I felt like this could have been a pretty good book, if not for the main character and the horrible historical context. When I read the premise, I was intrigued. Plus, it's free on Kindle on Amazon, so why wouldn't I read it? However, I was still disappointed. Megan was annoying at best and cliched and intolerable at worse. The book gave more emphasis to meeting Franklin (and the ensuing romance) and Megan wanting to do something with her life than to any substantial plot. It felt slow-moving, and the book isn't even long to begin with. It felt as if everyone was a modern, shallow character. There was no delving into actual ancient Egyptian history, or even that of the wartime era Egypt. It seemed as if the author wanted to write this story and was like, "Where should I set this? Egypt? Well, I know nothing about Egypt except from watching The Mummy, but let's do it!"
The writing style isn't horrible. It's minimalistic in description, but it gets the message across. The premise is really interesting, it just didn't live up to my expectations.
This book contains action, romance, and history. The action is ongoing throughout the book. The romance is clean and simple. The history involves ancient Egyptians. If you like any or all of these traits you will like Scarab.I love time travel stories, and this one was no exception, the idea behind the characters jumping to different points, but being limited to Egypt is different from most. I do think that there could be a bit more development in some parts to make this even better, but it is the first book so it could develop later in the series
Scarab: Falling Through Time - It's been a long time since I read a book like this. Funny, entertaining, intriguing; all while a good story is being told. This is a well written time travel story with it's own little spin. The characters are developed, but don't expect realistic dialog. We've got Ancient Egyptian that has modern English translations. But this is some of what makes this story funny.
There is a dark side in this story with trying to keep the magical scarab safe and the some of the main characters alive. The reader expects certain things, which the plot delivers but it's how to survive the bad things that is intriguing. I enjoyed this book immensely and have the next book lined up to read. I enjoyed this author's work and contacted her for ARCs.
Scarab 2: Fighting Time - Cliffhanger. The story continues with more intrigue, romance and all kinds of "out of the pan and into the fire". Well written, still with humor but a lot more darkness in this book. More secrets are discovered and more information found and betrayals abound. The pages fly by with action, suspense and romance. These books are full of personality.
Scarab 3: The Chains of Time - Hang on for a ride; this is a more action packed, adventure filled story; concluding the series. Well written, with humor, along with a gamut of emotions; this story keeps the reader glued to the pages with author's ability to describe scenes, emotions, places, etc. This has been an intriguing, suspenseful, romantic trip through the centuries and then some. All three books are full of personality and it's difficult to put them down, even momentarily. I've never been disappointed by this author's work and I'm glad I contacted her to review her books.
I liked a ton of things about Falling Through Time - the premise, the characters after the first couple chapters, the story line. I liked seeing a young girl ACT young (naive) and mess up. There were a few shock value points that didn't sit well with me, and some things I would have liked to see polished. The book was slow to start, and hard to get into. I think it could have started later and had the first bit added in piece by piece. I know that doesn't work for every story, but I struggled through the first 30% and flew through the last 50%. Somewhere in that unaccounted 20% things were getting there.
I think the story if fun, and if you can get to the real story, and gloss over some of the time travel rules, it's a really good story.
This is one of my favorite books. This is my second time to read it. The author kept me hooked from beginning to end. Megan, our modern day hero, he’s given a precious gift for my friend. This gift allows her to travel through time. However, as they begin their time travel adventures, they aren’t really prepared for the surprises that come along.
The book seems pretty clean. There are no sex scenes And not very many bad words. I would recommend this to anyone over 13.
Slow to start but once the stong so does your imagination beyond the story in the book.
The story starts out kind of slow. Then picks up beyond your imagination. A lot of action. The brother is a brat and does nothing to enhance the story. I would like to read the other two in the series but I don't want to pay for them. I'll wait until they are free. By the way there are quite a few errors.
This is probably one of the most interesting time--travel books that I've ever read.
Great time--travel story. That being said, there's a lot of different storylines at the end of the story that I wish had played out differently. But since I don't have the continuing story with book two or book three, I suppose that the storyline from book one will have to suffice for the ending plots, and will simply remain disappointing in several different areas.
I felt this book was entertaining but didn't rate it higher because it suffers a bit from the dumb hero problem. The main character makes mistakes for the sake of plot. The "rules" on how the Scarab works I thought were fun. It added a mystique to what will happen when it gets used. And the author's writing style flowed well.
And it leaves you in the lurch... This story is fast paced and while the heroine is abrasive and abrupt ahe grows on you. The only issue I gad with this book was the excessive language. The "f" word was used a lot as was "s" word. The amount they were used was bothersome. Otherwise the story was really good and leaves you in the lurch...
You should read this. Time travel always has so many rules. What would be the worse thing to happen? However it’s the ending that grabbed my attention much more than the beginning. It could just be the young Jamie causing trouble but I can’t wait to see where Jamie sends them next.
Escaping deplorable conditions at home, and being offered a chance to see Egypt in various time frames, it was not a difficult decision to clasp the scarab necklace and wish herself elsewhere. It was only the start of a very intriguing tale. Yes, I enjoyed the journey and look forward to the next.
Just finished this book. It made an interesting read and it's nice to go back to Egyptian historical times. The characters are bold and the storyline flows swiftly. My only small nag would include a spoiler, and as I don't do spoilers I'll leave it at 4 stars.
Interesting, but slow start. Identifiable characters in a bad family situation. Impulsive young brother forces some events. Worth reading, but protagonist needs to start learning from the bad events that she experiences.
This story has a different technique for traveling through time. It started a bit slowly and built up speed until I was anxiously reading ahead to find out what will happen next. I quickly finished the book and am ready for book 2.
I enjoyed this book immensely. It had romance, intrigue, time travel, immortality, misunderstandings, slavery, kidnappings, a teen pharaoh and a evil priest.
I would highly recommend this to any young adult or teen who enjoys these topics.
Loved this time travel tale with insight into Egyptology! The moral dilemmas of time travel: can you interfere? When? How? This story is a lot of fun, but if you want to be more serious and do some philosophical thinking, the stage is set. Looking forward to continuing the adventure!
When the story began, it felt somewhat childish, I guess because the characters were children. But the story advanced into something serious and interesting. Looking forward to reading the second book in the series. I enjoyed this book very much.
Loaded with action and despair with a young woman who has adventures galore! This book is chock full of excitement ! Everyone should but this book, it is very well written and sucks you into the story!
Though the time travel 'rules' seemed a bit nonsensical to me, I completely enjoyed this book. it was a little bumpy at the beginning, but I ended up really liking the story and the characters. Definitely, want to read the next one.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
Well written, good character development and a very enjoyable read. It was a bit different genre from what I usually read, but I would read more by this author.
