Very readable and engaging biography of Nell Gwynne, actress and mistress of Charles II. It's the kind of bio nobody writes anymore, because nowadays biographers want to make sure you know how much research they've done, so they put every last scrap of it in their 800 page door-stoppers.
The only problem: Bax devotes the last chapter to an astrological study of Nell Gwynne, showing how her stars influenced her life. Which was a little weird, coming at the end of an otherwise conventional biography.
