Everything seems to be finally coming together for Latina and Dale. They live in a place where they feel like they belong, they’re surrounded by people they love, and Dale has finally asked for Latina’s hand in marriage. Before long, though, the devil girl realizes what being the Eighth Demon Lord means: the other demon lords will stop at nothing to destroy her, and that will put everything she holds dear in peril as well. And to prevent that, Latina decides she must sacrifice herself. However, as a first-rate hero and Latina’s retainer, Dale won’t let that happen, and he sets out to do what he must: eliminate the seven demon lords.
It was so action filled and fun to read! I liked seeing Dale get driven to a corner and going nuts to rescue Latina. I'm glad we got to see all the demon lords too. We also see more of Latina's mom, Mov.
Pretty solid volume. I believe it starts with Latina dealing with the fallout from a previous volume, her "deal to become a demon" to extend Dale's life force (and unintentionally, his power, as now both a hero and a Demon-Lord retainer). Unfortunately for Latina, the other Demon-Lords are affected by her deal, so there is a need for erasure of this 8th demon lord. Of course, Dale isn't going to stand by.
It's a really sweeping chapter. A lot happens between the different nations and the demons that control them. It's unclear how this work will proceed going forward (maybe back to slice of life? Maybe kingdom building?). I kind of got the sense during the volume that we could be setting up for a tragedy, and I'm still not sure after having finished it if that isn't a possibility.
The only thing I didn't like was there were some plotholes that the writer just filled with excuses. Oh, you're not supposed to be able to ride a soaring wolf without magic... Well, these wolves have protective magic themselves / the riders are strong enough to handle the wind. There were other examples (well, one major one), but that would get into spoiler territory, so let's leave it there. The writer also had major info dump territories in this plot, which were super apparent reading the prepub since the final part was huge. I started listening to the last 3-4 parts about 3 hours ago and just finished, so yeah.
Light novel This one was difficult for me to completely enjoy and it's for personal reasons. As a reader, historian, and student of anthropology, I love books. I mean I seriously love them. Latina is captured by the other demon lords and banished in an attempt to curb her power. Fine. But Dale sets out to kill every demon lord in vengeance. Fine. Even regretting another who is a good ruler, still he kills his opponent. But the first demon lord Dale fights is a librarian. I consider the burning of the great Library of Alexandria one of the greatest tragedies and crimes in all history. Dale burns the library, practicing a scorched earth policy. That, in itself is troublesome morally. But to burn books? I almost stopped reading entirely. I still had to pause for a while and come back. This is actually a dark book, not very light at all. Dale does some dark deeds for this girl. Including burning a library with irreplaceable books in its collection. If you're this far into the series, you want to find out what happens. Just know that Dale is willing to murder to get Latina back.
Slowest pacing and kinda boring in the series. Barely anything happens. Just purely building Latina’s real identity which i think anyone with a brain in the first 2 books wouldve guessed.
