James Bond’s superior, code-named M, scrambles MI6’s secret agents across the globe. Sometimes, he knowingly sends them to their deaths, for the greater good. But a traumatic event from M’s early days in the field returns to haunt him, forcing M to return to the scene of a crime…HIS crime.
With the Dynamite comics Ian Flemings 007 has been revived and unlike its cinematic outing feels much fresher and offers better story lines.
After last years Moneypenny stand alone we now get the M stand alone and it is without any 007 appearance. This is about his boss the unknown character called M, and it is not Flemings M but the modern day fella that carries the moniker. It is something from the history of this M that finally caught up with him and it makes him go back to his military roots in Ireland where he is blackmailed into breaking the agreement that ended the war between Ireland Northern Ireland. The man is called M and for a reason he got his job being the the MI6 boss.
This expanded 007 universe is actually quite well done even if it Flemingesque at times it is not quite my cup of tea. But I understand that 007 does not enjoy tea and that with EON not delivering any coherent new 007 movie that the comics are all that we get in the 007verse. Unless you count the new book by Horowitz in a few months.
Dynamite Comics the comic book print house that creates new material of established media. Over the last 6-7 years since they began to publish the comic book series featuring James Bond in a contemporary setting, the franchise has spanned several original stories and several spinoffs featuring notable Bond characters. The M in these Bond stories is a different character from the one that we have been seeing in the movies. A career soldier who is not afraid in taking strong decisions.
This short story is a compelling side story about M and is a standalone with no presence of Bond. Every bureaucrat has skeletons in their closets and M seems no exception except here we see him being forced into actions that he does not condone. The story seems smooth for most parts except the end which seems too vindictive and a trifle irresponsible. Although it is keeping in line with the other Bond books in this universe, the stories being more grisly and the violence very spot on and ruthless. This was for me a middle of the path book and hence the 2 stars. As an extremely short story - 10 to 15 minute read the book is fine.
A short story about a skeleton in M's closet that comes back from the past. This story does a good job of putting a moral dilemma in M's past that impacts how he leads as the head of MI-6, tasked with sending agents into danger and potentially creating more danger to others through their actions. I like the Dynamite version of M, a little more likely to get involved in the action but still an imposing figure behind the desk directing Bond and his fellow agents.
This was poor in almost every respect. M as a character was horribly mis-portrayed, the art was functional at best, and the writing was atrocious. To suggest that one group of homicidal maniacs in Northern Ireland is not so bad - or at least not as bad as - the other is an insidious, deceitful and downright dangerous message to put out there: those of us who lived through the 'Troubles' know well that the whole lot of them were vicious fundamentalists with scant regard for human life. For M to hand an admittedly very bad man over to one such group is lazy and pathetic storytelling, hence the terrible mis-portrayal of the character. For many years, the Bond novels and movies stayed well away from Ireland for good reason: ignorance of the subtleties of Irish politics and anti-religious conflict, and a reluctance to taint 007 with the sectarian quagmire in Northern Ireland. What a shame Dynamite allowed two cack-handed creators (who - and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here - as Irishmen should have known better) to go there and produce this superficial, malicious, and possibly disingenuous narrative.
Bond evreninin esas oğlanı elbette 007 James Bond'dur.
A good interesting take on M but it was far too short, I thought it was a prelude to another story but that was it ? Hence the three stars ~ It was a good one none the less.
This short comic presents a backstory for this version of M. It is pretty good and gives some depth to his character. My only complaint is that it is so short.
Was fun to read a non James Bond James Bond story. The comic version in general has flashed out m in a much more distinct way. He's not background, is actually a character. This is solid.
M the head of MI-6. The ever changing but eternal mind behind the missions of 007. Chained to his desk issuing orders, M seems little more than a jumped up bureaucrat . But M is not. He is a soldier Who spent time in N. Ireland during the troubles Which is the cute way they Refer to the bloody Decades long civil war. A secret form his time There comes back to haunt him. To threaten him now Years later. He deals with it not like a soldier. But Like a spy. With a brilliant Brutal Clever solution. A great spy comic. Dynamite continues to Astound with brilliant 007 stories. Even ones he’s not in.
