Jake Laughlin is a crusty, middle-aged cowboy, content with his life except for having to deal with an old mossy-horned, red-eyed, ornery, bent on destruction Longhorn cow. Through a series of unexpected events, Jake ends up with the ability to fulfill all the dreams of his youth at a time when he, in his maturity, can truly appreciate it. He just has to deal with the Longhorn cow known as “Bad Bertha” once and for all.
Jake Laughlin a forty five year old cowboy, originally from Boston, Massachusetts, left home at the early age of fourteen years old, on his way to become a cowboy, who only bathed once a year, if that takes in to consideration how bad he must have smelled..my goodness. His Uncle Finn passed away, leaving Jake as the only family alive. Uncle Finn's estate after all his bills were paid, left Jake over five hundred thousand dollars, which was a lot of money in those days. While Jake was in Dallas, where he was to meet his Uncle's lawyer who had handled all of Uncle Finn's estate, set Jake up to be murdered so he could embezzle Jake's inheritance. Poor Jake, while enjoying his third beer, Jake felt wozzie, and he figured the bartender had slipped a "mickey" into his beers, and Jake knew he shouldn't feel that way. He had notice two shady characters watching him, so he decided to retire early, letting those thugs think that the "mickey" worked so they could murder him in his hotel room..it didn't work. This is a fast moving adventure and you'll enjoy reading this adventure...and the characters are enjoyable and funny. GOOD JOB🎵
This story starts off a little slow, but do not get discouraged as things hit full bore rather quickly. Finishes with a special flair that will appease your appetite. I am consistently impressed with Mr. Parks and his wonderful tales of real old western adventures and I guess he has me hooked for life.
Very worthy of the five stars awarded, as the storylines and characters certainly appeased my appetite for excitement. I am consistently impressed with all of Mr. Parks adventurous significantly detailed stories , as they freely unfold before the individual, while they are glued go what happens next. Now that was a mouth full!
I, most assuredly, recommend this book, and all other stories by this very gifted and talented author. His precise storytelling is surpassed by few, if any other writers of old western adventures. Please, give Mr. Parks stories a try, as the loss will most definitely yours, if you fail to follow thru.
I usually read some westerns mixed with the mystery and suspense books and history books I prefer. Some of the westerns are too filled with blood and gore, women being kidnapped and raped, body’s strewn everywhere. I sort out the authors who generally write this way and avoid their books in the future. This particular book was just a fun read, a crazy longhorn, a cowboy avoiding bathing to often, good clean fun. Loved it!
I do believe I'd have had a difficult time being around the Jake-that-was!!! And I don't understand why Bertha wasn't beef stew early on but it wouldn't have been the same story without her.
Jake Laughlin's Second Bath in the Same Year by Cherokee Parks is book Three of the series. It's a different kind of western without the gunfights. It has humor and a sweet romance.
Another in his series. I enjoy an easy read now and then, and this book was just that. None of his three books have the same characters, but all are good reads.
