When two hungry dinosaurs jump into a time machine, they're transported to an unbelievable, magical, surreal future: RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW! On the T. Rexes' madcap voyage into the unknown, they encounter the many wonders of the modern world: Police cars! Phones! Microwaves! They don't know how they'll get home—but why would they want to?
Two T Rex buddies get into a time machine - and discover fast food today! Loved this! This book is strange enough that it will appeal to a very wide audience (if you like strange books)! there are times when I just want to read something that really does not need an explanation; and this book is a great example of that type of book!
From the author that brought us Vegetables in Underwear and Fruits in Suits comes this silly story about two dinosaurs who find a time machine and go on a delicious adventure.
I'm not quite sure what age group this is aimed at, as some of the jokes will rely on kids' knowledge of things like voice-activated smartphones and microwave ovens. I have a feeling that, though older kids will probably understand more of this book, they might think it's kind of silly. And it is... but in a good way. Watching the dinosaurs gleefully realize that there's food around every corner (and a "sun in a box" that cooks that food in seconds!) reminds us about the things we take for granted, but it doesn't hit the reader over the head with a preachy message.
The illustrations are simple. Maybe a little too simple for my taste. But they still manage to capture the dinosaurs' feelings as they navigate their "future" of bountiful food choices. The ending is a fun twist. Overall, this is a fairly strong picture book, and though I'm not in love with the illustrations, they work well with the story.
Everything I love in a great children's book: creativity, intelligent humor, great illustrations, fun layout... what's not to like here? I'll be looking for more from Jared Chapman, this was a really enjoyable read that I'll be sharing with the kiddos in my life.
Although this picture book is just too absurd for my tastes, young readers will most likely giggle all the way through as they consider the reaction to two dinosaurs traveling through space and time and arriving on Earth in the future. The fact that they are drawn to places that smell like food isn't surprising as they chase after burgers, pizza, and donuts. As they observe, life is a whole lot simpler when there is no hunting involved and the food comes to you. When they manage to make their way back to the spacecraft and travel somewhere else, readers' imaginations will be tantalized at the possibilities of their encounter with someone who not only walks and talks like an Egyptian, but is a ruler. Oh, boy! I wonder what that encounter will be like. Reading this one was silly, delightful fun, and I was charmed by the simple illustrations.
Thanks to #kidlitexchange for sharing a review copy of this book! T. Rex Time Machine by @jaredchapman Releases September 4th. . Join these dinosaurs as they travel through time. It is a very funny book with a lot of dialogue. . My kids thought it was SO silly to see the dinosaurs finding fast food and treats for the first time! We weren’t sure if they would even care about getting back home! Yum! . The illustrations are very funny and will keep you laughing! The only problem is ~ Now I want a donut or ice cream after reading this! Haha. .
Original concept, amusing. I dunno why I wanted its internal logic to be more realistic. I guess the notion of dinosaurs accidentally traveling through time is so fascinating to me, I'd like to see how it would play out if it were real dinosaurs. That's so not the book's fault, though.
I know, I know, this is a kids book and I shouldn't take it too seriously
that being said, join me in taking this too seriously
premise? fun, creative: dinosaurs accidently travel to the modern world artwork?solid, clear, clean plot? loose, illogical, incomplete
now we arrive at my questions: ~ how do the t-rexes (t-rexi?) know what tacos, subs, and cakes are? ~ can they read English? ~ what happened to the time traveler at the beginning of the book, trapped in "prehistoric times"? ~ how did the microwave finish cooking when it was unplugged? if it wasn't unplugged, how did the cord reach so long? either way, why did it pop open when the timer finished? ~ finally, more of a concern than a question, I feel like the time machine could use some more work on its controls
in conclusion all in all, this is a silly kids' book. I know that children's books do not need to be complex works of art, but I appreciate it when they have a bit more of a plot than this. if your kid wants to read an illogical story of a dinosaurs encountering food in a modern setting, go for it. otherwise, I would suggest spending time with a different book
One of those books that seems like it would be a little funnier for adults than kids. I wanted to be more clever than it was, but anyone who likes dinosaurs will still enjoy it.
Two T. Rex end up in a time machine and come to the future. They discover how much there is to eat and how easy it is to get food. They enjoy all sorts of treats but have to hurry back to the time machine to go home. Unfortunately, they don't know how to make the machine go. It solves the problem by misinterpreting something said and whisks them off to another adventure.
Goofy and hip, with retro, colorful illustrations. It's the rare kid who doesn't love dinosaurs, and this story of two hungry T. Rexes who accidentally teleport into our food-obsessed modern society will have kids giggling.
This really surprised me! I thought it was going to be terrible but instead actually had me giggling like 2-3 times! It’s not... a great book, but if you like dinosaurs and time machines, why not?
