be dealt with not just to protect the animals but also the ecosystem. The author's writing style holds readers' interested throughout ... he has woven his research and understanding of wildlife into this fiction real well. Makes for an interesting read for anyone who wants something new to read, loves nature, wildlife and a well written book!

I read this book on Kindle. Well, The Poacher by Neilay Khasnabish is a riveting read because I personally like the mix of adventurous and crime suspense novels. This book underlines the issues of poaching of one-horned rhinos in Assam's Kaziranga National Park. And in India poaching has been a consistent problem.

The protagonist of the book is George Hazarika, he is a sub-inspector but when he tries to solve a murder mystery of a famous wildlife enthusiast, he is then forcibly suspended from his job. Next, posing as a wildlife photographer, he goes in the park and then one by one unearths the poachers gang and also manages to find out who killed that famous wildlife enthusiasts. If you love Wilbur Smith books, then you must give a try to this book.

Having been born & raised in Assam, the author’s amateurish detailed description of the national park indeed made me nostalgic! The never-ending list of things about this place makes me proud to be an assamese. Two – Manas & Kaziranga National Parks - out of India’s eight UNESCO world heritage nature parks, are in Assam could be just one of the reasons.
Kaziranga being famous for its one-horned great Indian rhino inhabitants has been facing the pressing issue of killing & poaching of rhino horns to such an extent that with only 3,555 nos left (2015) they have been listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Neilay understands this plight and takes up this issue as the story-line for his 2nd e-book.
Nevertheless, the use of local words – baideo, dada (chapter 10), references of local flora – mimosa creepers (touch me nots), simul tree with red flowers, urium trees (chapter 15) & names of the places where I have literally grown up – has certainly brought back reminiscence of the past.

Review

This book is about a guy named George who is a police officer and got suspended at the beginning of the book and decides to investigate a murder investigation on his own. He goes to Kaziranga National Park and starts hunting for poachers who are killing Rhinos and are also responsible for the murder of the victim in his investigation. That is all about the book which makes a little sense and other than that nothing is making sense. I really don't know what to write in my review without sounding too harsh because this book really wasted 2.5 hours of my day. The narration was weak, I can't even count plot holes in the book, too many grammatical errors and bad storytelling. I will conclude my review by humbly asking the author to at least edit his book in future.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have given The Poacher by Neilay Khasnabish two out of five stars ⭐️⭐️
As per the description from Goodreads above, I enjoy reading about experiences from authors and can appreciate when an author has researched thoroughly into a topic, but unfortunately this book wasn't for me.
I found the storytelling didn't captivate me into the story, I thought it was quite rushed and the events that unfolded happened sporadically which became confusing. I found the writing to be stilted and the narration slow. I had to re-read certain parts of the story as I couldn't remember quite understand what was happening.
I found it hard to connect with the characters, especially the main character George Hazarika. I didn't find him fascinating or interesting, for that matter, so following him on the journey to solve a murder mystery was quite difficult to keep entertained.
It was interesting to find out about one horned rhinos and Kaziranga. I liked the description of Kaziranga throughout the book as I found it easy to picture the beauty of the place. This book definitely touched on my feelings towards poaching and I found myself becoming angry towards the discovery of the poachers in Kaziranga.

‘The Poacher’ is the story of a police sub-inspector, George Hazarika, who explores the hidden world of poaching. George, who thinks there is a link between the murder of Dr. Hemant Saikia and poaching, visits Kaziranga as a photographer to solve the murder mystery. Dr. Hemant Saikia was an eminent wildlife enthusiast and editor of ‘The Kaziranga’. George stays among the local people of Kaziranga and discovers many hidden activities there. Following all the clues that he got, he finally happens to solve the mystery. Although the characters are fictional, this work is based on the author’s personal experience and research on poaching at Kaziranga. The story narrates the menace of poaching that has endangered the existence of wildlife, especially the existence of one-horned rhinos.

Talking about real poaching stories through a book is the best way to convey the message of how we are destroying nature for our own satisfaction and needs. The book kept me hooked with its great storyline, and it was a fast-paced thriller with the message of saving animals from being killed. Great knowledge on wildlife, and I loved it! Must-read.
