The originator of Medical Crisis Counseling offers a step-by-step program to assist individuals and their families overcome the eight most common fears regarding long-term illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. 25,000 first printing. Tour.
Read in 1996; my review from then: Written by an MSW counselor who had two children who died of heart defects (one a baby, one at age 16), so she's been through it. Very methodical; itemized nine fears and goes through each one; lots of lists. It all appears to be very good information, especially for people with life-threatening illnesses. But somehow the tone rubbed me the wrong way.
While, overall, I found this book quite helpful, I also found some of the sentiments expressed by this author to be quite ableist, and sometimes even in a triggering way. so, if you read this book, be prepared to encounter and deal with these, especially in the chapter on isolation.
