Hunted as a human for his vibrant aura, Daniel held all the lethal promise Narivous looks for in a Velore. His color was both bold and bright, his potential limitless. He had the makings of one of the strongest undead Narivous has ever seen.

Until he’s turned in a forbidden way.

Resurrected from a poison death, he now has a toxic touch and a wail violent enough to eradicate all creatures within screaming distance. He is as his aura promised—dangerously powerful. Almost too much so.

Thorn, Narivous’ tyrannical queen, has outlawed the making of his clan, for good reason—their powers are beyond her control. The toxin roiling beneath his flesh makes him a threat but, worse yet, Thorn sees Daniel as a symbol of rebellion. He represents more than disobedience, he represents a rift in her realm.

And that places Daniel in a precarious position. Thorn will stop at nothing to restore her omnipresent image, and there are only two ways to do break Daniel, or destroy him. Daniel will soon be tested—become Thorn’s monster, or suffer death for a second, and final, time.

WOW! I am so glad I got these books together. The first (Colors of Immortality) had really drawn you in wanting more and with no waiting I had (Shades of Death) on hand to continue this amazingly creative story. It keeps you involved with such twists you don't expect. It draws you in, bringing out your imagination and making you feel you are right there. Rooting for characters you never thought you would. I certainly hope there is another one because I want to know more. Love this.

This is the first book that I have read by J.M. Muller and will not be my last. I had not previously read the first book in the series, Colors of Immortality Series, or the sequel Colors of Immortality. This can be read as a stand-alone book like I did but was so good that I will be going back and reading the first book in the series. This is usually not my normal ‘cup of tea’ type of book, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I did enjoy it and the author’s writing style. The legend in the back of the book was a big help in reading and getting background information as well, so I would recommend reading that at the beginning actually.

You could say this is a twist on the Zombie book, movie craze that seems to sweep everyone away, but I can assure you that it is so much more than that. Muller is a artist with her words. She brings to life a world that can only exist in a mind that is crawling with an imaginative world just itching to be let out. I felt the forward or ‘disclaimer’ at the beginning of the book was a cute way to describe how I often though of J.M. Muller and her writing as I was reading this book:

“This story was derived from a mind that enjoys fantasy a little too much and is completely fictitious. Any similarities to living people (or dead, for that matter) is entirely coincidental and should be deduced as pure happenstance. The opinions expressed by the protagonist (who isn’t real) or the villains (who REALLY aren’t real) – and every character in between- belong to those characters and not the author. This work is true fiction and should be treated as such.”

Daniel is dealing with his new powers so to speak. His touch is dangerous and well extremely deadly. His scream is violent and promises death to those within earshot, and it reaches far and wide. He is not known for his good, much to his dismay. These traits are just prime examples of why the queen of Narivous, Thorn, has outlawed him and his clan and any future clan to be made. Thorn also sees Daniel as a threat to her rule and will stop at nothing to put a stop to him, and his kind, in order to gain back control of her world and rule. This leaves for lots of great imagery and adventure to be had. There is also a deep draw on the behavioral society that is fascinating to read as well. I just can’t bring myself to give much more away of this story so you will have to one click and see where this book can take you on your own for more details. I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed and will be one-clicking the other book, if you haven’t already read it in this series.

Shades of Death by JM Muller is the second book in her Colors of Immortality series and what a fantastic follow up to this unique series. Continuing the story of Daniel, he is having to adjust to his new life, where he is only allowed to venture out on the grounds at night and only allowed to go certain places during that time. Daniel has a problem though, he can’t stop thinking about the love of his life that he had to leave behind, and can’t stop wanting her. But wanting her and going after her can put her into a very dangerous path. Is Daniel willing to risk everything that he has always wanted just to risk the possibility that his love will stand by his side? The darkness that now surrounds Daniel is just waiting for the right moment to pounce, but will the opportunity to endanger Daniel’s family and love be the right incentive to bring Daniel down? Muller is a fantastic author, that kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning of Colors of Immortality, and I couldn’t wait for this book to come out. Her characters are well written, and her storyline will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. There is something about each of her characters that I could connect with, which made her story that much better. I can’t wait to see where she takes this series in the future, because I will be buying any new books that come from Muller knowing that they will be amazing just like this one. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a new spin on the dark and twisty genre. This is definitely a series that needs to be read in order, so it is very important that book one be read first, Colors of Immorality, as this one continues right were the first leaves off. If you are looking for a great author with a unique writing style or a great new series that will leave you biting your nails and gasping for breathes between page flips than this is definitely the series and author for you!

Book One, Colors of Immortality, was a fabulous read: original and very well written. But book 2, Shades of Death, takes things to a whole new level.

Like I said in my review of Colors of Immortality, J.M. Muller has created a unique world with unique fantasy characters. Technically, this is a twist on the overdone zombie craze. But I cringe saying that since Muller's zombies are nothing like you've seen before. They aren't brainless, walking dead flat characters. These are a rich, complex new type of being complete with emotions, backstory, and depth. The hidden world in which the Velore live, Nervous, is so well constructed through Mullers use of descriptive language that the reader not only can imagine what it looks like, but what it feels like, smells like—the fear and pain—this world Thorn created as a twisted attempt to heal herself and these creatures from their past. And in doing so, she has become their mother, their god.

And that bring me to Thorn. In the Legend of Colors of Immortalitywe learn Thorn's backstory, giving dimension to what could have been easy left as a simply pure evil flat character by lesser writers. Muller gives reason for what she has become, why she does what she does, and why she chooses the ones she "blesses" with her supernatural gift.

But as much as I love this story—this world and all of its characters—the thing I love most and can't get enough of is Muller's ability to use the written word in such a powerful way. Every sentence, every word, feels carefully chosen to articulate the images in her mind in such a way that they become your own. Her talent is awe-inspiring. My only regret is how long I'll ave to wait for the next installment.

Please, if you read this series (and you MUST read this series), DO NOT skip the Legends at the end of the books. They include important backstory pertinent to the experience!

a great read about threats and danger. Daniel was made into a velore, an immortal being with supernatural powers. when he is made into one of the Poison clan against the law of Queen Thorn, it spins in motion consequences for those he love. made into an outsider, he struggles to cope with new powers in a new forest society. after accidently releasing his powers in the woods, he becomes even more dangerous to Queen Thorn and must please her to protect himself and those he loves. will he be able to fix his mistakes and save those he loves or will Queen Thorn continue to reign supreme?
a great read. well developed plot with twists and turns. full of suspense and tension and danger which captivates you to keep reading. an excellent example of a sequel improving the series with new powers for the Poison clan. a beautiful fantasy novel with magic and vilains in a secret forest land. well developed characters like Daniel struggling with new powers whilst protecting those he loves and trying to manage the grief of losing his grandmother. his struggles and emotions were perfectly written and made you sympathise with his situation. characters were deepened from the first book like Torti or Dreams being more caring towards Daniel. or Scream as a motherly figure to Daniel was a sweet touch. I also adored the visual detail throughout the novel in the forest and the waterfall which were vibrant and full of nature in the air. I also loved the details of the palace, like the poison room in its black and lifeless nature contrasting beautifully with the vibrant blues and photo filled ice room of Polar. in particular, the scenes in the graveyard under the moon combining beauty and spooky together perfectly. the minute detail on the tombstones were excellently written. Overall, a brilliant read and I would give it five stars.

Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality Series Book 2)
By: J.M Muller
5 out of 5 stars

The story Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality Series Book 2) by J.M. Muller continues the story of Daniel Thatcher. I so enjoyed the first book I could wait to read this one. The story begins with Daniel becoming one of the strongest Velore and also one of the most dangerous. He has become a threat to the image of Thorn, the queen of Narivous. Will Daniel be able to convince Thorn not to destroy him? How far is Daniel willing to go in order to convince her? Will he become a monster in the process? I really love the character of Daniel. He deeply cares about his friends and family and feels guilty if something happens to them because of what he does. As his powers are new to him, he does take actions that are reckless and dangerous that sometimes backfire. I felt bad for Daniel as it always seems that he is constantly in danger from Thorn. He is a very likable character one that I wanted to succeed in all that he does. I also felt his pain when situations happened that were beyond his control or when he realized he was being manipulated. Thorn, the queen of Narivous, is a woman who is cold, calculating, and in some cases just plain evil. She is obsessed with her image and will do anything to keep those under her rule in line. She frequently uses deceit and fear to control others. Many of the other characters that you read about in the book are ones that were introduced in the first story. While there are those who support and even take risks to help Daniel, there are others who work against him. When it comes to Thorn there is always an atmosphere of danger and fear in the air. This is a story I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the last page. A wonderful next book in the series.

So, I stumbled across an intriguing cover and one-clicked and devoured that story. I have been waiting for book 2 for over a year and a half and it's finally here!

Shades of Death released yesterday and I sent that story to my kindle as fast as my fingers could click buy. I've been waiting for this book. I needed to see what was going to happen next.

J.M. Muller blew me away with her debut Colors of Immortality and the way she is able to tell a story with such an elegant flow of words. I would have to say, Shades of Death may be even better.

I devoured this story. I could not get enough of Daniel and everything that is happening in his life and of the Velores around him.

Family, love, loyalty, right and wrong, honor, deception. and power are just a few things in Shades that pulls you in for an intense and mesmerizing suspenseful paranormal that will blow you away.

I also have to add how much I love "The Legend" that the author adds to the end of the book. It's a fantastic back sight into the character's lives, but also gives the readers another little story that pulls you in and readies you for more.

Muller is honing her craft more and more and this is only her second story. A fantastic author is lying behind these masterpieces and I cannot wait to see what else she brings to us.

Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality Series Book 2) by J. M. Muller is the second book in her Colors of Immortality series. I highly suggest that you read the first book first to help you understand and enhance your enjoyment of this series. I enjoyed the first book and I enjoyed the second even more. Her writing skills are creative and made me feel as if I was with the characters. There was some twists and turns in this book that left me sitting on the edge of my seat. Her characters took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that I didn't want to stop. Her characters are both connectable and true to life. This is Daniel's story. Daniel has been learning to adjust to a new life. He is only allowed to roam the grounds at night and in certain places. His problem is that he can't help himself from wanting his love. What happens when he becomes a pawn in this game which certainly has consequences. Will an evil use his love for his family and friends to get him to turn against them? I enjoyed the characters in this book. Daniel is strong and his colors are bright. He has some new found abilities that I don't think he is quite sure what to do with, will he figure it out? His story is fast reading and I found myself having a hard time putting it down. This is an enjoyable series that I highly recommend. Find out what happens to Daniel in this installment of the series.

Shades of Death- J.M. Muller

5-star review

Shades of Death by J.M. Muller is a must read! This is the second book in this authors Colors of Immortality series, it also happens to be the first book I’ve read of this series. Having said that I can honestly say that this book can be read as a standalone, though I will certainly be reading the first book since I really loved this one. I found this story surprisingly easy to follow as there was so much detail. I was so captivated by this world that J.M. had created! I’ve never read a story quite like this one, it’s truly unique! It’s intense, dark, haunting, riveting, and anything but predictable! The many twist and turns made for a really entertaining read.

From the very beginning I found myself completely immersed in this story, Daniel was such a captivating character and I loved being able to read from his POV. The amount of detail made it so easy for me to feel as if I was there right alongside these characters. What surprised me the most about this book is how much I loved all of the details, including the haunting and gory ones, they really added so much to the story and this incredible world that these characters live in.

I would definitely recommend this book to others and I look forward to reading more from this author!

Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality, #2) by J.M. Muller was dark, sinister and powerful.

Tossing us back into this unique world of original fantasy creatures and rules, I was once again struck by the complex characters, world building and the layered plot that had me flipping pages non stop. This series is something special, it's on its own level and people, you need to get your hands on this freaking outstanding read. Not only is it just as good as the last, it's polished in and way where you know the author had found her stride. There is more to this world, more darkness to come, and I can't wait.

One of the highlights for me is getting a back story on Narivous’ tyrannical queen, Thorn. There's nothing like a good blood thirsty evil antagonist to make a story pop. As mush as I enjoyed her in the last book, here I got to see why she is, that way, basically get get to know why she ticks. No spoilers here, you're just going to have to read this series to find out why I love Thorn in all her craziness.

Overall I can't stress enough how good this series is. Each book is better than the last, each book is getting us closer to something destructively amazing. Take my high recommendation that you will get hook on the darkness.

Happy Reading

Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality, #2)
By J.M. Muller
5 stars

After reading and loving book 1 in this series I was so excited to get my hands on the second instalment. Again that amazing world that this author created in book 1 ‘Colors of Immortality’ carries over into this book. Her writing was still as captivating and her characters still as complex. I loved that the author took characters from the previous book and built on them enabling me to understand them more as a character. Her writing and talent for storytelling has really has gone to a new level with this book in my opinion. This is definitely one of those books that I struggled to out down!
I have to admit that I didn’t care much for Daniel in book 1 and I still can’t make up my mind about him now! I loved the introduction of new characters to mix in with the old. I do feel for Daniel and the decisions he has to make. He is desperately trying to do the best thing.
A fantastic book with some great twists, amazingly complex characters and a storyline like I’ve never read before! I cannot wait to see what comes next from this author!!

Shades of Death is the second book in the Colors of Immortality Series By J. M Muller. This is a fascinating YA fantasy, with paranormal elements, drama, action, adventure and some uniquely crafted characters that put ‘Zombies’ in a whole new light.
Daniel is central to the story once again. He is still working out his new ‘powers’. He is a huge threat to Thorn- and she’s determined to solidify her power, control, and image once again. And what transpires as the story unravels makes for really intriguing, suspenseful and entertaining reading.
This story was quite clever, I was drawn into the book and lost myself in it. The world building is really well done, the whole tale was believable. This book felt more suspenseful and emotive than the previous one. I think this is the best book so far.
The characters were complex, fully developed individuals. They made this story quite unique.
As this is the second book in the series, you really should read book one first to get the foundations to the story, all the character details, and pertinent details that have got us to this point.
A great story!

Thank you, Ms. Muller!

I can not express how happy I am with the release of the second installment of Colors of Immorality by J.M Muller “Shades of Death” is just as amazing as the first one. I love Daniels character and inner strength, his transformation into the afterlife is a hard one. I really felt for Daniel and wished that he could just be happy and have Fantasia back. The growth of Polar’s and Daniels relationship made me very happy. They have a great connection and are family. A close and necessary bond if they want to survive Thorn. Thorn is the definition of evil! I had my finger crossed that Thorn could redeem herself. but I was wrong. Thorn is a character that shouldn’t be messed with. I think Thorn has met her match in Daniel and if she doesn’t want a war she would find a way to work with him rather than against him.

The pace of the story is great and refreshing. There is never a boring part of the story and it keeps you on your feet. I can’t wait for the next book! I know it’s going to be great.

I give Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality Series Book 2) by JM Muller, 5 stars.
*This review may contain spoilers from book 1*

I loved book one and was so excited to read this, the second book in the series. Daniel is now an immortal creature of darkness. But he was turned into a creature that the queen strictly forbid. Now he has to find a way to survive before the twisted queen has him destroyed.

This was a great second book. It takes the characters you loved and hated in book one and took the story to the next level. It is not a repeat of book one, but takes us on the journey of Daniel in his new life. He must appease the queen, but also stay under the radar as much as possible. This proves much more difficult than Daniel could ever imagine. Plus he is tired of causing trouble to the ones he loves.

Well-written and utterly enjoyable, the author has outdone themselves yet again in a perfectly crafted tale of dark creatures, love, and insanity. The struggle of David trying to maintain his core beliefs while trying to appease a queen bent on ruling with an iron fist is one that will leave you in the edge of your seat. I highly recommend the book, although I do recommend reading book one first.

Shades of Death is the second book in the Colours of Immortality series by J. M. Muller. The second book picks up where the first one finishes, and leaves you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed the first book, I thought the concept was unique and different. I really enjoyed the magic system (though I still have unanswered questions) and Muller’s take on the undead and immortality. I enjoyed the second book more than the first and can see how Muller has immensely improved her beautiful writing and craftsmanship of prose. Each moment had me wanting more and more of this unique world and its characters. Almost every problem I had with the first book was improved with further character and world development, that made the story a thousand times better.
I can’t say it enough; this second book was amazing! And the Legend at the end was 10/10.

Shades of Death (Colours of Immortality series book 2)
By J.M. Muller

Shades of Death is the second book in the Colours of Immortality series and is also the second book I have read by this author. I really like the writing style from J.M. Muller. Shades of Death picks up quite nicely after the previous book, so you don’t feel you have missed anything when moving on with the series. Which I think makes for one enjoyable book. What I like about Shades of Death I did find some answers I needed, so when reading this book, I hope that you to get your questions answered as well. I would really encourage you to read book one before picking this book up as I wouldn’t recommend reading Shades of Death as a standalone as you will miss out on so much. I can’t wait for the next instalment, well hoping there is one lol. Thank you, Ms Muller, for yet another amazing story.

Shades Of Death by J.M. Muller is the second book in her Colours Of Immortality series. As captivating and unique as the first book this is a great continuation of the series.

Daniel has an immense power. One so immense it might be the strongest most have seen. But when that power is corrupted Daniels life is put at risk again.
With the Queen Thorn looking to either use and destroy Daniel he must find a way to save himself before he is put to death for a final time.

This series just gets better with each book. The writing draws you in and keeps you hooked to the story. I couldn’t wait to see what happened in this book. As engaging as the first book this is a great follow up to the series. I cannot wait to see what else this author has to offer.

Shades of Death written by JM Muller. This is the sequel to Colors of Immortality. It follows along Daniels story about life and death, and possibly life and death again. Shades of Death is told is Daniels point of view and it explains his new journey. Staying alive. The storyline is strong in this and it have the right mixture or real life and fantasy when you read about the various situations and responses. Becoming the champion now even Thorn is trying to use Daniel to prove a point that his powers are hers and no one is stronger then her. But will he succumb to the breaking point and be rebuilt in the image Thorn wants or will he battle with everything he has to remain not only alive but on the good side.

As Shades of Death is the sequel to JM Mueller’s “Colors of immortality”, I was intrigued to see how the saga would continue. I was not disappointed. Following the story of Daniel and his unorthodox turning led us to more twists and turns. Again, we had human characters and settings alongside fantasy characters with all sorts of unnatural abilities. This is something that really appeals to me as a reader.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first and the climax was thrilling. Because they are so well described, we invest in the authors characters and I found myself routing at times for Daniel and at times for the evil Thorn!! A great escape from the drudgery of everyday life. I know it is probably aimed at a young adult market, but this not so young adult loved it!

I (like many) have been waiting for book 2!!! When I heard it was getting released I pre-ordered 3 copies. One for me of course. One for my mom and one for my sister-in-law. They love colors as much as I do.
That said my friend couldn't wait for the book so she got the E version... The moment she put her kindle down I took it and read Shades.
First and foremost I LOVE it! It left me craving the next book even more. I did take a little longer to get into it. But I promise it's worth reading to the very last word. Holy cow when I hit a turning point I could not put it down. Muller just knows how to keep me on the edge.
I am going around work telling everyone it is a MUST read.

Shades of Death By J.M. Muller

5 stars!!!!!

I am definitely hooked on this series! I find the uniqueness of the Velores refreshing. This is the second book in the series and it didn't disappoint! I found myself unable to put the book down.

Following on from book one it is quite refreshing to be able to have the story line not lose momentum. Keeping the whole book flowing in a continuous manner and throwing in a bit of a twist I found this to keep me turning the pages. I seriously cannot wait to read the next book in this series to see how things will unfold. Velores definitely bring a newness to immortals and I am on baited breath for the next book in this series.

Shades of Death is book two in the Colors of Immortality series written by J.M. Muller. This is Daniel's story and it takes off where book one leaves off. I definitely recommend reading book
One just because it has all the backstory and you can see what led up to this book. I really enjoyed book one and was excited for this one. Overall I enjoyed the story and found it to be just as interesting as the first. If you like paranormal books that are unique and probably unlike other paranormal books I recommend this one for you. The writing is really good and the characters are super unique and interesting. I would rate 4 stars.

Shades of Death (Colors of Immortality Series Book2) by J. M. Muller is off the charts again. J. M. Muller shows again her ability to write so descriptively that you are there in the story with her. I was hoping to go into the world of J. M. Muller again. This story is the story of Daniel. He is adjusting to his new life and who is in it with him. He is only able to roam during the night hours. He is limited to certain areas as well. He is being used to decide what is going to happen to him and those who are close to him. This story is so moving and a great way to learn Daniel’s story. I cannot wait for the next installment of Colors of Immortality.

Shades of Death is a YA Paranormal Fantasy by J.M. Muller and the sequel to Colors of Immortality. I really enjoyed the first book ( I also suggest reading that one before starting Shades of Death ) so I was excited to read this book and it exceeded all my expectations! In this book Daniel finds himself with new powers, new danger and tough choices he isn’t sure he is able to make. This book is exciting, full of suspense and flows beautifully from the first book to this one. J.M. Muller does a great job introducing new characters and adding to her unique and imaginative world. I look forward to more in this series! This is a must read for paranormal and fantasy fans!

This is the second book in the series that I have read. I do really like the story line here and think that the author does a great job with the characters, plot, theme, setting, etc. She really knows how to draw you in and keep you turning the pages. I do think it helped that I read the first book in the series, but I am also one of those people who do not like to read anything out of order. Lol She picks up where the first book left off but does try to give some background information to help get your memory back. The suspense was great throughout and I highly recommend picking this one up.

Horrid. Everyone thinks and acts like teenagers despite being immortal and being around for centuries. The main character is horribly predictable along with the story line. Oh love at first sight, not sure about it, then sure about it because it’s all about auras so now we must fight because our infatuation is special, but then no the tyrannical queen will stop us and kill everyone. But then she doesn’t only punishment and if Daniel says sorry he gets another chance to just get captured again. So put that on repeat and you’ve got this series. I feel like I’m listening to middle schoolers and their eternal drama. I haven’t DNFed in a long time but I couldn’t struggle any longer.

Following Daniel in this second installment was surprising as well as shocking. His world is entirely different following his decision to join the Immortals. He is faced with many difficult choices and fights to maintain some of his humanity.

I felt the story had a great plot and it easily caught my attention just like the first novel did. I love several of the characters in this novel and how they interact with each other. Several scenes made me grimace, but overall I enjoyed the story. Easy 5-star book with very few errors.

Colors was funtastic! Shades is even better!!

This, folks, is a fun, engaging read all around. With Colors of Immortality, we were introduced to a whole new, perfectly diabolical world hidden in our own backyard. Shades of Death brilliantly takes us further into this colorfully dark world. J.M. Muller has masterfully detailed a story of rich characters. And, despite their flaws, or maybe because of them, I can't but hope for their redemption!
The only problem is, when will we get book three!?!?

Shades of Death is imaginative, gripping, and an ingenious sequel that I think is even better than the first! The fantasy mixed with the real world that J.M Mueller has created almost seems real. Her characters are well thought out and each is more interesting than the next. By far this is one of the most creative, well written, and enjoyable books that I have ever read! I can't wait for the next one in the series!

Excellent book!! I enjoyed the first book in the series and feel that this continuation was an even better installment from the author. Rich in detail. Exquisite character and universe development. Plenty of twists and turns. Unexpected ending. I had all of my senses and emotions involved in this story and couldn’t put the book down once I started. Great book. Cannot wait to see how the series continues!
