Rate this book

Winner - Gourmand World Cookbook Awards: Best UK Chinese Cookbook 2017

Stir-frying is one of the quickest and easiest ways to cook - and one of the healthiest, using little oil and retaining more nutrients than many other methods. It also requires very little equipment - all you need a wok, a knife and a chopping board. Learning what separates a good stir-fry from a great one, however, is not always so easy to master. Indeed, it is all about timing, knowing when to add what and how to get the best out of each ingredient. With tips on everything from controlling the heat to using the right oil, bestselling author Ching-He Huang has gathered together a collection of delicious dishes, simple enough for every day and with nutrition, taste and affordability in mind. Many are gluten and dairy free, as well as suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and include both Asian and Western ingredients readily available in any supermarket. So whether or not you eat meat, love carbs or prefer to avoid them, want something special or find yourself having to feed your family, Stir Crazy will do the trick.

Excellent book for those looking for lots of stir fry recipes from vegetarian to meat eater options. This book inspired me to buy a new wok, I haven't had one for years...I don't really remember what ever happened to my old one. It has good information on both the purchase and use of woks and why different materials are good or bad. It does try to sell a wok created and marketed by the author but the links listed did not give me an option to purchase in the US. I wasn't planning to purchase theirs but I wanted to compare qualities to those I can find around me. I just thought it a bit weird that it is a new book and links area already invalid, but that might be something the author has no control over. The recipes themselves are all solid, easy to make for someone experienced looking for new ideas or even someone new to cooking various stir fry options. They thought about different eating habits and there are sections and recipes for everyone or ideas on how to tweak recipes for your families diet. I already had an idea on how to make some fried rice and stir fry but this will help me to expand the few dishes I know and be able to experiment with other flavors.

I'm not sure how one "reads" a cookbook, but I tried my best. We even made one of the recipes!

The concept of the book is great and all the pictures look good! That being said, due to the constrictions of the book's theme, the recipes are kinda repetitive and so get a bit boring:
1. heat the wok
2. add ginger, etc.
3. add veggies and meat
4. deglaze with rice wine

The recipe we tried was solid but nothing too crazy. To be fair, we don't have a wok and didn't have all the ingredients but I feel like Taiwanese basil isn't the easiest to find. Also the timing of trying to do everything in time (I burnt the ginger) was stressful and didn't work out well : (
