This was kind of meh. The art is pretty, but the story has a been there, done that feeling to it. There really wasn't anything to set it apart. Leo is supposed to be burning with the need for revenge against Tenma for a childhood incident, but he's really not the evil villain he thinks he is. His bland personality doesn't work well for a guy thirsting to get back at the beautiful, clumsy, and sweet Tenma. I'll read another volume to see if gets better for me, but right now, it left only an impression of mediocrity. It's a quick read, it's pleasant enough, but it's not going to stick with me for the long haul.

This is a fun, short series! I look forward to reading more.

Young Leo had an experience that left him embarassed. That was thanks to a young Tenma. Shortly after that moment, he moved away. Now that he has moved back, he has come seeking revenge on Tenma.
What he doesn't expect, is that everything had already been taken from Tenma, and that she had grown up cute. He is in an opportunity to help her out. He does so, while also thinking he will still seek revenge in time.

I love how this story is progressing. Clearly the revenge from a 5 year old Leo won't hold up once he gets to know Tenma, right??

Good Enough for a cute romance manga, though the plot reminds me of many many other shoujo manga. Still, the guy is cute.

Hmm... I don't really care for any of the characters and Leo's reason for revenge is kind of stupid. I don't know if I'm interested enough to continue.

This manga was just average to me. I recently started another manga series with a similar premise and I felt the same about that one as well. Maybe this trope is not for me. Although Leo claims he's out for revenge, it's clear to me that he's in love with Tenmo. As a result I don't think I'll be shocked with the direction of this series. At this moment I'm not sure if I will continue with this series.

(Series Review)

Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romance Comedy
Content Rating: Teen (bare buttocks, light bullying)
Format Read: Paperback (purchased)

The Young Master's Revenge is a 4-volume story about the fine line between love and hate, and a boy who straddles it. The story follows a sweet but somewhat sadistic boy whose love for an oblivious but good-hearted girl has become warped after a mortifying childhood incident. After years away he returns to exact revenge on her for his embarrassment, but instead discovers the root of his protective and possessive feelings towards her and must work to become a better person. While some could have a little trouble with the way he initially bullies her, I thought this was a sweet young romance with strong characters, good humor, and an engaging plot drawn in a cute style. The end was a little weepy for me, but otherwise it was a rather adorable happily ever after.

Conclusion: If you enjoy short, lighthearted young romances with fun characters, a little light sadism, and adorable pig dogs, then definitely give The Young Master's Revenge a try! All 4 volumes are available now from VIZ Media.

This is another interesting looking series by Meca Tanaka. I have enjoyed everything by this mangaka that I have read so far and am looking forward to seeing how this series continues and how the characters will continue to develop. I hope the relationship between Tenma and Leo will continue to grow into a more positive relationship and he will start to be less negative.

A funny teen love/hate story that is currently mostly about an absurd revenge plan.

This is a cute and quirky romance that has fun upending typicaly shoujo conventions. Our hero, Leo, is highly flawed, and his love interest, Tenma, is so clueless as to be almost a cipher. Author Tanaka has fun with the two, however, creating a comedy that is as endearing as it is amusing.

Story: Tenma's family has owned a prestigious and wealthy department store chain for a century. When Leo was little, he was forced to be irrepressible Tenma's friend in order to curry favor for his father's burgeoning fashion business. While Leo did his best to keep up with the accident prone and boyish Tenma, she was quite too much for him to handle and she often got both of them into scrapes, including the notorious snapping turtle incident that left scars on his buttcheek. Now, years later, Leo returns to get revenge on the clueless heiress for his humiliation. His family is very rich and his father created a fashion brand. But what he finds is that Tenma's family went bankrupt, she's on her own, and she's still the clueless clumsy girl that he left. Can Leo get the oblivious Tenma to fall in love with him so he can promptly dump her and get his revenge for the snapping turtle incident?

If there is a shoujo cliche, Tanaka has fun with it. It was amusing just to figure out which trope is being roasted in each chapter. At the heart of the story is Tenma having to learn to care for herself and Leo being rather possessive of her to ensure that he has all the opportunities he needs to win her heart. Tenma is rather clueless that people were forced in the past to be her friend and doesn't understand their resentment toward her. She's also completely unable to deal with life now that she doesn't have servants doing everything for her. Leo, of course, manages to work a deal where he gets custody of her and she wants to do her best to make up for what she is learning happened in the past.

You'll find the usual cute-boy former fiance, mean girls, situations that throw the two together, and misunderstandings. It's how Tanaka handles them that makes this a treat of a manga. If anything, I'd say that Leo is the typical shoujo protagonist and Tenma is often like the male lead, if less idealized. But I like that the two are seriously flawed and mess up all the time.

The art is solid and the panels presented nicely. It's easy to follow the story and Tanaka captures the humor perfectly.

In all, the Young Master's Revenge is a cute and fun read and well worth the time.

The Young Master’s Revenge, Vol. 1 by Meca Tanaka ⭐⭐

It was okay...that’s about the best compliment I can give it. I really wanted to like it more since the premise sounded interesting - a teen boy wants to get revenge on a girl who wounded his pride as a child. I was expecting it to be slightly ridiculous, especially considering exactly what happened to cause him such embarrassment, but it ended up being totally unrealistic and way over-the-top.

First, I’m not a huge fan of the art style and the translation makes the dialogue feel a bit cringey in places (example: Leo using the word “drat” several times...what teenager do you know going around using that as his curse word of choice?)

Tenma was almost intolerable with her constant clumsiness. It’d be different if the situations were at least funny, but the almost slapstick nature of her faceplants didn’t really land with me. There are almost no adults around - Leo’s parents live somewhere else, Tenma’s parents are on an island somewhere, and even the president of the school leaves his responsibilities in the hands of his teenage son.

Tenma gets kidnapped and held captive for days by the school president's son at one point and it’s played off like a comedy, but again it didn’t land with me. I just couldn’t get into this story, I found my attention wandering constantly, and I may or may not have booped my Kindle screen several times to see how big of a percentage was left because boy, did it drag at times.

If I could have at least felt some chemistry between Leo and Tenma, it would have helped, but between the nonsensical shenanigans, the art style, the weird dialogue...oh, and don’t get me started on Tenma’s little stalker boy and the fact that Leo willingly gives him pictures of her. Unfortunately, I purchased all four volumes up front so I may force myself to continue. I mean, hey, maybe the story improves over time...or maybe I’ll just get a refund.

This review is for the entire series (4 volumes). Actual rating: 2.5 stars. Shojo manga is usually (but not always) just ridiculous cotton candy. Don't get me wrong. I love Shojo manga (take a look at my Manga shelf here on Goodreads), but this was just too much. Thank goodness the author didn't try to stretch it further because it just barely had enough for 4 volumes, let alone more. I do like the concept (it is, after all, kind of the epitome of the Shojo genre), but there were so many issues. The traumatic turtle incident would have held more weight if it hadn't been treated as a joke the entire time. Yes, this is supposed to be a romantic comedy, but I don't really take Leo or his mission seriously because of it and so there's no tension when he realizes his feelings. Tenma doesn't get off easy either. I know the "oooh, the rich are so different from us" trope in manga is a thing, but Tenma's naivety combined with her inability to do anything because she was a protected rich girl was just too much for me. Add to that and a character that's a pale imitation of Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club...there are just better series out there. But there are worst ones, too, I suppose.

This is the first book/manga that I've come across where I feel like I'm too old for the target audience. This manga follows Leo, who returns to high school with the intention to get revenge on Tenma for something that happened when they were children. Leo plays up to the flower boy image whilst being cunning and making sure that only he can torment Tenma. I think my main problem with this book is that it felt a bit too sinister. The characters feel like babies so I don't know if I should be cheering on for their romance...

Leo's plan is to get Tenma to fall in love with him and then he'll cast her aside. This is is a relatively common trope, but I think because of Tenma's innocent nature, it makes it feel that much more sinister. They are both 16 years old, but Tenma acts like a 10 year old because of her privileged upbringing, which makes me feel a bit uncomfortable against the mastermind that is Leo.

I will read volumes 2 and 3 because I have bought them at the same time as this volume, but for now I wouldn't recommend the series unless you are the target audience of a teenage girl.

It wasn’t a bad book but it certainly wasn’t all that engaging. Essentially a boy finds himself to be more wealthy than his (perceived) bully from when he was little. He is filled with the desire to seek revenge by…having her fall in love with him and then having him break her heart. Not a great plan but okay. Turns out the girl is remarkably stupid and doesn’t know how to do things on her own, forcing him to take her under his wing and help her financially. His only desire is to see that she is happy so that he can somehow ruin her life in someway unfortunately there seems to be a lot of problems with her. Her previous fiancé still misses her and the school bully wants her to himself. So Leo (there is a common theme of zodiac) and Tenma are now roommates and Leo vows that he will make her fall in love with him. So far all she considers him as a friend but agrees to the challenge saying she will be the best girlfriend she can.

Poor Leo. He just wants to get his revenge on the girl who made his life a living hell 10 years ago, and people keep getting in his way. I love that he went out of his way to develop this super suave ladies man personality just so he can get Tenma to fall in love with him - so he can reject her and break her heart! That's a lot of effort, and I always say hate and love are two sides of the same coin... I'll be interested to see how their relationship develops.

Leo’s desire for revenge is rather...silly. Such a petty reason to be a big jerk...over something that happened when they were 5 🙄 It was pretty ridiculous to give the aunt so much money in the beginning, and so far Leo is not very impressive in his plotting. Tenma is a stereotypical shoujo heroine, dense, popular, and clumsy. The student council president is an odd and unnecessary character.

Lighthearted, not a serious read in any way.

This is a cute Shojo Romance series. We follow a boy named Leo, who has a grudge against his childhood friend Tenma. He vows to get revenge against her for making a turtle bit his booty. The premise was silly enough, but didn't grip me. I really like the art, however the story fell a little bit flat for me. I thought it was cute but nothing special. I'll still read the rest of the volumes, hope it improves from here.

The first volumn of The Young Master's Revenge fell a bit flat for me...

I liked the initial premise. It's fun to see the guy be the main character, and his dynamic with the love interest is so fun!

It's just a bit disappointing to see the female lead, who has such a fun personality, end up so infantilised and lacking of any urgency. But I'll cut the series some slack because it's only the first volumn.

This was cute and I like how well the characters were established in this first volume. The dog was really cute and the bonus manga for the dog was quite funny.
I like the characters, and the fact they are all quite identifiable, as well as the fact their background was well established in this first volume.
Cute storyline and plot for this first volume, I look forward to continuing.

Ah yes, all the tired shoujo tropes: arranged marriage, spite from kindergarten incident, clumsy idiocy.... Wazzat, class pres just straight up kidnaps the girl and locks her up in his mansion to dress her up pretty? Sure, roll that in before the volume ends!

Everything here has been done before elsewhere, with much more charm & better art

1.65! not the ML being traumatized and seeking revenge after a turtle bit his butt LMAO 💀

the story was a bit promising at first (mainly bc how absurd it seemed), but became tiring as i read on. couldn’t care abt the characs (ML isn’t interesting + FL’s actions and attitude were repetitive) or the plot.

This one was a little weird but oddly endearing. Feels like an Asian live action drama in the works. The guy has such bad intentions that keep getting subverted by the female character's irrepressible good cheer and resilience. I'm interested in the next volume.

If I was younger, I would have loved this. Maybe it’s because I’m older, I don’t find it as cute? The first few chapters were adorable and I loved the characters. But I can only deal with so much oblivious from the FL before pulling my hair out lol

This was such fun all around. The premise is wonderfully ridiculous, the art is adorable, and the characters are extremely charming. I love that Tachibana is cackling about how evil he is as he does very nice things with protective and loving care -- it's just a funny juxtaposition.
