I tracked down a copy of this obscure novel after reading an impressive short story by Signe Toksvig in a 1920s WEIRD TALES. Alas, the book is nothing special though it's odd enough that I'm not sorry to have read it. It is a supernatural romance with promising villains and an exotic setting in the Basque country, but either the author or her era keep it from being as gripping as it might have been with just a little more emphasis on the dark side of things. As it is, it's worth reading and I'm still interested in finding more of Toksvig's work, her folklore and fairy tales being potentially more interesting than her more mainstream efforts. Recommended with reservations.
