Cherish the Dream

Rate this book
It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for naturalist Theodora Gordon. Leaving her affluent New England home, the bookish, gently bred beauty headed west to join a government expedition across America's last frontier—and to face the wrath of the drive's rugged, irascible leader, Captain Blade Roberts.

The handsome son of a French-Canadian trapper and a Cheyenne princess, Blade feared for the life of the innocent, pampered Easterner he was duty-bound to protect. But in a cruel and magnificent wilderness—on a perilous journey plagued by treachery, tragedy and deceit—Theodora would win the virile half-breed's grudging respect with her courage and stamina…and win his heart with the passionate promise of an irresistible and eternal love.

I ran across this author by accident and have been hunting for other books that she wrote since then. This is an amazing historical romance about a half-breed native American that leads some troops out west to map the US territory. Captain Blade Roberts is the son of French-Canadian trapper and a Cheyenne princess who never married. His father eventually returns to his white wife and family leaving his mother and him to make do. He was able to attend and graduate from West Point and became an asset to the United States government.

At the beginning of this story Blade meets Theodora Gordon and her twin brother, Tom. Quakers, they have been given a rich childhood, and they are now both respected topographers. Theodora is engaged to an older man. Naive, they respect each other but she believes she will eventually love the man. But before marrying him, she earns the support of her father to go on this trip.

This piece of fiction initially takes place at Fort Leavenworth in the Kansas territory. The year is 1836. When Blade first meets 'Theo' he had assumed she was a man. Who wouldn't when the correspondence he read was signed Theo. & Thos. Gordon? But one look at her and he thinks she looks like a princess and has absolutely no place on this journey.

What happened next reminds me of reading a bodice ripper from years ago and I was going to give away the book but I am so glad I didn't. Something made me continue to read it. All I can say is stick with this intriguing adventure/love story. Honestly, you start to feel as though you are right there; that is how good Ms. Harrington's style of writing is.

Over the next days, weeks, and months so many things happen. Blade eventually becomes Theo's champion, always watching out for her. The only negative thing I could say about this story is Theo's naivity and how long it took her to realize she loved Blade and wanted to spend the rest of her life with only him. But it wasn't enough to lower my five stars. If you are looking for a rich piece of historical fiction with a wonderful romance try CHERISH THE DREAM.

This is a bittersweet review.

This is one of my favorite genres and I wanted to love this story, but I has not. In its defense I will say that the fault was entirely mine: I don´t remember a cover and a synopsis more accurate than these ones.

I think it was a bit dated for my taste, while I was reading it I keep thinking about these old westerns I saw when I was younger (which I loved!) where the hero was tough and serious and the heroine was fragile and always at the edge of fainting with her hand in her forehead and her eyes closed. ;)

As there are not many reviews available for this story, and as I do not want to take away anyone´s desire of read it, my advice would be that if you like the cover- though you would have to put the hero a mustache ;) and if the blurb attracts you, you should give it a try. And don´t forget to read Linda´s review, for a lovely POV.

Thanks for the recommendation, Linda. Despite everything, I loved our chats and I learned a couple of new things. ;)

A great romance, full of love and history. It was so heart breaking when Teddy's twin brother died. Blake and Teddy are a perfect match.
