I loved this book when I read it years ago. Looks like the original can be downloaded or read online for free. I found it in a used bookstore and it remains on my book shelf as one that I go back to over and over again. In particular I reread Chapter 15 about Wisdom–Ancient and Modern. Here is the link:

This is a comprehensive book about the power of prayer. The authors begin by describing experiments carried out in the 50's with a group of people in need of psychological help, who each chose one of three different methods of obtaining such help - psychotherapy, random prayers, and prayer therapy. On conclusion of the 9-month experiment, the first group (undergoing psychotherapy) was deemed to have obtained 65% improvement, the second (using random prayer = petitionary prayer) no improvement, the third (undergoing prayer therapy) 72% improvement

It is the latter "treatment", which was so successful, that this book attempts to teach us. It contains detailed information about how we should go about learning how to pray in the optimal way.

The key factors are recognizing the four "trouble-makers" in our unconscious - fear, guilt, inferiority feelings and misguided love (hate), learning to cast out these demons, and then praying in the correct manner. Prayer should not be petitonary, focusing on the problem, but affirmative, focusing on the loving power of God.

This book, published in 1957, is impeccably written and goes into absolute detail about how to carry out effective transformative prayer.

I can't begin to express the wisdom in this book, but would highly recommend it for those eager to learn this optimal form of prayer, though it will need to be read a few times in order to fully integrate the process.

It took me a bit longer to read this book, because of the science involved, but overall it was great! It opened my mind to new perspectives on prayer! I'm surprised to see that it was written back in 1957.

I got a lot out of reading this book - in understanding the impact prayer can have - especially in following a prayer 'discipline.' It's amazing that it was written in 1957 and is still relevant today. I think I could read it multiple times and learn something new each time.

This book is based upon some prayer experiments that were conducted by the author in the 1950’s. Through the experiments, the author was able to show that prayer “can be the most important tool in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of man’s personality.” A fascinating aspect of the experiment highlighted in this book is the dramatic difference in results between the Random Pray'ers' and those who participated in Prayer Therapy. The primary difference that was outlined between the two groups was that the Random Prayers tended to focus on the negative which produced negative results. Those who participated in Prayer Therapy followed a more specific process for prayer which resulted in a dramatic difference in addressing their personal problems. One of my primary takeaways from reading the book is that the ultimate healing power for our demons is to internalize and accept the Love of God.

an amazing book. It really helped me years ago develop a more thorough and satisfying prayer life and it refreshes me whenever I decide to study it again.
