Astrid doesn't remember much about her childhood, at least not before her parents death. After that her memories of the group home and the other eleven boys and girls that lived there are vague and scary. But not as scary as the doctors she had to visit each week or the shots that they gave her.
But she isn't a child anymore. She's an adult and with her mentor's help, has carved a life for herself and the powers she wields. She's safe. She's capable. She's super.
Until it all comes crashing down and the past races back into her life.
She's not alone in her abilities and one-by-one she'll find the others like her. She'll form a team. Find heartache and love.
Ultimately she'll have to take down one of her own.
That's what it means to be one of the Elite.
*The Elite is a superhero fantasy series with a healthy dose of kick-ass action, an unstoppable heroine, a sexy reverse harem love story and gadgets and cool toys that every superhero wishes to add to their arsenal.
I really enjoy that she finds people like her that she can touch after so many years of loneliness. I'm not surprised it's one of their own behind the bad guys but kind of surprised at which one it was. And if course there is always the backstabber.
Astrid doesn’t remember much about her childhood. After her parents died she was sent to a group home with eleven boys and girls. The memories are of unusual behaviors and scary doctors giving her shots. She was part of Project 12. She kept mostly to herself because she was too sensitive. Astrid is an empath; with the brush of her hand, she can feel someone’s deepest, darkest secrets. As a child, it was too much. But she's no longer a child. With the help of her mentor, she has learned to harness her abilities. She's strong, she's badass. She's super. Then the past catches up and her world is shattered but she's not alone. There are others like her and they must be a team to survive. However, not all of them have the same good intentions. At least one is the enemy.
The description of this book reads, The Elite is a superhero fantasy series with a healthy dose of kick-ass action, an unstoppable heroine, a sexy reverse harem love story and gadgets and cool toys that ever superhero wishes to add to their arsenal. I honestly can't describe it any better! Astrid is fantastic; guarded yet wanting a connection. She's physically and mentally strong. Then you have the boys, Quinn is wonderful. The bond he and Astrid share is based on common experience and shared abilities but the heat they have together is pure chemistry. I love the two broken inner children leaning on each other for emotional support and the two adults desiring a true connection. Great dynamic. Owen is intriguing, still a bit of a mystery but definitely interested. I look forward to the day he trusts Astrid and Owen enough to completely open up. Then there's the voice of knowledge, Casper, friend, and advisor. The villain is perfect. That's all you get from me.
I love the RH genre and love superheroes so this is perfect for me. Adventure, romance, fun! I can't wait for more.
This is a fresh new reverse harem romance, a novel idea of superheroes, it gripped me from the start and I did not want to put it down
I admit I struggled with it being in the third person to start but I got over that very quickly and got really stuck in to the story
The characters are brilliant and gel together nicely, the story flows at a great pace and I love the multi POV as you get everyone’s thoughts and feelings
I am very excited for book two, I love the plot line and execution and thoroughly enjoyed this read
I mostly enjoyed this book - I liked the take on super-heroes with super powers and having that be the setting for a poly situation. What I found frustrating was that for what looks like a pretty white cast, the villain ends up being a black woman. It's one thing if the cast is diverse and the world appears diverse and the villain is a person of color, and it's quite another when this happens. I could also go into how it's perturbing that the villain's super power is bringing illusions to life and fooling people, but I'll accept that might be taking things a bit too far.
It's a bit of a deal-breaker and I don't think I'm going to continue with this series. It's a pity because I really liked Astrid and the guys and Elites is otherwise well-done. I might continue on with the second book and see if the diversity issue gets worked out, but I'm not too optimistic. It seems like one of the guys might be Asian though, so there's that - if he's Korean or Japanese I'm just gonna smirk though.
Astrid didn't have it easy growing up. She lost her parents at an early age and was forced to move into a foster home. That wasn't it though. She was different. So different, she constantly wore multiple pairs of socks, layers of clothing, and a hat over her ears. She didn't understand what it was, but realized the others in the home were just as strange. However, her home there didn't last long either when it blew up one day. Twelve years later, Astrid has been honing her skills with the help from her mentor. Her life takes yet another drastic turn when a stranger from her past shows up. Together, they must uncover who is killing off their mentors and behind the Pixie Dust drug outbreak.
I love that I am finally seeing a RH book with characters acting like superheroes due to personal powers which have been medically modified. Well, technically I guess you should call them vigilantes. I think it is so cool to see a female heroine in the role of a superhero. It's an interesting take on the story.
This story is told from a third person point of view. While usually I am not a fan of such, I didn't mind it so much in this story. However, it had another style I'm not a big fan of either. And that is the switching between present and past points of view. I did see how it was necessary to the plot line. It's just something I'm not too fond of. It didn't happen often though in the story. But it does kind of lead to my next point.
At some points in the story, I felt as if some of the context seemed to get lost in the telling. This sometimes happened when going to a past scene. I would think the past POV was going to give some insight into what was happening in the present, but sometimes they didn't seem to really match up. I think it all had a point eventually, but at the time, it seemed unnecessary.
I would have liked to see a little more depth with the characters. It seems like we only got a surface-level feel for them. We get a pretty good look into Astrid, but I still felt. we could have gotten more from her. The males included in her harem, however, I felt we didn't get nearly as much from them. You couldn't feel the chemistry between them.
It did end on a bit of a cliffhanger. Not too bad, but still enough to leave you wanting more. Lots of questions will need to be answered in the next book.
I would definitely recommend this book. It's an interesting read and different from some of the other reverse harem books out there at the moment. I'm curious to know what will happen in the next book of the series.
I never knew I was missing a Superhero Reverse Harem book in my life until I read Elites: The Supers of Project 12. Oh my gosh, it was amazing.
I did find the first two chapters a bit difficult to get into as it took me a bit of time to get used to the style of writing in this book which is different to what I normally read. However, as I'm a big fan of Angel Lawson's other books, and really loved the blurb for this book I persevered and I'm so glad I did. This book was incredibly well put together. It was really exciting and different and as I was reading it I really did feel like I was watching a movie. I loved the different characters and their back story. The flashbacks played a really important part in us learning what makes the characters what they are today and slowly builds up to giving us more details. They were seamlessly fitted into the story too and didn't take me away from what was happening currently. The big baddie was cleverly written as to who they are and why they're doing what they're doing. The romance is a slow burn too and isn't at the forefront of the story, the action and adventure is mainly what this book is about.
Elites, for me, was really exciting. I couldn't put it down once I got into it and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to get to the next bit. I was sad when I did get to the end of the book as I really wanted more. I'm excited as to what will happen next in book two and am really looking forward to reading it.
I'm relatively new to the reverse harem world, only having read a few, so I was intrigued by what felt like a fresh take on the genre. I really enjoyed the superhero vibe, and that Astrid was so powerful...
A few spoilers ahead: Astrid Petta is quite the badass, and something of a vigilante. We realize early on that while she does have mentorship and that she's not alone, she's pretty independent and self-sufficient. She's not just strong...she can 'see' others' thoughts and memories by touching them. Through flashbacks to her childhood, we learn how being ultra-sensitive (physically) led to her being chosen by (the government? a private group?) to join other kids with latent abilities. These abilities are honed and magnified through a series of procedures, etc. I don't want to give much away because I really enjoy the reveals, but this plot is woven so expertly, here. I adored Quinn - Astrid's new...partner? Boy-toy? - as well as the intriguing and mischievous Owen. It'll be interesting to see how Astrid continues to interact with each of them and whoever else comes along...and how they deal with each other as Astrid acts on her attractions. I also really enjoyed the action sequences and pop-culture references.
Read: October 21, 2021 Rating: ? I dunno, 2,5 Stars
Huh, this a hard one to rate since I really disliked the writing style but I liked the underlying story.
I also really don't want to give this a shitty rating because, c'mon, its a superhero rh! That's so cool and we need so much more of those, just...with a completely different writing style.
The writing kept pulling me out of the story because I kept getting distracted by the clunky, clumsy feel of it, it feels like this is the first thing the author has ever written and it kept me from sinking into the story.
The story itself is, while not wholly original, definitely not something I've read a lot and I liked the strange superpower our mc has, which honestly seems half like a cool power to have and half like a curse, and she kind of experiences it like that as well, which makes for an interesting character, if only the writing didn't distract from that.
Also, this has pretty much insta lust/love and ugh, it isn't even done that well since it feels like ya, but the character are like 24 so why all the strange fade to black and almost shying away from the intimacy that happens I dunno...
I don't think I will continue with this series unless I get really bored.
This was a fun read of intrigue, mystery, action, adventure, sex and superhero suits! I loved the characters, Astrid is strong, take charge, smart and light on her feet, with the powers of a predator, strength, quick healing and reflexes but she can also see the echoes of others emotions and pasts with just one touch. Owen is great with his blazé, flirty and nerdy attitude, he can create illusions that seem perfectly real, messing with minds. Quinn is the strong self assured romantic, that can send out electronic pulses strong enough to know our electronic or blocks on the power grid. Then there's Casper is the behind the scenes lone wolf, mysterious tech guy, that can manipulate electronics. I'm excited to see what's in store next for these four, will they find the others like them, can they help bring Demitria around to the good guys side again, and what is with Jensen?
I love all things superheroes and most things reverse harem (RH) so this premise was super exciting for me. I really like the idea that all of these children were part of a secret project and now they are finding each other as adults. The best superhero tropes of cool and sometimes tortuous powers, kickass costumes and flashy gadgets are all accounted for. The fact that the romance in the series will blossom into a RH is a huge plus as well. I tend to rate RH stories on a separate scale from all other books I read, and on my RH scale this one is a 3.75-4 because of just how much I like all of the above things.
As to specifics - (SLIGHTLY SPOILERY) - on the "romance" side of things, I found myself more interested in Owen and Casper than in Quinn, the hero the heroine (Astrid) actually has romantic interactions with in this book. I just wasn't feeling their connection yet. I really like that we don't know all of the members of her harem yet, and that they aren't all already gaga over her. I think the story and characters could be a little more fleshed out -as this is a series I imagine we will continue to see those things grow. Though there was a charm to the simplicity of the mystery elements, at times I thought it was a little too simple, or too easy, with the characters all of a sudden knowing things, and some things that seemed like very slight plotholes or inconsistencies to me. The book is in various POV, with some chapters/portions taking place in the past, when the heroine was a child. A majority of it is third person, present tense and there were some tense issues sometimes, as well as some words that weren't errors per se, but where I thought another word would sound/flow better. Overall, I found the story a lot of fun, similar to the CW shows I enjoy, and I look forward to the next in the series.
Angel Lawson’s Elites is the first in the Supers of Project 12 series.
It’s a modern-day super hero story. Since Elites is the first in the series, it focuses on the origins of the 12 and how they came together. It’s told primarily from the perspective of Echo, a woman who can hear echoes of people’s feelings and memories. But it’s set up so that as the series progresses, you’ll get more books from each person’s perspective.
While it’s Urban Fantasy/Superheroes, it’s got lots of elements that come from other genres I love. Like reverse harem and fairy tales and FBI thrillers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. Which isn’t written yet. Boo.
Elite is the first book in the new series about the beginning of a group of super heros. I usually do not go for super hero books, just not my thing. But this book was amazing! I loved it from start to finish, literally couldn't put it down. The stroy follows Astrid, aka Echo, an empath turned super hero, and a few men from her group home as a child, all given gifts or abilities from experiments done on them. Echo and her guys will learn together, the hard way and through trials, how this super hero business will work for them. If you are a fan of super hero books, read it! If you're not a fan of them, still read it! You won't be disappointed. Action, adventure, suspense, a little romance and a few laughs......whats not to love?
The concept of this book was super intriguing. A reverse-harem super hero book? Of course I had to check it out. And I am so glad that I did. The multiple viewpoints were definitely interesting. Not only did we get to see things through the eyes of various characters, we also got to see their past as well as their present. There was a lot of action in the story, and a lot of moving pieces. I'm curious to see how it will all come together as the story progresses. As far as the reverse harem aspect, this was definitely down-played in this book. I cannot wait to see how relationships grow and develop.
Oh, what a fantastic superhero book. Angel Lawson delves into a world of super heroes that were manipulated as children and have grown in their powers with the help of mentors. This is no superficial superhero story. Lawson draws you into a unique, vivid and thrilling world with characters that are wary of not only each other initially, but of the world around them. Lawson weaves these heroes and heroine into what appears initially as a basic drug bust. But hold your horses, so much more lies underneath the surface. This group of Elites has their work cut out for them and I for sure am one who is going to follow them on their journey.
Tough on this one. I would give 3.5 stars if they allowed half stars. It needed world building and character introduction but seemed a little slow because of that. Typical first book problems. But I found it good enough to want to read the next one. The powers are neat and I didn't see glaring holes about how the author not only created them, but gave them limits that fit the story. So the characters aren't omnipotent, but have flaws and though I would like more personality development are at least three dimensional unlike some books. I think it is worth buying the next book and seeing where the series is going.
This book was so awesome! I loved superheroes. Frankly I’m a bit of a comic nerd so this hit all kinds of high notes for me. Add in that the FMC is NOT immediately thrown into a multi-dating situation and I was thrilled. It was realistic in that way. The focus of this book is it’s story, the plot, the characters & their backgrounds. If you’re looking for super steamy? This ain’t it. But if you’re looking for a fresh of breath air and a story that is actually about the STORY and not just the behind doors stuff then this is for you. I can’t wait to read book 2!
This is my very first read by this author and it definitely won't be my last!! Wowza!! Totally unbelievable, attention-grabbing, and quite a super hero action packed book!! Really liked it!! So waiting for Book 2!!
Project 12 - "In short, twelve kids identified as having natural abilities and talents beyond the norm."
Please give this book a chance, it is so worth it!!
Astrid grew up in a home with other kids who all had powers, years later she thinks they’re all dead and acts as a vigilante under the care of her mentor Atticus. One night she meets a human taser and then everything changes. Apart from Quinn looks like it’s gonna be a slow burn. Astrid is dangerous and impulsive. Gotta say I didn’t catch onto the bad guy. Open ending. Favourite character was Owen, he has that fun trickster vibe to him.
This is an epic start to a new series. In this book we meet Astrid a kick ass main character. Her life turns upside down when Quinn enters her life. When her mentor is murdered it’s up to her to discover the nefarious plans that surround her city. This is another must read by the amazing Angel Lawson!
The Elites The Supers of Project 12 is an amazing read. They are orphans who had powers. Those powers are tweaked by doctors when they were children. They all ended up in hiding by people who ended up raising them when the home they lived in exploded. I really, really hope that there is more to the story.
A captivating story with great world building. Medically enhanced personal powers is a different take on the superhero genre that I really enjoyed. I would like a little more depth to the characters and relationships but I suppose we will get more in future installments. I look forward to more in this series and from this author.
Story has potential, but the writing style was not my cup of tea. Story is supposedly told from multiple POV, but I found them all the same and not giving that extra insight into the different characters' thoughts and feelings. Also FTB... just not feeling the desire, the angst, the adrenaline, etc.
Superheros are awesome!! Astrid was orphaned as a young child and sent to a group home. Even that didn't last, but now she is all grown up. Her mentor was keeping secrets, and not its up to Astrid, Quinn, Owen and Casper to figure everything out and stop a bad guy that may just be one of their own.
Twelve kids taken from their parents because of the extraordinary and phenomenal things they can do. Taken to a home where their powers were increased by doctors. All separated by an explosion and most assumed dead. Good storyline, interesting book. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
I enjoyed the book. This is the first RH I have read where not all the harem is introduced in the first book. Its a very good premise and story line. I am looking forward to learning all about each superhero and seeing where the author takes it from here.
I love the idea of superheroes! I really enjoyed the plot, the characters and the different POV's. The reverse harem is slowly built which is a plus point in my book. I didn't give this book 5 stars because I am not a fan of the third person narrative.
I like that the main character is a woman. The story would be better if told only from her perspective. It needs a better build up to the climax. There’s some action, but telling the story from multiple perspectives took away from the story.
