Aerie Boone is a toad. At least according to every news outlet and online hater imaginable.
Accusations of lip-syncing. Rumors of being dropped by my label. Reports of celebrity feuds and rivalries. And then there’s my personal favorite… The pending annulment of a marriage I can’t even remember agreeing to. When you’re the sweetheart of country music, being a headline is a given. Living the headline is more of an uninvited surprise. I’m barely recognized for the massive success I’ve had. Now I’m famous because people love to hate me. I’m a public enemy, but no one knows my side of the story. I’m beginning to think it doesn’t even matter. I’m burned out, hurting, and everyone thinks I have warts. Ew. Becoming a shut-in is exactly what the doctor ordered. Too bad my label has other ideas. They send me a solution… In the form of a red-haired, green-eyed man who wears sarcasm like armor. I don’t want a stranger in my house. I don’t want Nate. All I want is to go back to a time when I wasn’t a toad. When I was country music’s princess. But going back is impossible. Moving forward will change everything.

Release Date: January 29, 2018 Genre: New Adult Romance. Musicians. Rating: 4 stars
I love everything that Cambria writes. I'm always excited when she releases a new book and will #1click whatever she produces. With that, I really loved Toad. It's a fresh, new adult romance between two very unlikely people. Aerie Boone is a country music star- one who is facing the scandal of a lifetime. Nate is the red-headed college student who has a knack for writing music. He's the cousin of Ten (previously written about in Butterfly), and lover of fruity pebbles. These two get together because Aerie needs a new music album to get away from the gossip and tabloids and Nate is going to help her write it. But it won't be easy for either of them. For one, Nate has this undeniable attraction towards Aerie and can't seem to keep a professional stance. And Aerie? Well, she's married. She just doesn't know how it happened! With juicy drama, and instant attraction, and one hello of a musician romance, this book is a must read!
** Side Note: I mention above that Aerie is married. Don't worry, this is NOT a love triangle. The circumstances surrounding her marriage mixed with the crap being told about her in the tabloids are thoroughly explained. There is no cheating or anything like that.
With that, this is another fabulous book by Cambria and I would certainly recommend it to fellow readers. In fact, she is one of my top 5 favorite authors and I would recommend EVERYTHING she writes. Her writing and stories are realistic, easy to love, and down to earth. Her characters deal with normal, everyday things, and their stories are told phenomenally.
*** While this book is the second book in the Public Enemy series, it CAN be read as a complete standalone. If you have read Butterfly, then you will recognize Ten who is a side character in this novel. However, you don't have to know Ten in order to love this one as Nate has his own love story and this is it. Feel free to read the series in any order. You won't feel like you're missing anything.
I was choosing me. To hell with what everyone else thought.
Pretty good read. The heroine starts off a bit stuck up, but it’s mostly a put on for the public. She thinks having that mean girl attitude gives her strength. The hero is quirky and not traditional alpha. He’s a protector, but not the way I’m personally used to reading. I liked him, but I also had a hard time picturing him TBH. None the less the read is good. I loved the heroine and her change or maybe less change and more becoming who she really is. I loved the romance and how these two just had that connection. That spark. I will say that the plot while interesting. It was a bit over the top at times. Which led to some OTT dialogue/situations that just didn’t work for me. All that said. It’s a pretty good read. If you’re looking for a book about two people who you don’t wouldn’t surface level put together, but somehow they work once they start seeing each other beneath the surface, then you will enjoy Toad.
Taking a line from the book, Toad itself is limited edition. With two strong willed main characters, plenty of laugh out loud jokes, and passionate moments that just make you go "awwwww". Also including an orange high fiving kitten and you got the ultimate recipe for perfection.
Toad is the second of the Public Enemies series, and although it's considered a standalone I highly suggest reading Butterfly first. Not only will you meet most of the characters that show up throughout the story of Toad, but you also learn to understand them and see where they came from. Also Toad quickly picks up where Butterfly lets off so it's easier to avoid confusion.
After receiving a job offer to write a new song, Nate is off to L.A. once again in hopes of truly jumpstarting his career. Meanwhile Aerie, an up and coming country singer, is having her career thrown in the trash with a bunch of lies from the media and a "marriage" that she doesn't remember participating in. Fate throws these two together in a way that couldn't have been planned any better, and two people who couldn't be more different on the outside find out that all the money in the world doesn't come close to the power of love.
Honestly I could go on and on about Toad but I wouldn't want to spoil any of the good parts. I knew when Toad was first thought of that it would be a special story and Cambria Hebert went above and beyond to prove that right. I seriously wish I could step inside her brain just to see how she thinks because these stories are priceless. So get on board the Nate Train and see what the fuss is about, I doubt you will want to get off the ride.
“Officer Flintstone?” I murmured as we both stared at the tape. “It was a prize in my Fruity Pebbles,” he replied. “I keep it in my wallet. Never know when it might come in handy.”
^ I literally woke my husband up laughing whilst reading this line. The humour and banter coursing through the pages was exciting and hella funny. So many one liners had me laughing out loud.
Nate isn’t your usual main character, he wasn’t perfect, all American jock with the “Adonis” looks, he was real. He had red hair, was addicted to his favourite brand of cereal and had next to no control over his mouth filter but he was probably one of the best MC’s I have read in a while (excluding all Ms Hebert’s Books).
I loved how we seen Aerie grow, when we first met her she was rude, aloof and very self centred but once you get further into the story and see all those later pulled back, it was heart breaking to hear all that she went through.
Aerie and Nate are one for the record Books, I truly recommend for all to read this masterpiece.
I love the story!!!! It`s amazing, funny, and very entertaining!!! Once you start reading you begin to lose yourself in the characters and the story... you`re captivated!!! The best part of the story is the chemistry between Nate and Aerie! I really enjoyed watching their relationship take off then blossom! They`re so amazing together! The story brings out all these feelings within you and I didn`t want it to end you`re never really ready to let go so you sit there just taking it all in just to keep that first time feeling! When a story is that good you know it will be a part of you forever the story is so amazing and memorable! I just want to say thank you to the author for doing such a fantaastic job and for giving us your readers another book and family to fall in love with and keep with us forever! I always look forward to readng your books .. because its like ive come home to family and friends that ive been away from too long and have missed alot! Thank You!!!!
So I read all 8 books in the #hashtag series by Cambria Hebert and mostly enjoyed them, so I decided to read Toad by her as well. What I really like about her writing is the there is usually some really great drama unfolding, outside of just the romance stuff. In that aspect, this book didn't disappoint. While the queen of country (Aerie) is falling for songwriter Nate, there is a very conniving villain (Will) who was trying to trap Aerie in an abusive marriage and thus... let the drama begin. My only hang up being when the main character (very attractive, successful, etc) falls SO quickly for a nerdy type, sometimes it seems a little far fetched. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the budding relationship between Nate & Aerie and the extra drama brought on by Will kept it interesting. So 4 stars overall.
This huge, goofy guy that is obsessed with food, especially Fruity Pebbles, stole my heart in Butterfly. And here he just kept on doing it until the very end.
Nate is big, funny, a little bit sarcastic guy with huge heart and with this need to shield and protect those he cares about. He's not a typical hero. He's so much more. And he reminded me that it's not all about looks and money. Love is about caring, laughing and being who you really are.
Aerie a beautiful country singer which had her fair share of bad things happen in her life. There is this inner strength around her that she doesn't even realize it exists. She comes off as arrogant in the beginning, but it's only a shield to protect her fragile heart that has seen so many loss already.
There were some unexpected twists and turns and although this book is NA college romance, it's way more than that.
Toad by Cambria Hebert is definitely a book about opposites attract, and redemption!
If you’ve read Butterfly (another Public Enemy stand alone by Cambria Hebert) you’ve met Nate before, as Ten’s cousin, and the one who helped him write some songs for his hit album. Now Nate is back and has his own book, and it is amazing! Nate has the opportunity of a lifetime to write a song for Aerie Boone who has had it rough the past few months. She’s been in the spotlight and not for her music. She trusted the wrong man, and he’s taken her reputation down, and now Aerie is drowning and trying to redeem herself. Her tough exterior is just a facade and not who she really is, she’s been beaten down and just trying to survive most days and find herself again.
Nate is trying to make a name for himself and to start his career, while Aerie is trying to get out of a marriage she doesn’t even remember getting into, and saving her career. She doesn’t want anything to do with Nate at first, but to save her career she knows she has to work with him, and the more she’s around him, the more she begins to find herself again. I adored watching her start to loosen up and not be so uptight when she was with Nate, and I loved Nate’s carefree banter with her, and how he didn’t treat her like she was the superstar that she is. Nate knows she has something she’s hiding but doesn’t push to get it out of her, he knows she’ll come to him when she’s ready.
Watching Aerie struggle with everything Will has put her through and continues to put her through was hard to read. No one deserves what she has gone through and my heart broke for her, but throughout this book she starts to find her strength and she realizes that not every person is out to get her. Watching her start to fall for Nate when she least expected it was beautiful, especially since these two are complete and utter opposites on paper, but they just seem to work together.
Seeing how protective Nate was of Aerie and how he’d do anything for her, even after just meeting her, made me swoon and I fell hard for his goofy boy next door character. This story was unique, and beautifully written. I loved how Cambria Hebert developed these characters and how they both got their HEA together and individually. We got to see them both chase their individual dreams as well as figure out where they belong in each others lives and deal with the struggles that brought them together to begin with.
If you’re looking for a new adult romance that has a bit of angst, suspense, and a lot of laughs, then Toad by Cambria Hebert is definitely the book for you. I truly adored Aerie and Nate’s story!
I can't even put into words how much I loved this book, but I'm going to try a wee bit. I'll write a full review later but this is probably my absolute favorite book that this author has put out since I first read #Nerd by her. (Different series!) That is saying a lot considering I haven't found a book of hers that I do not like, or have no loved. Toad just sparked something in me. The characters are equally fantastic and flawed. Nate is a whole other level of book boyfriend that will have you wanting Fruity Pebbles, and wish he was real. I thought Aerie was amazing as well, but Nate really does steal the show. Limited Edition doesn't even cover him. ;)
Oh my goodness.....Nate, Fruity Pebbles and this book? All totally fantastic!!! I loved Nate and Aerie's story. Nate's personality, charm and protectiveness won me over from the start. Despite Aerie being a famous country singer, her life was anything but easy. Nate and Aerie's had great chemistry and their relationship grew and strengthened with ease. Nate would do anything for his Princess, making him super swoon worthy in my book. This book had mystery, intrigue, drama, scandal, love, passion and a happily ever after. I read this book in one sitting and would highly recommend it.
Great, great story by Cambria Hebert. I enjoyed Butterfly last year where we were introduced to Nate’s character. He is not the usual male characters we read in books today. He is your average, everyday great guy with a talent of song writing. He wasn’t your popular college athlete with women falling all over themselves. His love of fruity pebbles was crazy but funny. His relationship with Aeria was believable and sweet.
I hope we will one day get a story for Derek, Nate’s dad.
So after reading the hash tag series I didn’t think I could love another couple like I do Rimmel and Romeo . Then Butterfly with Ten and Violet’s story slayed me. But Toad? Aww Aerie has my heart. I love how she has to learn it’s okay to fight against the bad and Nate?? White Knights everywhere cheer for Nate! Thank you Cambria for another winner
Finally a man who knows the awesomeness that is fruity pebbles! 😂 For real though I think I loved Nate a little more b/c he loved my fave cereal. Nate was fab! I loved how genuine, kind, loving and protective he was. He and Aerie were perfect for each other. I hope we get to see more of Nate and his princess and Vi and her butterfly in the future.
The heroine was a drama queen, had angry tantrums and endless pouting that got on my last nerves. The hero was a red hair beta type of dude. He was hilarious with a dry sens of humor, but he had no sexual appealing to me whatsoever.
But, I liked this (new) author (to me) writing style and therefore I'm giving this book three stars. I'm gonna wait for her next one.
I loved Nate in Butterfly and my love for him grew in Toad. I loved Aerie. She has a lot of baggage to deal with and Nate wants to be there for her, if she’ll let him. Nate is a goofball, but he also has a tender and protective side. He and Aerie have great chemistry. This was a very satisfying read.
I am DNFing this book for now. I see that it gets high marks, and I LOVE Cambria Hebert. I just didn't like, nor connect, with the characters. So, maybe this is a case of-it's me not the book. I will pick this up in a few weeks and see if its any better.
Gosh that was a great read. I really liked Nate and Aerie. They were both likeable characters and their story was good too. It was the perfect book to read on a rainy Sunday and it helps that Cambria does writes great stories.
Continuing a great little series - this is Nate's book - the cousin of our badly behaved rockstar in book 1. Nate meets the bad girl of country music - but is Aerie really as bad as they make out, or just made one bad decision too many.
I fell in love with Nate while reading Butterfly so I was so happy that he was getting his own book! I love him even more now. I’m a huge fan of Cambria’s books and this one didn’t disappoint! He’s funny, sweet, alpha at times and totally lovable. He and Aerie are perfect together. I loved how their relationship came about.
I loved the first book in this series a lot, so I was really looking forward to reading this book! I grabbed a copy as soon as it released and I wanted to read it as soon as I had my copy, but I had a few books to finish reading first! I then made this book my next read as soon as I could! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book just as much as the first book! The plot also only took me few sittings to read, even though I tried to take my time reading it so it would last longer lol! I loved the plot a lot! The romance in it was very beautiful and pure and it made me smile more and more as the plot progressed! There were a few seriously hot scenes between the two main characters too! There were a few twist and turns to keep things interesting as well and these added a lot to the plot! The plot was also different to what I was expecting, but I loved the direction that the author took it in and it ended beautifully and at the perfect place! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Aerie was the main female character, and in this book she was singer that had made a name for herself and was very popular! Aerie then went through a lot in this book, both in her career and in her personal life! I did feel sorry for her because she was pushed around by a guy that thought he controlled her, but Aerie really found her strength in this book and she stood up for herself and defended herself! Aerie was also very easy for me to connect with and I found myself loving her more and more as this book developed! Nate was the main male character and love interest of Aerie! Nate was a secondary character in the first book in this series, so I was excited to read his story and go inside his head! I loved Nate a lot in this book! He was such a goofy, funny character that had a heart of gold! There was also something about Nate that made him different to male characters in other books that I've read and I think it was because he wasn't the seriously hot, famous guy that everyone knew! Nate was just a normal guy that was down to earth and wasn't full of himself! He was also very protective of Aerie and showed this again and again in this book! I loved that this book was written from both Aerie and Nate's point of views! I was hoping that it was going to be because the first book in this series was written from both characters point of views, so I was really happy that this book was too! It helped me connect and understand Aerie and Nate more and it allowed for more things to happen in the plot too! I'm also not sure if there's going to be more books in this series! I can't find any information on more books on the author's website or on Goodreads, but I really hope that there is more books! I've really enjoyed these two books and would love to read more! I still can't wait to see what this author is going to release next and I'll definitely be reading regardless! The cover for this book is also amazing! I love how well it matches the cover for the first book and the title of this book! The simplicity of the cover would definitely draw me to it and make me want to read the story behind it too!
Note to self: - Dual POV - Sequel to Butterfly; different characters - Ten’s cousin Nate. - Prologue: Book starts out with Aerie waking up in Vegas hungover (?) realizing she got married the night before to her ex (?) - Will. - Nate gets a call from Ten saying someone from a record company wants him to write a song (I think this was Aeries husband’s (lol) record company - Aerie is trying to get the marriage annulled - Will is abusive and threatening - Will threatens Aerie to stay with him but she refuses and resigns with her record company instead of his like he wanted - Will starts rumours with the press that Aerie cheated on him and has an STD - Nate asked Aerie if she’s married or not. She says no. (I’m not sure if he was asking her if she was married in her heart or if she was really married?) - Men break into Aerie’s house. Nate goes to investigate/protect Aerie. One of the guys gets away but he stops one. - Nate has to go back home to NY for school but he tells Aerie that she’s coming with him because he doesn’t want to leave her alone after the break in - Will and Aerie were never actually, legally, married. There was video of them at the chapel and she was clearly not sober (most likely drugged) and was still refusing to marry him or sign the papers. Will forged her signature.
Things I liked: - NATE! - Nate cuddling with Aerie: “I didn’t know what to do. Did I just lie there and not move? What if I rolled on her? What if I started sweating… Oh shit, what if I farted?” - When Aerie meets Violet. Violet makes a comment about apologizing for how she’s dressed but its how she’s always dressed (or something like that) and Aerie notices she’s wearing a college sweater: “Nate was stepping by, and I noted the same sweatshirt in his hand. I snatched it. The second my head cleared the neck hole, I told Violet, “Now we match!” “I hope I don’t get cold,” Nate said as he flipped open the top of a nearby pizza box. We ignored him.” - “‘How do you feel?’ she whispered … I was so nervous my hands were getting clammy. Without thinking, I let go of her hand and wiped my palms down the thighs of my jeans. ‘You make me nervous.’ The words spilled out, and I wanted to bang my head on the keys.” - Nate “broke” wills face - Authors Note: “And if I’m honest, he totally reminds me of Stiles from Teen Wolf… which used to be my favorite show. Dylan O’Brien is bomb.” - YAASS! I love Stiles!!!! - I really liked that there was no unnecessary drama between the two characters… no stupid misunderstanding, no break up.
Things I didn’t like: - Aerie never totally won me over, but I didn’t not like her either.
