3.5 Twinkling Stars for The Space Between

"There's a lot more going on out there than what our eyes see."

Renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield comes home from a NASA presentation to find her husband Ben missing. Initially Sarah is under suspicion as she was seen in a compromising position during the time Ben went missing. The Mayfield's marriage was going through a "rough patch" and upon her husband's death Sarah stands to inherit millions from his well off family's fortune.

Things escalate quickly when a potential business associate of Ben's is found murdered and he is now their prime suspect. The cameras in their home have been wiped, Ben's business partners are alleging that he was actually the one that stole money from them and not the other way around as he initially alleged, a gun shows up in their dresser drawer and suddenly a million dollars have been mysteriously wired into a relatively unused account. What is going on? Sarah has no idea and she has so many unanswered questions. None of the potential answers look good for Ben's innocence. Sarah's world is turned upside down - is her husband in danger or is he the dangerous one? How well does she really know the man she has been married to for the last 15 years.

Sometimes we really can't know the people we love."

While I was honestly engaged in this web of deceit, turning page after page. I was also troubled by a big aspect of it that I simply couldn't move past as the reader. I know this premise has been done before - unsuspecting women who live with a monster and are unknowingly deceived. I've read books where that was the premise & absolutely loved it (like Stillhouse Lake - I bought everything about it). Yet, I honestly never believed Ben was a monster in this book. Sarah's flashbacks were of a genuinely good guy and one that honestly loved her. The moments she thought about were touching and heartfelt. There was even mention from the reporter that everyone she interviewed loved Ben and spoke well of him. Why then was Sarah so quick to believe he could be possible of something so heinous as murder? Since I could never justifiably make that leap the whole premise of the book weighed on me.

I understand that Sarah was insecure in their relationship because Ben was supposed to be handsome and came from family money. Apparently, we were supposed to think he was therefore "out of her league". It was brought up quite a few times within the story to remind us (too many times if you ask me). I just found her insecurities to be whiny and unwarranted. Ben never gave her any actual reason to feel insecure. Her sister was quick to "villainize" him because he had money and was handsome. Therefore, he couldn't be suitable for Sarah. Why the heck not? I just couldn't make that leap. That aspect of the story bothered me quite a bit and it remained, persistently nagging the back of my mind as I read.

Honestly, Ben was actually my favorite character & he wasn't even in the book that much. I don't think this was the author's intention at all. Alas, we can't control our feelings on these types of things can we? As for the actual mystery - I had it figured out early on. I was actually unimpressed with how long it took Sarah to figure it out! She spent 75% of the book too "blinded" by supposed facts being thrown at her to actually figure out what was going on with Ben. She was supposed to be an intelligent scientist after all. I just felt like their relationship deserved a little more trust from her, despite the farfetched circumstances.

"I wonder if I've been accepting the facts of Ben's disappearance but ignoring what might be beyond them. I've failed to search for answers my eyes cannot see. The facts, like the stars we can see, command our attention with their bright lights. They also blind us to what else might be there."

Overall, this was an entertaining read. I really enjoyed the astronomy aspects that were woven in which surprised me. I learned a few new terms - win! The story started out strong but the middle definitely dragged for me. Unfortunately, I also found the plot to be a bit too predictable. Maybe I just couldn't throw myself wholeheartedly into it with the nagging thoughts in the back of my mind?

Most things are not as they appear.
What a good old-fashioned mystery! This is low on psychological thrills but the suspense is there even if it’s not nail-biting. There’s plenty here to keep you turning the pages and guessing the outcome.

After returning from a business trip, Sarah finds her husband missing and what unfolds is a twisting tale of marriage, business, and murder (not all necessarily connected).

Meserve’s excelled at writing a compelling mystery with engaging characters. It flowed easily and I hated every time I had to put my book down to concentrate on real life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

The Space Between by Dete Meserve grabbed my attention immediately and held it throughout the entire book all the way to the {somewhat} shocking ending.

The Space Between focuses on the story of Sarah Mayfield who works for the Carnegie Institute of Technology and lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband Ben and son Zack. She has just returned home from DC after a 3 day presentation to NASA only to find out that Ben has mysteriously disappeared. The rest of the novel is a continuous amount of startling discoveries and a police investigation on where Ben, a successful restaurant owner, has disappeared to.

That is just the bare bones of the story, but I think it is enough to get you going. I went into the book blind not really knowing what was going on and I'm glad I did. I didn't consider Sarah an unreliable narrator even though there is suspicion cast on her from the police. However, sometimes I did wonder a little at her choices (especially considering how smart she must be). The chapters moved at a quick pace, and they continued to get shorter as the book went on, especially toward the end. It ended up being a very quick read, and I thought the pacing was fast enough to make it hard to put down.

The book is a bit repetitive in a few spots, but nothing that really bothered me too much. I was a little shocked at the ending, but not overly. I did have my suspicions and most of them were right. Even though that was the case, the pace and excitement of the book kept me reading anyway.

There is also a tiny dose of romance in The Space Between but nothing crazy. This is not a book with love scenes, just some affection that didn't bother me in the slightest.

I loved the astronomy aspect to this book, it was something different from what I have read in other novels. I love when the female characters have an actual career, and reading about space was very interesting for me. I love that the author applied something she knows about to the novel, I really enjoy when an author does that. And of course, I thought the cover fit into the story beautifully - such a gorgeous cover! I would probably buy this book just based on the cover alone because that is the type of person I am.

Final Thought: This book might not amaze anyone, but I think it was a super fun, fast-paced read. I also consider it to be on the lighter side, even though the subject matters are a bit on the heavier side. Meserve's writing just made everything come together nicely and in a way I think was fitting for the book. No big surprises, but if you don't think too much about it you might just be surprised. ;)

Renowned scientist Sarah Mayfield has been away for several day presenting a major breakthrough about Earth’s Trojan Asteroid to the audience at NASA headquarters. When she returns home though she finds her husband Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, is missing. Initially she thinks he is just in a bit of a snit since they had words before she left. But then other incidents, including a video security system wiped clean and a loaded Glock in the bedroom drawer, convince her there is more going on. Could it have to do with the court case Ben is involved in? And why did Ben tell their 14 year old son Zack, to keep the doors locked and set the alarm? Is there more going on than she ever dreamt? How is Ben involved? Could he have had anything to do with the murdered bodies found? Or is he the one in danger? After 15 years of marriage Sarah thought she knew her husband so well. He always seemed such a good guy. Now she is beginning to wonder. Sarah is determined to find the truth. Is Ben even still alive? And who can she trust?
The story moves at a good pace and maintains the tension throughout. I liked the way memories of the past are interspersed into the story and show something of Ben and Sarah’s marriage and their interests before things started to change. The inclusion of all the information about stars and constellations etc. was interesting. It never bogs the plot down but just adds to the story. I found this quite an intriguing read. A few times it did seem that things got a little repetitive. But all in all I enjoyed this story. Just something a little bit different. As for the cover! It fits it perfectly.
A mystery, murder, unanswered questions, and a real romance that unfolds leaving a marriage that is going through a rough patch, this book has a lot to recommend it. What’s even better, it manages the whole plot without the need to resort to crude language. An informative, enjoyable and an interesting read. Glad I bought this one. My first book by this author I would be interested to read another. Meanwhile I have passed this over to my husband to read as I think he will enjoy it too.

Netgalley provided a copy of The Space Between in exchange for an honest review.

3.5

The Space Between is a briskly-paced mystery about a missing husband and the secrets he left behind. Astronomer Sarah Mayfield is on her way home to L.A. after delivering the most important presentation of her life on the discovery of an asteroid in Earth’s orbit. Still on a high from her presentation and her extraordinary find, Sarah returns home and quickly realizes that something is amiss. Her teenage son is home but her husband, Ben, is nowhere to be found and he is not answering her calls or texts. Things get even more strange when she finds a gun in the nightstand and then discovers that their security system’s recordings have been intentionally deleted. The only file she can recover is brief clip of her husband letting a woman named Simone into their house. Of course, Sarah’s mind goes to the possibility that her husband having an affair.

The next morning, there is still no Ben.

Did he run off with this woman or is there something even more sinister going on? Ben was in the middle of a lawsuit with former partners that he accused of stealing millions from his restaurant. The trial date had just been moved up and now Ben has mysteriously disappeared. Or, is there a third possibility connected to something that happened in New York? Sarah is left scared for her husband’s safety but also disturbed by the things he has apparently been hiding from her. Despite all that, she just wants to find Ben.

Unfortunately, I didn’t warm up to Sarah. I felt she was cold and a bit arrogant. And, some of her actions are questionable as she is considered a suspect in her husband’s disappearance. We learn about Ben in Sarah’s flashbacks and he comes across as a decent man. He doesn’t seem likely to be part of what is coming to light but who knows what some people will do when pushed too far?

The Space Between is a quick read with an interesting astronomy aspect. While it didn’t knock my socks off, it was enjoyable and well-written with several twists. I raced through it because I had to know what the heck happened to Ben. I’d recommend The Space Between to mystery lovers who not only like a whodunit but also the unraveling of a “what was done.” Also, it is a pretty clean story without shock value gore or gratuitous violence, which are huge pluses in my book. I’d definitely read more by Meserve.

My Review of “The Space Between” by Dete Meserve Lake Union Publishing July 24. 2018

“The Space Between” by Dete Meserve is an intense, intriguing, captivating and stirring story. The Genres for this story are Fiction, Mystery and Suspense. The timeline is in the present and goes to the past only when it pertains to the characters or events.

The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Sarah Mayfield is a renowned astronomer, who is presenting her theories of a major breakthrough at a conference. When Sarah arrives back home to her husband Ben and son Zeke, she finds disturbing evidence, that Ben has disappeared. The Christmas tree is up earlier than usual, and there is a present under the tree but she has no idea where Ben has gone.

When Sarah and Ben first met, they were enchanted by the stars and the constellations. They would write messages to one another in code. In the fifteen years that they are married, things have changed. Sarah feels that the marriage is in trouble. As Sarah searches for Ben and the meaning of his disappearance, deep secrets, and information that she never knew about her husband surfaces.

Suddenly there are twists and turns. Ben’s driver is found dead. There are other people found dead. There are threatening lawsuits, charges of embezzlement and murder. Different people could be suspect. As the FBI becomes involved, even Sarah is a suspect. When Sarah looks through her telescopes, she often has to look in the space between to see if she is missing something. Now Sarah realizes before it is too late, that she has to start to look in the spaces in between.

This is a fast paced story, with twists and turns, and some intense moments. What exactly is the truth? Who is the murderer, and why is this happening? I received this ARC for my honest review. I would highly recommend this action packed novel for those that enjoy the genres of Mystery and Suspense.

The Space Between is a feel good mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Space Between follows Sarah after she’s made a career changing scientific breakthrough. Upon returning home, she finds her husband is missing thus beginning a thrilling mystery.

Meserve does a fantastic job of capturing the readers’ attention immediately and maintains it throughout the entire novel. My eyes were glued to the pages because I couldn’t get enough of Sarah and her investigation. The Space Between isn’t just a mystery; it’s also a story of lost and rekindled love. Throughout the novel, readers are given a peak behind the curtain of Sarah and Ben’s relationship. This frames most of Sarah’s desperate search and self-reflection.

What I enjoyed most about this novel was Meserve’s ability to make we question whether or not I could trust Sarah. The reader is given information piece by piece as it pertains to Sarah’s quest to find her husband.

The Space Between is an incredibly fast paced novel until the end. From the first few pages until the last 10% of the novel, I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough. Unfortunately, the conclusion to the mystery is incredibly rushed. Everything falls into place and the story is concluded.

Overall, The Space Between was a surprisingly great read. It’s a feel good mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Space Between by Dete Meserve is an outstanding, out-of-this-world work of art! This book starts off with a bang and never slows down. Main character, Sarah, is an astronomer who returns home from a conference to find that her husband is missing and that security system footage of their home has been erased. Working with a colleague, she is able to recover snippets of footage that lead her to wonder just what kind of dealings her husband was involved in. This book will keep the reader guessing as to each character’s motivation and intentions. This one is not to be missed!

I have to thank #NetGalley, #Lake Union and #Dete Meserve for this awesome book.

It had me from the title. I’ve always loved everything about space, the atmosphere, the whole thing. It’s the most fascinating thing ever to me. Like the oceans, it goes on and on forever. Not beginning and no ending and we are but one tiny dot. That is just awesome to me.

Sarah and Ben are a typica couple. Married a long time and have a son. They drifted apart in so many ways but can they find their way back to each other. Ben is missing and Sarah has no idea where he is or what he has done. She was gone when Ben went missing and now she is second guessing herself and him. What can you do when the person you loved and trusted more than anyone in the world becomes a stranger. Do you trust them or try to figure out who they are? Will things ever get back to normal. Will Sarah ever know what happened. Will Ben be ok? So many questions. So little time to figure it out.

Can Sarah and Ben find a way to get their lives back on track or is it to late. Will Ben be ok? This was a very good book from start to finish. A true love story with so much suspense, betrayal, lies and deceit involved.

Two of my favorite lines in this story are: “If we’re going to understand what happened to your day, we have to look beyond what we can see,” I say, “and search in the space between.”
That line is what gave me the reason for the title of this book. I loved it..
The human heart is not so easily understood. Sometimes what we’re seeking is right in front of us, even if we can’t see it. Sometimes we have to look beyond what’s concrete and measurable and trust in what’s unknowable.
I loved that line also. It sums up what can happen if you take things for granted in your life, relationships and friendships.

I loved this book and gave it a big 5 star rating. It was so good and the first book I have read by this wonderful author. I can’t wait to read more.

From the first page of the book, I felt like I had a super- secret novel that only I had and cozied up for what I knew was going to be quite a ride. I was right!!
“Thriller-mystery--suspense-who done it” page turning brilliant story of Starry facts and captivating fiction with relatable, interesting characters.

Astronomer Sarah Mayfield is the perfect heroine in this story of a broken marriage, disturbing discoveries, deceit, lies, and love and also the deep love she and husband Ben have for their teenage son. The twists and turns and goings-on of all parties are suspect and it kept me mesmerized throughout.

What we see, or don’t see, even in the face of strong evidence will keep you pondering and beautifully entertained. I did not figure out the who done it and that goes to show the brilliance and talent of this author who brings awesome astronomical facts, research, love for family and a serious thrilling ride until the very last page that will keep you up until the late hours when the stars come out. This book will make you want to go out and star gaze and wonder how big and vast life and the universe really is…

I went back and read many quotes of the uniquely brilliant writing. It will be enjoyable to many readers of several genres (mystery, domestic thriller, women’s fiction, marriage thriller with a touch of romance) I gave this book 5 big, bright stars and have put it on my best of 2018 and give it my highest recommendation.

I don’t usually binge read, but found myself having to reprimand myself, to not neglect other responsibilities, and tear myself away . The Space Between by Dete Meserve is a wonderful book, from start to finish. A gripping mystery, that had me trying to put the pieces together. But the beauty of the accompanying story of Sarah’s astronomy background, how it grounded her and the panic that she felt, unbelieving that her husband Ben could be dead or was a murderer. It allowed her to process events in a clinical way, showing much more stability than the investigators in the case. It also shared with the reader, the mystery and beauty of the unknown, that is our universe.
I enjoyed the various players, Zach the typical kid, Aaron, her computer genius co worker, her bossy sister Rachael, Kate the TV reporter, who all contributed to the weave of the story.
It’s probably the best mystery that I have read for awhile, had me turning pages into the wee hours. My thanks to Net Galley, Lake Union Publishers, for the opportunity to review this wonderful novel. I hope my review reflects how much I enjoyed it.

The Space Between is an amazing book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. This is a story about Sarah Mayfield, her husband Ben, and their son Zack. Sarah is a well known astronomer who comes home from presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a spellbound audience across the country, to realize her husband is missing. Her son Zack saw him last and Ben’s last words were, lock the doors and set the alarm. Sarah begins investigating what has happened to her husband, in doing so she must face the facts that their marriage was crumbling and did she really know her husband as well as she thinks she did. There seems to be a lot of secrets she didn’t know about. This book is not your average fiction novel, it is full of mystery and suspense. Each chapter takes you deeper into the lives of the characters. It was a beautiful love story with a very suspenseful plot woven through it. I couldn’t wait to learn more with each new page. I love Dete’s writing style and completely enjoyed Good Sam, but she continues to surprise and surpass with each new book. I highly recommended this book and give it 5+ stars 🌟 Dete Meserve you are awesome as always!

A suspenseful, sitting on the edge of your seat is definitely how I would describe this wonderful book about a woman who comes home from a business trip only to find her husband missing. With the discussion of divorce before she left on her trip, did her husband decide to leave on his own or was there something much deeper going on? I was hanging on to every page up til the last page! I highly recommend this book! This is my first book by this author, but it definitely won't be my last!!!

By far the best book I’ve read in a long time and if you look at my profile I’ve read a lot of good ones lately. This book sucked me in immediately and while yes some turns were slightly predictable, and I figured out the whodunnit, it didn’t matter. I wanted to keep reading. I was worried for and rooting for Sarah all throughout. Closing the book just now felt like saying goodbye to a friend and wishing them well. I will definitely be looking into more books by Dete Meserve and kinda hope she brings Sarah back to visit one day or maybe I’ll visit her again in The Space Between.

An intensely suspenseful and fast-paced story from the opening page, The Space Between is a race against a ticking clock. Her husband is gone, having left behind a host of near inscrutable clues and somewhere among them she'll find the truth. But will she be in time? The mysteries of the universe that form a backdrop for this domestic thriller are effortlessly and intriguingly woven in with the more human mysteries that surround the human heart.

I've read all of Dete's books and I've loved them all. This one blew me away, on so many levels. As I was reading The Space Between, I had no idea where or how the story was going to end. I went back and forth, not knowing what to believe. What a page turner!

The main character, Sarah, is a very strong person, a scientist who questions everything. She's not one to just accept those things that appear to be fact but questions everything she hears and learns. When she comes home and discovers her husband is missing and could be in danger—or could possibly be a danger to others—she keeps digging for the facts to find out the truth. She has such faith in her husband and doesn't want to doubt him but all the evidence is not in his favor. I had a hard time believing in him myself, but I wanted to trust her feelings. What an amazing women she is!

I also loved the knowledge I gained about space, NASA, and the constellations from the story within the story. Sarah is a renowned scientist who recently made a major scientific breakthrough. We learn so much about all of that and all about the possibilities that are still to be discovered in space. There is some serious information there and it was all fascinating!

The Space Between is definitely a book I'll highly recommend. I guarantee you'll not be able to put it down!!

THE SPACE BETWEEN by Dete Meserve is fast-paced, suspenseful story with lots of twists and turns that kept me riveted from beginning to end. Astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home from a career-defining business trip to find that her husband Ben appears to be missing. Nothing seems to add up as she and son Zack try to piece together the disturbing evidence being revealed as the investigation into his disappearance proceeds. As with her scientific endeavors, Sarah realizes that things may not be as they seem and she must look beyond the obvious if she wants to learn what happened to Ben. She begins to question who she can really trust to help her. The vivid descriptions of the beauty and mystery of the stars and the space between them create the perfect backdrop to this intriguing story. I could not put this book down! I highly recommend THE SPACE BETWEEN and look forward to reading more from Dete Meserve. Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read an early copy.

I love the epigraph at the beginning of this book.... "Silently one by one, In the meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, The forget-me-nots of the angels. ---Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. What happens when you think you know the person you're married to but then something takes place and questions arise and doubts set in? This is a fantastic book with mystery and suspense. I was pulled into this story like a meteor into the gravity of earth and didn't want to escape. I love the character of Sarah and her determination to find out what happened to her husband, Ben. What the police and FBI were saying about him was nothing like the man she knows. He surely wouldn't have done the thing they are saying he did . She knows what the evidence right in front of her says but it's just not making sense. Sarah's logic comes from her astronomical expertise. "Most things are not as they appear." "So many of the most remarkable discoveries are made when we look past the obvious, when we find ways around being blinded by light, and when we discover new ways to see in the dark." I really appreciate the research and how Dete Meserve incorporated astrology into this story. I learned so much. I am fascinated by what's in the sky and beyond what we know so having that as an aspect in the story was great. This is a fantastic read and I highly recommend this book. It's worth 5 stars and the galaxy they're in! TY Lake Union for the opportunity to read this wonderful book and to Dete Meserve for sharing it with us!

This is a book I could not put down! I'd been in kind of a reading slump and found the story refreshing and full of interesting characters and lots of movement. A great read!

Space Between is a good choice for fans of Gone Girl.

Sarah and Ben have been married 15 years when Ben mysteriously disappears. Ben leaves behind a shiny new Glock, an erased security system and a million dollar transfer into Sarah’s bank account. Ben was scheduled to testify the following week in his lawsuit against his partners in his upscale LA eatery. Could they have abducted Ben? Or could Sarah, who admittedly has problems in her marriage, be angling for the huge insurance and inheritance payoff if Ben is found dead?

Space Between in a good, not great, mystery. There have been so many similar plotlines since Gone Girl was released, it is possible I’m just burned out on the family dynamic thriller. I spent much of my reading time wondering if Sarah had ever read or watched a thriller or police procedural before. Some of her actions are bizarre and stupid. Picking up a gun without worrying about getting your fingerprints on it? Not using your alarm or even locking your doors after your husband disappears? Lying to the police? Concealing and tampering with evidence that could be used to find your husband? It is just unbelievable that a Caltech PhD and famous astrophysicist could be this stupid. Someone less jaded than I might like Space Between so 3 stars.
