Super Powereds: Year 4

Rate this book
The final year at Lander has finally arrived for the Melbrook students and their peers, and with it comes a whole new set of challenges. Still reeling from the events of their junior year, the remaining students will have to push past their pain - and so much more - if they hope to be one of the ten to claim the title of Hero upon graduation.

Constant tests and trials await the senior students. Beyond simulated missions and classes, they’ll also have to buckle down to learn about agents, prospective teams, internships, and other seemingly endless elements of being a Hero.

For some, however, the classroom is only one aspect of the trouble that lies ahead. Long-buried secrets have been unearthed; old mysteries are finally unraveling; and what lies at the center of it all has the potential to rock the realm of Heroes to its very foundation.

Let's get one thing straight, this has been one of the greatest book series I've ever read.
What makes it standout are many elements combined together to get a synergized effect.
Great characters check.
Character development check.
World building double check.
Excellent plot check.
Has sufficient length to keep me entertained. check
Gave me goosebumps often check.

Recommended to everyone who likes Superpowers.

I am devastated that this series is over, overwhelmed to say goodbye to these characters that I have connected with so closely. Of course, it was inevitable that I would have to say goodbye, as is always the case with fiction.
I was, however, remarkably satisfied with the way the series wrapped up. Up until the end, I was on the edge of my seat, needing to know happened next. The action scenes were probably some of my favourite I have ever read, and the entire book was just exciting and gave me the same feeling of having to devour it as quickly as possible.
The only issue now I have nothing more to devour.
I thought I would have been able to hold off reading the end of this for longer. I wanted to hold off and savour it as much as possible.
I am very hopeful of books to come that are set in this world.

1981 pages for this installment alone. Yowza. I started off this series with reservations. But damned if I didn't plow through all four books (over 3000 pages) in less than 2 weeks. It was the literary equivalent of eating an entire family sized bag of Doritos. I'll let you decide if that constitutes a recommendation or not.

Re-listened May 2019. Wow, I forgot how long this book was. Much more action in this book compared to the other 3 though. I really enjoyed the re-read. Original review below:

I finished this audiobook during a 12 hour road trip last week and this is the first chance I have had to write a review. I usually write a review right after I finish a book because the story and my feelings for the book are fresh in my mind. I finished 3 more books since then and while the story is still fresh in my mind, my feeling are a little muted so I am expecting this to be a much shorter review.

Overall this was a great ending to the series. As the title suggests, this is the last year of school, if they are able to graduate they will be true heroes. So not only is there the story line about trying to graduate, there is also the left over issues from the attack on the Lander campus from the previous year. Since this is the last book in the series, I feel confident I am not giving away spoilers when I also say that we finally get the backstory of Globe and Intra and how everything connects to Alice, her mother and her father.

While the powers were the most interesting part of the story to me, I was surprised at how attached I became to the 5 main characters: Alice, Mary, Nick, Vince, Hershel/Roy. The characters ended up being much more complex when compared to the first book. Their motivations were somewhat simplistic ( always trying to do the right thing), but that added to my enjoyment of this book. Sometimes the best inspiring moments are when someone does the right thing just because it is the right thing. The ending had something of an " and they all lived happily ever after vibe", but with this type of story I would expect nothing less.

I really enjoyed this entire series

This book has been as great if not better than the previous three years. I cannot wait to see how it ends. For those who do not know, he puts up chapters on his website so you can read along.

I was so very disappointed by this book. I had been waiting excitedly for so long. While the plot and twists had so much potential, there was so much over-writing and repitition. Two-thirds of this book should have been cut. The phrase "That was the only warning he/she got before....." was used over and over. Characteristics of supers and people were repeated ad nauseam. The book actually just started to irritate me.

The fighting, testing, and climax simply dragged, including two one-on-one fights that were neither original thoughts nor necessary. One was not even reconciled. It was almost like the author forgot to go back to it. The epilogue read like it came out of the disappointed reader of the Harry Potter epilogue in which not much info was given. This is because the story was over.
Vince's "fear" was so overly discussed with no discernible growth in four years that I just found him annoying.

This was a very unfortunate end to a great series. An editor was needed, and I'm not sure if one was used. It is either what comes from writing a novel on the internet or self-publishing. I have to go with the former, since other Hayes books have not been like this. Just because the idea is there or gets written down, does not mean it is necessary. Just too much word vomit.

Was this series worth it?
Ehhh, not really. It was cringy, repetitive, and waaay too long.
Saying that, it was extremely addicting… as you may be able to tell as I listened to all four within two weeks which is over 3,000 pages and it was by audiobook which I typically don’t prioritise.

But please, can Hayes stop describing Camille as "the pale blonde" and Vince as "the silver haired young man".
And Vince? Can he have more personality than being the incredibly honourable and loyal overpowered hero who all the girls crush on?

“Death isn’t a luxury a hero can afford to suffer.”
First of all, a luxury? Plus, I don’t think this is limited to heroes? This is what I mean by infuriating wording.

Nick is by far the best character in this entire series. As soon as he turned up in book one with his charm and sunglasses, I knew he was a rouge bad boy I would enjoy.

Mary basically experienced a character assassination in this book - like what happened to her?
Alex had a lot more page time.
The competition took waaay too much page time and I have to admit to absolutely not caring as the outcome was so obvious.

I was definitely zoning out towards the end as everything just felt so repetitive after four books of this.

The epilogue was sweet and kind of acted as fan service.

I loved this series, and I'm sad it has come to an end. I really hope there are more books to come featuring these characters, that I grew to love.
I listened to this whole series on audiobook, and props should be given to Kyle McCarley, who did a great job with a large cast of characters.

I've read the entire series in a month or so, but it felt like I lived for 4 years with these characters. The series was great, every book had a lot going on and accomplished the idea of recounting a full year of school, not only making a few moments important. And this book was no different, it was even more intense. I'm so glad I decided to ignore the silly cover and the prejudice that a superhero story would be bad because, in the end, it was a great series.

________
OOOH, and great narration btw, it took the story to another level!

I can’t believe it’s over – what a ride! I laughed, gasped, and tried to remain emotionally stoic watching my squad grow up from annoying self-centered freshman to actual heroes. Other than Fred, this is the best audiobook series I’ve found thus far and definitely worth the ~5,000 page/160 hour commitment.

Now I really need a Roy spinoff. My fav was neglected in the epilogue.

What an AWESOME finale to this series. So many satisfying fights, so many mysteries resolved, and so many great characters doing badass things. I loved every page! Now that it's over can we talk about a few things??? !!!SPOILERS!!!

Okay first of all I've been thinking a lot about Hershel and Roy and the implications of their power. They are basically conjoined twins to a much more extreme level. How can they have relationships? I know that Hershel is with Mary but when Roy finds someone is it gonna be some kind of sister-wife situation, are they all going to live together, do they split the time with their partners? And then what do they think about when they're not out? Like when Roy is out is Hershel sleeping in there? Does it feel like he's trapped inside a body not being able to do anything? So many questions!

Secondly, Nick's power is crazy. After getting that initial boost in year 3 he basically unlocked a sort of future seeing ability where if he has a strong intuition about something, it's 100% going to happen. In his charged state he can even bend the chance but how far would he be able to push that if he constantly practiced and worked on his power?

Thirdly, Hallow/Casper can turn down the effects of age??? Can he use the power on himself like Camille can? If so, he's effectively immortal. And he can make whoever he wants immortal as well. That's insane!

I have so much more stuff that I'm thinking about too that I'll probably add on later. This was such an awesome series!

Update 8-6 - SP4 run time 60 hrs 37 mins. War and Peace is 61 hrs 8 mins. I feel like this should count for 6 books (each read) at least on my reading goal!

Update 7-14 - First audio read, I loved it as much as reading it on the site. BUT I can see some getting lost with the pace. It jumps around after about halfway I guess. But I love love loved it just as much as the weekly reads and the whole shebang rereads. Vince is my favorite hero I can say with certainity at the end. I totally get why any other character would be someone else's though. The characters are just all so damn well written. The whole series is. And I've already started the reread of this one.... Again. Seriously this is like my Harry Potter book series. I so look forward to Drew's future writings. I need this whole series in print and signed. Future to-do list.

It's finally over. :( I loved this journey so much. Everything wraps up well and still leaves room for Drew to return if he wants to. Fingers crossed sooo hard.

Dammit, Hayes!!!!

My comment above is solely directed to Drew's ability to tug on my damned heartstrings ... Good thing? Absolutely. The bad: Me tearing up at 40000 feet with a plane full of people--and all I can do is request Kleenex from the flight attendants ... while trying to playoff my "leaking, robot eyes" to the dry air. Oh, yes, I'm sure I did a good job at deflecting my occasional sobs here and there with a cough or a "why is it so dry in here?" comment.

Anyhoo, despite my own issues, I thought the finale of this series was endearing and was a nice way to close this chapter in these characters' lives. I hope to see more of them (in full superhero glory) in other books in this universe in the future.

Drew, thank you for giving us a hell of a fun run of great characters and cool stories. Oh, looking forward to listening to Kyle McCarley's reading on the audiobook.

I really do love this story except for the language. At first I thought the language wasn't too bad, but by the end the F bomb was dropped entirely too much. There are just so many better ways to express ones self. Had I not loved the story so much, I probably would have rated it a 3 star with the excessive language towards the end.

The story itself though, I really did enjoy. I loved the different characters as well. In the end, the epilogue, gave you a great amount of wrap up to really make it complete as well. Not a bad story at all except for the excessive bad language.

The characters are really fantastic. They each have their own powers, their own personalities and I enjoyed getting to know each one as the books progressed. Drew Hayes did a great job making them each their own person. I really loved the differences and nuances and how they each got along as a group. It was really great.

The story was fun and entertaining. I was pulling for the characters through their tests and trials. The story was action packed almost all the way through. What more could you ask for in a superhero book.

The narrator, Kyle McCarley, is an entity of his own. I can't stand listening to him on regular speed. He is a bit drawn out, slow and really hard to listen to. He is really annoying on regular speed. However, once I push him to 1.5 Xs the speed, I absolutely LOVE Kyle's narration. He is spectacular at giving each character their own voice. I knew exactly who he was once he began speaking. He really is a great narrator as long as I speed him up. I can't imaging anyone else bringing life to this series like he did.

This was a completely satisfying conclusion to an outstanding series. I started reading Super Powereds at the urging of a friend. Based on the title and subject matter, thought it would be pretty fluff. And to be honest, if Super Powereds were music, I would definitely put it in the pop category. However, it would be exquisite, well-crafted pop that tugs at your heart strings.

All the books in this series are very well written (and get better with each one), and each took me on an emotional roller coaster. There are more laugh-out-loud funny moments in these books than in any other I have read this past year. It's a actually a little embarrassing to be snorting with laughter when on a crowded train. But I will happily accept that embarrassment again if Drew Hayes decides to write more books in this literary universe. Highly recommended.

great ending to a great story
I just want it to keep going. This is an Awesome series with characters that you can really fall in love with. I will be rereading these books again and again.
I do have two quibbles with the series over all, or should I say the world over all, but I'm not sure the author didn't slide those in on purpose to be noticed so I'm going to give Drew Hayes the benefit of the doubt. Lord knows he's more than earned it.

UPDATE: 5 years later
OH jaysus christ this book is long! the audiobook is 60-hours ugh! So much of those 60 hours are digression, repetition, and what ever the hell you call it when the heroes are facing a doomsday countdown and then the author has them dither to stress out the reader. Drew Hayes really over uses that pointless delay thing in this book.

I don't know how I made it through the first 3 books, or Drew Hayes changed his writing style. After just a few hours of this book I was just sick and tired of the constant (both inner and outer) monologues. I don't need 3-4 sentences saying the same thing repeatedly about how heroes need to protect their loved ones or whatever, every single time a character has a thought or has to take an action, or is in the middle of a fight and needs to explain their thoughts and motivations to their opponent. I'd say a good 75% of this book could have been rewritten or just cut entirely. I basically only finished because I had already invested the time in the other 3 books and needed closure.

Not my style at all.

I somehow slogged my way through the previous 3 in the series and thought the book 4 audiobook would be a good deal at one credit for 60 hours (60!!) of audio. But what it wound up as was Drews weekly chapter format or whatever he uses for the web portion of the story goes directly into the book. The book is in desperate need of a vicious editor.

It's been a year or two since I listened to the previous book. The pacing is bad, the dialogue is cringy...I'm not a fan at all.

This series almost feels like a prequel for what could truly be an amazing story!

Despite initial glaring issues, this series manages to make it through with flying colors. I fell in love with each of the characters and rooted for them to succeed (even the MC).

Here’s to hoping Drew Hayes does a hero’s series with them afterwards. He has grown with each book and is ready for another, more fully fleshed out arc.

SUPER POWEREDS: YEAR FOUR is the ending of a fantastic series that, nevertheless, feels a little too pat. I enjoyed it a great deal but I also kind of feel like the epic conclusion with team ups, punches, and big dramatic revelations was less interesting than the slice of life stories that led up to events. On the other hand, it is a culmination of everyone's character arcs until this point and I approve of most of them. Much of the book is based around the investigation of Charles Adair a.k.a the Alchemist and the horrifying lengths that he was willing to go to in order to bring his wife out of a coma. I would have been more interested in following up on that from her perspective and the public's reaction to the "cure" for Powered status being released.

Still, I have to say as big literary punch fests go, this is a solid example of such. If you've read the previous volumes of the series then this is certainly something to finish the series off with. It's been a long road getting from there to here but it's a book with faith of the heart--gratuitous Enterprise reference.

This rating is not so much for Volume Four which is a strong 4 stars, but for the overall series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I can't say enough, as this series was so much brain candy, and Hayes does a wonderful job wrapping all story lines up, and I'm sad saying goodbye to all those characters.
My only comment is perhaps the length, could have been a bit shorter on action , as in the Intramural competition.
There certainly can be more written, in the series, especially in between the last chapter and the epilogue, which I would love to see. Wishful thinking.
Thanks to everyone at Fantasy Buddy reads putting this on my radar.

Pienācis pēdējais mācību gads pirms desmit laimīgajiem absolventiem būs ļauts kļūt par Varoni ar lielo burtu. Jau tā atlases process noslēdzošajā posmā, lai no 15 mācību gadu uzsākušajiem atlasītu Varoņa titula cienīgos, nav viegls, bet iepriekšējā gada noslēgumā ekstrēmistu grupas Sons of Progress uzbrukums Landers universitātes teritorijai, kurā mācību ņem ne tikai potenciālie varoņi, visu padarījis jo sarežģītāku, jo pašsaprotamu iemeslu dēļ nebija iespējams rīkot trešā mācību gada noslēguma eksāmenus.
