Kinsella is hands down my favorite chick-lit writer but Lindsey Kelk arrives at a dangerously close second. I was overjoyed to see she had a fresh standalone available that detoured away from her two existing series. We Were On a Break was a little bit annoying but mostly very funny. Let me break it down by the goods and the bads annoyings based on my opinion.

Goods:
-Alternating POV's of the female lead Olivia and male lead Adam. I've not yet read a Kelk book that offered a male perspective.
-I adored all of the characters on Olivia's side. Loved DC and David the most!!
-The humor!! God, there were some funny parts.
-Kelk's ability to make the unlikable characters not so horrendous by the end of the book...even Chris.
-Olivia's personal growth/assertiveness.
-A few great quotes and strong life lessons.
-Feel good sigh at the end despite the annoying bits. I really did smile and say "Awwww" after the last line :)

Annoyings:
-Alternating POV's had no indicator that the POV was shifting. A heading or chapter number change or something really is necessary.
-Basically all the characters on Adam's side, including Adam for the main portion of the book.
-Adam's role of victim for about the first 80% made me sick since he was the one who's childlike behavior started it all. (Yes, I realize I am sounding childlike now.)
-

So, the "Goods" list outweighs the "Annoyings" list. Overall, I truly enjoyed this as the chick-lit that it was. If you need a light, fluffy read for yourself, then check it out!

My favorite quote:
"There’s a lot to be said for someone who understands who you are and where you’re from –don’t underestimate how much those things matter. It’s a lot more important to find someone who appreciates the things that made you who you are today than someone with a nice bum and a Ferrari."

Note: I'm not sure if Ross's infamous line in Friends had anything to do with this title or Ms. Kelk's overall inspiration but I included one of the many available gifs for memory's sake. Doesn't it make you want to go back and watch that episode!! Season 3, episode 15 to be exact. Don't worry, I googled it, I totally didn't know that off the top of my head ;)

The minute I read this title, I knew I had to read it! Admit it, you thought of Friends too when you saw it!

Liv and Adam have been dating for a few years now, and she’s watched her best friend marry Adam’s brother and have a baby, and logically she assumes that her proposal is coming. When her best friend tells her that Adam has confided in his brother that he’s going to ask her on their vacation, well, Liv can’t seem to think of anything else.

Then the last day of their vacation arrives and while it seems like it might happen, absolutely everything seems to be going wrong and they end up leaving Mexico, not engaged and for some reason angry with each other and when Adam drops Liv at her door, and tells her he needs a break, she isn’t quite sure what to think about anything anymore.

She throws herself back into her work as a veterinarian, animals after all, are so much easier than people and Adam focuses on the new bar project he has, but both are now struggling to make sense of what happened and where that leaves them now. Are they happier apart, were they simply together because it was comfortable?

Liv and Adam on the outside really worked, but when there was the smallest bump in the road, everything went to hell. I really loved that Liv didn’t just sit on the sidelines while Adam figured his crap out, and she didn’t just let his apology make everything okay again. They both have some major soul searching to do and I love that the author lets them do it.

And yes… things happen while they are taking a break.
 photo tumblr_inline_ob946cf7nr1qdn4wk_500_zpswidefrlu.gif

It’s honest and realistic and ultimately it helps these characters find who they are what they see for themselves in the future in ways that I don’t think there was any way to do it.

This story isn’t all drama though, there are some definite fun and light-hearted moments that really worked for me. I loved Liv and her friends and the things they got into, and I really enjoyed the family rumor mill that caused most of the problems in the first place.

If you’re a fan of women’s fiction (or adult fiction as I like to call it) this is definitely going to be a read you’ll want to try! It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s sad and it’s frustrating, and I think “we were on a break” is probably one of the most hated phrases in Friends history but I love it!

Thank you to the publisher for an early copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Not gonna lie - I was really disappointed with this one.
Not only the story was far from intresting, but the author went with humour that wasn't funny at all at times, and was even unnecessary and uncomfortable (I mean, who'd ask a father of a child you're at christening party for, in the middle of an argument, if he has penis issues? That was not funny. It was stupid. It made Liv look even more stupid.)

My main problem was that two different POVs sounded EXACTLY the same, and since there was no even any notice who's perspective we're reading atm, it took some time to figure out that on my own.
I truly believe I'm not the only one!

Release Date: January 3, 2017
Genre: Chick Lit

Lindsey Kelk is an amazing author and I highly anticipate her releases. So when I saw she was releasing a new book (this one) I knew I had to read it! All of my TBR pile was actually put on hold so I could dive into this one and I was not disappointed in the slightest! While I did find it to be a little more slow than her previous release (Always the Bridesmaid) I still enjoyed this one immensely. The characters - Liv and Adam - were a riot (and slightly sad, but for reasons you will see when you read it), the secondary characters were just as good (I would love to see a spin off with them) and the plot engaging. Who knew that one slight problem could ricochet into epic proportions!

Overall, this is a really good read and I would definitely recommend it to fellow readers. It's funny (some of the stuff that the author comes up with will make you roll around the floor laughing), it's unique, and connecting with the characters is as easy as having a conversation with your BFF. The drama is a bit high in this one though and there were many times that I wanted to insert myself in the book and slap a few people, but this of course adds to the plot and makes the book what it is. So, if you enjoy chick lit novels that will make you laugh than this is certainly a book for you!

What do you do when your boyfriend who had planned on putting a ring on it suddenly says he wants "a break?" What does that mean? That's what happens to Liv. Lindsey Kelk's warm romantic comedy is the story of two people trying to figure out what they want—both romantically and in their own lives.

Liv and Adam's Mexican vacation doesn't go as either of them had planned. Adam was supposed to propose to her. Liv was expecting a proposal, as she had been tipped off by her best friend, Cass, who is also Adam's brother's wife. But oddly enough, the proposal didn't happen and instead their last night in paradise was anything but romantic. Now back in Long Harrington after a disappointing end to their trip, Adam says he wants a break. Not only that, her father unilaterally decides he's handing over the family veterinary clinic to Liv. What does Liv want? What does Adam want?

This book was quite funny in several parts. But if I'm completely honest, it moved quite slow for me. The book felt very long, which was likely due to the very introspective narrative. While I don't mind this style per se, it didn't entirely work because I didn't feel completely engaged with Adam or Liv. In the beginning, Adam came off as a jerk and Liv made some choices that I didn't quite understand.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy the story overall. And I really loved Liv and Adam's friends. My favorite character was Liv's co-worker, David. He was a riot! He is crass, a ladies man, and eternally hopeful that Liv's other best friend, Abi, will let him take her to pleasure town. Side note: I was really hoping that something would happen between these two. I'd totally be okay if Kelk wanted to write a spin-off with Abi and David. Please let that happen.

Normally when couples break up and then don't communicate, that bothers me. But it didn't irritate me with this book because it felt natural. This is categorized as women's fiction, which implies a woman's journey. But Adam has his own story arc and self-realization. His brother Chris is sort of the golden boy, while Adam is a law school dropout turned carpenter who's living in his grandparents house. He feels inadequate for Liv, who's a veterinarian. But throughout the story, he really comes into his own skin and realizes what he wants.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for a fun romantic comedy. Even though I found it to be slow, it was delightful in many parts.

Thanks to Harper for providing me with an advance copy for review. Receiving this book for free did not affect my opinion.

We Were On a Break is my first book by author Lindsey Kelk. I would consider this book Chick Lit or contemporary romance/humor.

The book has two narrators: Liv and Adam.

The first thing I noticed is that this book is very British. The book takes place in a little English village. She is a vet. He does carpentry. I was very glad that my kindle had a dictionary because there were many British words/phrases that I was unfamiliar with before reading this book.

There were a few expressions/phrases that were key to the story. The first is that when the book begins they are on vacation. But the British call it holiday. Another key thing is that Liv works in a surgery, which is what the British call the place where medical practitioners treat their patients.

The basic story is that the book starts with Liv and Adam on vacation. She is waiting for him to propose. But something happens. And then one thing leads to another...

The book had some very funny moments. But there were a few too many misunderstandings. To me the last part of the book was the most enjoyable.

I found the alternating narrators a bit confusing. Sometimes the narrator changed mid-chapter. I would have preferred for the name of the narrator to be written. It was less confusing when the narrator alternated every chapter (which was most of the book). But still there were a few times when I had to read something over more than once to be sure who was talking.

I liked that Liv had an interesting job. I liked that we got to see her work as a vet. I adored her nurse David who worked with her. And her girlfriends and her cat were very funny. I also loved Adam's friend Tom. However his brother Chris was crazy.

Overall, this book was light and funny. The story was amusing. This is an enjoyable quick read that features lots of craziness.

Thanks to edelweiss and HarperCollins 360 for allowing me to read this book.

We Were On a Break was one of those books I picked because of the title name. I definitely felt like it was an anthem for most relationships that go on and off breaks. Not necessarily my own relationships but then again I could totally get behind it? I don't know.. it probably doesn't make sense.

This book follows Liv and Adam. They've been dating for a few years and obviously a proposal is supposed to ya know.. happen. Apparently Liv get's wind that a proposal will happen while she's on vacation with Adam.. yet it doesn't happen. They end up going on a break - well, Adam just kind of tells her that it's going to happen.

After that well, Liv throws herself into work like any normal human being does after being dumped. She's a veterinarian which I definitely approved of. I adore animals and it made me like Liv even more! Now at the beginning, these two seemed to work amazing. However, the slightest thing would make them act all kinds of crazy. I get that the little things matter in a relationship but they shouldn't tear them apart either.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was totally realistic with relationships because things do happen when people go on a break. This book gave you enjoyable characters, humor, frustration, and all kind of things that are in every relationship.

This novel has an After I Do vibe with British humor and not as mature main characters. The beginning is funny and it has a good ending but is slow in places in between. I like how it alternates chapters from the point of view of Adam and Liv. In these chapters, we get to see their thoughts, feelings, and how they carry on after the break. Despite it's few flaws I really enjoyed it. 3.5 stars!

Aw man, this one took forever because the past 1.5 weeks have been crazy. I can honestly say that the book itself wasn't to blame for how long it took me. It's an easy, fast paced book. Funny, light, a bit romantic and something I normally wouldn't read but that I quite enjoyed in between all those deep, psychological books I mostly read. I wouldn't mind seeing this in movie form and I felt it was very realistic and relatable with everything that was going on between the two main characters. Whether the author intended to make me dislike Adam or that just happened because he's a guy who messes up big time, I don't know. But I did dislike him and I loved Liv. Such a great character. It's nice having one character to root for and being angry with the other. I might read more books by this author in the future!

DNF at 40%

Full review on https://thesundayfeeling.wordpress.com/

I used to enjoy Lindsay's writing, especially the I Heart series, but I just couldn't carry on with this one. I started reading it in May, and I never felt excited to pick it up. I tried to continue with it recently but just got the feeling that I was wasting my time.

I want to start by saying that I think part of the reason for my decision to DNF this book is purely down to my taste in genre changing in the past year. I was very much 50/% into physiological thriller and mystery, and 50% chick lit and contemporary. Now, don’t get me wrong I still enjoy a fun contemporary every so often, but it has to grab my attention and keep me reading, and unfortunately I would say I more inclined to pick up something a little more dark and mysterious noways.

In terms of We Were On a Break, I know I should have pushed through this at least to the 50% mark, but I just couldn’t read anymore. As much as I was interested in what the outcome would be, I felt like it was taking a lot of rambling without much plot to get there, and I found myself not wanting to pick it up. I actually tried getting into the story for a good 5 months before making the decision to DNF it.

The two POV’s didn’t exactly put me off, as I have read other books written in the same way and done really well in the past. However in this case, both POV’s were far too simular and I felt I was again, reading a lot of rambling and repeated details that in actually fact didn’t really matter.

I was also a little put off with the fact that considering the two main protagonists were about to get engaged at the very start, they were acting incredibly immature and childlike! Both Liv and Adam wanted to get back together, but didn’t want to contact the other, and at one point Adam’s character was portrayed to be having what I can only describe as “physical sexual feelings” towards a client based on her appearance. I mean come on!

I was a big fan of Kelk when I was younger and I loved the “I HEART” series. I wont say this book has put me off of Kelk’s writing going forward, but I will defiantly be doing a little more research before rushing to the book store. Sorry Lindsey.

'We Were On a Break' is about Liv and Adam, who are on their last day of holiday in Mexico. Adam actually wants to propose to Liv, but nothing really works out the way he wants it. From then on, things go all wrong and what should've been a day to celebrate turns into a break in their relationship...

I loved this book. It might even be the best Lindsey Kelk one I read so far. The characters were really great (except Adam at times), the plot was great, even their jobs were great (Liv is a vet!). What I also really appreciated was that Lindsey Kelk finally (!) managed to create mature and responsible people. They didn't drink themselves to death every other day for example, which is a real improvement. I loved it. It's not that I hate all her other books or something, because I don't, but it was just really quite refreshing not reading about a 'little girl' wanting to work in fashion or events or whatever.

Adam's thoughts were led astray for some time, which I hated, but in the end he kind of made up for that, so it's okay. The ending itself was lovely and just how I wished for it to be. ♥

So, it's a really great book and I can only recommend it. ♥

In general, this is a very nice book. It's witty and generally pretty well written.

However, the basic concept turned out to be not that satisfying. The story is told from two points of view, Liv and Adam's. As I said, it's well written, so you really engage in their lives, in how they both totally love the respective other one etc. At the same time you dread encounters between the two of them, because you realise that there's still more than half of the book left. That means, they are just going to extend their break for whatever reason. That made the 'he loves me, he loves me not' or 'I want to end this break' talks somewhat redundant. Again and again and again.

Once that's settled down a little, Adam has his big performance. Such a shame as he seems to be a more or less reasonable guy. But at the sight of Jane, he goes completely animal. In a completely idiotic way. Does it really work like that, any-guy-who's-reading-this-review? Ugh, that was so stupid. At least it didn't escalate :D Instead, it was solved in a satisfying way. And the ending was really nice as well.

Lindsey Kelk is a fantastic writer and has twelve books to her name, of which I’ve read 90% of them and I can safely say she’s always an author who can make you chuckle, and her pop culture references are on par with Lorelai Gilmore’s (and that’s saying something). She’s stepped away from her “Girl” series for now (or forever? *SOBS*) and has brought us another fantastic stand-alone, which must have taken all of it’s inspiration from Friends, because what else can anyone possibly think, with the title We Were On A Break? It’s all very Ross and Rachel, but without the cheating (phew!), instead it’s a nixed marriage proposal which throws a spanner in the works for Liv and Adam and suddenly their rosy future isn’t quite so rosy…

Lindsey has broken away from her traditional girl-only POV, to give us both Adam AND Liv’s POV this time around, which is amazing, because we get to see their break from both perspectives. Frankly, they both needed their heads bashing together – Adam for starting this whole thing, and for throwing the most spectacular tantrum known to any two-year-old on their flight home and Liv for not sticking up for herself and asking where her damn ring was. Okay, so that may have made things worse, but I’m all for honesty and these two just seemed to be so far apart, so misunderstanding of what the other was saying, that it made me want to weep because they obviously did work as a couple, they were just wildly misunderstood. Proving, once and for all, that the phrase being on a break is the worst phrase in the history of mankind. FACT.

I really enjoyed We Were On A Break. I loved hearing about Liv’s job as a vet, which was a nice departure, and I liked all of Liv’s friends (spin off for David, please?) and the whole book skips a long at a really good pace. Although I had no idea how this book would end, genuinely. Because just as it looks like Adam and Liv might be getting somewhere, another spanner comes into the mix and it’s up in the air again, and there were points I just wanted to weep for all the lost love, due to mix ups. I loved being in both of their heads, though, that was so, so fun, and I hope Lindsey does that again because she wrote Adam so well!

It’s so easy to see why Lindsey Kelk is so loved – I love her books, I look forward to her new release every year, and she’s one of the most on-point writers, ever. I’m sad it’s over, because that means a year before her next year (I’m sobbing in the corner quietly, and counting down the days..) but this is a great stand-alone, even if it means all you’ll hear for the entire duration is Ross, in your head, yelling, “WE WERE ON A BREAKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!” It’s so worth it.

[...] <- That was your chance to insert all allusions to Ross and Rachel.
Now, on we go with the important business, aka my two pence on this book.
As you may or may not know, I started a new uni course, moved flats, and started reading Anna Karenina in the same time frame.
Please someone remind me of convenient time management.
Anyways, that was just not going on, I needed some easy distraction.
Since I live in walking distance of three bookshops and the library now (oh the big city temptations!), it didn't take long for me to get one book from each and every one of those places in an approx. three week time-span.
We Were On A Break was one of the chosen babes and due to it being chiclit and easy to read, I barged right in and got what I expected.
Which is a good-ish thing, with chiclit.
A big amount of cozy feelings, relatability and obvious plotlines plus very real characters and a ton of pop cultural references (oh hey there Kardashians and strobing and throwing shade...).
Also, if you want to win me over, include a mention of custard cream biscuits and I'm your gal.

Nothing groundbreaking but a lovingly crafted story with a lot of truth in it.
Enjoyed the Britishness, though it felt unnaturally emphasized - could that be because Lindsey Kelk is British but now lives in the US and needs to compensate?
Je ne sais pas, but it was quite in-your-face with the typical UK elements.
(Basically tea. And bloody this, bloody that.)
All in all, this was not a very challenging read but it leaves a good aftertaste though.

I loved this book. The humor in particular was spot-on the entire time.
As the title suggests, the story is about a couple having a bit of a rocky road... and throughout the story we get to see how they cope. I particularly liked the different POV, we have both the female side and male side, which I love in fiction.

Overall, We Were On a Break is a lighthearted, hilarious, romantic comedy that will cheer you up and will have you turn the last page with a smile on your face.

I was sent a review copy and I must say that I liked the proof copy cover much better than the original published copy. Lindsey Kelk writes the most funniest lines. I adore all of her novels. You just have to laugh out loud reading this fabulous story. Every audience will love it. One word of warning when your on holiday going for a walk, wear flat shoes to avoid blisters.

Hela känslan efter boken är "meh".. Fanns ingen spänning, ingen romantik, inget intressant nånstans. Bara tankar som flög fram och tillbaka och förvirrade känslor. Lite besviken. Slutet var väl fint, men väntat.

Although I read maybe 70% crime, the remaining 30% is spent reading books like these. I am a bit of a Lindsey Kelk fan and loved the Angela Clarke series of books. However, this latest release I knew nothing about other that the fact I loved the author. When I started reading I realised that Lindsey Kelk has not lost her touch and as I read I recalled that one of her skills was telling the 'real' version of event. Especially dialogue between characters and this book is no different.

Liv is on holiday with her boyfriend Adam and she knows a secret. Adam is going to propose!!! Only he doesn't, and what was meant to be a return from holiday with a rock on her finger ends up being the start of a 'break' between them. They are such likeable and normal characters with a whole host of secondary characters, all of which were brilliant. Vet is a vet and works with her father in the practice in their village. Adam is a self-employed carpenter who has a ridiculously self-important older brother Chris who plays his part in getting Adam into a stick situation.

Just a few chapters in and I was belly laughing at some of the situations they both found themselves in. The great thing about this was that each chapter was written from the POV of either Liv or Adam so we get to see how they are both coping with their current situation. Liv has a whole host of friends who are fabulous in equal measures, one of which is Cass who is married to Adam's brother, the outspoken and blunt Abi, and the absolutely fabulous David her colleague from the Vets.

Throw in a cat named Daniel Craig (legendary!) some crazy parents a whole village that stick their oar in and you have the winning combination. Lindsey Kelk clearly writes from the heart and creates characters that you will fall in love with. This was an absolute joy to read and made me hastily return to my blog to see which books I have missed out on. Thankfully it is only one book I've missed, but with the miserable winter approaching I now have something to cheer me up!!!

Back in the day, I was a chicklit girl through and through. Lindsey Kelk, Sophie Kinsella, they were my comfort food. I picked up We Were On a Break, and immediately I remembered why I loved Lindey's writing style. The witty, comical bickering between Adam and Liv had me right from the start, but then something went very, very wrong.

In the beginning, their arguments felt very Ross and Rachel, and had me in stitches. But then they turned bland, treading water and the book lost its funny side. I liked the characters, but I wanted more and unfortunately, just didn't get it. For a vet, Liv made some strange comments throughout the book. A qualified vet, feeding food like Whiskas? A vet, saying there's rarely anything that can be done for a rabbit? It didn't feel genuine, and neither did Adam's voice. The only difference in Adam's chapters were the male slang, and occasional profanity. It didn't feel genuine.

This book had quite a few stereotypes, and some sentences felt a little problematic for me. Little things like, "Is your brother special?" "Not that kind of special" (not the exact quote, but close enough) is an offensive term for learning difficulties and it didn't sit well with me.

I loved the beginning, I liked the end, but...it was just okay in the middle. Full review to come on my blog and Youtube channel.

We were on a break is a book about the funny side of a break up, between a couple that instead of getting married decided to take a break. I thought there was something missing, the story was original but not real, the back and forth between the characters were confusing, not very well developed. These people drink a lot!! How could you want to go out with your friends right after you arrive from a holiday vacation that went wrong? Too immature for me, I think I read too many books and I can’t just give away stars to books that didn’t make me feel something, anything!!! That’s what I am after when I’ m reading, I want something different.
Thanks for the ARC, maybe next time!!

This author writes similar to Sophie Kinsella. Not quite as fast moving and funny, but nonetheless "bloody" good, lol!

Cute book, a quick read, a nice escape which will be easily forgotten, but that's ok! I love English chick lit, and this book is just that!

Hmm, this book just didn't really do it for me. It had a few funny moments but, on the whole, it was just a really dragged out story where not a lot happened. Plus, the male characters were far too incredible!
