My name is Argo Herrero. I was born under the banner of war. I'm ready to enlist, sign the contract to serve for ten years under the ally ranks. We're ready, me and my friends are. To leave this shit-hole country conquered by the totalitarians. I was born here. Now I'm ready to leave it behind. We're going to war.

The world is being conquered by the Megachine, a totalitarian regime commanding more than a billion drones. They are strong. Undefeated. Unrivaled. They have wiped out the ally drone force and now they are moving in for the final blow. First they took Europe, then Asia. With the help of the Chavistas, they conquered Latin America. The world is about to fall. I have to--need to serve--to fight for whatever freedom is left!

In a not too distant future war hasn’t been eradicated, but it has gone high tech as drones become war machines and the side with the most advanced, the most powerful and the most in numbers will begin to press their advantage and overwhelm the world. The Megachine is rapidly crushing all resistance to their totalitarian rule. The allies are being over-powered, their faith in their cause is weakening as their hope lay bleeding on the battlefield. What chance do human soldiers stand against the power of mechanical might?

Existing in the bowels of life, young friends will join the allied forces as soldiers, only to discover they were meant to be used as sacrificial lambs as more experienced and enhanced soldiers are used when victory seems likely.

Argo Herrero never meant to be a battle-tough warrior, he wasn’t cut out to be a fighter, but time and again he would demonstrate his ability to think and react, and those abilities would cost him pieces of his body, his humanity, but never his heart, the heart of a man fighting for freedom.
Pablo Andres Wunderlich Padilla tells a story of a dystopian world on the edge, poisoned by radiation, being robbed of life, pleasure and everything that makes life worth living. The rebellion will falter until one man gives his body for the ideals he believes in. TORRAGAMI is science fiction action and adventure that will rocket off the pages in an “in your face” tale of the hell of war, death and bloodshed against an inhuman force.

Get ready to white-knuckle your way through pages filled with emotional turmoil, uncertainty, jealousy, fear, heartache and finally dogged determination to go down fighting, to finally outwit the enemy. Could it be the Megachine is NOT the biggest dog in the junkyard?
Science fiction lovers take note: this is only the beginning of a new series that is out of this world!

I received a complimentary copy from Pablo Andres Wunderlich Padilla!

A rather fun read with interesting characters and action. And, my initial thought…. was justified. Thankfully. Let me explain.

Even though Argo Herrero and his fellow SLAV friends are educated doctors, they are tired of being under the thumb of the Megachine, and enlist in the rebellion. We are talking drones, air superiority, Orwellian type scenery. So, one could ‘naturally’ gravitate toward envisioning a Skynet -esq vibe. Not this loser. I went, for some reason, the Starship Troopers dynamic in my noggin’ – yeah, that is bugs and junk. And sure as shit – boom. Vindication, baby. This gives nothing away, really – but there are bugs AND drones, eventually, in play.

I wouldn’t really call this a coming-of-age, reluctant hero bit. Yes, Argo does start off lacking confidence. Yes, he does rise to the occasion. But, not, umm, naturally?

In this kick-off installment, you are introduced to Argo, Carmen – his love interest, and others. They head out to train to kill. They meet some interesting characters; salty veterans, scientists, and fellow soldiers (some enhanced). This illustrates the pecking order easily enough.

Action unfolds – some firefights, some quality deaths, etc. The set-up is a Two-Minutes-to-Midnight act for survival. And that is where all the action plays out.

I’ll stop to avoid giving away too much. The read is entertaining. It is a little slow, but once things get going….they get going quick. I look forward to seeing what unfolds in subsequent books.

“I’ve been intercepting their data for months from planet Earth. Most of their language and data is not understandable’

Handsome young physician Paul A. Wunderlich (aka Pablo Andres Wunderlich Padilla), born in Guatemala, is practicing Internal Medicine full time and how he finds time to pen such imaginative novels as his debut novel ETERNAL REDEMPTION: DARKNESS WITHIN, THE ACTOR (DISPOSABLE HEROES TRILOGY BOOK 1), UNIVERSE – a book of his poetry – and now TORRAGAMI: THE GALACTIC CRUSADE BOOK is mind boggling, but he writes so well that the time element is obviously not an issue. His choice of genre of sci-fi, dystopia, and satire – a difficult combination of subjects to stir together, yet Paul succeeds. His writings are a reflection of his sense of wonder.

In very typical Wunderlich style Paul opened his book UNIVERSE with the comment, ‘It has taken me quite a while to develop a Universe of poems formidable enough to be presented to your eyes, retina, and occipital lobe, where these rhymes and rhythms will be enveloped by your soul. Hopefully they will make you flow as if your soul were a cork, the words an ocean ebbing, rocking like the cradle of life.’ Now with his attention directed toward science fiction he gives the same sense of connection with his readers of fiction as with his poems.

Opening a new series such as The Galactic Crusade requires immediate attention form the reader n order to acclimatize to the events sand odd names ahead, and Pau does that well as he opens the story – ‘“Don’t do it! Go, and you’re as good as dead,” says Mario, looking suspiciously from side to side. The halls are empty. But even empty halls have open ears. “Argo, you know how things are. You know ÆTAS has no hope. The hegemony was stripped from its drones during the Multidrone War, and you know as well as I do that war is won with drones— and the Megachine has more than one billion! All is lost. There is no hope. Best thing you can do is shut up, do your work, and keep your head down. The war will end soon anyway. ÆTAS is weakened beyond hope.” Mario is right on one account: the Megachine is powerful. Its power is not the product of luck. Its power came from the confederation of China, North Korea, and all their conquered lands, including the whole of Latin America, all the way from Mexico to the Patagonia. Those old enough to remember back in the day say the third world war was apocalyptic. It started in the year 2034 and ended in the year 2045. Most believe the war never ended. It just began a new phase. The phase of world domination on behalf of the prevailing side. The nuclear bombs rained down during those harsh years. Nuclear blasts and mushroom clouds governed the earth. That’s when nuclear winter hit, the sky was blacked out, and the temperature plummeted. The United States, the great hegemonic power at the time, was too distracted defending Western Europe. That’s when Leonardo Chavez, with the help of a drone army supplied by China, took advantage and conquered Latin America in a single blitzkrieg. The battle that conquered Latin America didn’t even last a month. That was in the year 2045, right at the end of World War III. Afterwards, that bastard Chavez baptized his new conquered land as SLAV: Socialized Latin America under Venezuelan rule. Later that year, Chavez pledged himself to the Megachine, and thus the confederation became global.’

Paul provides a synopsis to map out the storyline: ‘Conquered. Oppressed. Off to become the hero. Or so I thought. It’s the year 2095. The third world war rages on. The confederate states of the Megaschine advance to impose their relentless totalitarian regimen on the world. If nobody stops them, our freedom will end. The allied powers have fled, the remainders of which have joined forces to create ÆTAS to confront the Megachine threat. My name is Argo Herrero. I’m one of the millions of unfortunate souls born under the banner of war, in one of the countries conquered by the Chavistas, who have pledged their loyalty under the Megachine threat of annihilation. ÆTAS is recruiting. They say the balance between defending freedom and utter destruction is tilting in favor of total annihilation. We can wait for the Megachine to take it all. Or we can migrate north to join ÆTAS to fight against the advancing menace. My best friends will come with me—they are the only family I have left. We’re going to war to win or lose it all!

Powerful richly atmospheric and scientifically sound writing such as this is what we have come to expect form this fine physician novelist. Bravo!

This is a six-star book!

I learned about this book on Goodreads and read it using Kindle Unlimited. This book is amazing! It combines the best elements sci-fi has to offer. It starts as Starship Troopers, becomes RoboCop, and finally morphs into Gundam. I enjoyed every second I spent reading it with only minor complaints. I can't wait to read the next two books. The rest of my review will contain spoilers.

The Good.
Nearly everything!

It starts strong with Argo's mouth watering for cooked church pigeon or rat tacos. Gotta love the cuisine in the future.

The squad and platoon assignments. A popularity contest at its best.

Referring to his bowels producing "liquid mayhem" was hilarious.

Argo's hatred for Gabriel. The man was just better than him, but haters gotta hate.

All combat was exhilarating. The body count was high. The PTSD was visceral. I loved all fights, especially the early ones when Argo was more pathetic.

The evolution of warfare involving drone hacking. That will soon be a reality. It was great seeing it used here.

Justar's jealousy of Argo's enhancement. It's always sad when the longstanding champ is dethroned. His resentment was realistic.

The Bad.
The first chapter kept switching between whether Argo was eating pigeon or rat. It looked like the author changed his mind but didn't catch all the needed corrections.

The only real problem I had was Carmen. She was too perfect in every way. She was smarter, a better shot, a top leader, an amazing boxer, etc. Yet, she was still the most beautiful. She was also very level headed. She's very mature and accepting of Argo having sex with everyone. She had no flaws, so I hated her as a character. With a book with such a high body count, it's a shame she wasn't one of them.

The Technical.
This book is written in the first person present tense voice.

The is a lot of violence and profanity.

The book wasn't formatted, so it reads like a manuscript.

A book with a split personality

This book starts out with a grim dystopian future that I have normally avoided by choice. But it sucked me in with the depiction of basic training. While thankfully when I took Basic the cadre weren't shooting us, nor did they force us to beat each other unconscious there were parts that Were familiar. And as far as food was concerned the MRE's that many say mean "meals rejected by everyone" or "meals rarely eaten" would be Haute cuisine in comparison. Even the C-rats I started with (Vietnam era canned rations pretending to be food) would be much better.
The ethos of always protecting your Battle Brother rang true as well.

The book makes a major change 2/3 of the way to become nearly a different genre. That part has some interesting aspects, but IMHO the author leaves you hanging with an incomplete finish. Especially since the protagonist points it out! I haven't decided whether to read the next book yet...

Excellent beginning to a new series

I liked Argo’s character arc from South American poverty (even though he’s a Doctor) to soldier in a foreign land. As the war progresses he loses his humanity, literally and figuratively.

Some annoying editing errors and continuity breaks cost it a star.

Good sci if story

I enjoyed the different story, I don't usually read about this type of story but it was interesting to read about wars and space in this story. I would read more from this author going forward since I enjoyed this book.

Really good story

I was expecting just another end of the world story with little plot and no imagination but was pleasantly surprised to find the opposite. Good work deserves praise and this book has a right to some

This story follows a reluctant hero trying with his friends to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic Earth. Together they flee their homeland and join forces fighting it. You see the protagonists train hard and grow into their new role even as globally the situation continuously worsens. A sudden shift in plot changes everything except the need to fight on. The books ends with hope for a brighter tomorrow but not without scary problems looming over the horizon!

A rare book with no redeeming qualities. The plot is rushed and incoherent, the book filled with clichés instead of characters and with even the protagonist having no depth. On top of that the book is horribly sexisme and racist.

Bueno, pues el libro es malo. Fin.
