Muller takes the reader through the life and oeuvre of Diego Velasquez (1599-1660), painter to King Philip IV of Spain.
Muller writes clearly about Velasquez’s style and puts each painting into its context, while telling the story of the artist’s progress. He admires Velasquez but is also open in his criticism when he feels the need; he recognises the strengths and weaknesses of Velasquez’s work.
Muller’s judgement on the artist makes clear his view of his great skill; “ But Velasquez, more than any other painter, takes us out of the world of objects and into the world of painting, inviting us to discover its objective delights, never to be confused with those of the external world.” (Page 238)
