With Smithsonian and DK Publishing working together, the final result will only be the very best, and Smithsonian’s Timelines of Everything is most certainly that and much more! So much information is found in this coffee table sized book, that it will take many return trips for me to this book to understand and learn it all, but one does not need ‘know’ this entire book. If a subject such as Medieval Europe interests one, just check the table of contents or the index and go to the two pages that cover the subject. On pages 98 & 99 is a timeline of Medival Europe with a Before box of information, onto Charlemagne crowned in Rome, 800 (AD), with added facts about Charlemagne. The timeline continues with important events during this era such as The Battle of Hastings, 1066, Hanseatic League, 1241, and the Gutenberg Bible, c. 1439. Then the reader finds a box with After information. On pp. 242 & 243 is an illustration of the sinking of R.M.S. Titanic accompanied with facts relating to what occurred on April 14/15 when the “unsinkable” ship’s starboard side is hit by a huge iceberg “destroying five watertight compartments” in its hull. Fascinating! Possibly spying is of interest to to the reader - “The Story of Spying” is on pp.270/271. Everything from Prehistory to The Modern World is in this truly fine, informative and excellently executed book. So highly recommended! 5++ stars!

SUCH a cool book!!! It’s tabletop size with full color pages. It’s divided into six periods of time, with each page a different subject/theme. Some examples are: The written word (photos of various early alphabets and scripts), ancient monuments (Gobekli Tepe-Easter Island Statues), Roman technology (aqueducts-Pantheon), measuring time (sundials-atomic clocks), etc... I could go on and on because every page is so interesting. There are several “story of” pages: the wheel, sports, democracy, philosophy, sculpture, skyscrapers, robotics... Pages cover timelines of chemistry, biology, and physics; aviation, jewelry, medicine, dance, space exploration, and there are also many pages on specific cultures/countries/wars. This is seriously an amazing book!! I won’t hand it over to my kids just yet, as the pages on the French Revolution, Holocaust, and biology have some details they aren’t quite ready for, but I think it will be a really fun read-aloud!

Quite thorough for a book only a little over 300 pages long, and I really enjoyed seeing everything laid out and summed up so crisply. I do wish the book had been more carefully edited, though, as I kept stumbling upon instances of BCE or even AD used when CE was intended, dates out of order on the timelines or inconsistently listed on various pages, and perplexingly vague descriptions ("future president Benjamin Franklin," huh? president of what? Pennsylvania? the Academy and College of Philadelphia? the American Philosophical Society? the Pennsylvania Abolition Society? and when you say "east" in reference to the Mongol expansion, do you really mean "Middle East" or did you actually intend to write "west" there?).

I ended up doing a lot more fact-check Google searches than "ooh, I want to learn more!" Google searches...though sometimes the one did lead to the other. (Did you know the moai on Easter Island were walked not rolled or dragged? And that Mt. Vesuvius is much more likely to have erupted in October or November, not August as Pliny the Younger, and this book, describe?) So a win-win, really, as long as you have an internet search engine handy.

Generally a neat book, and granted, with "Timelines of Everything", you can't fit everything in. but, some concerns - still, it shouldn't provide anything downright misleading.

There is too much laziness of it showing history as a sequence of isolated events. The World Religions page is a travesty - it shows religions seemingly "starting" at one point in time, and doesn't explain the evolution of related religions such as Judaism / Christianity / Islam. A lost opportunity for showing interconnectedness.

Also, it came up empty on some practical questions my 7 year old had: Who created the first schools? When was the first "home" built? (and by that, she specified something like a 2-story brick house.) I couldn't find anything on those.

Otherwise, hope to this does prove useful over time!

An exhaustive timeline of everything under the sun, it was! It was great for perspective whether you're a creationist or not, as well. It chronicled nature, fashion, politics, all the wars, presidents, more than what you can imagine.

However, I would have appreciated more detailed yet concise descriptions for some items. Whereas a lot of other places, it was just this. 5 Stars.

Lacking. Just an example: the pages about "Sharing stories" omits completely the bible and Don Quixote, but does not fail to mention Harry Potter.

Perfect non-fiction book for a primary school, covering a vast range of topics. Each page forms a different timeline for example, the story of the universe, ships or the story of dance. The pages are all very visually appealing making them easy to follow and enjoyable to look at. This would be a great resource to have in a primary school, both for children to read for pleasure and for researching use. Because of how visual the pages are, this book could be used with children in year one up to year 6s who would be able to make good use of the vast information from the text. A lovely addition to a primary classroom.

This is not the sort of book you read cover-to-cover, there is just too much to absorb! I'm pretty sure if you did read and absorb all of this, you will have learnt everything you ever really need to know about the past. From the obvious (Timeline of WW2) to the more obscure (Timeline of the wheel- who knew there was enough for a double-page spread on that!) this covers loads of topics. Perfect for most classrooms and topics, those of you wishing to improve your pub-quiz knowledge or just dipping into when you have the time, this book is fabulous. I also really enjoyed the array of layouts and fabulous photos and designs.

No, I haven't read it all, but I did look at all the pages. It would take years to read this. It is over 300 pages and more the sort of thing to dip into where your interest takes you.
Another beautiful Dorling-Kindersley book - this one an ambitious project. "Everything" eh? They do their best to include Asia and Africa. The timelines take all shapes and are slightly less fussy than those in the When On Earth book.

This is a fantastic book. It covers so all the different eras of history using timelines with excellent pictures. The book is fascinating for adults, but would be great for school children. I would recommend this for children in Key Stage 2 at least as the text would be too challenging for KS1. The pictures look fantastic and complete the engaging information included in the timeline.

This is a wonderful book with the delightful graphics illustrating a myriad assortment of topics throughout history. A cunning way to get children interested in history. Easily accessible and beautifully illustrated, this book is filled with fascinating maps, mazes and pictorial designs that enhance the process of assimilating data and factoids on subjects from throughout the ages.

Found this at Costco! (Shameless plug: They have some of the best books I've ever seen.) I picked up this book and "Timelines of Everything". This is a DK book, so you know the information is good and the illustrations are beautiful. But I really enjoyed the set-up of this book too. Very clean and orderly. However, I did prefer Timelines of Everything over Timelines of Everyone.

Felt like a History book

This took me WAY longer than I thought it would to get through 😅
But I felt like I learned new things and remembered things I'd learned in the past. Some parts did get repetitive, but overall I felt it was organized pretty well and it was a nice summary of history.
I found myself stopping to look a few things up along the way too to learn more 😄👍
