Two days after police informed Kat’s father is dead, he came back to their home to kill his family. He succeeded to kill Kat’s mother but then when he came after Kat, hunters helped her. Three years later Kat still is in search of the one who turned his father, alone. So the hunter commander finds her and made her decide to join the hunters or he makes her forget about everything. Of course, she decided to go with hunters. So he handed her to Lord Darius of House Tarrick, to be trained. She and Darius have something in common! Their parents were killed by one person.
I was indifference toward Darius and I disliked Kat. She was too hotheaded and stubborn for my taste! I couldn't tolerate her! And the push/pull in this story didn’t really work out for me! Told in dual POV, 3rd person (except the epilogue that is in someone else’s POV). It’s the first installment in the "Ashwood Red" series with characters crossover from "Beautiful Monsters" (that I loved so much) but you can read this one without reading that series. Hope you like it more than me!

Okay srsly, it'll be out Jan 29. It's my toe dip into m/f PNRs. If m/f isn't your thing (I know for a lot of my fans it's not) that's totally fine--you don't need to read this series to understand Matthew's story. However...a whooole lot of BeMo characters have cameos. This book takes place during Captive's timeline.

I read this entire book in one sitting. No shame.
It was wonderful to be able to see more into the hunter side of the BeMo world, and I may have squealed a little bit every time a character from Matthew’s story came into play. If you’ve read Captive, Sire, and Broken,
Darius…I adore him. He’s so young and cute, such a huge difference from the put-together incubi we see in Captive, Sire, and Broken. It makes him all the more relatable to see his control snap, or his darling lack of experience in certain areas. He had me laughing in the second paragraph of his first chapter!
I was a little worried about Kat and the potential she has to get lost in herself, but I’m so excited to see more of her (we will be seeing more of her, right Jex? :P ) and hopefully watch her develop as a hunter. It feels like that girl is destined for big things.
We can’t forget about Tane. I love Tane. Or rather, I love to hate Tane. Any time he gets put in his place, which happens delightfully often, I can’t help but grin and laugh. You would think it would get to his ego eventually, but I supposed that would imply his ego has limits. Which I sincerely doubt it does.
I love a book that can make me physically react, and it felt like I was constantly laughing at some shenanigan or another or holding my breath, worried about who might live or die. A fantastic addition to the BeMo universe, I'm excited to see what comes next!

A lot to impact here. I don't know where to begin. I want to thank Jex for giving me the arc in exchange for a honest review.
I want to start of this review saying that I read m/f erotica. I do. And the ratings I'm giving this book is not because I have something against m/f.
The book is about a girl name Kat who witnessed her mother's death by the hands of her father, who she finds out is a vampire. She then dedicate her life to take down vampires until she is recruited to join the Hunters. There she meets Darius. Darius is a social incubus, who really, really wants to be a warrior. They fall in love almost instantly and argue about sex and who gets to have with who. Oh and she really wants to kill "The Pale Man."
OK, so I really enjoyed the idea of Kat 's personality. What do I mean by that? Kat is "fearless" and "strong". This was basically said over and over and over and over again by countless characters. She was basically a Mary Sue....meaning that as soon as she showed up, most of the characters treated her like she was special. She got special treatment.....even though she didn't follow basic hunter rules! Seriously???? Her entire character was a trope that I'm tired of seeing in books.
My other issue was on the dialogue. It felt rushed. There was a moment where Kat said maybe two things and the people that were talking to her were like...." wow...she challenges authority. " No. She is annoying and rude.
Weird descriptions . Meandering and sauntering to describe walking into a room....
Darius....his character was a step up above Kat. He had some interesting....possibly in-depth story potential . There's a lot to unpack with him. There things that he partook in that I thought was interesting and I wished it wasn't glossed over. His background is interesting. His relationship with Tarrick and Tane is fascinating. I really enjoyed the dynamics between them. I really hope we get more from him. I didn't care much about his relationship with Miss perfect, but he piqued my interest.
The insta love between Darius and Kat was so cringe worthy and so unbelievable. I didn't buy it. Almost as I didn't buy that Kat was an 18 year old.
Oh....did I mention that Kat's emotional reaction to things are weird? Because they are!
Dawn!!!! I love her!!! She was delightful and the best friend I would love to have. I'm really curious about her story. And if you read BeMo...you know what she is.
Can I just say that Tane was one of the best thing about this book. He's consistent with his personality that's for sure.
It was fantastic to see Tarrick and how kind and loving her treats Darius warmed my heart.
Ok...so the sex. "Wet folds" I cringe Every Time that was mentioned. But it was hot!
All in all, I did not enjoy this as much as BeMo. I thought the writing was awkward at some parts, I thought one of main character was incredibly insufferable, I thought the romance happened far too quickly and thus not believable, I thought the Hunters were a disappointment, but I do think that there were parts in this book that is important to the series. We learned a lot. It was stil enjoyable. The fighting scenes were well written.
This review was difficult for me to write because I see ton of good reviews. And I love Jex! I 'm a huge fan. And I don't want to be hated lol.

What a wonderful trip back into the Beautiful Monsters realm.
This book focuses on a fiery and stubborn Kat, and the more eloquent and refined Darius, although things are not always as they seem.
Excellent job once again by Jex Lane in this story that kept me so ensconced, that I didn't put it down until I was finished. Looking forward to more! Thank you!

I’m so sad I didn’t like this.
The author’s other series, Beautiful Monsters, is one of my favourites so when I saw there was another series of books set not just in the same universe but around the same timeline I was really excited.
So going in with that in mind I was pretty disappointed.
I knew this book would be paranormal romance, which is a genre I like, but I was very underwhelmed by the romance part. I didn’t understand the instant attraction of the two main characters Kat and Darius – instant lust, fine, no question, but the way they latched onto each other didn’t feel like it had any buildup or reason, especially from Darius’s side.
Aside from that the romance was entirely predictable, which I wouldn’t have minded except it didn’t feel unique at all. I felt like I had read all of the setups and basic gist of scenes before It lacked the personal spark that would have made these scenes feel new and fresh, the spark that I expected as it is very prominent in the author’s other books, but instead it just felt like a simple repetition of tropes and stereotypes.
The characters in themselves were fine and would have appealed to me a lot had the focus been a little different. Darius and especially his role as not just being in charge of finances but also fashion of the household would have been super interesting but that was only mentioned in side sentences – instead the focus is on his unreasonable attraction to Kat and how he has troubles dealing with it.
Kat was a good character, even though I was very surprised and a bit uncomfortable to find she was only 18. I liked her for the most part, especially how brave and assertive she is and how she questions incubi society and customs There were some weird little side sentences or paragraphs that seemed to not fit in with her personality at all, which threw me off Again, the focus was on her attraction to Darius and how she handles it with a side of her acclimatization to the world of incubi and being a hunter.
Which brings me to another thing: for a book mostly told from the POV of someone who wants to kill the vampire responsible for the death of her parents…. There’s very little vampire hunting. Or preparing for vampire hunting. Sure, Kat gets training, but it feels more like a minor side plot, and it feels like nobody tells her anything about what’s going on. I really would have liked to read more about the day-to-day work and training of a hunter.
I also expected the overall plot to be more revenge focused, or at least for the book to have a revenge arc that ties up the beginning and end, but it kind of…. simply didn’t. Ultimately it was very inconclusive.
What I liked was the setting, all the different paranormal and mystical creatures and the new and refreshing and unique take on them which made me love the author’s other books so much. The world-building isn’t exaclty expanded in Dark of Night, but I found the new small details and glances into different angles of seeing this world very interesting.
I also liked many of the side characters, especially the members of Ashwood Red, the team of hunters Kat joins. They were all intriguing and I’ll definitely keep watching for their books!

Ohmigosh I’m gonna be honest, I wasn’t expecting this to live up to the Beautiful Monsters series, but it totally did! Jex Lane- how do you do it?? I loved Kat and Darius’ characters, and I had so much fun seeing there dynamic with Hatcher’s we already met (Tarrick!!). Can’t wait for the rest to be released!

I binged ¾ of this book in one sitting on a work night and only went to bed because I knew I was working 12 hours and I needed the end of this book to be my reward for making it through the day. Totally had a book hangover all day and couldn’t wait to get home and finish the book that night. Thank you Jex for giving me a great reward system ☺ this book landed right beside Captive, Broken and Sire on my favorites shelf.
Dark of Night is set in the same universe as Beautiful Monsters (BeMo) but focuses on a young Hunter named Kat and gives us a very different view of Ashwood and it’s hunter academy. This story is a true romance and we get our HEA or at the very least a HFN. Kat is a strong, fierce independent female hunter who catches the eye of Darius a social incubus. Both Kat and Darius have some communication issues and misunderstandings and it was immensely entertaining to watch their relationship growing pains. I laughed, I yelled and I was constantly on the edge of my seat.
Characters from the BeMo series show up throughout the book. I love a good cross over where I get to see my favorite series characters play a role in the spin off. So of course I bounce in my seat and squeal with glee when Tarrick makes several appearances. Of course Tane makes several appearances as well and oh that incubus is one I love to hate. Tane and Kats interactions are some of my favorite parts of the book. You’ll have to read Dark of Night to find them for yourself.
Overall, the world building, plot and character development is exceptional. Jex Lane pulls out all the stops to even provide reviewers with a well edited, ready to roll ARC. From this author you can expect a story that will suck you in, fulfill your romance happy feeling requirements and sustain your need for action and adventure. With Jex and her writing, there is never a dull moment.

The dark of night is an M/f novel which is a part of (ashwood red series)
The main characters of the novel are kat and Darius. Kat is the character that had initially appeared in "sire of BeMO"(just one scene)

The Novel starts of with a bang! We see Kat's parents dying in front of her eyes as her father sucks the life out of her mother.
We get to see a New side of vampire which is cruel and dark. The way the pale vampire robbed Kat's dad away from her. We get to see why most hunters hate vampires. I realised that its not just incubus who has the capacity to be cruel but also vampires.
Kat unlike a normal teen of her age did not get scared of vampires once she got her memory back, instead she desired to get revenge against the vampire who killed her parents. She is fearless
We get to see a new side of Lock the way he looks after wellbeng of kat and literally becomes her mentor/guardian.
Kat on other hand, unlike silva and other hunters is not disciplined there are many instances where she has been reckless and stubborn
Kat is a type if person who makes decisions on her impulse unlike other hunter cops like silva, Prescott or hiroto for ex: when kat was asked to stake a vampire and she had see her father caged and unconscious for the first time after that fateful night made her leave that place on impulse when she was overwhelmed with emotions
Darius and kat love story was cliche. I personally felt that the she fell in love too soon even after trying to control her lust at start.
Darius on the other hand is a social incubus who is 71 years old. He has insecurities at times and feels ashamed for not being a warrior vampire .
In short kat is a reckless and impulsive hunter and can be un-disciplined yet she is fearless when faced with danger and stubborn

We get to see a New side of vampire which is cruel and dark. The way the pale vampire robbed Kat's dad away from her. We get to see why most hunters hate vampires. I realised that its not just incubus who has the capacity to be cruel but also vampires.
Kat unlike a normal teen of her age did not get scared of vampires once she got her memory back, instead she desired to get revenge against the vampire who killed her parents. She is fearless
We get to see a new side of Lock the way he looks after wellbeng of kat and literally becomes her mentor/guardian.
Kat on other hand, unlike silva and other hunters is not disciplined there are many instances where she has been reckless and stubborn
Kat is a type if person who makes decisions on her impulse unlike other hunter cops like silva, Prescott or hiroto for ex: when kat was asked to stake a vampire and she had see her father caged and unconscious for the first time after that fateful night made her leave that place on impulse when she was overwhelmed with emotions
Darius and kat love story was cliche. I personally felt that the she fell in love too soon even after trying to control her lust at start.
Darius on the other hand is a social incubus who is 71 years old. He has insecurities at times and feels ashamed for not being a warrior vampire .
In short kat is a reckless and impulsive hunter and can be un-disciplined yet she is fearless when faced with danger and stubborn

So first of all, I didn’t know what to expect. I mean other than the fact that last month I slammed through the three Beautiful Monsters books and then sobbed and walked around in a daze wishing I could re-enter the world. Yeah apart from that.
I heard another book was coming out but NOT the fourth in the other series. No worries. I pre-ordered and waited *patiently*.
Guess what! I’m as satiated and happy as a well-fed incubus right now. This book has got all the darkness and exotic otherworldly depth of Captive, Sire and Broken, but not so much heartache and severe pain. That’s fine by me. It’s still got all the tension and questioning I enjoy in a romance and the “pull you into the world” I’ve now come to expect from this author. Also not to mention a bad-ass heroine who appears to be human. “Appears” because anything could happen in this world and that’s what I love about it.
This book is completely stand-alone from the author’s other series and of its own series. I’m excited that there’s more to come and whatever Jex Lane writes has now become a must-read for me.

Ugh! This review is problematic for me because I LURVE Jex and her books. I finished this book about a few hours after I received it which surprised me because her other books took me some time to get through. There’s a bit of heft to her other books that this one didn’t have.
This Book is set in the same universe as the Beautiful Monsters series and is within the timeframe of the book Captive. You don’t need to have already read Captive, Sire, or Broken to enjoy this book but some characters do overlap and it’s nice to already have a handle of who they are.
The reason why I liked her other books so much is that everything is fleshed out so nicely and they have good pacing. This one doesn’t. Everything’s thrown at you at a super rapid pace in typical m/f romance form. I don’t want to say that it’s paced like a harlequin but it’s paced like a harlequin. It doesn’t have a story line exactly like one because it’s paranormal but the pacing is fast (you get the point). And it’s because of this pacing that this book lacks the character and world development necessary to make it stick the landing for me.
So the main characters in this book are Kat and Darius. Kat made me want to throat punch her on several occasions because she’s a brat, who knows nothing, does everything wrong yet gets treated like she’s the next coming. Some occasions I forgave because...she’s 18! Her life experience is within the scope of her tragedy but outside of that...her character is just empty. There was no growth with her. I needed to see her have some sort of touchable growth.
And Darius, that little fashion whore. I liked him, but he needs to grow into his incubus size balls. Not every man is a full on alpha, but bejeebus dude, you’re almost 100 years old and somehow an 18 yr old girl/woman is thwarting you? Uh, o-Kay.
Tane’s character was consistent I can’t wait to see when he gets to meet his match. And surprisingly Terrick was all about showing his softer side in this one.
For the Side hunter characters you have:
-A big dude that’s surprisingly agile
-The handi-capable one that has to use alternative tactics to do the same things as the other hunters
-The douchey leader with a hidden past
-The fun chick
-And the one that’s the peacemaker and everyone’s buddy
As for the world building, as I mentioned I’ve read her other books (where the building is spectacular) and we hear and “see” on occasion about hunter training academies but we didn’t really get much in the world building of it. You don’t really get a good grasp of the scope of what’s supposed to be the best hunter academy or the hunters training. Kat is supposed to be working on becoming the best hunter but her training is almost non-existent.
As per usual the sex was hot, there was a part I found laughably ridiculous because at some point a chick is gonna pass out (7 TIMES?!?! Come on J? Really? 7 Times? Reeeaaallllyyyy?). All in all it’s a solid read (with room for some improvement) that will keep you reading the whole way through.

I want to cry so baaad....I just couldnt deal with Kat she was so annoying and i didnt get why Darius would fall so fast for her.. I reallly wanted to love this book since Beautiful Monsters is my favorite series of all time! I read m/m and m/f paranormal series and this one just felt like another cliche one. I gave it a high rating because I loved seeing the BeMo world from a different perspective. The side characters actually interested me more e.g. Dawn, Lock, Chase... I would love to read more about them. Overall it wasn't bad but it lacked some depth to the main character and to the romance.

Oh Ashwood Red, of House BeMo, I love you so.
I have yet to read a book by Jex Lane that I didn't like, and this one can be filed right along the rest: under mah faves.
If you're a fan of adult paranormal/fantasy, here's why this book/series is for you:
- The world building is expertly written: you'll find that there are so many facets and layers to the creatures/characters and worlds in this story, yet they're easy to follow, and a joy to read.
- Speaking of creatures & characters, you're bound to LOVE THEM ALL. Seriously, even the characters that I hate, I can't get enough of. I love the complexities of their personalities, their entertaining dialogue, and of course, their off-the-charts chemistry.
- Romance: there are hard fought battles HEA's and HFN's (happy for now's) which are always a great payoff to read. And I always find myself so in love with every character, that I'm always secretly hoping they'd just all have an orgy, hahaha! *drops that off in Jex's suggestion box*
- Pacing: the plot in each of Jex's books are consistently steady, with barely any slow moments; I never feel compelled to skim unlike with some fantasy/PNR books I've previously read. (And let's face it--it's par for the course to skim/have eyes glazing over when you have to read some fantasy elements that get interwoven into world building.) Nothing in the plot feels contrived, or unnecessary to the plot. Everything flows so well.
All the above being said, if you've never read her previous books, you'll still be able to pick this one up and read it as a standalone, and not be lost as to who everyone is, or what's going on. (Though I HIGHLY recommend that you read at least CAPTIVE after you've read this, as you'll see that there are characters that cross over and cameo, and that some of the events in this book sync up with that book.)
If you've read her previous books/series (BeMo = Beautiful Monsters) DARK OF NIGHT will have you eager to go back an re-read the series all over again.
This book is a wonderful start to a new(ish) series by Jex Lane, and I am waiting on the edge of my seat for book #2! And as always, I'm already ready to re-read all the Jex Lane things cause I just can't get enough of these characters! *swoons*

Without giving too much away, this story is about a girl who has everything torn from her but still manages to stand strong on her two feet. A strong female protagonist? Count me in!
What I did like in the story was the characters. Kat, one of the main protagonists, was definitely not like the female characters that are currently being written. She’s fierce, strong, says what she feels, and takes control. I was rooting for her immediately. Darrius, however, was not. I liked the role reversal. The good natured stumbling because he was totally out of his element.
I also love the fact that the minor characters in this book weren’t considered throwaways and were given personality and just enough depth to not overshadow the major players.
Also if you’re already a fellow Beautiful Monsters reader, just know that there are surprises in there for you as well.
Now what I didn’t like….it was too short and that was quite disappointing. The story was so well developed that I feel like it could have gone on for another 250 pages. However, I understood the timeline of the story and why it didn’t really need to be longer.
Now, my favorite character is Lock. There’s just something about the cowboy that I need to know more of. Pick up the book and her other series Beautiful Monsters you will not be disappointed.

A *very nice* addition to the Beautiful Monsters universe.
Here we have a kick-butt amateur vampire slayer brought in to become a pro. She’s after a specific vampire, but any vamp will do. But that’s only part of the story. Darius, who’s more of an administrator general all-around steward of General Tarrick’s estate, and *not* a warrior, falls for her. Although, it’s more than that. He’s an incubus and has needs beyond what she can fulfill.
This is all pretty interesting because while we’re getting the trope of the one-true-mate, it’s contradicted by the incubus need for more than one partner. And that I haven’t seen tackled in any of the PNR I’ve read (I might be reading in the wrong book stacks?). This is Jex Lane, though, so if you’re used to reading OTM (one true mate) PNR, take a walk on the wild side and check out another angle for it.
Kat is a terrific hardened young woman. She takes no crap from anyone. Even Tane. Love her, just for that specific scene. Yeah, I’m laughing. It’s perfect. She’s perfect. Brass ovaries. And is Darius worthy of her? Yup. This book nails it.

Dark of Night was a wonderful trip back to the Beautiful Monsters universe!
The story centers around Kat, a fiery hunter-in-training, and a social incubus, Darius, and their romance. I'm amazed at the up's and down's accomplished in this short read, especially between the two of them.
If you're familiar with the BeMo world, this story lines up with the first book of Matthew's story, Captive, and several familiar characters make an appearance (much to my delight!). If you haven't read Matthew's stories (that needs to change!), this is still a good introduction to that world as its own stand-alone book.
Combined the relatable characters, Jex has such a humorous way of writing that kept me engaged and wouldn't let me put the book down until I was done. The only downside was it left me wanting more! I would definitely recommend this story to anyone looking for a paranormal m/f romance!

Truly exceptional... I love everything that this author writes. She is incredibly talented and creates these amazing characters that you simply can’t help but love and even sometimes hate a little. And feel so incredibly sorry for *talking about you, Matthew*. And often, a shift between these emotions for these multi dimensional characters is not uncommon in Jex Lane’s books. My point is, amazing character development. Fantastic world building.
I was so happy to read about Darius and Kat, and their story is off to a great start! I really enjoyed reading more about these Hunters and of course, High Lord General Tarrick.

How can you not love a book that submerges you into another world where Vampires, Witches and Incubus all exist. The story starts by following Kat, a fiery tempered girl, who's world changes after a traumatic event and then is thrown into a new way of looking at the world. Hell bent on revenge she finds herself joining a Vampire Hunters group and meets Darius, an incubus Lord who shares her tragic past. All the while they're finding out how they feel for each other. So many unanswered questions and laugh out loud moments. I'll never be able to hear the word splinter and not think of this book. I could not put it down and can not wait to continue my journey with Kat, Darius and all the other Ashwood Red team.

This new M/F novel in Jex Lane's Beautiful Monsters PNR series has great character development, is steamy in all the right places, and makes you want more. There are appearances of some of the other characters from the original series in this book, which I totally loved, but new readers could start with this story and have no problems. It was really interesting to see what was happening to these characters during key plot moments, since the timetable runs parallel with her other books. I wasn't sure I was going to like Darius, after his brief scenes previously, but both characters were well written and there was plenty of depth to them. I was lucky enough to read an ARC copy of this, but I have also preordered the book and will reread this it many times, as I have all the others. Such a great read!

This book is a lot simpler in terms of twists and plot than the other series by Jex lane. Saying that it was still a great book, and you couldn't help but love the characters. Kat is feisty and strong willed which makes her believable and endearing. Darius is loving and kind and understanding whilst also being a bad ass even thought he isn't meant to be.
It was nice to see the other side of the characters we either love or hate from the original series, Tarrick, Tane, Lock, Cullip, it does not really change my opinion of them but still nice to see. I will definitely being adding this to my list of book that I keep coming back to. I can not wait for the next installment of this series and already and looking forward to and speculating about the different characters and their stories.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Jex Lane has done it again with the latest book in the Beautiful Monsters Universe. This one focuses on characters other than Mathew and shows us more of what goes on around Ashwood. It also gives us a M/F romance. She draws us in and builds a world that we wholeheartedly believe in and want to join. The seduction and sex is hot and there is an underlying plot that makes sense. This book stands on it's own if you haven't read Captive/Sire/Broken but I highly recommend you pick those up as well as Stone Sentinel My only complaint is now I have 2 more BeMo characters I want to know more about! I did receive an ARC copy in exchange for a review but am happy to give her another great review. I am an avid reader and can't get enough!

Jex has rapidly become one of my favorite authors the details and feelings in each character in her books are unbelievably fantastic.. I was so excited for Dark of Night and had every right to be..Hot headed Kat witnessed her newly turned vampire dad kill her mum at a young age and vengeance became all she cared about till she joins the Hunter corps...Lord Darius a social incubus is wealthy,handsome and desires Kat like no other...Witty and funny with some seriously hot sexy times and once again epic battles and fights..Another five star set in the BeMo's universe..

Okay, I admit it—I'm such a fangirl! You could probably write the phone book and I'd love—do we still have phone books?
Although, this is not the same as the first three and it did take a bit to adjust my expectations already knowing the world of the the other three novels, this novels stands on it's own merits.
I loved seeing this world from a different perspective and I loved getting a glimpse of hunter training and Tarrick's Academy. If I look at the other novels, what I do know for sure is that bigger things are coming for this series, so watch out BeMo fans. Jex is just getting started!

I’m a big fan of this author’s previous books in the Beautiful Monsters universe, they’ve been real page turners. High on tension, action and sexiness, with beautifully described characters and I’ve really cared about the protagonist.
Having said that, I struggled with this book. Even though Kat is a real ‘tough’ girl... I didn’t feel it. Nor did I quite see the attraction between the two main characters. Also not so fond of stories that base relationships on some outside force that brings two people together, like the trope about matehood that is often (ab)used in shifter books.
I liked Darius, the romantic interest, he isn’t typical at all. Kat is a bit less successful, like I said. Returning to Darius, it’s not often that the guys in paranormal romance aren’t typical alpha males and it’s such a cool idea with this reversal in roles. Kat is the fighter and Darius is the one to receive protection, I liked that. I just wish the author had succeeded a bit more in making me feel the feelings :)
I still have high hopes for the continuation of the Ashwood books as there are lots of interesting peripheral characters.
That’s my rather scatter-brained review. I enjoyed it just fine, not blown away and a bit disappointed but will continue to read and purchase the upcoming books.

Having said that, I struggled with this book. Even though Kat is a real ‘tough’ girl... I didn’t feel it. Nor did I quite see the attraction between the two main characters. Also not so fond of stories that base relationships on some outside force that brings two people together, like the trope about matehood that is often (ab)used in shifter books.
I liked Darius, the romantic interest, he isn’t typical at all. Kat is a bit less successful, like I said. Returning to Darius, it’s not often that the guys in paranormal romance aren’t typical alpha males and it’s such a cool idea with this reversal in roles. Kat is the fighter and Darius is the one to receive protection, I liked that. I just wish the author had succeeded a bit more in making me feel the feelings :)
I still have high hopes for the continuation of the Ashwood books as there are lots of interesting peripheral characters.
That’s my rather scatter-brained review. I enjoyed it just fine, not blown away and a bit disappointed but will continue to read and purchase the upcoming books.

Overall I enjoyed this book. The hunter cadet POV was a great take on things. 4 star rating only because I stumbled a bit getting into this one, but once I got over the initial difference in the feel of the story I was all in. I would definitely recommend this book!
It was heartbreaking when Kat saw Matthew with a stake in his chest and even more so when she was forced to face her father unexpectedly. Jex definitely knows how to pull our heartstrings and give us characters that really have to overcome a lot.
Kat and her refusal to read required material really cracked me up...especially with her amazement every time someone mentioned a fact and their exasperation over her lack of knowledge.
I’m SO glad Darius is such an important role in this book. I really feel for him with his desire to be like Tarrick...without even realizing how close he is. So many possibilities open up for his future and I really want to know more!

I was first introduced to Jex Lanes writing in the Beautiful Monsters books and fell in love with the story and characters. In this spin-off series within the same world and timeline did not disappoint. The characters are so relatable and funny. Even in this paranormal world filled with war and uncertainty, there is humor, seduction and some extra character backstory with familiar characters from the original series. I enjoyed Kat and Darius's power struggles and dancing around each other. The fact that the lead male Darius was strong with some major alpha energy yet was not a warrior was really refreshing to see. He had flaws, disappointments, and insecurities but was still such a strong lead male character. Kat was a great character and I had to remind myself a few times that she was only 18 in this book. So when she acted certain ways I reflected on my 18-year-old self and thought, yup Jex Lane nailed it. Headstrong, loyal to family and revenge, not listening to authority and doing it her own way, sounds about right. I can't wait for more installments to this series.
