SMAFU - SoulMates
SMAFU-SoulMates is a bittersweet, real-life, romantic story of growing apart, growing up, and growing (or not) into the person you always dreamed you could be.
This “prequel” to the acclaimed and much-loved, SMAFU – Situation Married, All F’d Up, can be read as a standalone novel. The characters’ ages, stages, and concerns may be different, but Cherisse is Cherisse and will simply never change, Darling. When she takes you on as one of her pet projects, your life will never be the same.
Jake, a journalist, and Jen, a bestselling YA author, were once the perfect couple, or so Jake thought, until Jen decided she’d had enough. Twenty. Years. Later.
Marriages built solely on youthful dreams, may not turn out the way we hope. The beliefs we built as children may not hold up as we age, mature and begin to find our own identities: Can you ever really go back home?
This is a story of growing up, realizing what we want out of relationships, and most importantly… what we want out of life. Can divergent paths reunite down the road? Can we re-discover what once set our souls on fire? Can Jake ever learn how to dance? Will Jen EVER get a decent cup of coffee?
But most importantly of all: Will the worldly and shockingly randy ninety-year-old Cherisse develop a blend of tea strong enough to wake Jake up and make him see the light?
Fans of Graeme Simsion (Rosie Project and Best of Adam Sharp), Nick Hornby “Juliet, Naked,” Jonathan Tropper (Book of Joe, How to Talk to a Widower), Nick Spalding’s “Love” series, and Robert Bryndza’s Coco Pinchard books . . . will feel right at home here.

EM Bosso has always loved writing, so the story goes, but until recently his life went on a myriad of odd and strange directions. This may well account for his unique perceptions and ability to build characters that relate on an emotional level.
His first true writing endeavor, although loved and locally a success, caused much pain for his parents as they sat in the high school dean’s office trying to explain that underground newspapers are covered under the first amendment and that censorship should be frowned upon. Sadly, civil rights such as freedom of speech end at the High School doorway when you are only 17.
Undaunted, but really more focused on a budding baseball career, EM continued to practice his writing skills on any lovely lady that would accept his literary attention. For what greater purpose is the written language than to woo women?
The path from love letters to a full blown novel was wrought with false trails and roadblocks. His path took him from a shoulder injury that ended his baseball dreams to a varied number of unique but questionable jobs and of course marriage and children.
Where do his idea and beliefs come from? During his varied careers he has been a shoe salesman, nuts and bolts stacker, telephone company representative, computer system designer, youth minister, lobbyist for disabled Americans, business banker, VP for a large US bank, stock broker and an independent financial advisor. All of which built a knowledge base of human behavior and experience that becomes grist for believable and relatable characters.
If you ever sit down and have the opportunity to ask EM Bosso why he writes (strongly recommend you bring him a strong cup of coffee if you want him to like you) you’ll find the answer has little to do with money or sales. He’ll proudly tell you one of his greatest accomplishments came from his first novel SMAFU (Situation Married All F’d Up) when he received his first reader email. When a “fan” took the time to thank him for writing a book that quite possibly saved her marriage he knew the book was a success even if it never sold another copy.
His Novel FBoM (Foundation for the Betterment of Man) from the Eyes of Justice series is making waves and starting conversations. He deals with a topic as sensitive as rape in a very graphic and honest way. It’s brutal and in your face; it makes you feel the emotions and fears, the anger and shame, and hopefully make you talk and take action. When you finish a novel by EM Bosso, he hopes you were entertained, but more importantly… he hopes he has made a positive change in your life.

SMAFU – SoulMates by E.M. Bosso is a fun read about relationships. Cherisse, a 90 year old that tries to teach Jake some needed life lessons, is my favorite character. She is a no nonsense tell it as it is lady. Cherisse takes Jake on as her pet project, nothing a hot cup of tea can’t fix. The story of struggles and love with a healthy does of humor! Plus there is a secret character you won’t want to miss!

This was a very nice, positive read.
I love the remarkable Cherisse... she certainly awakens a latent spirit of adventure with the way she lives life, age no barrier!
To talk about important life issues like love, marriage, dreams, success, failure with that underlying touch of humour is an art and the author got it right with this one.
The quotes were apt and something I enjoyed as well.
A very relatable, enjoyable read.

I read this not long after reading SMAFU. I was recommended to do it this way round even though this book is billed as the "prequel". To be honest though, I don't really think it matters which way round you read the two books. In fact, both work well as stand alone books just sharing the wonderful main character that is the whirlwind geriatric Cherisse!
Having met and loved Cherisse in SMAFU, I was eager to reconnect with her and hear more of both her own life and the pearls of wisdom she dishes out to others. In this book, the "others" are Jake and Jen. Childhood sweethearts, fairytale romance but divorced two (or is it three!) years since, having drifted apart; their life goals differing so much that it just wasn't working. Jen going on to be a bestselling author and Jake festering in journalism, writing obituaries, having never managed to write the next great American novel. They remain best friends however and, on first meeting, appear to still be connected emotionally.
Then Jen's Dad has a stroke and she has to return home to help her Mum. Jake's news is better as he is tasked with writing a piece on "Technology and the Elderly". He then has two chance meetings that threaten to inject a bit of fun into his dull, dreary life. Will these catalysts give Jen and Jake the kick to rekindle their relationship or, alternatively, allow the pair to move on?
One of the things I really loved about SMAFU was how real the characters are. The author has definitely got some wicked observational skills and probably a degree in people watching, so accurately some of the scenes come across. I also really loved Cherisse and, as already mentioned, I really yearn to learn more about her and, as this book ended, it was clear that there was so much more to uncover about her really rather rich life. I'm definitely looking forward to that.
It's a relatively easy read, it pretty much read itself to me, but it's not a light read if you get the difference. Not that it's heavy, but it's one of those books that can be read on many different levels. Certain elements will resonate more with some people more than others which means that it becomes a very different read for everyone depending on what parts gel.
There are also some really funny bits within the book. And squirmy bits and a few yukky ones too. It's a whole emotional roller coaster reading-wise but it also very balanced and flows very well. Some of the one-liners had me in stitches.
Apart from the quite important whole relationship / life advice contained within the pages, there's also a really rather neat and important message contained within. Yes, Laser Show is the best Red Sox 2B ever and thoroughly deserves his place in the HoF. If you take nothing else from this book, please take this at least!

I think we all need a Cherisse in our lives; a person who has lived but is able to give great advise.
This is a great feel good book about a couple who were together from a young age, married for a twenty years, divorced for three but still remained friends.
Jen, a published and successful author has to go to visit her parents after her dad has a major stroke.
Jake, as a regular column in his local newspaper about deaths but little do people realise that he's been writing a novel for the past twenty years.
Jake is given a task to write a piece of the older generation and technology. A chance meeting with Cherisse changes his life forever.
Within the book EM Bosso talks about Fairy Tales: his analogy of The Beast, being a person who lacked self confidence and it was only when he finally let someone in, that he found love. I think a lot of us can identify with the lack of self confidence stopping us living our lives as we would wish too.
There are a few sex scenes which flow well within the book.

An enjoyable, fun read told from two different sides of an ex married couple. Enter Cherisse, a 90 year old dynamo with advice for all, and the world starts turning, being shaken up and made sense of. This book is an easy read and describing it as ‘a light read’ may sound rude, but it isn’t meant to. I wanted to read on, to follow the well-developed characters, as the book unfolded, and there was nothing heavy or unsettling in it. The story changes direction midway and I found my preconceived ideas of where it had been going, change direction. The story held my focus and I enjoyed the comparative views from each character. I really enjoyed the quotes at the beginning of chapter. The book is well-written and feels real, several parts have been highlighted as E M Bosso puts into words feelings which I haven’t been able to explain before. And the ‘sex scenes’ - well.... realistic! Thanks for the chance to review this TBC Reviewers group!

I really enjoyed this book, its humour shines through while it still gives you a cold hard dose of realism. Cherisse, as in SMAFU, shines through as the leading light and I simply love her: her naughty but nice nature really reminds me of the cheeky side of my own grandmother who simply loved to shock the youth of today whom she deemed to be far too boring! Jake and Jen were very real world and had qualities and faults that I'm sure most of us can relate to. The story is told through their perspectives and in this way, we see what they could not see for themselves. Fun and thought provoking, this was a great read.

This is a solid four star book. Although this would be classed as an easy read that doesn’t mean there isn’t depth to the story or that the characters are twee. In fact it’s the well rounded characters that drive the book, hold your interest and keep you engaged. Sweet, thoughtful and thoroughly enjoyable.

This book will stay with me forever!!!!! Cherisse has a special place in my heart, I love her character. She is my favourite female fictional character by a mile. I could relate to the story and I'm sure everyone else will when they read it. The story pulled at my heartstrings but most of all it made me laugh from beginning to end. This author must have a fantastic sense of humour because it shines through in his writing.

SMAFU - Soulmates
Soulmates is the ‘prequel’ to SMAFU and can be read as a standalone novel. Even though this is advertised as the prequel, I think they can be read in either order.
Whichever order you choose, you’ll be treated to the formidable Cherisse; a 90 year old shining star with a lot to say! I absolutely love this character, she is fantastic! EM Bosso writes in such a way that you can’t help but be part of the story, experiencing the feelings and emotions of the characters! It took me on a real emotional roller coaster and I loved it!
I totally recommend giving this a read and I’m hoping there’s going to be more from Cherisse in the future! Four fabulous stars from purplebookstand!

This is a solid effort by the author. Once again, Cherisse is on hand to save the day, or perhaps I should say the life, of a man who's been stuck in a rut for the better part of 20 years. It's a romantic comedy, although I thought this one leaned more to the romance and less to the comedy. There are some funny parts, don't get me wrong, Jake's obituary column has its moments, but this book centers more on the idea of finding a soulmate. No surprise, I suppose, given the title.
The writing is solid, the characters are believable, and you'll recognize the style if you've read the other book in this series. (It doesn't really matter the order you read them, by the way, they stand alone just fine.) I was hoping for a few more twists and turns on the way to soulmate nirvana, but this story was a bit more linear. That's the thing that gives it 4 stars for me instead of 5.
So, if you enjoy romantic comedy, especially one with a charismatic older character like Cherisse, this is a good book you'll likely enjoy. It's not my usual style that I read, but I still liked the book anyway, which is always a good sign of the author's ability.

SMAFU Soulmates by E.M. Bosso - a review
This is an allegedly light-hearted and non-serious novel about Cherisse, a character in the original novel of this series, but it is as much - if not more - about the people around her as it is about her reputedly amazing life and memories. Around her presence are woven love stories of an inspiring and wonderful sort; I might have wished to have Cherisse’s own memoir (the device whereby the other cast members are introduced) set out in its own right. As it is, we have to make do with hints, titbits and sly winks to so much left unsaid.
But that’s OK too. The novel is good, well-written (I will here admit that I was allowed a pre-print copy, and whilst there were typos, that’s all they were) and highly entertaining. It also belies a deep understanding of human nature, and this is perhaps where it scores over many other, similar, romance tales. Whilst everything goes well and there are no major issues for the protagonists to overcome, you still get a very strong feeling that these are real, rounded people, not stock characters, and thus the reader’s involvement with them is all the easier to achieve.
Certainly recommended - an easy four stars.

Having never previously read of this author’s work, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Unfortunately I hadn’t realised that this was Book Two in the SMAFU series, but this did not in fact impact on my enjoyment of reading this story.
The story is one that will stay with me for a while. Whenever I thought I knew where I was being taken as a reader, we changed course. The term ‘soulmates ‘ is used often in our society, but how many of us truly know what it means yet alone be fortunate enough to have found one of our own? Cherisse is someone that everybody should have in their lives. Eccentric, delightfully flirtatious and wise beyond even her 90 years. The passionate scenes are described in detail, but not gratuitously. I absolutely recommend this book as it is not your usual romance novel. Far from it in fact. I am off now to get Book One...... and maybe I can find my soulmate.

another book filled with love, laughter and the never to be forgotten Cherise.
I loved this book every bit as much as the first one and can't wait to read about Cherise's adventures in further books (fingers crossed).
There is always such an honesty with the way in which EM Bosso writes about the characters and their experiences that pulls you in and leaves you with feeling light and refreshed even when dealing with some tricky situations.
