A great prequel/novella - short and engaging!
Run is an apt title as that's what Wallace must do, RUN! Hamdy really gets the adrenaline pumping, I'm looking forward to reading Pendulum!

As this is just a short prequel novella, as expected it doesn't offer much complexity in plot or characters, but it did fulfill its purpose of getting me sufficiently interested to want to pick up the novel it precedes.

A prequel to Pendulum, which I had previously read and enjoyed along with the second book, Freefall - the point being clearly I am slightly out of synch here! That said this is a fine introduction to John Wallace - our reluctant hero from the Pendulum trilogy (a third book is in progress I believe), detailing the events that unwittingly contributed to the initial Pendulum attack.
As a short story this worked incredibly well. My main criticism of the Pendulum and Freefall books is how incredibly fast paced they are, to an extent that I struggle to keep up and have to refer back. I do think that is a reflection on the author's background as a screenwriter and I have commented before that these books would transfer so well to the big screen. Pendulum and Freefall are both action packed, Run while still fast paced, is a short story and at only 90 pages, details one event with a fixed cast of characters making it an easier, but equally entertaining read.
I enjoyed catching up with John Wallace again and while I always recommend reading book series' in order, this wasn't a problem. The familiarity of the character and an awareness of the circumstances, albeit without the detail felt very welcoming and made me realise how much I am looking forward to the final book in this exciting trilogy!

Im Hauptbuch geht es um John Wallace, einem Journalisten, der umgebracht werden soll und vor seinem Mörder flüchtet. Wie man bereits hier lesen kann, war er in Afghanistan und hat dort ein Massaker fotografiert, dass er nicht hätte sehen dürfen. Ohne Beweise glaubt ihm allerdings keiner.

Die Vorgeschichte setzt genau hier an: Der Leser kann die Ereignisse in Afghanistan komplett miterleben. Insgesamt ist es aber eher eine längere Kurzgeschichte, was bei Prequels aber ja üblich ist.

Es war spannend, die Erlebnisse von John Wallace "aus erster Hand" mitzubekommen. Zwar hat man sich beim Lesen von "Pendulum" schon so seine Gedanken gemacht, aber das war nochmal etwas ganz anderes. Kurzweilig, aber dennoch sehr fesselnd, wird über das missglückte Manöver der britischen Armee berichtet. Außerdem wird der Leid eines unnötigen Krieges sehr gut herübergebracht.

Mit dem Hauptbuch Mithalten kann "Run" allerdings nicht. Es ist ganz nett und schon ein Muss, wenn einem "Pendulum" gefallen hat. Das sollte man vorher auch unbedingt gelesen haben, um alles gut nachvollziehen zu können. Allerdings verpasst man auch nicht so viel, wenn man die Vorgeschichte weglässt.

Insgesamt aber eine schöne Idee und sehr kurzweilig, deswegen 4 Sterne!

Nur eine Vor- und Kurzgeschichte mit einem heiklen Thema, aber dafür recht gut. Es wird nicht nur rumgerannt, sondern es gibt einige Twists und Wendungen. Auch die Charaktere sind nicht nur eindimensional. Machte mich neugierig auf die restlichen Bücher.

Readable but maybe a little "rushed"
I think a lot of license has been taken in the way the storyline runs. For me it does not seem remotely realistic and on that basis, the jury is still out on whether to read anymore by this author.
