A mission to a foreign land has left Captain Trip Yert with a responsibility he never anticipated: watching over two dozen magical stasis chambers containing half-dragon young, including eight that are half-human. As bewildering as he finds it, all of them are related to him.
He’s vowed to ensure they make it safely back to his homeland where the sorceress Sardelle can, he hopes, advise him on how to care for them. But while he, Rysha, and Major Kaika are investigating a friend’s death and trying to arrange passage home, someone steals one of the baby girls.
If Trip can’t deal with hostile mages, corrupt business moguls, and the surprising secrets of his mother’s past, he may lose the little sister he never had a chance to know.
The review of the entire series is available at my blog
Unraveled is a filler book which ties up a lot of loose threads and sets up the finale. So, the book tends to go all over the place but it manages to finish with a great climax.
I found it to be average and would rate it on par with the first book in the series - Dragon Storm.
There is a scene where a dragon in human form gropes and threatens to rape Rysha, using his magic to try to make her stop fighting. After Rysha escapes, she wonders how she'll tell Trip that she almost agreed to have sex with this dragon-human.
Not being able to say no to sex doesn't mean that you've agreed to have it. Not being able to say no to sex, in this case, means attempted rape.
Please, Lindsay Buroker, stop conflating magically-coerced rape with consent. This may not have been as bad as what happened in Soulblade but it was still upsetting.
The rest of the book was fine. This bit of nonsense was unnecessary and harmful.
After how good the previous books were, I was greatly disappointed in this book from the start. The initial problem is that the basic premise is just idiotic. Unfortunately, the storyline then perpetuates this idiocy by jumping from one dumb situation to another.
Additionally, Trip has somehow transformed from an unconfident fledgling magic user into a Marvel superhero whilst becoming much duller in the process. However, I doubt Captain Boring would be invited to join the Avengers.
The ending is straight out of the “jumping the shark” handbook and yet it’s still the best part of the book.
Lindsay's editor should have told her to throw this in the bin and start again.
I find myself reading into the night to finish this book. It's funny, exciting, unpredictable, thoughtful - overall, well-written. I have become invested in the characters from the 2nd book and would very much like to see them through to the very end. Lindsay has announced that the 5th is the final of the heritage of power series. I always rate a book according to entertainment value and this is tops. The protagonist, Trip, has always been consistent with his character - insecure even when his dragon powers strengthen, honorable because he wants to do the right thing at all times, and of kind heart, because he does not want to harm any living being unnecessarily even when defending himself and his team. Discovering his shocking heritage and trying to harness newfound powers in the midst of battle, would be too much for a 25 year old but he coped. Oh sometimes, he deserves a smack in the head for being naive and wimpy and I want to yell at him to say "Own it, you dope!" I'm sure many in his position would turn into outright megalomaniacs and defy authority. He is far from perfect and his good heart gets him into far more trouble than expected. True to his character, he wanted to get to the bottom of why a team member was killed and to give him a proper burial. This personal mission got him into situations that were way over his head. Trip, despite his power, is far from being invincible. Meanwhile, Rysha the brains in the team, grows more confident of her warrior skills. Although she needs to still pass the elite soldiers' test, is most deserving of being one. I am a Harry Potter fan and I can't help but think of Rysha as Trip's Hermione. Through adversity, Trip and Rysha become a lot closer. I am also happy that Kaika reveals more of her character here. She is known to be flippant in all things but she reveals a more human side. I already adore Kaika's fearlessness and irreverence in previous novels and uncovering this side of her made me like her more.
I am entertained by the soul blades' bickering. Young and irreverent Jaxi and ancient Azarwrath - despite their vast differences, are able to work alongside each other to help the defenses as well as educate Trip with his growing magical powers. I am amused that Azarwrath dines vicariously through his handler and enjoys good food. They may be supporting characters in this series but they play a major part. His Annoyingness and my favorite dragon, Bharava Saruth is absent and regrettably only gets a mention and the new lady dragon, Shulina Arya, is fast becoming a favorite!
Loved the humor in this book. The situations they get themselves into this time are far from easy and most times, I wondered if they could survive them or some major character will die. With more uncharted waters and influx of more dragons, Iskandia's world has become more perilous. This book is suspenseful but also a light read at the same time. Though I'd love for this series to be longer, I'd wish Book 5 comes sooner so I can keep the momentum. This novel isn't perfect but if you dive into the nuts and bolts you can't get past, you will be missing out on the entertainment value of the whole story. Lindsay has created a different world with her own rules and in an archaic era which makes me wonder when I try to relate it with present day, but I am reminded why I read fantasy - no real world rules. Absolutely anything is possible and I love it! Some of the dialogues appear avoidably long, inopportune and silly but this is all part of the book's charm.
The entirety of this story is in a port city where Trip,Rysha and Kaika are trying to get a passage back with the statis chambers,in the meantime Trip tries to find out who killed Dreyak.when one of the statis chambers is stolen Trip and Rysha try their hardest to find it,after numerous hardships(from Trip being tortured,Rysha almost dying,a silver dragon almost raping Rysha and many others)they manage to get the stastis chamber with the help of Dreyak’s mother who is a crime lord there.
The past three books weren’t master pieces but they were entertaining and this one felt boring hop the last one’s good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Not quite as good as the first three. I think it’s more of a filler to get to the next book. I’m still loving the series and look forward to reading Book 5.
I read this series before finishing the prequel series. While you do get some spoilers about what's to come in the other series you otherwise don't need to read the other one to enjoy this one. It incorporates Lindsay's trademarks- her silly, light humor, her quirky unconventional characters and lots of action.
None of this author's books contain a lot of worldbuilding. That works for me because I can fill in a good bit on my own. Plus, too much detail will drag down the pace. However, if you need a lot of complex worldbuilding and details then your enjoyment might be diminished.
Her characters are all quirky and unconventional heroes and heroines. That is one of the things I love about this author, how her characters are all unusual and misfits in their own ways. For the most part they start as underdogs and grow into their potential which is very satisfying to read. Her books are very much character and action driven.
I also love the female positivity in her books. They aren't the in your face, all men are bad and women rule and are superior types. They simply show a variety of really strong women in very different ways who display different types of competency. They also easily hold their own next to men.
If you like some light hearted fantasy that doesn't take itself too seriously, along with some humor then give this author a try. Humor is always very personal and not everyone enjoys the same types. This author's humor tends to be a little screwball, perhaps a bit sophomoric, broad and droll. If you need more of a highbrow type of wit looks elsewhere. I think her humor adds to the feel of her books, that they are for escapism and not meant to be taken overly seriously. Basically, her books are great for getting away from the real world for a bit.
My enjoyment of the series has returned, although there was a little bit of Deus ex Machina near the end. :)
Rysha continued to grow as a character, but I think Trip stagnated. While his doubts are endearing, he should have more faith in himself by now. Still, I understand completely because I have the same sort of doubts (if not the same abilities)! Even though I succeed over and over I still doubt I can succeed again when I start a new project.
The story felt shorter than the others, but perhaps that was because most of it took place over 2 days. A lot happened and it was definitely action-packed.
As always a lot happening in a short time, so nice to visit a new country. I am thrilled by the chracter development as always and cannot wait to start the next book.
Tripp, Rysha and Kaika remain behind from their previous mission to find his father (they found the dragon's bones...and several stasis chambers with have dragon off spring) in order to solve the mystery of Dreyak's death. One of the babies is stolen, so recovering her is added to the quest as well. I enjoyed the story, it was fast paced and I love hearing the soul blades "argue" with one another.
I'm hoping there is another in this series as I have really enjoyed this book. Please keep writing. I would recommend to all lovers of this type of literature.😁😀
This one was probably the slowest book for me from my point of view. Still has all the elements that make the series great but I felt it suffered with the reduced cast of characters and locations. That being said I do think it was a necessary book for the series as it provided some depth to the world.
I enjoyed this book very much. And the series. Couldn’t hardly put this book down. There were some things they did that made things more complicated that were a tad irritating, but the story is so good I just went with it. Love Trip. The other characters are great too. Recommend
Exciting action and likable protagonists — as usual in a Buroker fantasy.
There's plenty of action, fighting dragon-cultists, crooks, dragon-blooded and magically-controlled predators, and another foe that I won't spoil. Both Trip and Rysha must decide how far they're willing to go, risking their military careers, to delay, protecting the half-dragon infants in the stasis chambers. One thing I appreciate about Ms. Buroker's tales is that her female characters are fully the equals of the males in terms of making plans and their own decision, and taking action and their own risks. I will give a bit of a spoiler and tell you that in the end, we get to see more of Sulina Arya, the exuberant young gold dragon, excited by her new world and the opportunities for heroics — and stories. The proofreading is excellent: I don't seem to have noticed a single error. I'll be looking forward to more from these characters.
This was a great addition to the series. I can't wait to read what's next.... I think Trip is in the lead for my favorite character. He is a pleasant mix of intelligence, humility, bravery, and a host of other attractive traits. There was just something about him and his actions/words that was really appealing to me. Just one of the many things I love about Buroker is her talent for crafting characters. She uses words and actions rather than a lot of physical description to paint a picture of the character in your mind. I just love it. There were a lot of surprises unveiled in this installment. I’m curious to see how all the babies are handled down the road. I liked Trip’s sense of responsibility for his siblings and the plans he formed in his head were amusing. I’m excited to see the relationship between Trip and Rysha grow—their relationship just seemed so right while it grew. I’m also looking forward to the world’s first dragon rider….
In the latest book in the Heritage of Power series, Captain Trip Yert, along with Lieutenant Rysha Ravenwood and Major Kaika have stayed behind in Lagresh with the stasis chambers containing the half-dragon young to arrange passage back home. While they’re waiting for a suitable ship, Trip also hopes to investigate the death of Dreyak, the Cofah warrior who had assisted in their previous missions and become somewhat of a friend. With dangers all around them, including members of the dragon cult, a couple of unscrupulous and conniving crime lords, and assorted other business people and criminals looking to steal their magical blades and/or the babies, the group definitely had their hands full. With all of the action that is a big part of this series, including more dragons, as well as a bit of romance for Trip and Rysha, this was another winner in this fantastic series.
This series has been so fun and engaging. As per usual Ms. Buroker drew me in and I just couldn't put it down. I adore her characters and the unexpected twists and turns along the way. Her phrasing is sublime. I will be on pins and needles waiting for her next adventure in this series. When I was growing up, Robert A Heinlein, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Anne McCaffery were my favorite authors. She has joined their ranks, and I can't wait for more of her brilliance.
This is not a book for those who haven’t been reading this series all along (and for them I say, boy have you been missing something special: go run to your bookstore, kindle or otherwise, and get book 1, though warning it IS addictive). For fellow addicts, however, this is pure catnip. So many open questions are addressed, and while this is clearly a book designed to set up for the next, final (*sniff*), book in the series, it is also a superb adventure in and by itself. Wonderfully written, wonderfully enjoyable. Hallmarks of a Buroker book and certainly found hear.
This series just keeps getting better! Trip, Rysha, and Kaika are all awesome characters. I like how we're getting to know them better and how their relationships develop over the course of their adventures. I can't wait to see what happens in the next continuation of the story.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that the characters never enter a situation they aren’t either prepared to deal with or the easily suffer through until some dues ex machina stuff happens. Again I really like the story it’s just these characters don’t have much depth to them. They never step outside their boundaries.
Another good book by Lindsay - I started it and finished it on the same day. Trip continues to be someone you would want to know though I missed his friend Leftie in this book. All the characters work well and I liked the question of when is it right to not follow orders. I eagerly await the next book in the series.
Trip, Rysha and Kaika are trying to get home while babysitting assorted half Dragon babies in stasis chambers and avenging a lost comrade. Add in various mysterious enemies, allies and more dragons and you have another rollicking entry in a great series.
