In a world where Disney's greatest villains have been condemned to live in exile on the Isle of the Lost, Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay -- four descendants of these evildoers -- are given a chance to redeem themselves and prove they are greater than the sins of their parents by attending Auradon Prep and living among the good guys. Seeking this chance for glory, the Villain Kids hatch a plan to steal Fairy Godmother's magic wand and free their parents from captivity. Will the rebel teens follow in their parents' footsteps or will they choose to embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?
This full-color manga adaptation of the hit Disney Channel original movie collects all three volumes of the Disney The Rotten to the Core Trilogy manga.
On the one hand, the artists did a fabulous job transforming the live-action Descendants telefilm into manga form. Unlike other comic adaptations I've read from Tokyopop--both of Disney shows (Lizzie McGuire, Suite Life of Zack and Cody) and other series (Totally Spies!)--this isn't just screenshots with speech bubbles and sound effects added in; these are actually hand-drawn depictions of the DCOM, and very beautifully done. It almost feels like the Mouse network meets Studio Ghibli.
On the other hand...do we really need another adaptation of the first movie? If they were going to do a tie-in manga, why not do an original story and expand the Descendants universe, much like the Thrawn trilogy did for Star Wars? The ads in the back suggest that later Tokyopop publications do just that; I'll have to seek them out...and soon.
This is pretty much a graphic novel of the movie, but without the songs. The artwork is vibrant and really quite lovely. If you liked the movie, you should love this adaptation. Highly recommend.
I love this! Technically I've only read the first two books so I'll review those. I love how they are filling time that the movie skips. Like, the first book had The Core Four 🍎 just exploring Auradon! We get to see Jay actually STEAL CHAD'S LAPTOP! I love how amazing everyone looks too! Every one is just so adorable! (Except Chad...😒.... me no likey Chad...) I'm loving how they translate songs to dialog! Like rotton to the core is so different, but I think I like it better! I'll add more once I finish book 3!

Nice adaptation of the movie. I liked the small scenes they added for depth because they couldn't have the songs. However, something about the art style gets to me, the expressions aren't very clear and most of the time they characters look the same every time they are supposed to express a different emotion - like anger or sadness. Also, I'm not sure if it's just me but Lonnie and Audrey looked almost identical face wise.
Okay, so I'm probably rating this a little higher than needed, but I've been in a huge reading slump, and this was one of the only books I could get through, so it gets a higher rating by default.
The story itself is pretty typical for a middle-grade book about high school drama. The illustrations are colorful and really, the best part of the story.
I don't usually read manga or comic books in general but, I love everything Descendants! The book follows the movie well although there are some extra scenes as well as some dialogue changes The artwork is stunning! A must for any Disney Descendants fan!
I’m a huge descendants fan , and i love this book alot . It combines the disney channel classic with manga , and i love that ! Also , it has alot more of storyline in it , rather than the songs. I honestly love it !
It's okay for a kids book, personally I didn't like how all the female characters are motivated either by looks or relationships they felt very flat. But I did like the moral about how we dont have to be our parents, we can be better.
