Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

ALEX Paine by C.J. PETIT

Alex Paine, is definitely one of the best that he has written to date. I truly think that every book that C.J. Petit does just makes him set a goal to do one better the next book that he writes. His characters are so very real that you live every emotion that they go through in each story that he writes. For just a few hours I get to live their lives and that affects me on every level. I keep every book that I get from this author, just so that I can relive his books again and again. BRAVO!!!! BRAVO!!!! Please keep doing what you are doing, because you are giving people great joy with your great talent.

Three and a half stars

Format: Kindle Edition

I have very mixed feelings about this book and author. I like the point of view from which he tells his stories. Good wins. Evil does not. Characters get married rather than lust in the dust prevailing. His characters use weapons beyond the western standard Colt single action and the Winchester '73. (However the Winchester '73 was not offered in .44 rimfire) Despite these and other positives there are irritating problems such as editing, sentence structure, word choices and the historical setting.

The date 1880. The author uses expressions and slang which just weren't around then. Expressions such as the really annoying "just Sayin."* He also doesn't seem to have a clear idea of just how loose the legal system was in the west at that time. His lawmen engage in legalities and worries that would not bother most real life westerners in 1880. In the real west, in El Paso, Texas, sometime lawman, sometime outlaw John Selman walked up behind John Wesley Hardin and shot him in the head. Hardin had served his prison time and was not wanted for anything. Depending upon the source you read Selman was not indicated or was freed because of a hung jury. Very few worried about the legalities. The major point of contention seems to have been whether Selman shot Hardin in the back of the head or through the eye from the front. One coroner's juror said words to the effect that if he shot from the front it was excellent shooting. If from the back, it wad excellent judgement.

There are also places where the book really drags. Particularly during the stories of the various romances and family relationships. Conversely, there is more action in Alex Paine's tenure as deputy sheriff than is likely. The amount of action and gunfights related could have been used for more than one book Mr. Petit has presented us with a mixture of exciting action and a number of skim worthy pages.

I downloaded this novel via Kindle Unlimited. As I do not have to pay extra for Mr. Petit's books, I will probably try another. If they all contain the same sort of slow passages, I can always skim. Three and a half stars so I will post four.

While all of C.J. Petit's books are poorly edited(even he admits that), and stretch credulity, this one is beyond belief. For example, the sheriff character does two things...sits in his office looking at papers, or is home sleeping. He never backs up his deputies, never sends anyone out with the title character, regardless of the danger he faces, just sits in his office looking at papers. When the main character comes back to the office once, with a bullet in his side, the sheriff tells him to go see the town doc(no shit!), but doesn't bother to send for help, or get up himself and help him get there. The main character kills dozens of people, and never changes. There is no such thing as character arc in Petit's stories.

When I'm in the mood for some light reading, I'll down-load one of his westerns, and just shake my head. But this one is ridiculous.

Hard to read

This book was hard to read, due in part to the many grammatical and punctuation errors as well as the writing style (more childish and naive than a western old time novel). I enjoyed the first novel I read by this author (Ben Gray) but had a very difficult time finishing this book. I am not sure if I will start another.

Alex Paine was raised as Henry St Martin

Henry was kicked off at the St Martin's ranch at just as he found out about his mother's death. He went to the parish priest and asked for his advice and told him what happened. For the next four and a half years he worked at different ranches helping out and earning an income. He ended up at Ryan's ranch with Patrick and Mary and their children Mattie and Sean. He was working in the barn moving hay with a pitchfork when he saw an outlaw go into the house and knew that Mary was alone with their children with no one to protect them so he broke into the door and attacked the outlaw with the Pitchfork and pinned him to the wall with it. Then he checked on the Ryan's to make sure none of them were hurt. He then drugged The outlaw to the barn and pulled the Pitchfork out went back and cleaned up the house and repaired the back door. The sheriff came out sheriff Sharp and was impressed with what Alex had done and offered him a job as deputy. The next day Alex went into town into Las Vegas New Mexico and took the job as deputy sheriff. On every day off he visited the Ryan's house with the family and spent the day there. One day Mattie told him that she loved him and he said he'd meet Her back on that porch when she turned 18 and see what she thought then as long as she promised to go to dances and socials and to meet other young men her age. She promised and they shook on it.
Many dangers and suspense and adventures face them both as they grew into young adults and into young men and women.

This is one of the moist family oriented stories I have ever had the opportunity to read. There was not a single incident that wasn't completely overwhelming. I was definitely mesmerized throughout the entire book, as the exciting stories just fell in place without any impropriety.

This was the most heartwarming stories I over had the opportunity to read, and five stars does not do justice to the Author, or the story's content.

Over the past year I have had the opportunity to read close to 200 books, if not more, and none have compared to this novel. I was touched, and somewhat overwhelmed, with Mr. C. J. Petit's expert knowledge of the era, as sell as his phenomenal descriptiveness of his selected characters.

I sincerely recommend this novel to anyone loving excitement, romance and characters that will forever steal your heart. This story was one of the most heart wrenching episode I have ever enjoyed. There is plenty of room for speculation, and I could feel the love and excitement as it consistently developed. There us love, laughter, and sadness throughout the entire novel. Yes! You may want to have a box of tissues nearby, as the some of episodes may require them.

If you have never read any books by Mr. Petit, this one will certainly be a new beginning of the old western atmosphere for you. But, really, I have never read any of this author's books that were not five stars, plus, but this is his best to date.

Good Book but needs proofreading

I enjoyed this book very much even though the grammar was terrible. The book tells the story of Alex Paine from the time he's 16 until he's in his 70's. Lots of action. The author was bad at mixing the characters names. Calling Alex, Sean or Mary, Mattie. Even one entire family the Riley's at the first of the book becomes the Ryan's a few chapters in at least they stayed the Ryan's the rest of the way through. Despite this i still give it 4 stars and will continue to read Me Petite books. I like the way he completely finished the story. But please hire a proofreader.

A New Mexico Romance and Western/A Family of Law Men and. Their Families

CJP has penned, with a few grammatical errors, which do not take away from the storyline. A young man, who is thrown out of his house after his Mother is murdered. The son becomes a lawman who is very near the best in New Mexico. The Deputy marries a childhood sweetheart and their life is very successful as they begat and multiply. This is a heart warming story of real life on the western frontier and is an excellent read for the genre.....ER

I enjoyed this western story of a young man as he grew up working as a county deputy Marshall. Gun fights are well described, as are the weapons used. Characters were well defined as both compassionate and professional depending on the case involved. The author has a great story style and keeps the readers attention and the pages turning. I have read most of C.J. Petit, e-books and continue to be entertained by each story. Each is different from the last, and have moved from a short/ Smaller story to a full length and retain the readers attention to the last page. Keep writing Mr.
Petit. 😁

A western with heart. A very readable story of a young boy of 16 who becomes a surprisingly good man and and deputy in a town that needed some law enforcement. I was rooting for the good guys all the way through. Side plots of mistreated hispanics, guns and bravery, large ranches, and power hungry families people this one. I really couldn't stop til the ending worked itself out. One of the best stories of the old untamed west that I've read. The characters, settings and tale really came to life.

FAMILY, LAWMEN, RELIGION & LOVE

5 STARS for this wonderful thrilling romantic fast paced western with true life like gun battles, descriptions of firearms for any gun lovers, all happening in the Las Vegas area. Also, the Catholic Church is described as it was during the Western Era of America along with the local priest that serviced the local Spanish speaking people of the time and the white people who came from old European countries. The love stories in this book are refreshing and made me feel good. Get one!

Loved this well written book, I extremely enjoyed reading this because Alex and Mattie love for each other was so strong till the end. It makes me cry. Although too many killings but I guess that time there’s nothing you can do about it. What I like the book is the story and the romance are simple and you just imagine what they do together instead of detailing what do when they making love to each other. Once I read this book I’m in CJ Cline book #2.

Awesome

This story was full of love for others and exciting adventure, romance and lots of shootings in trying to capture all the bad guys. Alex was a hero in capturing these bad people. Alex had been thru a lot being thrown out of his home after his mother passed on. Finding love with his grown-up sweetheart. This is an amazing story. I recommend it to those who love a good western.

C J Petit, nothing else needed!

Henry, aka Alex was a man with heart and a man of justice. As a deputy he was very good because of his passion for the innocent. At age 18 he was a man, but with little girl infatuation 12 year old Mattie caused a promise between them.... on her 18th birthday they would meet again. But oh how complicated that meeting became. This book is exciting and hard to put down.

Well, this was a never ending story of the many courageous aspects of The subjects young life. Abandoned & disowned by the man he thought was his father. He took off on his own; became an amazing. Respected lawman. Then he ended up with the girl he fell in love with early on. He inherited the family ranch & hacienda. Seeking revenge to right all the wrongs. Brought family members together. Altogether a Good Read

The total story

When Alex Paine was born, leaving Henry St. Martin behind, a great and honorable life began. Our dear author leads us through his maturation and on through his positive effects on other lives to the complete worldly end of his story.
Rarely do you find such a complete and compelling tale.

Name Change

A young man who is disowned and thrown out of his home becomes the best deputy that a sheriff could wish for. This is another great Western from Petit that has plenty of action and even includes a love story. I hope that Petit continues to write interesting stories. I highly recommend this author.

Alex Paine

I enjoyed this novel very much but found the numerous grammatical errors disconcerting. A few minor lapses are to be expected in any written work but the shear number of these in this novel took away much of my reading enjoyment. Perhaps more diligent proof reading would be in order for further works by Mr. Petit.

Alex Paine

My first book by this author. I found the storyline catching. The amount of men that he killed in the line of duty and in self defense and the defense of others was overwhelming. The love story interwoven into the book was fresh and beautiful. Alex Paine was a good man that always tried his best to do the right thing in the eyes of God.

The Paine's

I have read many of your books, but I enjoyed this one the most. This one has so very much love and compassion it was almost like a romances book. I also liked (loved) the way it ended. I can imagine Alex and Mattie in the after life. Did he know he was dying too?

Great story

The only reason I marked this 3 instead of 5 was whoever did your proofreading needs to be fired. You are following the action and suspense and then have the interruption of mistakes that takes away from the flow and interrupts the story. The story was great except for the mistakes

Live Conquers All

Wonderful story of family and what is right and what is wrong. Alex was loved by his mother when he was young. She instilled into him that what is right and what is wrong and the importance of having and loving God. Alex knew he had to help get rid of the bad guys so the good people can live in peace. He was blessed with his wife and new family.

A must have in your library.

The entire C.J. Petit collection should be in your library. Petit is in the same class as Louie L'Amour as a skilled story teller... no detail is too small, he makes you feel as though you were looking down the barrel about to take down the bad men. Petit books are nothing short of thrilling.

Another great read

Great read, very good book. Didn't find much errors. Fell in love with all the characters, except the evil ones of course. I've come to the collusion that I don't like the epilogues that go all the way until they die. These characters become my family and I like to think of them living.

Exceedingly good read

It's not often one finds a western that's little more than, let's say "brain candy" for th gung-ho shoots enthusiasts. This book far exceed my expectations, without giving away plotlines, it kept me entertained with gun fights, romance and justice. Well done, most enjoyable read.

I can't stop reading Mr. Petit's books. I finish one, then download another to my kindle reader. In the past two weeks, I've read the six-volume Evans saga plus the emotional epilog. In the last two days, I've read two more of his books. I have just downloaded another, but have to charge my Kindle and rest my tired eyes.

WHOLESOME WESTERN

This is one of those westerns where you expect something tragic is going happen at any moment, but Alex Paine always manages to come out as the hero... Against all odds, this deputy is a survivor! I listened to this book on my Kindle, while driving a long distance, and thoroughly enjoyed it. RECOMMENDED
