I have lots of scraps from nearly thirty years of quilting and lately I've really been enjoying books about making quilts with small pieces of fabric. This is a good one but if you are a beginner, you might be better off with something a little more basic. If you're an intermediate quilter, you'll enjoy the clear instructions and the many ideas for scrap busting your stash.

Seen on the cover is Izzy Squared . a Granny Square block that I just love

If there is one thing quilters abound in, it is scraps, fabrics left over from projects and set aside as too precious to toss, hopefully to be utilized in a project. Someday.

Well, that day has come!

Lissa Alexander's new book Oh, Scrap! has a dozen of the yummiest projects utilizing scraps.

Awesome Land, 701.2" x 93", is made up of 6" blocks. It even has a scrappy binding.
Premier quilt historian Barbara Brackman offers a preface, Musings on the History of Scrap Quilting, which is well worth reading. Lissa addresses her background as a quilter and marketing director for Moda Fabrics before offering basics of color theory as it relates to scrap quilting.

This gorgeous Burgoyne Surrounded finishes at 75 1/2" x 93 1/2"'
"It's all about the value", Lissa says.

Lissa suggests pulling out all your favorite scraps and making a swatch card to envision how the colors go together. Or, you can use precuts.

Sherbert Stars is so beautiful. The 81 3/4" x 82 3/4" quilt is easier than it looks.

How do you store your scraps? Lissa has suggestions. I have two towers meant to store shoes, filled with my fat quarters and folded scraps, stored by color. I cut smaller scraps into various squares and store them in baggies by size. Lissa uses refrigerator bins.

Each Bock in Splendid Scraps is made of four Starting Point blocks, her contribution to
Pat Sloan's Splendid Sampler project.

These quilts will inspire you. I love the bright, clear pastels and medium colors she used.

Kismet is a Courthouse Steps version created by Melissa Corry

Indian Blanket is all about light and dark value contrast. It is constructed
with half-square triangles.

The instructions are excellent, with great color photos and drawings and alternative colorways and sizes.

Fireworks was constructed with Cake Mix triangle papers and 10" Layer Cake squares.
Are you inspired to get our your scraps? I am!

I received a free ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

“Oh, Scrap!: Fabulous Quilts That Make the Most of Your Stash” by Lissa Alexander is a wonderful book! It is for those who already have entered the world of scrap quilting as well as those who are just starting out.

There is an historical commentary at the beginning of the book by the renowned Barbara Brackman giving us the history of scrap quilts which I found quite fascinating. The next part of the book is a section on color and the terms Quilter’s need to know. Ms. Alexander breaks it all down in very easy to understand terms. No lessons about secondary or tertiary color wheels here. I will say there are no lessons for beginning Quilter’s. The book and it’s patterns assume that you have a basic knowledge of quilting.

Almost every page has a little box with hints and suggestions. I have been a quilter for over 40 years and the hints are great. There are a dozen beautiful patterns in this book. Ms. Alexander makes suggestions on how to start your scrap journey. You don’t have to have to have tons of scraps in a basket somewhere. She gives you suggestions for making scrappy quilts with jelly rolls or a few packages of 2.5 inch squares.

A few of the scrap quilts I personally wanted to make are in this book. Imagine my surprise when I found two quilts that I had saved from a magazine that are included here. The Granny Square and a scrappy Bourgogne Surrounded. There are choices for different sizes as well as different color ways.

The photographs are stellar and really give you a wonderful idea of the quilts. The graphics for each quilt are also amazing. Large, clear, concise with excellent directions. This book is a must have for all those who love scrap quilting. Lissa Alexander is definitely a wonderful, inspiring and joyous quilter. Her quilts are happy and who couldn’t use a little bit more of that!

I would like to thank Martingale Publishing, Lissa Alexander and Edelweiss for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have a lot of quilting books but I really appreciated this one. The advice for choosing volume, value, and how to combine color is solid. There are ample pictures and the swatches at the end of each pattern section are also great. I love that the author includes at least one different colorway suggestion for each section. One thing I loved about this versus similar books is that she gives you the number of final pieces from each "color" instead of "do this, now sub cut this". It's very easy to use your scrap stash using her format of "you will need 180 2.5" squares in colorway A and 180 2.5" squares in colorway B". This is also super helpful if you are using an accuquilt for your pieces. Overall I really loved this book and I'm excited to start a new project with these designs.

My favorite part of this book was the essay about scrap quilts written by quilt historian Barbara Brackman. I learned a lot about the history of quilters using scraps to make various types of quilts for the past couple of centuries.

The projects in the book are interesting and well-photographed. The author's description of techniques and the stepped-out project instructions are excellent. Her tips about color choice in fabrics was helpful.

Highly recommended!

An excellent collection of scrap fabric quilts, this quilt book has several choices I’d love to make as full quilts in the future. I especially like the Surrounded quilt pattern, a version of the Burgoyne Surrounded quilt pattern. Splendid Scraps in another pattern choice in bright, fresh colors. The book was written in 2018, but somehow I’m just getting around to reading it. It’s definitely worth buying this book by Lissa Alexander.

This book is an easy read with the interesting theme of creating scrap quilts that work design wise. Each project is an effective example of a point made. Her tips are ones that I am using or will now use. The quilt that appealed the most was Kismet a blue and green Courthouse Steps quilt set on point with a modern color plan.

Great primer on getting great looking quilts from your scrap stash. Basic squares are 2 1/2” or 4 1/2”. Great tips on choosing fabrics. I plan to make several from her suggestions from my many leftover pieces!

My favorite is the Granny Square

I loved many of the quilts and the variety of colors and prints used in each quilt. She gives snippets of advice re: color and print choices. For my favorite quilts I would be better off trying to choose the color way she used.

Beautiful quilts. Excellent introduction to color use in quilts exploring tint, shade, tone, chroma, value, scale and density. Explored making Sherbert Star and want to try Kismet but book due back at library. One to check out again!

Lissa distills years of experience into a book with beautiful quilts and the secrets behind them. She introduced me to "cake mixes" which I might try, although my quilts are pretty unscripted and imprecise! It couldn't hurt to try a cake mix though!
I enjoyed the little tid bits she included as " on, by the way".

Interesting to skim but didn't see as many scrappy quilts. Most quilts seemed to use very similar related runs of fabrics or colors as a start. Great results but I was looking for more scrappy quilts. Kismet and Splendid Scrap quilts are potentials.
