Konrad Neale is a television presenter. His waning career has been given a new lease of life since he took on a series of hard-hitting documentaries that investigate miscarriages of justice.
Matthew Hawley has been convicted of the brutal murder of his wealthy attractive wife Helena. However, he has no memory of the events and insists he is not responsible for willingly killing her.
When Konrad interviews Matthew in prison, he explores the details of the murder and the possible motives behind it. But all is not as it seems.
Did Matthew murder his wife?
Soon the search is on to identify who else might be involved in the murder of Helena and Konrad is about to learn that sometimes the camera lies.
Alison Morgan lives in Bedfordshire where she was born and brought up. She worked in the county for nearly thirty years for the NHS mostly at the front line of mental health services.
Alison retired earlier than anticipated because of an unexpected health challenge which redirected her to write in order to save her own sanity. Her crime thrillers pull on many years of experience within psychiatry.
Other than that: family, friends, rugby, live music, real cider, lively conversation, laughter and more recently motorbikes (mid-life crisis).
Konrad Neale is a television presenter with a new crime series documentary. The subject of this documentary is Matthew Hawley who was convicted of the heinous murder of his beautiful wife, Helena. The only problem is that Matthew has absolutely no recollection of the crime. Neale thinks with the right questions he may be able to solve this mysterious puzzle. What would drive a man to kill his wife so brutally and why can't he remember?
This book sounded so intriguing and, it is, for the most part. Truthfully, I'm not a fan of erotica at all and don't seek out books with a lot of graphic sex. This book definitely has some fairly graphic scenes throughout but because it was such a big part of the story line I was able to forgive it this. This story went in a completely different direction than the synopsis implies. The story focuses on Konrad Neale and the Matthew Hawley part of the story is just used to get the ball in motion. The pacing is good and it is well written BUT this story is just so over the top unbelievable. We're talking a serious case of suspension of disbelief, for me anyways. Having said that I still needed to know how this was going to end and never once did I contemplate putting it aside. All in all I enjoyed it even if it did go a bit out of my comfort zone.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Konrad Neale is a TV presenter who has just started filming a new crime series in which he looks into the murder of Helena Hawley. Konrad conducts a series of interviews with her husband, Matthew, her murderer. Matthew knows that he has killed his wife – but he doesn’t remember any of it. As Konrad explores in depth the relationship Matthew had with his late wife Helena, he ends up more implicated in the situation than he has ever anticipated.
Wow. Talk about dramatic.
This erotic thriller takes you on one hell of a ride. It is over the top, far-fetched, dramatic as hell and very unbelievable at times however…… I loved every second of it. The complexity of this story is ridiculously good and I was hooked from the very first page. What I loved most about this book is that the author introduces several characters and immediately you start to wonder if they could be implicated in the mystery and throughout the novel, you don’t trust anyone. I honestly couldn’t wait to get to the end to have all my questions answered.
The last 20% of the novel will have your head spinning with confusion as that’s where the bulk of the twists and turns are, but it’s worth it for the most part. There was only one thing that I feel let the story down - I didn’t feel that that certain person needed to die for the story at all, it was unnecessary to add even more heartache on top of what has already happened. My only other small issue with this book was that there were one too many characters to remember and when twists and turns started to occur I’d have to take a second to remember who they were talking about.
Having said that, this book was absolutely dark, dirty and gripping and I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of suspenseful thrillers and anyone who likes a dose of sex in their thrillers.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank them, the publisher Bloodhound Books and the author A.B. Morgan for this opportunity.
Wait...what?!? You're in prison for murdering your wife yet you don't have any memory of it! That would pique my interest for sure. And so I found myself in the same boat as Konrad , a TV presenter of hard-hitting documentaries, seeking to find out a whole lot more about the circumstances surrounding Matthew's murder conviction. Unfortunately for Konrad, he'll wish he hadn't, as he begins receiving disturbing threats to stop digging. Didn't anyone warn him about curiosity killing the cat?
The story is centred around the interview Konrad has with Matthew, and Konrad's attempts to find any missing pieces to Matthew's story. As we read along though, Konrad's personal life, with his detached, unloving wife, also becomes a focal point. Essentially, the author is spoiling us with two stories for the price of one.
Starting off slowly, it took me a while to get into, however, as one reads along, the story inevitably sucks you in until you're on the edge of your bed, sacrificing sleep to see what the next reveal will be.
A very clever novel that will keep your brain cells revved up. Top it off with chilling scenes and delicious twists and we have a splendid story on our hands!
A 4.5⭐️ rating from this Bibliomaniac.
I would like to thank Netgalley, Bloodhound books and the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.
This is the third book I have read by this author and I have to say it is sooooo different to her previous two. She has taken The Camera Lies to a WHOLE different level of darkness and I for one ab-so-lu-te-ly LOVED it!
The start of the story ensured that I was well and truly intrigued and had to keep turning those pages. I mean how can you murder someone and not know it? Like Konrad, I was desperate to know more and Konrad becomes that wrapped up with Matthew’s story that he delves into something that he will wish he had left alone.
To start with the story very much focuses on Matthew and events surrounding the murder. As it goes along though it becomes more about Konrad.
Konrad is someone that has it all but that still doesn’t bring happiness. There is no love lost between Konrad and his wife. She is happy to play the doting wife as Konrad provides her a lifestyle that she loves and as his manager she seems to boss him around in his work and home life. I did feel ever so slightly sorry for him.
The Camera Lies is a dark and twisted read that had me engrossed throughout. The story takes unexpected turns that at times left me feeling quite breathless. An extremely clever story and my favourite of the authors so far.
Yesterday I was so excited to get arc of The Camera Lies by AB Morgan from netgalley but when I downloaded it, it turned out to be completely different book - In The Blood by Lesley Welsh. Has anybody else facing same issue? How do I let netgalley know about it? I send 'Feedback' to Publisher but is there anything else to try?
I liked how this story started off as more of an interview to get the story going and a documentary of the case… But then it completely had me hooked how everything intertwines! A good story, with a great plot and twist towards the end for readers. It kept me on my toes and I did not guess the plot at all!
This story ends with a round up of a court case making this a perfect crime, thriller and detective story for readers. I enjoyed reading this story and awarded a well deserved four stars. The Camera Lies is well written and one of those stories that makes you go “OH! Thats why it’s called that”. Highly recommend. It does however contains some dark parts throughout and violent sex scenes.
Having enjoyed Morgan's previous two novels, I was really looking forward to reading this one. I knew from the early ARC reviews that it was going to be a different kind of read but I wasn't expecting what I found.
The plot is complex and twisty, always tricking and fooling you, and so much darker and edgier than the author's previous work. If you like your antagonists devious and manipulative, dangerous and deadly, then you've found your perfect match in this book.
I enjoyed the pace of the plot and the cast of characters contained a great range of personalities. The overlapping threads of this novel were expertly crafted. It's a story that makes you think that not everything is as it seems. It's scary that someone's thoughts and actions could be so controlled.
A book to keep your brain ticking over- a book to make you think. Two years ago Matthew murdered his wife. Not only murdered but eviscerated most of her organs. However he can’t remember a thing about it. Konrad is interviewing Matthew as there is more to him than just a psychopath. He is reinstating his TV career as a presenter of hard hitting documentaries. This is a powerfully written book from the start(there are only a few lines of he details of the murder). The book is about the interview with Matthew and Kondrad trying to find a missing link to the story. One who may know more about Matthew but doesn’t want to be found. This is a very interesting read where one story becomes entwined with another and takes the lead. You feel for Konrad but also maybe realise how foolish he has been with some of his actions. His cold hearted wife and long suffering children who each have their own opinions of his life and charades. I didn’t see the twist and very much enjoyed the courtroom scenes. I won’t give anything away- just say that if you want a book to keep your grey matter on its toes then this could be the book for you.

This is my second read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Again the author wrote a unique storyline which had me applauding her again.
Konrad Neale is a television presenter. The book starts with Konrad interviewing Matthew Hawley a convicted murderer. Matthew has no memory of murdering his wife but everything pointed towards him being guilty. We also get a good insight into Konrads personal life.
I found this to be a well written fast paced thriller. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
A BIG Thank You to NetGalley and Bloodhound Books for providing me a copy of “The Camera Lies” by AB Morgan in exchange for my review. I found this book to be a mixed bag. There are some part of the books that are gripping, but other parts that could have been better.
Let’s start with the plot. The plot held my interest from the first page. I found Matthew’s story to be fascinating and couldn’t wait to dig into it! However, once immersed in the novel, the story shifted from Matthew and it became all about Konrad. In fact, the focus of the characters, the suspects and the plot shifted with various twists and turns. This made the book fun to read as I really didn’t know what was going to happen next. However, there was also a downside to it. I felt that the way the plot unfolds and the moment of revelation was very disappointing. The author does fine job in building up the suspense and mystery, but fails to build any drama or flair during the moment of revelation. I was expecting a more dramatic moment when Konrad encounters the villain face to face.
Now to the characters. To be honest, I found Matthew and Helena’s story more intriguing than Konrad’s. I didn’t care for Konrad as I felt he was a womanizer, a coward and somewhat dimwitted. In a lot of scenes, it is either Eliza or Annette who motivate him to proactively move on with his life. I didn’t care much for Lorna either and found Matthew and Lorna’s relationship boring. The only characters I really enjoyed reading about were Matthew, Annette, and Eliza. Oh, and of course, George was a complete delight!
I think the author had a lot of wonderful concept with ingenious plot twists for the book. After finishing this book, I really could not think of any plot holes. The author did a wonderful job in covering all the tracks and loose ends. There are quite a lot of moments that shocked me and I couldn’t believe it came out of the blue! However, I would have enjoyed this book if her style of writing had been more dramatic. Furthermore, I am not really a fan of erotica. I wouldn’t have really picked up this book had I known that it contained a lot of erotic scenes embedded in the plot.
Overall, “The Camera Lies” is a good suspense novel which has a significant amount of gore and erotica in it. I thought it was a good read, but not anything memorable. I am interested to pick up AB Morgan’s previous novels to see if they are better.
Well, let me tell you, this is not for the faint hearted! Or the squeamish. Or the prudish!
This is a gritty read; full of action, energy and unpleasant characters. It wasn't at all what I was expecting but I was quickly caught up in the plot which moved at a great pace, full of tension, complications and shocking revelations.
Morgan writes vividly and the action bounces off the pages. The reader is caught up in a complex tale with some graphic and erotic scenes which, although completely necessary to the plot and the characters, are still quite shocking at times! Morgan writing is fluent, full of pace and with a plot line that intricately links the two characters in a way that has the reader constantly guessing as the events unravel in front of their eyes.
I really liked the concept of a TV presenter interviewing someone convicted of a crime as it is a bit of a change from finding yourself in a police interview room listening to a suspect confess, or not, to a crime. It also gives Morgan an opportunity to play around with the interaction between the characters as the dialogue, and behaviour, between them is not restricted by the conventions of a police interrogation - and this is a novel that doesn't like to be restricted by convention or expectation! I liked the dynamic between the two men and the question of motivation and trust which is more blurred than when the protagonist is a detective. I liked that I thought I knew what kind of story I was going to be reading, but within a few chapters my suspicions and expectations were challenged and the story took a rather more dark and sinister route.
I think what really impressed me was Morgan's ability to write from a male point of view and to have created these characters who are so authentic and believable. They are both flawed and and not always gaining much empathy from the reader but they are always fascinating. I was impressed how well Morgan portrayed Konrad. He's an ambitious creation but Morgan has crafted him well and he's a memorable protagonist.
There is quite a wide range of characters who appear throughout the story but they all feel three dimensional and most importantly, they all feel appropriately threatening and unreliable.
Ultimately though, I think the best thing about this novel was it's fierce energy, pace, drama and complexity. It's the kind of book you realise you're reading with your mouth half open because you are constantly in a state of tension, suspense, shock and disbelief. Morgan's skill is in her execution of a surprisingly intricate plot that winds in and out of itself in a way that the reader could never second guess.
I was totally impressed with this stand alone thriller. It was very different from any other crime book I've read recently and knowing what I do now about the behaviour and personalities of the main characters, I might have been a little wary but actually, it's a total page turner. It will leave you quite breathless.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Morgan might write next!
Firstly I would like to thank the author AB Morgan, publisher Bloodhound Books and blog tour organiser for the ARC copy of The Camera Lies in return for an honest review. Having been lucky to read and review the author’s second novel Divine Poison, I was delighted to be able to take part in the blog tour for this her third novel. I really enjoyed Divine Poison which was a solid and tense psychological thriller and The Camera Lies is even better, showing AB Morgan is not resting on her laurels, but is fine tuning her writing skills. She has delivered an assured tale about secrets, lies and revenge that kept me reading desperate to know the fate of Konrad and those closest to him. It’s exciting and full of twists and turns that keep you guessing as to who the real villain is at the heart of the novel. Cleverly she managed to wrong foot me on a number of occasion and I was still doing so at the end of the novel. The characterisation is superb. Konrad the victim is not perfect, but this makes him all the more interesting. He has a steely determination that drives him to try and discover if Matthew Hawley really murdered his wife and yet he has secrets of his own. I don’t want the leading character in a thriller to be perfect, layers on layers give them depth AB Morgan gave me this and made me a very happy reader. If you’re looking for a highly enjoyable thriller then I would recommend this clever and edgy third offering from AB Morgan.
Konrad is investigating a 2 year old murder for his TV programme. He ignores anonymous warnings to stop his investigation and so finds himself personally threatened as he becomes more and more determined to find out what really happened.
An attention grabbing opening chapter as Konrad interviews the murderer who insists he has no memory of the event and would never have done such a thing. However the forensics and film footage of the crime seem to leave no doubt of his guilt. Meanwhile Konrad's marriage is not going so well, and he is tempted to return to the woman he loves but gave up. He then starts receiving chilling messages from a stalker who wants him to give up his investigation into the murder. To what lengths will the stalker go to get their way? Plenty of interesting characters with twists and surprises to keep the reader guessing almost from the start.
There are some sex scenes but they fit in with the context (I'm not a fan of erotica). Just enough chill factor to keep the book very exciting, but not so much as to be totally scary. There was a murder scene towards the end which I found unnecessary to the story, unpleasant and upsetting.
A 5* rating from me. This was a riveting and fast moving read all the way through, cleverly written to keep the reader guessing. Great entertainment!
This was the first novel I have read by A.B. Morgan so I wasn't sure what to expect. I appreciate that while it started off slowly, it didn't take long for me to be intrigued. The story revolves around Konrad Neale who is a GTV host for a true crime show. You find out that is investigating a peculiar crime involving Matthew, who murdered his wife Helena. After interviewing Matthew and watching it back with his co-worker and friend Annette (one of my favorite characters in the book) he feels like there's something Matthew is trying to tell him; This is where the wild chase began, so to speak. From this point forward you are flying down the road, whipping it around curves you see coming, and some are going to sneak up on you that you don't expect at all! His best friend Barney referring to his wife as the Camp Commandment made me giggle throughout. I enjoyed the author's character development. There were a lot of characters involved, but not too many where it starts to get confusing. The ending of the book was fast-paced but didn't necessarily feel rushed, just a lot of information at once. I was convinced I had figure out the end of the book about 2/3rds of the way through -- only to find out I was wrong. I was impressed. Not too many twists get me with as many thrillers as I have read. Overall, well done. Would recommend.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this which I voluntarily reviewed.
This is the first book I've read by this author but it certainly won't be the last.
The Camera Lies is a very different psychological thriller. It is almost as if there are 2 stories in one. The story moves from past to present but it is very easy to follow. Just when I was convinced of the innocence/guilt of one person, evidence is thrown in that suggests the opposite.
If you love psychological thrillers this is certainly for you.
This book has such good promise- but I found myself skimming the story just to get to the end to get a final conclusion.
I really didn't like any of the characters- Konrad was an annoying main character- who cared more about his mistress than his own family.
There was far too much elaboration on details that didn't need to be elaborated on- and things that needed more depth were brushed under the carpet or rushed through.
Did we really need to be told time and time again what Annette was eating? In detail?
This book was quick paced, kept me turning the pages & fully interested with great characters & shocking surprises.
I loved that the tv documentary Konrad was working on throughout the book kept the story going with essential information- not only for his show, but in the discovery of Tessa Carlton & how she fit into his personal life. Very well written, and a thrill to read!
I got to review this book thanks to NetGalley & Bloodhound Books for an honest & personal review!
This book had me hooked right from the start and doesn’t let up until the very last page. I loved the way the start of the book is written, whereby we learn a lot from the interviews that take place between Konrad Neale and Matthew Hawley. This is where all the questions start to be asked and we later find out exactly what happened. The plot has plenty of twists and turns and keeps you gripped throughout. It is full of lies, secrets and revenge and will keep you guessing and doubting everyone’s version of the truth. A brilliant read and not for the faint hearted.
Oh my goodness, I still can’t believe how much the author packed into this one. Yes it is, as promised in the blurb, about a tv personality and investigation of a possible miscarriage of justice but there’s way more to it than that. As I was reading I was thinking this would be a perfect book for a beach holiday as once you start reading you really don’t want everyday life getting in the way. There were quite a few surprises here and this is a thriller that stands out from the crowd.
My thanks to Bloodhound Books for this copy of The Camera Lies.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the story started of like a documentary to slowly draw you in and then all of a sudden the twist and turns started and kept you guessing to the end. I will definitely be reading more from this author. Thank you bloodhound books and netgalley for giving me the chance to read this book
f you think you know what’s going to happen in this book – think again!!
Yes, the start of this book is a little bit slow and took a while to get into, BUT those few chapters were vital in setting the scene for each individual character. It didn’t take long for the storyline to cement the fact that something had gone incredibly wrong. What that was, however, remained under lock and key for multiple chapters. Fingers were pointing at certain characters from all different directions, yet there was still a massive question mark looming over the certainty of their actions. Why did he commit a murder? Why doesn’t he remember it, surely someone would remember actively murdering another human being…right?
Once the pace of the storyline picked up a little bit, I was absolutely hooked by the gripping events which occurred rather frequently. I couldn’t get my head round why Matthew didn’t remember murdering his wife! There must be a logical reason but, seeing as I am not educated in that way, I had absolutely no idea which made this storyline even more chilling.
I love AB Morgan’s writing as she tells the story for what it is, rather than making it socially acceptable and keeping things covered. When events happened, AB Morgan made them very clear, leaving room for the reader to interpret the order of events in their own mind, before revealing the truth later on in the book. Despite being gruesome, I appreciated the black and white attention to detail, as it made the plot all the more realistic.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading such a chilling, addictive, and highly jaw dropping novel. What a book! Highly recommended.
[DISCLAIMER: e-ARC received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.]
Unfortunately I was really disappointed in this book.
I'm really interested in true crime so I thought a book that dealt with a true crime documentary show would be right up my alley but this just didn't hit the mark for me.
I actually thought this book was written by a man and was surprised when I realised the author was a woman as I found the female characters to be overly sexualised. I also found the story to have a lot of fat shaming and unnecessary descriptions of food when it came to a 'fat' character's eating.
There were also parts of the story that didn't make a lot of sense to me.
I also found the story to have a few too may conveniences for me and there were parts of the story at the end that weren't adequately explained for me, it kind of all fell apart for me at the end.
A good premise but didn't quite hit the mark for me.
Konrad Neal presenter of true crime series, The Truth Behind The Lies, begins investigating the murder of Helena Chawston-Hawley by her husband Matthew. He has no memory of killing her and claims they were blissfully married and had no motive to kill her.
Konrad and his team begin digging around, uncovering evidence of Helena’s mysterious sister but soon he begins receiving messages threatening him and his family, somebody who doesn’t want the truth to come out.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author this year, you can read my review of the other novel, Divine Poison, here.
This is one of most unusual crime novels I’ve read this year. It’s told as if your behind the scenes on a documentary TV show, watching through the research/interview/editing process but it’s not as dry or boring as you would imagine it. I could actually see this being turned into an excellent TV series.
There’s as a little of that unreliable narrator from Matthew Hawley, do you really believe his story? How could he have no memory of murdering his wife? As the story goes on it’s revealed that Helena is not the smart successful woman that everyone believes she is and has a much darker side that makes you question Matthew’s innocence.
Now I have to be honest I didn’t find Konrad all that likeable, a bit full of himself to be honest, but he’s one of those characters that is so interesting that he holds your attention. I did feel sorry for him a little being trapped in a loveless marriage and in love with someone else.
It’s quite difficult as with most mystery/thriller to give a complete review without revealing any spoilers but I did find certain aspects of the plot a little unbelievable. I also felt that there was a little lack of character description, the only person I could really picture was Konrad’s friend Annette.
Overall, a unique and interesting psychological thriller.
