Young Marine Kenny Nielsen, from Galesburg, Illinois, finds himself and his Marine platoon en route to a small, obscure island in the South Pacific. It's an island called Guadalcanal. There this young Marine will find himself involved in one of the first great Pacific battles of World War II, a battle that began to swing the tides of war against Japan and in favor of the U.S. There this young man will tap into reserves of courage and strength he didn't know he had, as he fights, forges strong bonds of friendship, and experiences the grief of seeing close friends die. This novel is the first in a series of novel that focus on the military adventures of Kenny Nielsen.
