Rawwrrrr. Wait. Stop. What? Ummmm....

"With one glance, he knew what had to be done, and he set out to do it. He delivered orders with authority and circumnavigated murky waters with cunning. I love a smart and decisive man who walks onto the bridge and commands it. This is Captain John Jameson. He is the youngest captain of the fleet of corporate ships fleeing an Earth being eaten by solar flares. He has a specially close relationship with the slightly older ship's doctor. There are guys in (not red) uniforms who die. He sees a Maori woman - Ana - and goes after what he wants in a decisive way, despite the fact that she is his subordinate and technically off-limits, and she says no to mixing work and pleasure. After all, when did that ever stop Captain Kirk? Oh, is that who I am channeling?

Actually, though there are similarities to Star Trek - and maybe all space opera somehow unavoidably borrows from the standards in the class - it is different in one major way. And her name is Ana. Gene Roddenberry never wrote a character like her. Smart, adaptive, total tough chick in a brown-skinned package. Oh, wait, maybe he did. But Ana is MORE than Uhura. She is damaged, yet resilient, frightened but can bluff her way out of anything. She is good to have in a fight and a character with a brilliant moral center who mentors the heck out of an emerging AI with infinite power yet the life experience of a child.

The action is non-stop in this story. Yet, somehow, Nicola Claire finds time to move the emotional story forward at the same time. And there are a lot of relationships to track: Jameson and Ana, Ana and her aunt, auntie and the corporate mogul, the corporate mogul and his step-brother, Jameson and the doc, Jameson and the mayor, Ana and Pavo, Jameson and Pavo, old Pavo and new Pavo. Get it? Well, maybe you don't, but know there are a lot of moving parts and yet the story just builds and builds and there is a climax, and then it builds some more.

This book has an alpha captain powerfully attracted to a woman who challenges him at every moment, an interesting setting on a colonization ship, fairly minimal immersion in the sciency part of the science fiction, and pulse-pounding action sequences coupled with truly complicated suspense on the part of the villain. I enjoyed this book tremendously and immediately downloaded the sequel, which takes place on a different ship in the troubled fleet.

This wasn't bad as an actiony romance with sci-fi roots. But it wasn't great, either. You can tell that the romance is the main genre in this because a bunch of the sci-fi, or, well, plot, doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. Which is why it was majorly important that the romance be rock solid for this to work. Sadly, it wasn't.

So here's where the plot lost me: This makes no kind of sense. Unless, of course, the author is saving it for some dramatic play later on. Which only makes this worse!

Also, if you're going to double-down on the femiverse bylaws where nobody is allowed to rescue your heroine except herself, then please don't put her in situations where it's ridiculous for her to rescue herself. You can tell the author had to cheat because she had to cut the scene after the initial play. I don't know about you, but I want to know how you can go from tied to an upright table to free as a bird with a headbutt. I mean, cool, she head-butted the bad guy. Girl power. Only. Then she's free? Also, why didn't she take the bad guy out while she was at it? I mean, if we're exercising the power of womanhood here, why not just Rambo the whole bad guy team?

So yeah, this doesn't really pass muster on the sci-fi or action front. And frankly, I think part of the problem with the romance stems from not letting the hero be a hero. He's the captain of this mission. But all we see him do, really, is moon over this not-a-nurse and promote her to his second in-command for no reason. Also, trust a completely unreliable AI for no rational reason. Except that his babydoll wants him to. Let's just say that I'm glad I'm not a passenger on this love boat.

Okay, I've griped a lot. But I never put it down and I did find it interesting enough. I'm a fan of powerful women, even if they have to use the author as a prop to get there. It's three stars despite all the chaff I'm laying down. The background is interesting. And the AI struggling with how to be a good person was at least interesting. Plus, the bad guys at least made sense and the plot held together at least on that level. Which isn't nothing. I'm not sure if I'm interested in the rest of the series based on this one, but maybe.

A note about Steamy: There are two kinda-steamy sex scenes putting this on the low end of my steam tolerance. They're detailed enough for some steam, but not terribly explicit even so. It was like the author didn't quite want to commit to the full deal so we get some detail and then pull back. That's not necessarily a bad thing and fit the story well-enough so don't take this as a negative (unless you really like the dirty-dirty in your romances).

Star Treck meets Isaac Asimov's AI!

The Earth is dying… killed by its sun flaring…

And the humanity is trying to save as much people as it can…

Four groups have departed. Four separate sector’s fleets, founded by the richest of the planet and equipped with 4 AIs to guide them through the passing points and transition to New Earth.

But, in a true human behavior, the rich are privileged and the poorer must work for passage.

Still it is not enough for some as the richest as crew of Pavo will discover!

I LOVED this book!!!! It’s very well written, easy to read, exciting, full of suspense, interesting dialogues, intriguing ideas, a charming AI, full of unexpected and not so much unexpected moment, great MCs and secondary characters, sad moments, fun moments! It has everything you could possibly want! I loved every single page!

There’s also a nice addition of a hot romance!

What more could you want!

The first book in The Sector Fleet by Nicola Claire. Earth is doomed but if you had the money or skills you could escape on one of the ships headed to New Earth. Pay-for-passage passenger and ex-military Ana Kereama is there with her aunt and is assigned to work in the hospital. Not the place she wants to be. Captain John Jameson is charged with leading Sector Two to their new home with the help of AI Pavo. When a distress call comes that would delay the ship, the captain is conflicted between duty and compassion. The choice is then taken out of his hands and he teams up with Ana to keep the ship and passengers safe.

The story is written in first person point of view from both Ana and John's view. I have read Nicola Clare before and I like her style of writing. This series has me intrigued and I will definitely continue it.

A new series! Squee!

If you know me at all by now, you know that I tend to write what feels right. And writing The Sector Fleet has felt so very right to me. The greater this feeling, the better it all goes. And for the past couple of months, I have been completely immersed in this new world with these new characters and I. Have. Loved. It.

Science fiction is not for everyone, but I grew up a huge fan of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica and the like. In fact, I am still in love with those TV series today. And let's not even start in on the romantic science fiction books out there right now. But what I've tried to do is make this science fiction less about the science fiction and more about the people. Because, as I said, science fiction isn't for everyone.

But I do think The Sector Fleet might be!

So, this one felt right. And it might be set in space on fancy spaceships with plasma guns blazing, but it's full of characters who have pasts which they can't forget and hopes which they cling to and loves which they will do absolutely anything to protect.

In other words, it's chock full of all the usual Nicola Claire goodness; strong protagonists, sexy good times, romances that pull you in and tear you apart, and twist and turns that hopefully catch you unawares.

I've loved writing it. And so far, I'm not ready to stop. Books one and two will be coming out early 2018, and books three and four will not be long after, I think.

Oh, and because I know how you all love cliffhangers (not) this one is a single title series. Each book has an HEA and hot, sexy captains.

Love me some hot, sexy captains!

♥ Nicola

4.5 Stars! The first in a brand new series by Nicola Claire, Accelerating Universe (AU) opens us up to a brand new world. Fast-paced action, forbidden romance, and a rapidly evolving being combine to give us a thrilling ride through the unknowns of space.

Summary:
After a past filled with regret and death, Ana Kereama had accepted the inevitable. Being a resident of the ill-fated planet we all call home, and one with very little money at that, her future holds nothing but promises of burning. But through her elderly Aunt, Ana is granted a second chance, becoming a pay-for-passage passenger on board the Pavo, and one of the few given the chance to journey to the New Earth. With the hindrance of an unplanned solar flare Pavo and the rest of the fleet, roughly launch themselves into the unknowns of space, clinging only to thoughts of survival. Captain John Jameson has a responsibility to protect everyone on board his ship, and the vessels following his and the on board AI’s lead. When distressing news reaches him about those in the Sector One Fleet, behind them, he views them as his responsibility, too. Unfortunately, while he commands the bridge and AU crew, he does not have complete autonomy for the ship as a whole and is bound by a leaseholders agreement. Setting his plan in motion, it is quickly revealed that there are those on board with their own agenda. Unsure if damage sustained during launch has adversely affected Pavo’s operating system, Captain Jameson sees the necessity of teaming up with the beautiful and skilled Ana and the continually evolving Pavo. Danger and plasma fire lurk around every corner, but fighting for the wellbeing of roughly twenty thousand souls and the emerging sentient being within the ships walls becomes paramount. Trust is built, feelings acknowledged, and dark plots exposed. Can anyone hope to traverse the stars, arriving at their destination unaffected and unscathed?

After reading the last word of AU my only thought was, wow! I am in awe of the worlds Nicola creates and brings to life for our enjoyment. The Sector Fleet, as with all of her series, is complex, hopeful, and full of danger. Anyone who knows my reviews, is aware I’m always nervous to start a new series by my favorite authors due to elevated expectations. But AU brought on a nervousness that went far beyond that, rooting firmly in it being a very new-to-me genre. Being a huge fan of Star Trek (especially the recent reboot because Chris Pine, hello), I was visualizing this as I dove into Chapter One. I was not disappointed. With several similarities to the Star Trek Universe, Nicola built her own unique world, confined to space and bound by the restrictions that demands. Captain Jameson was a solid leader. His strong sense of duty and honor was clear from the beginning, and I loved that despite his heavy responsibility, he was at least a little open to new ideas and ways of doing things. Ana was a capable and intelligent heroine, but also incredibly vulnerable. Her tragic past very much still had a hold on her, despite her determination to trudge forward with her second chance. She was a fighter; not only for herself, but for those she had to leave behind and those whose lives she could save. The romance between the Captain and Ana was what I’d call a slow burn. The attraction was immediate, but the emotion and trust had to be built. I liked this a lot. It helped make the book exactly as Nicola had intended it, about the people. I did wish we had more of the relationship past it’s zenith. I think I’d like to see how they navigate their new roles to each other and the fleet. While there were several minor supporting cast roles, all of which I liked, including Dr. Medina, Lt. Chan, and the flight crew, the largest contribution to this group was that of Pavo. I was wary at first, not knowing if he could be trusted with the thousands of souls counting on him. By the end, he was probably my favorite character. He was impulsive, sometimes unsure, and made mistakes, but all of his actions came from a good place. He was evolving and learning as he went, but with the trust and guidance needed from Ana and the Captain. On the whole, I greatly enjoyed the start of my journey through space with The Sector Two fleet. The danger and opposition were thrilling and the romance was sweet. I appreciated that the futuristic gadgets and gizmos weren’t incomprehensible or, with the exception of Pavo, made to be too big of a deal. I did notice that not much was mentioned about the other ships in the fleet beyond the communications we read. This nagged at me a little because while our focus was on the mutiny on board Pavo, surely the other ships would know something was wrong. What was happening aboard their ships? Especially after the fleet-wide notification of the status of The Sector One Fleet and subsequent uprising onboard the lead vessel. That said, this is just a curiosity on my part, and not a point I felt the story was lacking. I’m keen to read more in the series and continue my trip through the stars. ♡

From the moment I picked this up I was completely in love with the characters, including (especially) the AI, I loved the development which went into them and how they grew with the storyline. I finished the book and was instantly craving another one, cant wait to see what the rest of the series will have to offer.

Fantastic

This is a new to me author and this book is exceptional. Full of action and emotion, both a hero and heroin full of life, and great storytelling. I will be reading all of her books that I can get my hands on.

Another fabulous story from a talented author

I’m a huge fan of this author and she never lets me down. Sh3s brilliant and can write anything in any genre. I was hooked from the first and had to finish this book. The characters are great, the story line captivating and she even makes you love an artificial intelligence machine!

An exciting start to a dynamic new series! I'm not generally a sci-fi fan, but this story is so focused on the characters and emotions that I couldn't help but love it. And of course, a fantastic romance as only Nicola Claire can create! This reminded me of the Citizen Saga in some ways, so fans of that series will love this.

"Even this did not feel as impossible with Ana at my side."

First of all, I adored Ana and Jameson. They are strong characters on their own and even better together. Ana faces her fears to overcome the ghosts from her past, and Jameson risks everything to do what he knows in his heart is right. The world as they know it is changing rapidly, and they have to make tough choices with repercussions that impact those well beyond themselves.

"I couldn't bring myself to regret that decision, even as I knew explanations and justifications would needed."

I also LOVED Pavo. AI in general is such an interesting concept, and Pavo is an intriguing character in his own right. Learning emotions and what it takes to be human was fascinating and added another level to the story. It also helps to cement Ana and Jameson's relationship even more. Pavo has formed a tight bond with Ana, and Jameson accepting Ana's trust in Pavo is a real turning point. The three of them together will be quite a team!

"I knew my role, and I would execute my orders diligently. I'd just execute my orders with the woman I loved at my side - and in my bed - with me."

The plot itself was really interesting with lots of twists and turns. Ms. Claire is very creative and has created a really fascinating world here, and I'm excited to see where things go next. I'm going to admit that the epilogue kind of went over my head, BUT it seems like some big things are ahead for book 2! And lucky for me, there will only be a very short wait for book 2 so yay!5 stars and a solid start to this exciting series!

ARC Review
This is a brand new series from Nicola Claire that is a little bit different from her normal stuff. Ana boards the Pavo vessel as the lowest woman on the totem pole, and soon things start to change for her. Not only does her position move up quickly, but she has a very strong attraction to the Captain of the ship. And when he needs her help to save the ship and a lot more people she stands up to help.

This book was an interesting start to the series. I thought it was really good, and enjoyed the world building. However, I felt like a lot of the "romance" and relationship part was rushed, but other than that, I thought it was a really good book. This was very different from a lot of the author's other work and I enjoyed that as well. I look forward to more in the series.

I loved this book, and I have to say that its not the type of book that I would normally read, sci-fi is not really my thing. BUT, its written by Nicola Claire and I love all her books. She has a very easy style of writing and the book just flows. It's exciting and keeps your interest and of course it has a lovely romance going at the same time. When it finished, I really wanted to know more about these wonderful characters and can't wait to read the next in the series.

3.5 stars. There’s a lot of weird and badly written sci-if romance on Kindle Unlimited. This is one of the better ones I’ve read. I liked the story and characters, especially Pavo. Jameson kept calling Ana by her first and last names. The whole book. That drove me nuts. But otherwise, I liked it.

I think fans of Michelle Diener’s Class 5 series would like this. I’ll definitely have to borrow the next one.

This is what I am taking about! I am a die-hard Trekkie and an unashamed owner of every single episode of entire Star Trek franchise including The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space 9, Enterprise ( and all of the movies of course ) as well as Babylon 5, Farscape and Firefly. This book fits perfectly with my love of this type of adventure Science Fiction. Smart, full of action with greatly appealing MC and well - defined secondaries. Great read, I am excited and off to the next one.

Ill be honest lads, this felt a tad too real sometimes. Everything about how the rich and powerful are in charge of the ships and get to decide everything and are awful and selfish, oh my. It might sound silly, but I can actually see that happening which is disturbing to say the least.

This book was enjoyable enough. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really feel much toward it. I loved Pavo and his relationship with Ana, I also liked when we saw John’s POV and his feelings for Ana. But Pavo was definitely my fav.

I don’t think I’ll be carrying on with this series, I liked this book but I hasn’t intrigued me enough for me to carry on. Too bad.

I'm happy to have read a true science fiction with Star Trek and Enterprise ship personel dynamics that make the shows such a great to watch.
I do appreciate the romance elements of the novel between Ana, a combat EMT and Jameseon, the captain of the one of the last ships from earth.

There are huge bites of the story that were just unbelief unrealistic. An AI only talking to one person on a ship, disregarding all orders, having hissy-fits for no rational reason and wanting to be human. Actually shutting down because it makes mistakes. What? In no way would I want the computer controlling everything to have emotional responses!!!

The whole fighting and 'uprising' seemed unreasonably unreal. It's like having a war on a deserted island. There are too few humans left to be killing off humans so blase. Also the 'uprising' also seemed ridiculously unreal. Why would they kidnapped Ana's elderly aunt? How could they download basically the whole computer processing unit of a galaxy ship into an iPad baiscally. For a military ship, how was it so easy for bodyguards to overtake combat soliders? After a while I was like the author could have set this up way more easily.

But for the most part it was interesting.

Ana Kereama and Captain John Jameson have a story to tell. They are leaving Earth behind and the voyage starts out almost being destroyed. Turns out that is the least of their problems. While Ana and John take turns as the point of view there is another character who is vitally important to the plot. Seems that Pavo the AI is another important character in the plot. It seems that there are people on board who want to change how the journey ends and who is in control. This is a very well written and plotted story line that manages to mix a romance in with the danger and tension. A very interesting story that should appeal to all Science Fiction Romance fans as well as just plain Science Fiction fans.

Great sci-fi book! No new themes however the author has a refreshing take on them. The relationships grow in a organic way and I couldn't put the book down :)

The downside for me was how the injuries were treated. In my mind, if you've just had major surgery and have broken ribs, you shouldn't be able to jump up the next day and run around the ship and do more fighting! Also,

Accelerating Universe is book one in the Sector Fleet series, actually the first book I read by this author, and I enjoyed it very much. As space adventures go, it's most realistic and believable, although I would have liked a bit more background on how the fleet prepared to leave Earth and when/how that came to happen. Also, the romance is pretty much subdued almost until the end.

I did love Pavo, the ship's artificial intelligence, and it was pretty interesting to see it develop and evolve until in became almost human.

The story is told from alternate points of view (Ana/Jameson) and at first it felt a bit confusing because one picks up where the other left off or a bit before, and it took me a while to get used to it. Once I got engaged into the plot, however, I almost read it all in one sitting.

There are three more books in this series and I intend to read them all in order, so stay tuned for the next reviews.

I like the FMC. I hate the man. Reallyyyy cannot stand him. His POV is just him being horny and attracted to her. It's over the top. So much so that it actively takes away from the plot by the end. The pacing of their relationship was just weird like veryyyy abrupt. Straight from attraction to love out of nowhere. Plus I don't like the power dynamic, especially since this is the second time she's been in this situation. In terms of the AI plotline, it was... okay? I didn't not like Pavo, but the storyline felt a bit overdone. Overall idk I enjoyed it in the beginning, but by halfway through, I was over it.

Accelerating Universe (The Sector Fleet, #1) I found the storyline to be great. The characters feel real, the situations feel real, and the power-hungry evil guy seemed real. If you don't mind a bit of romance, definitely check out this series. I am not into romance novels but it fit mostly in the syfy category, so I liked it. And I plan to finish the series. I found this ebook for free somewhere online and this is an honest review.

Huge fan of Nicola Claire. Love her kindred and Elite series. The sci-fi setting is great. However, i’m still a romance person. Would love to see more dynamics between Ana and John. It’s still an amazing read. Kept me on the edge. Couldn’t stop reading even when i have a swollen eye to nurse. Can’t wait for book #2

Extremely promising new Sci-fi Romance series

Great world building, without being excessive. Strong lead and supporting cast of characters, plenty of action and emotion. Keen to see more of the future with Ana and Jamison, will just have to content with where the next book in this series takes me.

With unintelligent characters, non story stupidity the kind of writer who would drop bombs in space and expect gravity to make them fall on something. Someone with no understanding of physics wrote this and why a publisher would publish it is beyond me.

Likable FMC

I liked the FMC. I liked how capable she was. I liked the MMC until the last chapters. As a captain, he is great. As a man, he is horrible.

Spoiler
The FMC looses her only family member and he does not give her time to grieve. Instead, tells her to meet him that night for a date. Then he talks about sleeping with her that night. Have you no empathy? Who does that?

Interesting book. I loved watching the AI develop. The characters had depth and I enjoyed getting to know them. The romance building was slow, which I enjoy more than "Hi let's go to bed."
