How I became the Fittest Woman on Earth

My story so far, by Tia-Clair Toomey

Ever since I was in primary school I loved to compete. I lived for sport, particularly running, and would push myself to the limit to become better than yesterday. It may come as a surprise to you, but I always came second; I was always the underdog, that person who just fell short. But something in me never gave up, I just felt that fire in my belly get stronger and stronger – I wanted do more, be more, achieve more.

The day I finally came first was something I had always dreamed of. At twenty-four years old, I was crowned the winner of the 2017 Crossfit Games, and officially became the Fittest Woman on Earth. When I heard my name called in front of thousands of cheering fans, I felt like I was invincible, I felt like I was on top of the world and like everything up until that point actually made sense.

With the support of my family, my partner Shane and coaches along the way, I was able to finally achieve my dream of being number one. This is my story of how I got to where I am today. I hope you enjoy it but more importantly I hope that it inspires you to dream big, work hard and never give up!

Tia Clair Toomey is a great athlete, seems to be a relatable, humble and fun person. This book, however, while it reads very quickly, feels like a school composition piece. I guess you shouldn’t expect too much from elite athletes writing books.

The target audience of this one is very specific; only CrossFit aficionados will find it relatable or even understandable due to the density of terms of movements and events. The story itself is really not very developed to say the least.

The one thing that’s fun in this one is that it’s not as full of banal motivational quotes (as in Katrin’s case) and actually provides some programming, nutrition and other plans.

The only question is why was there such a rush to write and sell this one? Did nobody really expect her to pack up at least the 2 other consecutive wins...?
Just food for thought, I guess.

Tia-Clair Toomey's memoir, How I Became The Fittest Woman On Earth: My Story So Far, is a quick and enjoyable read.

Can’t say it’s super inspiring or anything of that caliber, but it is VERY interesting to learn more about the queen of CrossFit, the sport that I’m currently living and breathing. Also, I really admire Tia and Shane’s partnership. What a power couple!

Next, I loved the appendix with Tia's tips on nutrition, recovery, mindset, and training. And I really appreciated the pages of color photos. Track and CrossFit competitions, training sessions, childhood, wedding -- loved them all!

OK, now on to the hard part of the reviewing process, aka, things that could have been better. There is no way to say it nicely, but the writing is very poor: lack of punctuation, run on sentences, fragments, you name it. Also, the flow between the paragraphs is often nonexistent. All these grammatical and structural flaws make the story feel very conversational, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It just seems like Kaia Wright, the co-author, wrote down everything that Tia said word for word and didn’t care to edit it. Unfortunately, the simplistic writing sometimes makes Tia-Clair Toomey sound kind of… simple.

I'm a fan of Tia-Clair Toomey’s YouTube vlogs and grew to admire her not only as an athlete but also as a person. However, the way Tia-Clair Toomey describes the earlier years of her CrossFit career in How I Became The Fittest Woman On Earth seems kind of disingenuous. She clearly was exceptionally good at the sport from the get-go, so why pretend otherwise? I mean, who shows up at the competition and PR's their Clean and Jerk by 35 kg when it's already at your bodyweight?!? And that's like two months into the sport, or something like that. Yet I had a good laugh when I came across the following: “…now you know that I was just a normal person who was determined to achieve my dreams.” If that's really the case, I wish Tia-Clair Toomey emphasized more the work she put in because she makes her progress seem effortless and frankly unattainable instead of relatable.

Furthermore, there is a constant tug of war between the way Tia-Clair Toomey conveys her expectations and evaluates her achievements. On one hand, she doesn't expect to win but basically annihilates the competition. Similarly, she demonstrates incredible results early on in her career yet cannot believe when a renowned weightlifting coach wants to work with her. On the other hand, she places second at the CrossFit Games and two weeks later represents Australia in weightlifting at the Rio Olympics, but the title of that particular chapter is “Double Whammy.” Maybe it's just me but such a constant disconnect between her expectations and achievements also seems disingenuous.

Finally, I’m a bit surprised to say that I didn’t love Tia-Clair Toomey’s attitude in this book. The minute the going gets tough -- enter mean competitors and an injury -- she is ready to throw everything away because it's not fun anymore. Something I would do, LOL. As I said earlier, not particularly inspiring.

Toujours fascinant de voir le passé actif et sportif des champions. On se rend rapidement compte que rien n’est laissé au hasard et que Tia était prédisposée à accomplir de grandes choses. Intéressant pour les fans de Crossfit.

Like having a chat with a mate! (Albeit a very inspiring mate). The story of a down-to-earth girl's journey to achieving her goals. Talent didn't get her there alone; drive, determination and so much hardwork. So much to admire about tjis young woman. I loved her honesty and found her really relatable. I am an absolute fan now and will be barracking for her at the 2018 Crossfit Games.

Interesting story, full of honesty and simplicity. Writing is easy but I consider it as advantage for this type of book. It gives a feeling you are talking eye to eye at a dinner table.

I was hoping to learn a bit more about how she finds the drive to be the best in the sport. I appreciated how vulnerable she was at some points, especially when she was talking about body image & accepting that if she wanted to be strong/the best in the sport she needed to accept and learn to love her muscles.

Awesome story on becoming physically and mentally strong and what it takes to become the best possible version of yourself.
Love the humour and side stories of everyday life included in the story. Makes you realize that professional athletes really are just real people. 💯

I love Tia as an athlete and as a person. She's very humble and down to Earth, and it clearly shows in the way that she tells her story. However, I believe that her editors could've done a better job retouching the textual flow here and there. Pagination-wise, I also thought the bunch of pages with photographs didn't make much sense since they were out of order and randomly put in the middle of the book. It would've been nicer to see the images of younger Tia contextualised in the beginning of the book - where she's actually talking about her childhood.

It's an okay book, but I wouldn't really recommend it if your goal is to get to know this fantastic athlete better. You'd be better off watching her YouTube channel and comp videos. In my opinion, the book didn't add much value compared to the high-quality content that is already out there.

Nevertheless, Tia not a writer and she clearly put in a lot of work in trying to write her story as best as she could and that does deserve credit. My review goes out especially to the editors, who could've been more meticulous.

Great book

This book goes to prove the common philosophy of success: Overcoming doubt and having a winners mindset is the one thing that separates winner from loser.
You can only win if you think you can.

No. Just no.

Giant font, huge spacing, and poorly edited. This whole thing should have just been a blog post somewhere. It feels like a grade school writing project with its lack of editing and drifting around without ever landing on a point.

Really nice motivating story. Even more so after just recently learning about the growth mindset, which Tia and Shane both obviously have. Really good nutrition advice at the end

Not particularly deep or well written, but Tia is one of my favourite athletes so it was interesting to read about her life.

This book was so much fun to read! I loved how she wrote about all the things that it took for her to become the amazing crossfit athlete that she is today and not just about the crossfit games. I had no idea that Tia had written a book and when I found out, I was so happy! They did not have the book in my local bookstore so I had to order it and wait a week before it finally arrived at my house. It was definitely worth the wait.
One of my favorite parts of the book is when she talks about how many sports she was involved in as a kid and how she first got into crossfit after she moved away from the Sunshine Coast. I thought it was really cool how she had done multiple sports before she finally came across crossfit and I was really surprised to find out that she had done swimming when she was younger. I thought that was really cool because I swam competitively when I was little too, and now, I also do crossfit.
Another thing that I really loved about this book is when I could see connections between the book and the 2017 crossfit games documentary, “The Redeemed and the Dominant”. I would be reading and they could have been in the middle of describing an event and I would think, “Oh yeah, I remember that event from the documentary.” I especially liked how she put a bunch of pictures in the middle of the book to show us her journey from when she was just a kid to the 2017 crossfit games.
I thought it was really interesting that she included her weightlifting journey along with her crossfit story as well. I was really shocked when I read that other weightlifting coaches were not all that supportive of her trying to go to the olympics as well as the crossfit games and that they would come up to her and make comments on how they thought that she didn’t deserve to go because she wasn’t solely focused on weightlifting.
One of my favorite things about this book is that even though there were trying times, Tia always tried to keep a positive attitude no matter what. I loved how she wrote about how she not only had to make changes physically, but mentally in order to with the crossfit games.
All in all, this is a great book to read if you are a crossfitter or if you just love motivational stories. This was probably one of the best books I have ever read and I highly recommend it for anyone.

I finished, How I Became The Fittest Woman On Earth, by Tia-Clair Toomey.
I enjoyed reading the story of Tia’s life and her lessons learned. In the beginning of this book it says that she could not have accomplished so much without help. That is a big part of this book and part of the reason I like it so well.
At some point in time, there will probably be more of a training book, but probable not before the competition is too young to keep up with. We can learn more from sharing working ideas. But giving away all your weaknesses can help others find them. I am learning balance is a big part of CrossFit. Everything goes well when the weight falls into place. When it doesn’t, we can lose balance trying to muscle it up. The body can put itself in a bad set up trying to find balance. That is why I need to work on my Split Jerk. I know if I do muscle, it up over head, my posture is so much better with my legs off set front and back. I have a lot more to learn but that is part of life and this story.
A quote from the book, How I Became The Fittest Woman On Earth, by Tia-Clair Toomey.
“With the support of my partner, Shane, my family and my coaches along the way. I was able to achieve my dream of being number one. This is the story of how I got to where I am today. I hope you enjoy it but more importantly I hope it inspires you to dream big, work hard and never give up!”

This has to be one of the worst written books ever. I wonder whether to call it a book or an interview transcript structures in paragraphs and chapters. For someone who has coaches and support on every aspect of her fitness journey I would have assumed / hoped to take the same care in support for this book, with a good ghost writer or editor.

It resembled one long flow of consciousness of Tia, describing how she get to where she is now.

And while I applaud the honesty she shows, she is not easy to like while “listening” to her thoughts. Boy, does she complain a lot. What I take away from this is that also winners of big events have so many doubts, can be so impacted by self doubt and whining, and still win.

What surprised me even more was the part where she describes how they lived together after their studies, before discovering CrossFit. Tia had no idea what to do with her life and showed no initiative at that time. Not at all. My assumption was that people who are so driven and committed to be able to win the Games, must be like that by nature in everything they overtake. Definitively not the case.

So I did take something from this description, which benefits from reading diagonally to not make it last to long.

Toomey's biographical account of her rise to the winner of the CrossFit Games is proof that environment is the crux. Growing up in Australia, she was constantly competing, constantly challenging herself in a culture that promotes physical activity.

I was interested in this book because of Toomey’s unique physical abilities. Turns out she was brought up in the best possible circumstances: lots of physical challenges, a very physical culture, with very supportive parents willing to promote more and more physical success. Environment is the crux. Especially when considering the development of physical talent. We have learned that it takes time for us to become world-class (Talent, Mastery) and that we cannot control that time development, especially when we are kids (Outliers). Still, Toomey’s competitive urge is clear and her desire to become the best shines in this quick read. I also enjoyed the appendices that she included: Macro approach to eating, dropping weight, staying motivated, goal achievement, core strength, and why it’s important to squat.

I found it inspirational. It wasn't a hard read. It was very friendly, mainly because her writing style is so simplistic. If you've watched Tia's interviews, you can definitely imagine her saying some of the things in the book. It gives a detailed and yet layman look into the CrossFit games and the world of CrossFit. (A.k.a it's not all love between competitors). If you're a fan of Tia and want to get into her head (also read more about her love story with Shane), this is the book to get. If you're looking for her (brief) point of view after watching Netflix's documentary on the 2017 CrossFit games, this is the book to get. Plus it comes with training advice at the end!
The negative: Bit too expensive. I got the ebook and it was one of the priciest ebooks I ever splurged on. Took me a while to commit. Also, extremely simplistic writing style and I spotted at least 3 grammatical issues.

Tia is an incredibly inspiring woman. I wasn’t really expecting much from this book. I simply wanted to read about her life, and that’s pretty much what you get. It is written plainly, as if it were transcribed from an interview. The language is easy to read. There isn’t much organization of thought through the book. It is arranged loosely and the story is told loosely. It is a causal read that will leave you wanting to test your own athletic abilities. At $28 it is a pricey read for such a short book, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I don’t know what kind of price tag one puts in enjoyment 😏. If you’re a fan of Tia’s, you’ll be stoked to read this. If you don’t know her and are looking for an inspirational memoir, skip it.

This was a fun and quick read. I love Tia-Clair and enjoyed reading about her journey so far. It’s amazing to see all she had done up until this point (and has sense gone in to win 3 more Crossfit Games!). I enjoyed reading about her drive and the support system she has around her! A couple things that were hard to get use to was the fact that she is Australian and they just say things a bit differently from time to time, so I had to decipher what she was saying based on context. It isn’t anything I’d doc her for since she is writing in her language and I’ve got to adjust to that. I also appreciated the tips section at the very end. This is a book I will definitely plan to reread in the future when I need that push to get demotivated.

I loved this book. It was well written and flows. After reading this book Tia became my favorite CrossFit'er. When she looses she says she lost and explains what she did wrong. In the entire book she never once gives an excuse or blames someone else or pushes the blame on circumstances. She takes full responsibility. When she wins an event or the games she rarely ever says, "I won" or this is what I did right. She says we won and explains the reasons her coach set her up in an adventagous position due to training or preparation. All of her successes she states is largely because of her coach and husband. She talks about her husband with so much kindness and respect- like no other athlete I've read about. She's fully into the team concept of her, her camp, and supporters.

The story is great. I remember 2017 was the year I just started getting into Crossfit, and the 2018 documentary, The Redeemed and the Dominant, gave me all the feels. I have been in Tia's corner ever since. So, to read how she got to the games, and Olympics, and to know how she felt and what she thought was a gift. It was fun. It definitely read like she talks in her interviews. She feels like a genuine person I'd love to just hangout with. And watching her compete in the last 5 games has been nothing short of inspiring. Her book just gave me more of that.

That being said, the writing isn't the best. Sometimes it's a little too conversational and bounces through the timeline a little too quickly. But if you're just looking for more from the GOAT, you won't be disappointed.

Without a doubt my favourite book of 2018.

I’ve watched Tia-Clair compete in Crossfit Games since 2015 and become a better athlete year after year. I adore her for her physical abilities and authenticity. This book gave me an insight into her life journey so far, from which I can certainly draw plenty of inspirations and encouragement both in my own training and in helping my children find and excel in their passions.

As a romantic at heart I also relished reading about Tia’s relationship with Shane. He is definitely a notch above any of the book boyfriends I’ve ever come across in any of my fictional romance novels. Best partnership ever.

A nice, quick read, Toomey writes her memoir in a very accessible manner. Another review mentioned it was like a chat with a friend and I would agree with this assessment. I’ve never done CrossFit but I’ve become obsessed with the documentaries and following the different athletes, and it was really enjoyable to read her thoughts behind the footage (for example, her shift in mindset between the 2016 games when she was almost pessimistic about her chances of winning and 2017). Putting into perspective that she is only 25, I’m impressed she found balance between having enough material to write about and not providing so much detail that it became pedantic.

What an inspiring athlete!! Tia shows that not only do you need to put in the effort day in and day out, you need to believe in yourself! People attain greatness because of the effort that they put into what they want! We aren't just born with the ability to lift super heavy or run super fast. Some do have the talent for these things but even they need to work at it or they can loose that talent. Tia is one of my favorite cross fit athletes and I loved reading this!! Now to bring out my inner Tia!!

This was an enjoyable read and I do recommend it for CrossFit fans. Especially fans of Tia. There are quite a few great quotes as they pertain to not giving up and continuing to keep your head up and maintain hope in the face of adversity. I also enjoyed the sections in the back that pertained to general fitness. Her book did feel a bit rushed. I was surprised at how fast I finished it. In spite of its short duration, and seemingly gloss over her CrossFit games wins, I still enjoyed this read.
