First Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Governor of New York. Negotiator of the treaty to end the American Revolution and the treaty that would stave off a second war with Great Britain for a few vital years until the infant nation was strong enough to take on its former adversary once again. Abolitionist. Father of American counterintelligence. Inside you will read about... ✓ The Forgotten Founding Father ✓ The Jays of New York ✓ The Father of American Counterintelligence ✓ Negotiating the Treaty of Paris ✓ The Unpopular Jay Treaty And much more! How is it that the Renaissance man of America’s early history is so little known, with no image on Mount Rushmore, no face on currency, and certainly no Broadway musical to his posthumous credit? Perhaps it’s because he was not a man who sought renown. Throughout his career, others, including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams, sought his help when the country was in need of his skills. John Jay’s role in the establishment of the United States, a country that was founded upon ideals of freedom and democracy, has almost been forgotten. But that omission is now being remedied as editors at Columbia University plan to release a seven-volume biography of Jay’s life by 2020. In the meantime, discover for yourself the remarkable story of one of the architects of the American nation, John Jay.
I liked the fact that deserved recognition has been paid to John Jay. This book also shows how difficult it must have been to find an effective way to consolidate the American Republic, and how important were and still are the basic constitutional principles on which it stands, and also the fine and enlightened minds that put those principles together in a coherent document which has withstood the passage of time and political evolution, and is still very much alive today
I have heard John jay used a lot but honestly did not know the full history, I am glad I learned about this country’s founder that hopefully will never be forgotten again.
I knew that John Jay was our country’s first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court but I was unaware of the multitude of things he accomplished in making the US a country and not a collection of former colonies. He was well ahead of his time with his fight to end slavery in his home state of New York. An excellent book for a quick study of this Founding Fathers.
John Jay is one of the unsung heroes of the early days of American democracy. His efforts during the Revolution contributed to the birth of the nation. His work on the Constitution and the Federalist papers helping set the rule of law and cohesion of the states. His work to abolish slavery showed his true humanitarian beliefs. Equal to the other founders his work helped form a new nation. High level but good read well worth the time.
A good overview/intro to Jay. As with other complainants, I think the publisher was embarrassed to put page numbers on such a short book (about 50, with large font and margins, like a good school report). Noted at the end, Jay had an outsized role for his publicity as a Founding Father, but until recently there was little documentation to show his involvement. "The Quartet" delivers more detail.
I had never realized how important John Jay was to the founding of our country. This book surely rectified my ignorance. I enjoyed learning about John Jay. Thank you for this book.
Besides being the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in new little about this interesting man. He was a humble hero. Rather than write a spoiler review let me say just read this well written book. Recommend.
The final words of this book perhaps summarise this founding father “He was the equal of the other Founding Fathers in his accomplishments and attributes. Perhaps, in his humility, he was their superior.”
