3.75 stars, in truth.

I love this universe. I love its complexities. The majority of these characters have existed for millenia in their worlds and they exhibit all the weariness, wisdom, and regret that one might expect after seeing how little changes even as centuries go by.

I should warn you that not a lot happens here in terms of action or plot. This volume isn't about fighting, it's about figuring out how to live once the future presents itself and it's nothing like you were lead to believe. Some people don't care for these somewhat slow, character-developing kinds of story arcs. I think I can understand that. However, for me, it's books like this that give life to the characters on the page. Books like this make you care about those who are living the stories you're reading.

I liked this more than volume one because it seemed to improve on the things I said I had disliked there. There is more sense of what is going on, because now I'm more familiar with the situation. The artwork, while not as cool, is definitely more clear. It's more simple, for sure, but that's what the story needed, I think.
I could see myself picking up volume 3.

A great collection which ties-up some of the loose ends and questions that have been floating around for awhile: does Sideswipe still function? What is Pyra’s story? Optimus’ grief over Bumblebee. A lot is explored through flashback and memory, so don’t expect the storyline to move forward very much; do expect some solid universe and character building and some really good artwork from an assortment of artists.

Largely a collection of flashbacks, including Jetfire's journey towards becoming an Autobot, how Bumblebee first met Optimus Prime, Pyra Magna's background, and a story from the distant mythological past of Cybertron. Plus some present-day stories with Jazz and Sideswipe. All pretty solid reads with some decent character work. (B+)

B. "Past and present struggles... setting the stage for future developments," states the back cover: yes, this collection felt as five epilogues and a few prologues. Author John Barber runs them as character set pieces that stand well. He can't keep his hands off the parallel flashback story though. The final tale is tiring Ancient Cybertron utilizing Livio Ramondelli who is brilliant, but almost always used for those. In the heft, this interval volume has a 'Spotlight' feel, with some fanservice that hits the mark. Sure to appeal to regulars.

Transformers: Optimus Prime Vol. 2 is an impressive continuation of the franchise, showcasing John Barber’s exceptional ability to blend high stakes action with emotional depth. This volume doesn’t just expand the Transformers universe it elevates it, offering readers a thoughtful exploration of leadership, sacrifice, and redemption. Barber’s storytelling captures the heart of Optimus Prime while giving space to the broader Autobot narrative, resulting in a layered, compelling read that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

What truly stands out is the balance between explosive sci fi drama and the quieter, more reflective moments that reveal the psychological complexities of war its consequences, its regrets, and its lasting effects on those who fight it. Barber’s mastery of character voice and pacing creates a cinematic reading experience, while the volume’s integration of past struggles and future stakes deepens the emotional resonance. It’s a strong, engaging addition to the Transformers canon that will satisfy longtime fans and newcomers alike.

I want to like this series but it is way too shoe gazey, so far. Space Messiah Optimus isn't the least bit interesting and all I can think about is how much I miss the political machinations of the early years of Robots In Disguise. That ultimately led to something even better with Till All Are One but this? Two volumes of trying to get Earth to join the Council Of Worlds? Yawn.

Back on track after volume 1. Barber at his best: weaving in and out of historic Cybertron and, yes, even interesting takes on fleshlings. The back half in particulare, Sideswipe and then Alpha Trion's stories in particular are some the best issues IDW has ever published.

Still not as good as Lost Light, but still well written. The last two parts of this volume are especially good.
