Volume 2 of the memoirs of (the fictional) Madame C-, a 19th century courtesan. I do wish the characters were real people! I’m enjoying this series immensely. In this volume, Madame C- finds herself pregnant as the result of an unprepared, spontaneous meeting with her dear Mr. F-. She retires from Town to a small cottage in Surrey that one of her former patrons left her in his Will. In her boredom, she begins to write a Gothic novel for her own amusement, but it turns out so well that her friends urge her to publish it, which she does.
The second self-published volume of the Comfortable Courtesan series, originally published in serial form online, finds Madame C- in circumstances which necessitate a withdrawal from London society. Most of this volume therefore takes place at the Surrey house left to her by a former lover, General Y-. Madame C-'s removal from her usual wide circle allows this book to concentrate more closely on her relationships with two couples, the F-s and Lord G- R- and Mr McD- and to let the readers become better acquainted with the members of her household. It's just as delightful as the first; funny and charming and occasionally very moving. I am very happy to have the series in book form now.
