HORIKOSHI Kouhei Name (in native language): 堀越耕平 Associated Names: Kouhei Horikoshi
Born 1986 in the prefecture Aichi, Horikoshi first attracted attention in the second half of 2006 when he entered Shueisha's 72th Tezuka Award for Newcomers with his one shot "Nukegara" and made it to the final six, where he gained himself an "Honorable Mention". Various short stories in Shueisha's Akamaru JUMP followed over the years until he published his one shot "Oumagadoki Doubutsuen" in issue #2/2010 of Weekly Shounen JUMP.
Kouhei Horikoshi is a graduate of Nagoya University of Arts. He was previously an assistant to TANAKA Yasuki.
Such a weird volume. The first half was the fight between All Might and All For One, and it was kinda meh. I don't think Horikoshi is at the level where he can write these big showdowns convincingly. The action is jumbled, the dialogue is confusing and usually pointless, and the pathos level is so over the top that it's impossible to take these characters seriously.
Fortunately, the aftermath of this fight was much better. Some character development for All Might was very nice to see, and I liked the return to a lighter, more upbeat tone so much that I didn't even mind two entire chapters dedicated exclusively to exploring all of the students' rooms in the new dorm (which admittedly was VERY silly and didn't add anything to the story).
Overall, I feel like the series is losing some steam, but maybe the shakeups of this volume will provide an opportunity to add in something new and refreshing. I am finally caught up on all the officially released volumes, and I think I'm going to try anime now — I have a strong suspicion that the show won't have as many problems with jumbled and messy action scenes.
The higher the stakes in this manga get, the lower goes my interest and attention. Epic battles with the greatest hero and the greatest villain around? Ehh. The fight itself was all right and I could feel just how much greater these two were than anyone else anywhere, but on the whole it was just people beating up one another like in the shonen usually. I don't like All For One, I don't like Shigaraki - or rather, I don't love to hate them - and I don't care about their plans to rule or destroy the world just because they're nihilistic or sad. As of this writing, the current arc involves Shigaraki having turned into this kind of an all-destroying superman and I just can't wait for it to be done with so that we can get to the good stuff.
So what's the good stuff? It's the main characters growing and developing and improving. It's Midoriya coming to terms with his powers, Bakugo learning to be more personable Todoroki moving out of the shadow of his father... every single classmate is pretty great (except maybe Mineta), their chemistry is great, and I love reading about them and their school work. I wish the story was completely all about them, and did not try to add in the stock shonen stuff to mess with things.
That being said, this fight promises a lot of good on that front as well. All Might was basically running on fumes in this one - he was far stronger in his prime. And Midoriya is set to become even stronger. So it's a pretty great way to set things up for the future, show just how far he has yet to go, and how far he is going to surpass them. The fight itself wasn't so great, but the things it represents - the things it sets up for - are much better.
eta: GUH! That cover! It's beautiful and kinda makes me ache but it couldn't have been better as anything else for this volume. eta2: real edits toward the end of the review but, while I previously did not hide this liveblog (ilu RF) 'review' because of spoilery things, I'm hiding it now because my friend Keitorin is currently reading the manga and isn't caught up so everything below this is now hidden. love ya K, glad you're enjoying the series!!
(1) All Might v.s. All For One boss fight!!!! What more can I ask for!?
(2) plus All Might is Izuku's father figure, you are welcome to fight me over it!
(3) I'm laughing and crying over all the All Might + Izuku's scenes!!!
(4) All Might gives his best, and All For One is one hell of a scary bastard as well!
(5) I like the difference between All Might and AFO's philosophies on mentoring their pupils! While All Might wants to put more effort on mentoring Izuku in the future, AFO leaves Shigaraki to 'learn' by himself. HAHAHA!
(6) I love the aftermatch after this huge boss fight so much!!!!
(7) Victory always comes with a heavy price, don't forget this!!!!
PS: but I admit I first read some super cute boy's love fanfics about this series first before I got to the story canon! 🤣🤣🤣
*Reread 2/4/2021* "It has to be you, Kirishima." Ahhh the reaching out and Bakugo's smile when he says "you idiots." I cry. How can you not ship kiribaku after this volume??
This volume made me a little emotional. It's been so long since I've loved my hero. The fandom really ruined my perception of this series these last 2 years, but I'm happy to be able to reread it and see it a little differently, and fall back into it. It's weird because I'm finding myself caring about some characters a little more that I did before. I can't explain it, but I feel like I'm analyzing the storylines more and reading a little more critically now, which is making me like the series more. I can't wait to catch up.
Next up the greatest hero fights the greatest villain. Horikoshit hyped them up as much as he could, making it clear they are the power ceiling of the story. Although it was epic as a fight, it created 2 issues. First, it once again proved the villains are not threatening, since despite All for One planning for this day decades in advance, buffing himself with a thousand different superpowers and breaking the mental fortitude of Almight, he still lost fairly easily, without killing a single hero. What kind of a final boss can’t kill a single person even after planning ahead so much, and then just loses to the mindless punching of someone who had no plan at all? And the other issue is that this is the power ceiling. Horikoshit made the mistake of stating clear as day that there won’t be anyone stronger than them. You don’t do that in fighting shonen because you let the audience know it’s never going to get more impressive. Most people who like fighting shonen are power up junkies. They don’t want to be told it is never going to get more impressive. Even if it never does. Why do you think Beerus in Dragonball is never surpassed in power regardless of how many power ups Goku gets? So the power ceiling can never be reached. This was one of the main reasons MHA began to lose steam after this arc. They reached the power ceiling thus there was nothing to look forward to in the future. This was also why giving the promise “Deku is going to be the greatest hero” right from the start worked so well, instead of openly telling you he would be a powerless wage slave at the end. Everyone thought he would be as powerful as Almight and thus tolerated the boring training arcs.
The aftermath of the battle is once again reminding you why this is a stupid manga. Like a Saturday morning cartoon, the main villain is captured alive and sent to prison along with every other criminal. What for, it’s not like any of them is going to reform. Why not execute them when they are clearly irredeemable and spare yourself the trouble? It’s almost done so they will escape in the future and cause massive chaos, isn’t it? This was also where Almight could have died heroically and Deku could keep developing without the need of a nepo-daddy, thus slowly becoming the new symbol of heroism. But no, he survived because this is a Saturday morning cartoon, Deku didn’t grow one bit, and remained a nepo-baby. The only highlight we get in the aftermath is the notorious room event where they waste your time showing each others’ rooms. Woah, the one-trait character has a one-trait room that fits him perfectly. I didn’t see that coming. Don’t you now really care about these nobody characters instead of wasting your time reading about epic fights and high stakes? Obviously not, everyone was bored out of their minds while reading this crap. This is not character development, nor fleshing out. It’s a waste of time.
Showdown done, the real weight settles in. The number one hero is kaput. The villains now have a free playing field and no one is ready to take on the mantle of Main Protector.
But honestly? That's not the super important part of the volume. I got all weepy over Midoriya's mom and All Might's scene.
And the reactions of all the other students after meeting back up at school? It was sweet and complicated. :)
One can't help but love it when the mentor turns into a father figure. One for All : The No. 1 Hero, the Symbol of Peace and Midoriya's father figure slash mentor extraordinaire!
EN RESUMEN All Might y All For One se enfrentan nuevamente.
ASPECTOS POSITIVOS - La batalla entre All Might y AFO. - INKO MIDORIYA.
Ah, Mitsuki Bakugo. The woman the fandom is divided over. Is she abusive? Or is she comedic relief? We'll never know.
4/5 stars for this one because, while the first half is absolutely brilliant, the second half was too slow and way too long. I'm glad the bedroom extravaganza was shortened to less than an episode in the anime.
But, like...That epic fight and the EPIC bromance save (yes, BROMANCE. The people who ship them can go to hell because we need more touching friendships between young guys in popular media nowadays) between Kirishima and Bakugo boosts this from an even 3/5 to 4/5.
"A true hero saves not only their lives, but also their spirits...that's what I believe. The people in this world who can smile are always the strongest."
Great end to an awesome arc. Looking forward to see what the next one brings. I love All Might. Definitely excited to see what the next step in his life brings for him.
World: The art was pretty great this time with the huge fight. The world building was also on point with the status quo changing and new pieces and places coming into play. This really feels like the world is expanding and changing.
Story: Wow that end was great. Amazing fight, emotional impact, huge reveals and high stakes. The world is charged after this fight so it's wonderful and full of consequences. The next part is also fun with the change of pace and the ability to just laugh and breath. It's light and compelling cause it's the breath you take after that long breath we held since the camp. Good stuff.
Characters: All Might gets done good development as does Midoriya and the rest of the class. All for One is also pretty good with his banter. A lot of good character moments. Even the small one with Tsuyu was great.
A really wonderful end of an arc and a start of a new one.
The battle between All Might and All For One was something else! It was intense yet powerful and I seriously teared up when everyone started yelling encouragement to All Might even as he’s losing his power and showing the world exactly who he truly looks like physically—this type of stuff is what I look for and adore in the superhero genre.
And not to be outdone by all the drama but the dorm room tour and shenanigans of the teens was the best and most hilarious way to wind down and add levity to the situation they’re in now, not to mention they’re all just goofs and I love them.
My favorite volume so far!
‼️Content‼️
Language: bastard; gah; damned; damn; what the; heck; darn it; crap; piss; screwed; perv; darn
Violence: injuries and blood (PG-PG-13); fighting with weapons, superpowers, and hand to hand (PG-PG-13)
Sexual: a teen guy is a pervert; a girl’s shirt opens in the front all the way down to her stomach; a naked guy (nothing is shown)
EPIC!!! The first act of the story is over and now everything is going to be crazy. Loved the emotion that this volume brought to the table. Really utilized the weight of everything we’ve already seen to blow us out of the water!
Whew, this was a great and intense volume. I really can't wait to see this arc in the anime as well. It may be my favorite of the series thus far (the whole arc, not just this volume). Now to wait until next month for the next one.
Class 1-A’s rescue mission and an explosive battle between All Might and the villainous All For One will lead to an unexpected move and maybe the next heroic step. A (100%/Outstanding)
this was a really good one. I dare to say one of the best volumes so far. first of all, the panels are spectacular: in the first volumes yes, the drawings were good but only the batlles/main momenyts panels were eye-catching- in this volumes every single page was breathtaking. the plot was so engaging and catchy, I was so invested! I also really enjoyed the last chapter were we can see every character's room: it gives them more personality and characterisation, it was un to read as I remeber having fun watching it in the anime!
Overall this volume was okay. It had its good parts and its boring parts. During the fight with the villains, it was mostly predictable about what would happen next but as well it was interesting to read. Throughout the rest, it would have fun parts so that's what would help gain my attention again.
