Moto Hagio (萩尾望都 Hagio Moto) is a manga artist born in Ōmuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, though she currently lives in Saitama Prefecture.
She is considered a "founding mother" of modern shōjo manga, and a member of the Year 24 Group (24-Gumi). She helped pioneer modern shōjo manga, modern science fiction manga, and BL manga. In addition to being an "industry pioneer", her body of work "shows a maturity, depth and personal vision found only in the finest of creative artists". She has been described as "the most beloved shōjo manga artist of all time."

Moto Hagio made her professional debut in 1969 at the age of 20 with her short story Lulu to Mimi on Kodansha's magazine Nakayoshi. Later she produced a series of short stories for various magazines for Shogakukan.
Two years after her debut, she published Juichigatsu no Gimunajiumu (The November Gymnasium), a short story which dealt openly with love between two boys at a boarding school. The story was part of a larger movement by female manga artists at the time which pioneered a genre of girls' comics about love between young men.
In 1974, Hagio developed this story into the longer Toma no shinzo (The Heart of Thomas). She was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1976 for her science fiction classic Juichinin iru! (They Were Eleven) and her epic tale Poe no ichizoku (The Poe Family).

The title story & Afternoon Sunshine were really moving. The other stories weren’t great. Absolutely love the art style though!

Me dio tanta pena el personaje, la iguana está tan tiernamente dibujada. Al leer este manga me viene a la mente una frase que leí por ahí que dice: "Todos los niños merecen tener padres, pero no todos los padres merecen tener hijos"

Iguana Girl - This short story moves very quickly and is very sad, though the story tries to make it more fantastical with the main character only ever depicted as an iguana. Apparently, this story is semi-autobiographical and was made to show the author's strained relationship with her mother. The mother in this manga appears to be suffering from a sort of post-partum psychosis and is convinced her first daughter is an iguana. This delusion doesn't extend to the second daughter, and as a result, the first daughter is treated poorly by the mother her entire life. The manga is clearly showing how the treatment of a parent can affect someone's entire mental psyche. The ending is also bittersweet, but a satisfying ending.

Catharsis -
This story features a more stereotypical storyline, but it's still just as sad as Iguana Girl. This story focuses mostly on the main character wanting to stop being forced down a life path he really doesn't want. His parents are fairly awful when it comes to emotional problems. Every time the main character tries to show emotion, the parents dismiss him and tell him to focus on his studies. If it doesn't have to do with his schooling or becoming successful, they do not care about it. The story does a decent job showing how much of a mental and emotional toll this has taken on the main character throughout his life.

Afternoon Sunshine -
Hmm, this one I didn't fully care for. This features a woman who appears to be in a loveless marriage and finds herself getting lost in the idea of romance with a new man she's just met. This story has a lot of internal strife. Also, it's very painfully clear that this story was made in the 90s with some extremely outdated viewpoints on how a woman should act. This story shows that fantasy often doesn't match up to reality, and usually reality is better than you thought. However, the ending was a bit unsatisfying.

The Pills That Help You Go to School -
This one I also didn't much care for. It's very fantastical but in a very confusing way. It focuses on several students, but the through-line of the plot doesn't really come across well. I would give this one a solid 2.5

My Friend K -
This story was very short, and I'm pretty sure it was supposed to imply gay panic? There was nothing of substance within this story, but honestly, the concept had a little potential. Pretty unsatisfying end to this story collection, but oh well.
