Blythe is strong, independent, and proud and has a huge heart. The circumstances that befall her are sad and unfortunate and she struggles to hold onto herself, her sanity, her dignity and keep herself safe while she tries her hardest to make her situation better on her own. The streets are rough and scary and even though she has been offered assistance, more than once, she is too proud to accept. She does not want to have to depend on anyone or owe something to anyone who may help her. By accident she receives a cell phone that has become her lifeline and her connection to Sawyer, who has come to mean a lot to her. And even though he worries for her, he never puts pressure on her knowing she needs to do things her own way. She is scared of what he may want from her in return if she ever accepts his offer of assistance. However, that choice is taken out of her hands after a brutal attack. Blythe’s entire world shifts overnight and she struggles to keep up with the changes, new feelings and deal with the emotional and mental trauma she has dealt with and come to terms with it all and with Sawyer’s help she is finally hopeful and looking towards the future.
Sawyer “Squirrel” is not your average alpha male. He stands out from the rest of his firefighter brothers, all being bigger, more confident and the epitome of the alpha male image; he has a slighter physique, wears glasses and thinks of himself more as a nerd. He can hold his own just as well as his friends but he does not stand out in the eyes of the female population. He is always ‘the friend’; the guy who the ladies want to help set them up with his friends…it is never him. Sawyer briefly meets Blythe in Shelter for Sophie, during the aftermath of the fire that burned down the abandoned building she and some friends were staying in. He gives her his sweatshirt, which unbeknownst to him has his cell phone in the pocket. Instead of turning it off, he buys another and begins texting his old phone hoping the woman who has it will answer one of his messages. Aside from worrying for her safety and wellbeing after the fire, he is drawn to her and desperately wants to help however he can. When a horrible incident lands her in the hospital, Sawyer decides to take charge. He wants to keep her safe and in his life but he has to work stealthily to keep her from running and convince her to finally accept his help. As their bond grows stronger, he realizes he will do whatever he has to do to keep her safe and with him for good.

This is the book we've been waiting awhile for. It was really hard not to feel sorry for Blythe and to want to help her. I loved that Squirrel was able to do just that. I liked that it started with that phone and how he didn't cut it off, but instead used it as a way to communicate with her. Then when the chance arrived he too advantage and did what he could to start to give Blythe a new chance.
Sophie's old house seems to have morphed into a sort of homeless halfway house, a very good thing. In that house Blythe found safety for the first time in a long time, she also found friends who only wanted friendship and the love of a good guy. All of this was so much fun to watch Blythe realize she could move past where she was, that people where there to support her in getting back on her feet.
This is a Stoker book, so you knew there would be drama, it was a bit crazy, but the good guys prevailed. I liked that at the end Blythe found so much more with her new life.

When we are at our lowest we show how truly strong we are. At least that is the case with Blythe Coopman. Though circumstances have left her homeless Blythe hasn’t given up and still has compassion for others. A chance meeting with a hot bespeckled fireman has given her something to cling to. When Blythe is attacked Sawyer and friends say no more and get her off the streets and into Sophia’s home. Between Sawyer’s self-esteem issues and Blythe’s past I wanted to slap them each upside their heads on more than one occasion. But they are a great couple and I loved their story.

I listened to the Audiobook because I couldn’t wait for this book to release! This is such an amazingly uplifting story! I had a feeling this was going to be a favorite of mine having met Blythe in an earlier book. Susan is such a fantastic storyteller and Blythe and Sawyer (Squirrel) are wonderful characters. There was no way to not fall in love with Sawyer. It’s very rare to find a hero who has self esteem issues and this made him all the more lovable and real. Add to that the fact that he is so selfless and sweet and would do anything for the people he loves and you have a most swoon worthy hero!! Blythe has been through hell. A tragic event in her life rendered her homeless and she had been on the streets for a year. Thankfully the first time Sawyer met Blythe at a fire he had been called to, he gave her his sweatshirt but hadn’t realized his phone was in it. This would turn out to be the lifeline she needed and a way for them to keep in touch as well as the way he would eventually be able to see her again. He had not been able to forget her.
All the wonderful men and women we have come to know in this series make appearances in this heartwarming and awesome comeback story. You will love Blythe and Sawyer and how she fits in with everyone else too. They are perfect together!!! The epilogue is beautiful!
Erin Mallon is such a great narrator and I just love how she brings the characters to life! I love listening to the books she narrates especially if they are written by Susan Stoker!!!
I am really looking forward to the next book that is set up for us at the very end of this one.

Another brilliant all-feels story from Susan Stoker.
I love an emotional read and Shelter for Blythe hit so many emotions, you just can not read it without being effected in some way, it tugs at your heartstrings, makes you cry, makes you angry and makes you want a guy like Squirrel in your life.
What I loved most about this story was the way Blythe and Sawyer bolstered each other when they needed it, they were very much in sync from the beginning, I also LOVE Sawyers family lol talk about you take the man you get the whole kit and kaboodle they were just amazingly overwhelming but in such a lovely way, the same goes for Sawyers firefighting family you take one you take all it's their own community and it's just awesome once your head stops exploding from being overwhelmed I can imagine it's nice to feel so loved and protected by so many.

Waiting months and months for this story, and it was worth the wait. Then again, any story written by Susan Stoker usually is. Read this book in two sittings, meaning I was invested, intrigued and engaged from start to finish.
I loved Sawyer and Blythe together. Once again Ms. Stoker created less than perfect characters, with fears, and hang ups that makes it easy to relate with. In this case, a homeless woman and a firefighter. This is not about a hero complex that leads into romance, no. It's about two people brought together by understanding and chemistry. A story that lets any audience know, "this could be you." That's what made this story so much better.
I started reading books by this author back in late 2017, thus far everything I've read I've lived and devoured. This is no exception. Highly recommend this heartfelt romance story.

Loving the homeless
I loved this book. As always Susan Stoker delivers an interesting story with strong characters and bringing homelessness to the for front of another great read. Highly recommended.

Shelter for Blythe is book 11 in the series but its a stand alone. However, we meet Blythe in Sophie's book. Blythe was homeless and living on the street near Sophie's place of employment. Blythe also plays a role in Milena's book; in a way, Blythe is helping the villain of Milena's book. Now, however, Blythe needs help. She is attacked on the streets. Squirrel, aka Sawyer, gave Blythe his phone months ago and they begin a few text conversations. This leads to a budding friendship that changes Blythe's life.
Sawyer is not like the other heroes from this series. He isn't a muscular, isn't as tall, isn't as 'manly' in his eyes. He is a bit self deprecating which was a bit odd. I'm not sure it was bad or good. Just different. Blythe's backstory is sad and fairly typically of many people who find themselves homeless. I thought Sawyer and Blythe were a good match for each other but overall, I felt the story was kind of flat. There isn't much danger or action; the plot mainly revolves around the relationship between Sawyer and Blythe. It wasn't bad, but it was a bit anticlimactic.
Bottom line: I liked the story and was glad to finally get more info about Blythe, but overall it was a little slow.

All. The. Feels.
Not that I expected any less, I really didn’t, but Blythe and Sawyer seemed to make my heart swoon and break so many times throughout this book that I lost count, and that doesn’t even take into account the rest of the BoHTH crew and how they all rally in this one. This book was pretty much everything.
I adored both Blythe and Sawyer aka Squirrel. Blythe is strong, intelligent and despite all that she has gone through still has a heart of gold. After finding out all that she had been through I couldn’t help but admire the woman and loved watching as she worked through a whole myriad of issues to get back on her feet and take her future by the horns. Sawyer was all kinds of nummyness. He’s got that alpha AF thing going on and yet is man enough to know when to step to the side and not dictate on how one should do things, even when it drives him batshit crazy. He also has a few...insecurities that made it all at once easy to connect with him, even as I wanted to Gibbs smack some sense into him.
Blythe and Sawyer’s journey started out in a unique way and I loved how it turned into a friendship, even if it wasn’t done in a conventional way ~ though to be honest, in this day and age it isn’t really all that unconventional. But once they finally have the opportunity to actually be physically around each other things really take off and I loved watching as they met each obstacle and worked through them together, even if that ‘togetherness’ was simply standing by the other and letting them know they’d be there to help if it was needed. They saw beyond the physical, beyond their circumstances, and all the way to who the other truly was and it made it blatantly obvious how well they fit together in every way, and I mean every because the smexy was 5 alarm fire HAWT!
This was simply another great addition to Ms. SToker’s already get list of books. She does tackle a few issues that impact our society today, and as she does in all her books, handles it with care and respect. And as for the rest of the BoHTH crew, I loved how they rallied in this one. I have stated this before, I haven’t read all the books in this particular series (and you don’t have to in order to enjoy this book ~ it can be read as a standalone), but I really like all of them, even if I can’t always keep who’s who straight, and really liked all that they brought to the table in helping Blythe and Sawyer. And as for that epilogue...I cannot wait for Justice for Hope!

Homeless Blythe is so far down on her luck, she has no luck at all, until she keeps the borrowed sweatshirt of firefighter "Squirrel" McClay and ends up with his phone. He's her lifeline to reality and sanity. But Blythe's goodness has made enemies out of some local street toughs, and when she's attacked, Squirrel steps in to offer her shelter.
This is a cute romance. It's very sweet, with everyone (even Squirrel's family), rallying around Blythe, just because Squirrel likes her. In reality, if your child brought a homeless person to live with them, you'd probably be terrified they'd rob him -- or worse, but Squirrel's mom offers Blythe a place to stay if things don't work out with her son.
It's a kind of romantic fantasy, but the book is entertaining and well written.

5 Heartfelt, Heart-Warming Stars!!!
I was given this book in turn for an honest review.
When Blythe finds herself in the ER, Sawyer swears to help her, and he won’t take no for an answer. Just when Blythe thought her past was long behind her, it reappears with a vengeance.
I’d been looking forward to Blythe and Sawyer’s story. Both their characters had intrigued me in the other books in the Badge of Honor’s series, and Susan Stoker did not disappoint. I love that both these characters were drawn together in the unlikely of circumstances, and the way in which they connected with each other.
Considering the hell Blythe had been through, she always put the well being of others before her own and she was always willing to help others. She never shied away from helping, even when it meant putting her needs and safety before others.
Sawyer wasn’t your typical Susan Stoker hero, he was different in all the right ways. He was perfect in my eyes. He had all the qualities of a great man, and I cared not for how he was built, if anything the difference in his build to his fellow colleagues and friends, is what drew me to him that little more.
Shelter for Blythe isn’t so much an action romance as many of Susan Stokers stories are, however, it is a romance story that tugs at the heart. Giving us the reader a different aspect of life. Not everyone living homeless got there because their actions were untoward, some had the worst luck and found that those they believed to be friends, weren’t there when they needed them most.
Although this story can be read as a standalone, to get the full enjoyment of this story, I recommend reading the Badge of Honor series in order, starting with Justice for Mackenzie.

When Blythe finds herself in the ER, Sawyer swears to help her, and he won’t take no for an answer. Just when Blythe thought her past was long behind her, it reappears with a vengeance.
I’d been looking forward to Blythe and Sawyer’s story. Both their characters had intrigued me in the other books in the Badge of Honor’s series, and Susan Stoker did not disappoint. I love that both these characters were drawn together in the unlikely of circumstances, and the way in which they connected with each other.
Considering the hell Blythe had been through, she always put the well being of others before her own and she was always willing to help others. She never shied away from helping, even when it meant putting her needs and safety before others.
Sawyer wasn’t your typical Susan Stoker hero, he was different in all the right ways. He was perfect in my eyes. He had all the qualities of a great man, and I cared not for how he was built, if anything the difference in his build to his fellow colleagues and friends, is what drew me to him that little more.
Shelter for Blythe isn’t so much an action romance as many of Susan Stokers stories are, however, it is a romance story that tugs at the heart. Giving us the reader a different aspect of life. Not everyone living homeless got there because their actions were untoward, some had the worst luck and found that those they believed to be friends, weren’t there when they needed them most.
Although this story can be read as a standalone, to get the full enjoyment of this story, I recommend reading the Badge of Honor series in order, starting with Justice for Mackenzie.

Great read!
As with every book in this series it is a hit. Love the characters and how they work together and overcome great obstacles. No matter what comes our way in life we all suffer loss and hardship how we work the problem and let it shape us is the real story. Love it and would greatly recommend it

A read you dont want to miss
Sawyer and Blythe story pulls so hard on yiur heart strings. Emotion with each page a journey with suspense and drama. We met Blythe briefly in several previous books. Still homeless, Blythe is determined to help her friends, but when she is attacked in an alley and taken to the ER, Sawyer is hell bent on helping her get back on her feet. I enjoyed the phone calls & texts between these two delightful characters. This is another great book in this fantastic series.

Learning about Blythe’s experience being homeless was insightful. Sawyer “Squirrel”’s insecurities got a bit old. But the insecurities of many characters in this series get old, so that’s not new. The donkey coming over to another person’s house and not being house trained was disturbing. Oh my. But overall, the book was a good read. I read the ebook. 4/5

Susan Stoker is a fabulous author and I have yet to read a book by her that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are always likeable and relatable and the storyline is always plausible and one you could easily see playing out for yourself or someone you know in everyday circumstances. I like the fact that there is no tearing down or tearing apart of the characters and basic story. Yes, the characters always have situations or circumstances to overcome either emotionally, physically, and/or mentally but they are never broken down to nothing, demeaned or persecuted in order to make a good read. She creates strong, solid characters and storylines that draw you in and keep you interested in their plight. And she does an amazing job of spotlighting everyday circumstances and struggles that we or others we know may face (homelessness, body weight, bullying, self-esteem, behaviors, etc.) and handles them with compassion and understanding. This current book, Shelter for Blythe is no different.
Blythe is strong, independent, and proud and has a huge heart. The circumstances that befall her are sad and unfortunate and she struggles to hold onto herself, her sanity, her dignity and keep herself safe while she tries her hardest to make her situation better on her own. The streets are rough and scary and even though she has been offered assistance, more than once, she is too proud to accept. She does not want to have to depend on anyone or owe something to anyone who may help her. By accident she receives a cell phone that has become her lifeline and her connection to Sawyer, who has come to mean a lot to her. And even though he worries for her, he never puts pressure on her knowing she needs to do things her own way. She is scared of what he may want from her in return if she ever accepts his offer of assistance. However, that choice is taken out of her hands after a brutal attack. Blythe’s entire world shifts overnight and she struggles to keep up with the changes, new feelings and deal with the emotional and mental trauma she has dealt with and come to terms with it all and with Sawyer’s help she is finally hopeful and looking towards the future.
Sawyer “Squirrel” is not your average alpha male. He stands out from the rest of his firefighter brothers, all being bigger, more confident and the epitome of the alpha male image; he has a slighter physique, wears glasses and thinks of himself more as a nerd. He can hold his own just as well as his friends but he does not stand out in the eyes of the female population. He is always ‘the friend’; the guy who the ladies want to help set them up with his friends…it is never him. Sawyer briefly meets Blythe in Shelter for Sophie, during the aftermath of the fire that burned down the abandoned building she and some friends were staying in. He gives her his sweatshirt, which unbeknownst to him has his cell phone in the pocket. Instead of turning it off, he buys another and begins texting his old phone hoping the woman who has it will answer one of his messages. Aside from worrying for her safety and wellbeing after the fire, he is drawn to her and desperately wants to help however he can. When a horrible incident lands her in the hospital, Sawyer decides to take charge. He wants to keep her safe and in his life but he has to work stealthily to keep her from running and convince her to finally accept his help. As their bond grows stronger, he realizes he will do whatever he has to do to keep her safe and with him for good.
This is a true feel good, sweet read with genuine characters and a solid storyline. The situations addressed in the book are real issues in today’s society and Stoker handles them wonderfully with care and respect. I really enjoyed reading Shelter for Blythe and I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Yay! We finally get Blythe’s story and get a deeper look at Squirrel. Blythe has been one of those characters that drifted in and out of the other books in this series. A homeless woman who didn’t seem like she should be on the streets. During a call, Squirrel lent her his sweatshirt and then disappeared. Not only with the sweatshirt but with his cellphone as well. This one event would change their lives forever. Through this phone, they would build a relationship that would turn into something more.
Squirrel made Blythe feel worthy of help and a life off the street. She gave him something more to look forward to then the next call. She gave him a bigger purpose. Man, I loved their story. Alpha all over the place and a strong woman to stand by his side.

Dnf at 40%
1) Too instant love. We have been told MMC and FMC texting each other and having a kinda friendship for months. And we have been told MMC is fond of the homeless FMC. It seems the author decided to tell us they have a "connection" rather than show us how they built up their relationship.
2) On the night of FMC was brutally attacked and nearly raped by some thugs, MMC as a professional paramedic decided that sneaked to her bathroom while she was having the shower of her life was a good idea. And, didn't hesitate to tell her he had a boner because he'd never lie to her with anything. Arghhh. It's wrong on so many levels.
3）Friendship and brotherhood are over the top saccharine.
Maybe Susan Stoker's books are not for me. It's the third book I had dnf-ed in the past 6 months.

Sawyer "Squirrel" Maclay has been fascinated by Blythe Coopman since their brief encounter at a fire. Discovering he'd accidentally given her his phone gives him the perfect excuse to make and keep a connection with her. If nothing else he'll be her friend although he'd like to be so much more. Blythe, like so many others, finds herself homeless because of circumstances beyond her control. Learning to live on the streets has been a powerful life lesson and even though she wants to lift herself out of what seems a hopeless situation, her choices are practically nil. All Sawyer wants to do now is convince her that he wants to give her a hand up, not a hand out. A near deadly encounter finally convinces her to extend her hand. She thinks she's not worthy of him. He aims to prove otherwise.

Shelter for Blythe is Susan Stoker's take on the plight of the homeless. Here, she introduces us to Blythe Coopman, a homeless woman who lost everything caring for her mother, who eventually succumbed to cancer.
We meet Sawyer “Squirrel” McClay, a firefighter, who falls for Blythe after encountering her in one of the fires that he helped put out.
Sawyer and Blythe's lives cross when, in the midst of lending Blythe his sweater, Sawyer inadvertently left his mobile phone in its pocket. Instead of going after Blythe, he saw the loss of his phone as a means to keep in touch with her, and that he proceeds to do as he tries to convince her to get off the streets.
Circumstances force Blythe to accept Sawyer's help when, one day, she was attacked in an alley. The rest, of course, you have to read to appreciate the story.
I understand that some readers are put off with some stories shining a light in the plight of the homeless. Whatever their reason, that is theirs to keep, and I know I should let that be.
But.
"The homeless know they can always go to a shelter."
"The homeless won't do anything because they know they can always beg for food/help/money."
"The homeless are lazy, entitled people who believe society owes them something and will not do anything to help themselves."
Why even shine a light on their plight, right? And what's up with Sawyer, taking one look at a homeless woman and knowing that she is the love of his life? Creepy much?
Yes, some of those who are homeless resort to a life of crime and drug addiction to make ends meet, and these are the ones we should be wary of.
But. Let us face the facts that not all homeless people are out for handouts. Just because they live in the streets, it does not mean that all of them are lazy. Some of them may have experienced circumstances that prevented them from having a roof over their heads, or, worse, a home with loved ones they can turn to when needed.
I have heard of a countless number of war heroes who go home thinking they have something to look forward to, someone to turn to when they needed them the most, only to end up in the streets because they have been abandoned by those who could not wait for them to come home.
I have heard the story of a teacher who, even with his master's degree, was forced to live in the streets when he fell ill and could not return to his profession.
I have read the story of a child who had to use a street lamp so that he could study at night--yes, he is able to go to a public school, but he lives on the streets with his Mom, who picks up discarded plastic bottles and barters them for food at recycling stations. His mom, I heard, was thrown out of their home, for giving birth to a child of rape.
So yes, turn a blind eye to the homeless. But when it happens to you, or your loved ones, know that you, yourself, can make a difference in their lives, and I hope that you do.

I was intrigued by Blythe's character when I read Justice for Milena. In that particular book given the high stake circumstances surrounding Milena's character, it was hard to be sure if Blythe was good or bad. She had to make a tough decision based on her own circumstances which ultimately affected Milena and resulted in her kidnapping, but what you find out is that Blythe made that decision not because she is a bad person, but she is just as much a victim as Milena was at that time. She has a big heart and her homeless circumstance is a story you want to learn about.
In a Shelter for Blythe Susan Stoker brings a tragic living condition to light and gives it a humanity.

I had been looking forward to reading Blythe’s story ever since we get a glimpse of her in Shelter for Sophie. There were so many questions surrounding her so it was great that I was able to finally read her story. And what a heart-breaking story it was. This book showed the strength and love that Blythe was capable of. I could not imagine enduring what she had to for the past year being homeless. The only beacon of light she had was the cell phone that was in the sweatshirt that Sawyer “Squirrel” had given her a few weeks prior. The eventual phone calls and texts made her feel safe and content in the otherwise scary reality she was in. As for Sawyer, these phone calls and texts were important to him too. Even though they were in each other’s presence for a few moments, he got to know Blythe by phone and he liked her and he was desperate to get her off the streets and safe. For weeks he offered to help, but Blythe refused to be in debt to anyone. When she finally thought maybe it would not be so bad to take him up on his offers, it was too late. Sawyer is notified of the attack on Blythe and he and the rest of his teammates and friends are immediately there for Blythe and does everything in their power to keep her off the streets and finally safe.
Blythe and Sawyer’s story was definitely an emotional one. Blythe’s heart was pure and so strong. Even out in the streets, she was there for people in trouble. I just loved her so much. As for Sawyer, he was not the typical alpha male. He had some self-image issues. He wasn’t as muscular or tall as the other and not as “manly,” but to Blythe, he was perfect. Even though they both felt like they were not good enough for the other, they were indeed perfect for each other.
Shelter for Blythe is a wonderful romance with the right amount of bad guys and dangerous situations. The friendship and camaraderie that is displayed in this book was so heart-warming. And the love that Blythe and Sawyer have for eachother is pure and just plain wonderful. Another stellar novel from the Badge of Honor series.

This was an amazing sad, hopeful romance with Blythe being saving by fire fighter emt, Sawyer. They met at a fire he was fighting and he gave her a sweatshirt because she was cold and inadvertently left his cellphone in the pocket. He decided to text her and let her use the phone since she was homeless and told her where she could charge it. This is how their love story began as they started texting back and forth and got to know each other. She was homeless since she had to quit her job to take care of her dying mother and sold everything she had of value to pay for her mother's medicines. She was then evicted on the day her mother died and had been homeless for a year now. Sawyer tried to get her help but she would not listen to him until she was attacked helping a tourist couple escape. Sawyer got her to move into his friend Sophie's house until she got back on her feet. Sawyer and Bylthe's love story proves that no matter what you look like on the outside the inner you is what really counts. He was a kind caring person and persevered until she accepted his help and eventually his heart. They got their happy ending and were determined to help another homeless mother, Hope and her son to move into Sophie's home since she was living with Sawyer now but just could not find them. They had all their friends looking for them as well and the next release is about Hope's life. I highly recommend this story as it opens your eyes to what the homeless must endure to just survive and it is very sad and uplifting to read about Blythe and Sawyer's fantastic love story.
