Lazarus Rising #5

Lie Close To Me

Rate this book
He’s Lazarus, and so is she. What happens when their worlds collide?

He’s hunting her. Maddox Kane has one goal—track Luna Ashton. He’s the best hunter on his team, finely honed and designed by Uncle Sam to be an unstoppable killing machine. He’s a super solider—faster, stronger, and deadlier than anyone else. Maddox keeps his emotions under careful lock and key because he can’t afford to feel. Feeling is too dangerous, and the attraction Maddox feels for Luna is positively lethal.

Luna has no memory of being in the labs with Maddox. She doesn’t remember the connection they shared when they were trapped in hell. She doesn’t remember escaping the facility. She doesn’t remember him. So when Maddox hunts her down, she’s terrified of him…and of the strange psychic and sensual connection they seem to share. Surely she shouldn’t want him so much?

Luna is different from the other Lazarus subjects, and Maddox isn’t the only one hunting her. She’s a dangerous threat to Project Lazarus, and Luna isn’t going to be allowed to just slip away from the U.S. government…or from the other super soldiers who are also desperate to find her.

Every Lazarus subject has incredible psychic gifts. Some Lazarus subjects can make people see their worst fears, some can control minds…but Luna’s gift—she can show people their memories. Luna has the ability to restore memories to all of the other Lazarus subjects, yet she can’t see her own past.

And if you can’t see your past…then you never know what danger is coming, what killer is standing right next to you, touching you, lying to you…not until it is too late.

A very good read!

As some of my lovely GR friends I struggled a bit at the beginning. Also because I couldn't understand who were these characters? The more I read, the more I mix them up 🤔

Good hero. Strong and sweet.

Great strong heroine. Liked her a lot.

She 'borrowed' my favourite Sunday dinner line 😉.

4.5 - "You won't be running from me again." Stars!

Eden delivers again with the fifth book in the Lazarus Rising series, in that not only does she introduce and integrate a set of new characters, she manages to bring the original group back into the story at the same time as well.

"I don’t take orders any longer…"

The spin this time (if you will) is that both Maddox Kane and Luna Ashton are Project Lazarus guinea pigs, so the relationship between the two super soldiers has a different dynamic than the past few couples.

"We lost ourselves when we joined Lazarus."

As you would expect the author offers up the usual thrills, spills, sexy times, action and adventure. And whilst Maddox was a deliciously dirty alpha, Luna wasn’t shy about asking for what she wanted as well, and that confidence gave the dynamic between them an extra zing!

"I’m afraid of how I feel about you… And I’m afraid that I won’t feel without you…"

I read this book in one sitting, Eden has a way of pulling you in as a reader, you are immersed in the story, and I love that the doors have been opened for at least another book (hopefully more) to come from this series in the future.

He was like ice... She was fire.

This is an author that excels at Romantic Suspense, and PNR and with a little of both going on it makes this series another keeper for me.

"I will always come back to you."

This is the best one yet!!! Oh my, Maddox! I didn't think anyone could beat the first book but Maddox just took the prize. I loved everything about this book. Maddox is a big reason, but not the only reason. His and Luna's story was captivating. Their unique gifts added an extra element to the story line and overall plot.

This series is full of action and suspense. The characters are super soldiers that were altered with a chemical a scientist created to bring back the dead. Each with their own unique gifts. Each dangerous in their own way. Some turn bad, some turn good. The government are trying to cage them and use them as weapons in warfare. Treating them as if they are animals and not people.

These men and women are loyal soldiers until they meet their mate. Their mates ground them, keep the darkness away. The are protective and very possessive of their mate. Their loyalty changes to that person and the government is not happy about that.

With each new book and each new couple, they fight to break free of their prison and the rogue are gathering together coming closer and closer to destroying the Lazarus project.

Cynthia Eden has succeeded in bringing an exciting new series to the romantic suspense genre! I can't wait to for Jett's story! ARC provided by NetGalley.

I loved this book. At first I wasn't sure about the hero and heroine. Thank goodness my opinion was changed.
I just loved how protective he was of her.
He was an awesome hero, he was badass, gone for his heroine. Loved her like no other. In the beginning I thought the heroine was going to be like the heroine from the previous book. (Willow) she was vulnerable but she turned out to be just as badass as the hero was.
I won't spoil the story (that's a first right?) lol.
I'm happy to say that Maddox kicked Sawyer so hard from his seat and now he has planted himself as the best hero in the series (for me at least).
This book had me guessing left and right and at some point I even thought the hero was in it too.
If I'm right, the next book will be Jett's! Can't wait to read it!

Each book in this series just gets better and better and this one is by far my favorite!

As a part of the Lazarus project, Luna becomes aware that the powers in control are planning to terminate her. Using her psychic link she sends a message to Maddox, another subject in the program. When she awakens in a deserted hospital she is lost and confused. She doesn’t trust the man that appears and kidnaps her. He’s saying the right things but she’s not sure whether to believe him or not.

Luna was an amazing heroine. She is strong and talented but broken due to her circumstances. Maddox has one goal and that is to protect her at all cost. As this story unwinds there are many twists and turns and lots of action as more is revealed about the project. I was thrilled to learn what Luna’s special talent was and to consider all the possible ramifications of it. This is going to open up a whole new avenue for the series.

I loved this couple so much as they struggle to stay together while battling unseen and unknown villains. It’s a dangerous place to be when you can’t even trust yourself or your body. This author has one wild imagination and I couldn’t be more thankful for it!

Fast paced and well written, it is filled with plenty of drama, lots of heart stopping action, wonderful secondary characters and enough steam and chemistry that you’ll need a fan nearby. While this is a series and it’s best to read from the beginning, I feel that they could be read as a standalone. This author tends to give enough background to cover anything you might have missed previously. Just the way I like my series to be!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dual POV
Safe – some om drama but not what you would typically expect; I consider this a safe read

This series is certainly back on glorious form . Much as I enjoyed the previous story Run To Me it just to this reader lacked a little something. This book however has all the elements that made this series so gripping right from the very first book.
The author throws us right into world of Lazarus as from the first page we realise that these super soldiers might be amazing but they are also considered to be expendable. Luna overhears something that causes her to rebel meaning she would leave behind her team and the one man who has always been there for her. Maddox has had feelings for Luna right from the start but unlike him when she is resurrected she forgets everything so is truly vulnerable. He won’t let her down, he won’t lose her but when she disappears Maddox goes hunting but is he the only one with a connection to Luna ?
These characters may return from the dead but they never remember their lives before Lazarus although they do remember everything since. So imagine just how different it is for Luna as her memory is always wiped completely clean. It’s a terrifying thought because whoever is with her can lie, manipulate and control her. Luna has abilities that make her dangerous to those in charge of Lazarus but she also is often underrated.
I devoured this book and I loved the strong connection shared by Luna and Maddox. The amnesia Luna from suffers means holding on to life and not rebooting is even more important to her. There’s an intense chemistry between the couple and I loved that Luna could surprise Maddox. There’s a dark side that the author explores with villains that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Interesting secondary characters (both old and new) with so much drama as we hurtled towards the end with shocks, action, danger and of course romance. I love this series as its fast, full of suspense and adds just a wee touch of the paranormal without swamping the story.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Interesting.

But to be honest, I got a bit exhausted reading this. Main characters constantly getting attacked and or dying is a bit of a turn off for me. The hero dies at least 3 or 4 times in one book and after the 4th time I was just like "OK I GET IT!"

The chemistry is ALWAYS great when I read a Cynthia Eden book, but unfortunately I didnt think the plot was quite there. There were too many subplots on top of the main overarching one. I get why it needs to be there, but at the same time, the characters all start monologging when they're about to do something and it takes me out of the action. And I find this to be a recurring theme in Ms Edens books.

All good though. I simply adored the characters and their chemistry, I just didn't find the characters back story to be quite as interesting this go around.

And one more thing... was the hero a virgin?!? He said a few times the heroine was the only one for him sooooooooo..... virgin hero? Maybe?

I love this series!! I think Maddox is my favourite hero in this series now. He is everything that I love in a hero, and I loved how he never gave up on the heroine.
Speaking of, she was pretty awesome, too! Loved how she trusted the hero even though her memories weren't all there and everyone was trying to mess with her head. I also liked how she wasn't completely sure, held back a bit because she was scared of what was happening between them. Usually it's the heroine who is falling all over herself to get the hero to notice her, so this was a nice change ;)
Can't wait for the next one!

I felt like this one was more suspenful than ever lol

I had a good time coming back to this world and feeling like it's a new beginning because it felt a bit different yet we saw the first characters again and it was cool.

Maddox and Luna were very sweet together and completly madly in love with each other.
They were strong and had an interesting past, everything was related which was done nicely by the author.

I hope we'll have Jett and Andreas's book !!

I can't get enough of this series! There is always some connection between the hero and the heroine but the books where they knew each other before their "death" make it even better, in my opinion. This one was especially bittersweet since Luna is different than all the other Lazarus subjects. When they die and come back they don't lose any of their memories since becoming Lazarus. Luna, however, wakes up with no memories at all, not even her Lazarus memories.

Not only does Luna lose all of her memories but she has the ability to restore the memories of all the Lazarus subjects. Eden does a great job of explaining this ability. This leads to a scene between my favorite couple, Sawyer and Elizabeth, where he remembers first seeing Elizabeth and I wanted to cry!!! I also wanted a longer scene with them when he remembered but I will take what I can get!!

I highly recommend this book and this entire series. I haven't read all of her paranormal series' but I can honestly say, this one is probably her best...

Maddox is such an alpha hero and he loves Luna and will do anything to protect her. Please read this series. You won't be disappointed!

Quotes & Faves:

“I couldn’t find you.” His words were a rough rasp. “You were gone.”

But his hand slid down her cheek. He leaned closer. Pressed a kiss to her lips. “It was so easy to get addicted.” “Addicted?” She stared at him, completely lost. “To you. A taste was all I needed.” For an instant, he almost looked tender.

It wasn’t anger. “Baby, I fucking hate when you hurt.” Her eyes widened. He pressed a kiss to her cheek. “If I had my way, you’d never know pain again.”

And no one hurts my Luna.

A tear leaked from her eye. “I don’t…I don’t want to forget you…” Her voice whispered through his mind.

“I will always come back for you.” His voice was clear. Strong. “There is nothing on this earth—nothing in heaven or hell—that could keep me from you.”

If I was horrified by subjects rising from the dead in a macabre fashion from the first book, Cynthia Eden’s characters do it rather regularly now to the point where I find myself quite immune to these ‘risings’, only for the fact that it proves to be a reset button that’s both a boon and a bane to read about. ‘Lie With Me’—Eden’s 5th outing into this series—was just a book I wanted to get into despite my own personal misgivings about this series, because the subject matter is darkly seductive enough to draw me in.

But I wasn’t entirely too sure what I was reading about as well, to be honest, even up to the halfway mark of the story, or how it all tied into the first few books and this wasn’t rolled out early on enough for me to catch on. So I trudged along trying to make sense of it myself, even if the lack of signposting was just not helpful. The roundabout teasers about who Maddox and Luna were but not confirmed until later, the villain playing tricks (or truth?) in both the characters’ and the reader’s head, and the somewhat repetitive action of more Lazarus soldiers seemingly joining in the fray rather randomly simply added to my confusion instead of clearing it up. It did get better later though, as Eden brought in characters from previous books while seemingly expanding the narrative arc of this series.

Apart from this, well, I can’t deny that there is series-fatigue setting in where things started to sound same-y. Eden’s cackling villains are evil to the point of funny at times, her supersoldiers start to blend into each other to the point where Maddox could easily be Sawyer who could easily be Flynn…both in behaviour (all are darkly and growly possessive, have raging breeder-type tempers and say ‘mine’ too often) and in general appearance (all are tall, muscled and so on).

I can see where this might be an attractive boon for some readers nonetheless—with past slates wiped clean, no other mentions of other lovers (who’re automatically considered inconsequential), and altered personalities to the point where the heroine becomes the sole, intense focus of the changed hero who would do anything to keep her with him.

The new-ish bits that kept me going on were simply these: the fact that Eden finally writes the possibility of recovering a Lazarus soldier’s past, and the expansion of the abilities of these soldiers, like Luna. And perhaps it’s development enough to see me through another book in this series.

Book 5 introduces us to a new couple, Luna & Maddox, from the Arizona facility. While Luna is a Lazarus subject (super soldier), she's also a bit of a damsel in distress as her extra talents are amazing but leave her a bit vulnerable. Maddox is only too willing to be protective of her.

I love the overall story arc that this has evolved into and that each stand alone story/couple just builds upon that. It's also very cool seeing what new talents evolve with the Lazarus subjects.

Here's hoping there's a few more stories ahead.

Lie Close To Me has the Lazarus Rising series rising to the top of my favorites chart. The captivating characters just keep getting better and even sexier as the story continues and I love the way Cynthia Eden portrayed the hero and the heroine in this one, it made for one interesting twist in the story line that added to the intrigue and thrills. Luna and Maddox may just turn out to be my favorite couple in the series as well, there sizzling chemistry leapt off the pages and made it easy for me to picture them as a couple because they just fit together. The story was full of angst that draw readers in and has them empathizing with all the problems that this couple are facing while the depth of feeling that this couple has for each other made me sigh with ‘wow’ feelings.  The suspense throughout the story just keeps on building and pulled me in the direction it wanted me go as it kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next and which bad guy would turn out to be the really bad guy.

Cynthia Eden just has a gift for adding little events that add to the tension of a story and makes readers hold their breath with suspense and anticipation, she also makes her stories come together in such a way that I can picture it all happening and it is completely believable which makes me really excited when the good guys get their hard earned happily ever after and of course I can’t wait for the next book in the Lazarus Rising series or at least I’m hoping there is more to come.

This book was a chore to finish. The story went down hill with every chapter. There is a lot of confusion regarding the h and what happened to her. I don't think this aspect of the story was written well. But the worst part was that once a villain had cornered the H or h, they spend a long time explaining their plans and motives. It was so ridiculous. They revealed EVERYTHING!!

It's no secret that I love this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment in the series. It was action packed, had some twists and turns, steamy scenes and added new dynamics to the Lazarus world that has me excited to see what happens next.

If you love romance with action and super soldiers I can't recommend this series enough.

I started this book with some trepidation. I really want more books in the Lazarus series but after the first book, the others that followed had been kind of meh. This fifth one turned out to be pretty good.

Maddox was a strong, charismatic hero. The way he was described at the beginning, I was half in love with him already. He was super badass and fiercely protective of Luna. Add in decency and loyalty, he was irresistible.

The idea of a Lazarus losing her entire memory every time she died reminded me of Cynthia Eden’s Phoenix Fire series. It had to be frightening for Luna to wake up every time with no memory, not knowing who she could trust. She handled it with admirable aplomb. Luna had an inner strength that made me like her a lot.

The twists and turns kept me at the edge of my seat, turning the next page. I enjoyed this book more than I’d expected.

Luna, is one of the Lazarus Project enhanced soldiers. The only problem is Luna never remembers who and what she is after each death she experience. She can restore others memory's of there past life but not her own, she is also, a healer.

Maddox has loved Luna ever since they were kids and someone has captured her. Maddox finds Luna strapped to an examine table in a run down lab. When Luna awakens she doesn't remember Maddox or herself again. This is the one problem I had with the book. They died to many times and came back. There are groups of forces trying to capture Luna. Some Lazarus subjects so they can use her healing abilities and to restore there memories. One in particular an ex lover of Luna's and her and Maddox childhood friend Adam Brock. Adam has also been enhanced but because he was deranged before he died and was made a Lazarus Soldier, he is even crazier now. He is obsessed with Luna The other forces want to kill her so she can't restore there memories. The forces that created the program don't want the Lazarus subjects to know they didn't join them willingly. They also, don't want them to remembering family and loved ones that could distract them from being the devoted Soldier .

Maddox and Luna are on the run during the whole story and she begins to remember how much she loves Maddox. They have a sensual love affair. The story is very action packed. Some force always seems to catch up with them. They eventually whined up with the good group of Lazarus Forces Swayer Cage, Dr. Elizabeth Parker the creator of the Lazarus serum and Flynn from bks. 1
and 2. I always love when reading a series you get go back and reunite with former H/H.

Over all "Lie Close to Me" is a good story with lots action and suspense. I can't wait to see whose story is next. Now that Maddox team member knows they can have children Jett is off to find his ex lover. I hope his story is next!!

I honestly thought that the Lazarus Rising Series would wind down after Run to Me. The characters in that book were two that I had really want to read their story. However, if anything Cynthia Eden has ramped it up a notch with Lie Close to Me, the fifth Lazarus Rising book. The tightly woven plot is packed with lots of intrigue, suspense, action, and of course steamy romance between Maddox and Luna.

New characters with new abilities along with the support of old characters and maybe, a big maybe, new international villains made this story the best so far. Maddox and Luna are both Lazarus soldiers who worked on the same team. This is a first where both main characters are enhanced.

For those new to the series, they may want to start at the beginning, but I feel enough background on the old characters is given when needed that confusion would not be a problem, especially since only key characters show up, not all from all the previous books. The overarching theme is also pretty obvious so no confusion there either. With the new reveal in this story I have my fingers tightly crossed as to Jett getting the next story.

Lie Close to Me is part of the best near future science fiction/suspense/romance series going. I can highly recommend this book along with all books in the series. I feel I should warn you to be prepared to not want to put this book down once you start reading until you reach the very last page. It is just that good.

An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Well I’m sad to say I was a little disappointed in this book and I was starting to get a little bored at times. I was expecting something epic as both Maddox and Luna were both enhanced but it felt a little flat to me. All the way through I kept thinking ok so Sawyer and the gang are gonna show up any minute but I waited and waited and waited some more and was finally rewarded just as I was about to give up hope. I felt that the ending was a bit rushed and everything seemed to get wrapped up quickly. It sounds like I didn’t enjoy the book but that’s not the case, I guess I’m just greedy and wanted MORE!
I did actually like both MC’s and I was very intrigued with Luna and of course Maddox was a protective alpha. I am hoping to see a lot more of both of them further in the series.

Maddox is a possessive one, "Maddox’s expression was absolutely lethal. “You don’t screw around with her.” He looked back at Luna. “No, you are not sleeping with him.” Maddox is always thinking about his woman 's safety, "she headed into the small room, and Maddox came with her. He closed the door, then turned toward her, frowning. “Baby, are you sure about this?” I really like this series, things are starting to get interesting with the new developments.

This was such a fantastic entry into this series! Exciting, fun, suspenseful, action-packed, romantic, hot, and absolutely thrilling. I loved every second of it. Maddox was the perfect alpha male. His deep love for Luna was swoon worthy. And Luna was strong, smart, and resilient. She's thrown into a terrifying position and I loved how this entire story played out. Definitely recommend to Eden fans and fans of this series.

GOD. DAMN. Another SUPER OUTSTANDING, UTTERLY AMAZING, HAD ME ON THE EDGE OF A CLIFF ROMANTIC SUSPENSE WITH A HERO WHO IS TO DIE FOR AND A VERY SPECIAL HEROINE THAT I LIKED EVER SO MUCH!

I have LOVED and I do mean LOVED TO THE NTH DEGREE, EVERY single Lazarus Rising story. But Lie Close To Me, I think I LOVED EVEN MORE. LIKE LOVED IT TO THE MOON AND BACK AGAIN type of love! Maddox is unbelievably one of the most likable heroes ever. Sexy, strong, protective and totally kick-a**, he is the very type of hero my heart swoops for. And Luna..WOW! Her powers are AMAZING and she is the most special Lazarus subject to date! Maddox and Luna have a past together that connects them...even after Lazarus. The bond is CRAZY intense and strong...almost unbreakable. And the non-stop action and danger is so exciting and thrilling. I dived into this book and didn't want to leave. I am even more addicted to these books now and want the next one LIKE YESTERDAY! I FLOOOOOOOVED IT FREAKING HARD!

It was okay, but it feels like some of the story elements were on shaky ground.

Like, why would they want to kill Luna? I mean, I honestly don't even understand why they would send her on missions.

I also wish I understood the memory thing better, but it feels like there was a lot of hand-waving going on.

Also, I didn't really like Maddox. I despise that he was happy to lie to her in order to make her do what he wants. And he reiterates that multiple times in this book (and we hear it in his internal narration repeatedly). It makes him no better than the lab coats at Lazarus or the people hunting her - a douche who is happy to take advantage of her lack of memory in order to control and manipulate her. That honestly made me sick.

Also: Jay is still a bag of shit.

This fifth book in the Lazarus Rising series takes place in a different facility after the Arizona facility burned down, so there are new characters but this book includes major characters from the previous books.

Luna is different from other Lazarus subjects, she loses her memory every time she dies. Each time she awakens she is lost and afraid, not understanding what is happening. Maddox is her team leader and he is always there when she awakens to help her come back. When Luna overhears a comment that she is to be terminated, she panics, sends a psychic message to Maddox, and the next thing she knows is waking up in a deserted hospital with no memories.

Maddox is the best hunter; when he tracks her down she doesn’t remember him and she is terrified of him but still feels a connection to him. He knows she was scheduled to be terminated and is focused on saving her and escaping from the Lazarus project.

I liked the new characters with different physic abilities. Maddox’s feelings are so strong for Luna that he is scary and needs to keep his emotions in check (similar to other Lazarus subjects). Luna is sweet, her psychic skill is healing.

Cynthia Eden’s Lazarus Rising series follows the lives of enhanced super soldiers, created to from death to kill. Victims of a crazy Lazarus experiment, Maddox Kane is hunting Luna to save her from being terminated. Luna is on the run from an unknown threat, her powers of giving memories back to the soldiers making her one of the most powerful enhanced soldier.

Maddox Kane always had his eyes on Luna and he will kill anyone that comes across his path in protecting her. The sparks fire up into fiery passion with death and betrayal shadowing their every move. Teaming with the rest of the soldiers to face the threats, Maddox and Luna have their backs protected. And as always re-visiting the previous characters is always a pleasure.

Another fast paced romantic suspense narration from Cynthia Eden; “Lie Close To Me” is another great read for Eden’s fans. With every book, there are so many connections and secrets harbored in these stories, making the series pretty captivating and scintillating.

Received an ARC from the author and Hocus Pocus Publishing via Netgalley for an honest review.
