People with gender identity problems are increasingly often encountered by health professionals. The problems are often imagined to consist only of transsexuality, but actually comprise of both this and many other diagnoses. Properly establishing a diagnosis and excluding alternatives including psychosis, partial androgen insensitivity syndromes and personality disorder is complex. The subsequent management of these disorders and their differential diagnoses is even more so. Transsexual and other Disorders of Gender Identity provides a comprehensive and extremely practical account of the management of disorders of gender identity and their differential diagnoses. Particular consideration is given to, among others, coincidental mental illness, disability, family and relationship issues, forensic and military settings. Psychological and endocrine aspects are covered in depth, surgical aspects to a level adequate for all but a specialist surgeon, and legal aspects to the level generally needed by health professionals. This book provides vital detail for general practitioners, surgeons, endocrinologists, speech therapists, social workers and, especially, psychiatrists.

To build upon and rephrase this work's description... we see that health industry professionals have encountered gender identity problems for decades. These 'problems' transcend far beyond only transsexuality. It does not matter which side of the Rainbow Fence one finds themself, or even if atop the fence, this work remains a vital historic piece from which to gain the mindset of psychology's history in this vital area. "Transsexual and other Disorders of Gender Identity provides a comprehensive and extremely practical account of the management of disorders of gender identity and their differential diagnoses."
This work covers the 'pre-I'm-Ok-Your-Ok' era of western history. Some might say and feel that society has transcended from standard perversions to labeling them as disorders; others maintain that these 'disorders' are now championed as attributes of normality and "part of life's rich tapestry"; still others may see the current tread in this area as declining deeper into the dark realms of immoral perversion with the introduction of compelled public schools' adolescent indoctrination with 'genders-by-the-dozen'; while others, versed and well-read in world and cultural history may say, "There is nothing new under the sun" or simply wonder: "So, what's the fuss all about?"
Psychological and endocrine aspects are covered in depth as are... family and relationship issues, coincidental mental illness, forensics, disability, surgical aspects, social and physical aspects of transition, Asperger's, schizophrenia, those inappropriately referred for surgery, and legal aspects to be considered by health professionals - though, those have changed significantly for the global populous since this work was produced. "Patients with gender disorders do not want therapy. They want surgery... Broadly, it would seem that gender-disordered people view their difficulties as a problem with their body, not a problem with their mind."
We learn, as this statement points out that: "Properly establishing a diagnosis and excluding alternatives including psychosis, partial androgen insensitivity syndromes and personality disorder is complex. The subsequent management of these disorders and their differential diagnoses is even more so... As the author notes in his introduction, books like these are hard to find. There are plenty of books about (and by) transsexuals, but hardly anything from an objective, clinical perspective - noting the exact outcomes of the treatment, rather than purely discussing it... This book provides vital detail for general practitioners, surgeons, endocrinologists, speech therapists, social workers and, especially, psychiatrists."
One can clearly see the outcome of this work's content as politics has wormed its way into the medical realms: Gender Identity, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Wuhan SARS-CoV-2, etc. Personal medical evaluation and treatment has been replaced by the political government body's "one size fits all" approach, all to the detriment of the patient(s) and society at large. As politicians continue to mandate 'normality' we will continue to observe additional 'diversions' being classified as normal variations within the human species.
With an additional baker's dozen list of expert contributors, including the International Classification of Diseases, this work provides ample research material for the knowledgeable reader. "The entire book is based on empirical data - Barrett makes no statements without backing them up... I'd recommend the book to any clinician and to anyone generally interested in learning about transsexualism." A plethora of subject 'case reports' augment the various disorder/disease sections and provide the researcher with 'personal' accounts and experiences of individual subjects.
Gender identity disorders require sufficient history and empirical confirmation. Confirming things does not imply distrust or disbelief. (Today defined as: containing others' social perception of the individual, actual physical biological, the individual's personal attractions and their personal expression - refer to the 'Genderbread Person' school teaching curriculum).
UK: The Gender Recognition Act of 2004 (enacted 2005), set legal parameters for qualification, such as: ✔- diagnosed as having a gender dysphoria, or: ✔- have had gender reassignment surgery, and ✔- have lived in their acquired gender role at least 2 years, and ✔- intend to do so permanently for the remainder of their life.
This work "has explicitly not concerned itself with questions of aetiology, but rather with practicalities." Happy reading!
