I actually rated this book at 4 and 1/2 of 5 stars on my blog, www.cloquetriverpress.com. Why? This is as fine a short story of regional fiction as I've read in quite a while. Holmes is a master of description and character and brings the reality of the harsh life of the north Atlantic coast right into your living room or bedroom as you read these short depictions of nature and man. Sadly, Holmes only wrote one novel (which I haven't read but plan to) in his long, long life. I wish he would have written more and shared his great gifts for the written word with more generosity.
