Twenty-eight years ago, Erich von Daniken first presented his theory of alien contact with the ancient world - a theory so incredible, yet so logical and convincing, that it has become part of a wide-ranging debate that continues to this day. His claims that an alien race helped create the pyramids of Egypt were based upon the ruins themselves. And it is these ruins that now provide researchers with a never-ending source of clues - new discoveries, new revelations, new evidence that Earth was indeed colonized by an alien race... New research showing that the location and design of the pyramids were uniquely fit for preservation - something the Egyptians couldn't possibly have known; remains of the ships built by the Pharaohs and buried with them for travel in the afterlife - imitations of the ships they saw used by men from the sky; the most recent discoveries - hidden chambers and passageways, one of which ends at an ancient door. And behind the door is... the unknown; prehistoric bones that prove the existence of a worldwide cult that deformed children's skulls in imitations of the "gods" they had seen; and new interpretations of ancient writings - and new speculations on ancient mysteries.
Greek: Έριχ φον Νταίνικεν Born on April 14th, 1935, in Zofingen, Switzerland, Erich von Däniken was educated at the College St-Michel in Fribourg, where already as a student he occupied his time with the study of the ancient holy writings. While managing director of a Swiss hotel, he wrote his first book, Chariots of the Gods, which was an immediate bestseller in the United States, Germany, and later in 38 other countries.
Von Däniken's books have been translated into 28 languages, and have sold 60 million copies worldwide. From his books two full-length documentary films have been produced: Chariots of the Gods and Messages of the Gods. Of the more than 3,000 lectures which Erich von Däniken has given in 25 countries, over 500 were presented at universities. Fluent in four languages, Erich von Däniken is an avid researcher and a compulsive traveller, averaging 100'000 miles each year to remote spots of the Earth. This enables him to closely examine the phenomena about which he writes.
Von Däniken is a member of the Swiss writers association, the German writers association, and the International PEN-Club.
I really enjoyed this book. I think alot of what is accepted as science needs to be examined objectively and what is regarded as psuedo-science needs the same treatment. Not everything is so cut and dried.
Very good book at denying the fundamentalism in Egyptology, and I thing he has some good retorts to many of the accepted beliefs in archaeology. I prefer Coppens objectivity a bit more, but acknowledge the dates these were written alluded to more speculation, especially about the builder of the Great Pyramid/Sphinx. Having taken 4 classes in Egyptology, it has always been a tough sell Cheops got all of this done in his slow reign, and I still find that difficult to buy into. His claims about Herodotus accepted at one point and not another are a testament to how scholars can look at anything with eyes that refuse to be objective.
More racist nonsense from the same author who tries to erase the achievements of indigenous people. Tries to create the belief that ancient white people, or aliens inspired the non-white people of the world to make great monuments and civilized society.
Racist. Demeaning. Misleading. Especially to those curious about the Ancient Alien theory. An insult to anthropologists who have worked arduously to bring us research about the technologies of the past.
"Research showing that the location and design of the pyramids were uniquely fit for preservation---something the Egyptians couldn't possibly have known." States his audiobook. Really, now?
The ancient alien theory is thought-provoking, but surely it can be approached from a non-racist, demeaning, and undermining lens? This author's works are littered with bigotry and exoticizing undertones. It is one thing to interpret evidence: writings, pictographs, fossils, burial remains. It is another thing entirely to dismiss evidence of real working ancient technologies and promote "Ancient civilizations that have spanned thousands of years surely don't know anything about the place they live in, or what they're doing!". This is the message of every one of his books, presented as "research".
2,5/5. Having previously read Chariots of The Gods with a mild appreciation I was lot less enthusiastic to get into this one but I already had it so... Why not?
Very similar, repetitive in some way, while going deeper in others ideas. Only center into ancient Egypt, and also longer, so that is why it could go deeper on some maters. Again we find a lot of assumption and speculation with proof that are hardly verifiable. I like the thought provoking ideas behind it, but again, like with Chariots, it age poorly. What was probably new and ground breaking at the time, here is mostly knows to anyone who truly have an interest into this particular topic. I didn't learn much and I was expecting more from it.
Von Däniken is excellent at compiling stories and facts, the basis of his knowledge is deeply impressive. I wish I hadn't let myself be put off reading his books for so long in the name of science. Even if everything he wrote was nonsense, my esteemed colleagues in archaeology would still have to read his books. Without courageous and revolutionary theses, there would be no progress. Little has happened in the field of academic archaeology since this book was published. In times of cutbacks in research funding and professorships, no one risks one of the highly competitive jobs to pursue unusual theories. I have been attacked for far less spectacular theories, but I know how the system of defamation and ridicule works. Fortunately, it's not quite so easy to deceive the public these days. Thanks to the internet and social media, even amateurs can follow what is happening in the field of alternative archaeology and network worldwide.
I purchased a copy of this book. Especially, I gone through it for several times, definitely it was in my own mother-tongue I read it. And, I found it awesome! It raises questions in mind, and somehow, it makes you to think many times - were those real? I was talking about the Labyrinth, the long-frozen canal, the excavations made and related founds, the documentation of the ancient travellers like Herodotus.. and the travellers from a different timeline who depicted the same thing in their books. But then, the evidence are gone in an unknown time-frame. Egypt was able to hold its secrets frozen to the modern era.
This is one of my favorite book of the same author; and it definitely raises curiosity to examine and recheck the evidence many times. I wish author's long lifeline to reveal the hidden side of the history. Either it is now, or never!
It is an excellent book that you must read in order to find out the truth and secret behind the great pyramid. It is one of the most researched sites of ancient times. We have come through many pieces of evidence and facts but still, fail to draw any conclusion from them. It is a nice book that has tried to uncover the secrets and succeed as well.
An okay book. Däniken goes into detail about the Great Pyramid in Egypt and the various theories behind its building and the mysterious shafts which have been found and ignored by the mainstream archeologists.
Mr von Däniken is famous for his books speculating about the possibility that space aliens have visited ancient societies. As implied by the title, this one touches on his thoughts about Egypt. It is still a mystery how the pyramids were built, sealed tombs are sometimes opened to find no bodies, and some of the amazing structures referred to by otherwise trustworthy ancient writers are missing. His research is very good, and his arguments compelling. However, occasionally he is drawn to flights of fancy that even the most open-minded reader must question. For example, he suggests that mythological beings, as depicted in wall paintings and other decoration, are the results of genetic experiments by the visiting off-worlders; there are no skeletal remains because the Egyptians crushed the bones of all the dead animals. It is wild arguments like this that put him in the realm of crackpot theorists, so when he is dismissed by academics, he should not be surprised. Instead, he spends the entire last chapter on a rant against an apparent conspiracy in professional archaeology against him and anybody else who dares to challenge the established knowledge base. This kind of emotional outburst has no place in a proper debate of the facts. I don't think I'll be reading any more of his writing.
A decent book with mostly objective reporting. This is the Daniken I want to read. One of the books I read to prepare for a book I'll be writing next year.
