This is a great handbook for business owners and I plan to keep this one safe as my daughter dreams of being am entrepreneur some day

FORMULAIC by Matthew W. Certo is here to let the readers know that “appearances and veneer are alluring, but they alone can’t fix a bad product or prevent a seasoned buyer from seeing through a sleek exterior all the way.” The initial chapters of the book get the readers accustomed to the concept that marketing may be the final polish; however, it is the product itself that makes or breaks the deal. The author manages to address the most challenging questions that marketers face in this day and age, and write a book about them.
Promotion vs. the product is a major theme throughout the text, and the author does a commendable job in addressing both sides of the argument. The final takeaway is, of course, in the hands of the readers. What stands out in the book is the way each statement is crisp and has logic to back it up. It does not come off as preachy. Understanding what you value, determining why you do what you do, going soul searching, and articulating the results of that search are some of the facets addressed in the book concerning marketing a product or a brand. Formulaic is a step-by-step guide filled with questions that make the reader undertake a journey to find the answers themselves.
Matthew Certo uses storytelling to make a text about marketing fun. It is not all about definitions, terminologies, and case studies but also about personal tales with practical takeaways. There is no clear-cut formula to good marketing; however, a compelling story does come close. A good story catered to the interested people is equally important. So the target audience is the other side of the coin. The chapter names sound like a well-thought-out plan of attack in this battle to get that product in the right hands, and the content delivers what it promises.
In this age of development there are many who are using their creativity to launch many unique stuff in the market. Almost a lot of people you know nowadays own small businesses or have a brand of their own. As much as having a brand a business is important, it is more important for your business to be well known in order for it to succeed. So how and what must you do for your brand to be known by more people. Well, Formulaic will tell you that and many more new techniques so you can work and perfect the marketing aspect of your brand. Usually when you think Marketing, what comes to your mind the first thing? A lot might say Media Marketing or Ad promotion. Yes in lot of cases it helps but now people have gotten almost immune to them at this point.Author believes that a successful and thriving business not only excel at clever marketing but they are able to connect their beliefs, values and ideals in away that makes them different and inspirational in a way. This book provides various questions to consider first reguarding your brand and how you can use it to formulate a solution for its success. This will make you realize that " not one size fits all". Different products have different marketing elements. It was a very informative read on my part. I got to learn how marketing works and what type of strategies marketers usually use. This book provides a guide or a roadmap to Formulaic Marketing. It lays out in extreme details about how marketing process works and how you can create a formula that works best for your vrand and business. If Marketing is one of your interest or you're either a budding entrepreneur I would definitely recommend this book to you.
Many marketers will want to pick up resources on how to make ads convert to sales better. Formulaic is a marketing book with a different, more holistic approach.
In order for marketing to be successful, every piece of the business puzzle has to fit together. This is the purpose of Formulaic—and what it means to "market from the core." As Matthew says, "No promotional program can fix a bad product."
But it's also more than just a product. Each chapter runs through a different concept that's a different piece of the puzzle. Here are some highlights for me:
1️⃣ Have an Articulated Understanding of Who You Are: Readers of Start With Why will know the importance of this. Matthew will have you asking questions like "beyond our product, what impact are we looking to make on the world?" There are exercises to help answer these questions along the way.
2️⃣ Have a Story to Tell: There's a neat example of how a store named 16000 Movies outcompeted Blockbuster in central Florida. It started with the founder's origin story, which turned into a legend that motivated the entire company culture. (Nice touch—using a great story to make the point about brands having a story to tell!)
3️⃣ Commit to Becoming a Publisher: The perspective on social media content is spot on. This book explains how to grow an audience by publishing helpful content, not just commercials.
It's only once these and other great concepts are in place that the book turns up the advice and tactics on promotion. Following this formula, the end result should be more natural marketing, less frustration, and less money wasted.
The book is a quick and easy read, worth picking up for entrepreneurs and marketers who are fixated on ROI and want better brand presence.
“The foundation of Formulaic — its bedrock — is what lies at the core of the brand itself. It has nothing to do with how to write compelling copy for a Twitter ad or how to make a video go viral. "What is at the heart of the Formulaic brand is its base – its bedrock." It has nothing to do with how to make a video go viral or how to craft engaging content for a Twitter ad. How well a company is doing can be pinpointed during the first minutes of an experience with it. There are many seemingly small things that might make the difference between a brand with several unsatisfied, one-time costumers, and one with life-long, loyal clients and employees.
So what are the key factors that separate prosperous and mediocre companies?
There are things such as story-telling, culture, values and purpose that some entrepreneurs have defined for their brands since the early stages of their journey. Those things, and some more, are the breaking-point in which a company's future lies.
Based on the previously mentioned, it is extremely important that we, as entrepreneurs, go within, with the intention of defining the answers to questions such as: "What drives us to grow our business?" "What do we value as an organization?" and "Where are we headed?". There are times in which the only thing that is left for us to do in order to take a business to the next level, is to stop wasting time on being busy and on ignoring what is going wrong, and to start focusing on being honest with ourselves and on intentionally 'designing the future'.
So if you wanna answer these and more questions in the right way, and if you wanna start having honest & empowering conversations for your business, Matthew's book is a business-masterpiece that you should not miss out on reading.
In less than a 100 pages, you will learn some of the most valuable ideas and tactics that can be used to start to lead a meaningful and prosperous organization. Consider reading it if you are serious on taking your brand to the next level!
"To be remarkable, you have to be bold and unique. You have to have guts, and you have to care." — Formulaic: How Thriving Companies Market from the Core is a principle-backed approach to strategic thinking and telling your story more effectively. Matt Certo (@mcerto @findsomewinmore) is an experienced writer stemming from the business sector, and seamlessly blends artistic elements into disciplined, defined promotional attacks. If you’re interested in learning how to cultivate your brand, this is the book for you. — Personally, I love a good progressionist movement that’s backed by experience. Certo delivered. Formulaic is broken up into 10 chapters. The information builds upon itself & you can almost feel your brain growing alongside the book as you read it. We are to embrace our differences, understand who we are as individuals, and patiently capitalise on these 2 elements in order to succeed. — “Formulaic marketing is about combining, arranging, and blending the answers to these questions into a multi- pronged, deep-rooted effort to bring lift to your brand.” — Marketing has always been a distantly interesting subject to me, but I’ve never thought to impress it upon my personal life (I do not have a “brand” really — or so I thought). However, Certo serves a motivational prose leaving me with an awareness of image and a longing for self-refinement. I’d mainly recommend this for anyone within the startup industry or social media sector, but also to anyone that needs a constructive means of bettering themselves overall.
The author is appreciated for his hard work in compiling such bright essence in the words which are sometimes left unsaid and neglected. The book on such a theme is recommended for the young generation readers to look into their lives with a different perspective and observe how concoction of aspirations, failure and comebacks work.
On a larger perspective, this book becomes a guide that would give food for thought, enabling one to introspect one's own mistakes and improve them to step on to the mountain of victory.
The narration of this self help motivational genre is gripping enough to let the readers engage in the thoughts which author has portrayed in an essence of relevance. The personal touch to each and every chapter would pamper the readers with an intricate delicacy of an optimistic approach towards subtle negatives of life.
The book can be called as a reflection of the dreariness of human doubts and the crudeness of his uncertainty and expectations. The author has written a book that puts up ‘life’ in a very humane and sympathetic way that preaches to instill the values of faith and belief. Simplistic and straightforward, this book should be a great read.
This book makes us see new perspectives to how things can be handled by keeping people at the forefront, how leadership can be wonderfully maintained by embracing thoughtful emotions. It lays out the blueprints for better outcomes, and doesn’t become one of those boring, repetitive guidance textbooks.
What is marketing? How do you do it? What’s that one strategy that you must follow? (Spoiler alert, there is no single strategy. In marketing, one size never fits all according to the author, who is also the founder of a firm that helps other businesses in their marketing journey.
So what is Formulaic? It is the answer to the following question: ”Why people aren’t buying more?” and it addresses it by challenging the not-so-accurate answer: “I need to fix my promotion.”
To follow the Formulaic strategy, you have to address the following questions: 1) What choices have you made? 2) What do you value? 3) What’s it like to work in your company? 4) What’s your story? 5) How are you different? 6) Do you know who you serve? 7) What is it that you are selling? 8) Are you willing to publish? (My favorite part) 9) Does your promotional approach make sense? 10) Do you have patience?
To answer the questions, the author offers guidance, not a deep one, but scratching the surface and helping you to get on the right track to market your service/product. The reason why 8) is my favorite is that Matthew talks about the importance of businesses to teach their audience on social, for FREE. Gary Vee talks about that as well. Another favorite takeaway from this book is that the product itself is a marketing strategy. No matter how much you promote, if your product isn’t good, then you’re not on the right track.
This book is for marketers and business owners who want to their business to the next level.
Work culture and productivity, both have a brawny relationship between each other. These two stands out as two parameters for a company growth.
Holding this theme of growth here author Matthew Certo pens down his experience in this Unique read. Being a digital marketing stalwart one can find the specific choice of his words to show his thoughts clear-ful to his readers. Bright from his childhood he entered to the marketing world at very young age and throughout the years his experience and his learnings presents an important role in this book.
Why this?

The world is changing so the people's mindset. One formula that was working in the past doesn't seem to be effective later on. You can't hold it for long run. So the FORMULAIC presents itself as a must read book for those company members alongwith the marketing personalities so that they can reach their goal and dream easily and effectively.
You know it when you see it: when you’re in a store, a restaurant, a hotel, or the lobby of an architecture firm that’s doing extremely well. Perhaps it’s the corporate equivalent of an athlete who is “in the zone.” You can actually feel it.
The goal of any business is to make money. But in this fast-moving world, it's easy to get caught up in the "noise" of what everyone else is doing and lose sight of what is truly important. You could be doing everything right in your business, but if you're not measuring the right things, you may still be missing the mark when it comes to achieving your goals.
Marketing in the 21st century is about so much more than creating ads and running campaigns. Today's marketers must be digitally savvy, socially aware, and most importantly, they need to understand the needs of their customers.
The book is well-organized and easy to read, It is filled with stories about brands who have used specific marketing strategies to grow their businesses. names like Chobani, Lululemon, Nike, Starbucks, YETI, La Croix, Patagonia, and others) The book isn't just theory, but gives real-world examples strategies and tactics of leading brands of the world.
Formulaic is very insightful. I would recommend it to any executive or entrepreneur who wants to better understand the potential of marketing, and how to implement a plan that will help their company grow.

I’m a stay at home mom with a bookstagram hobby. How can a book about marketing be helpful? But I was SO wrong and I’m so glad I took the time to read this small but powerful book.
@mcerto has been in the marketing business for a very long time. In today’s age, the marketing environment is changing almost on the daily but he reminds us that even with all the new tools and metrics, sometimes going back to the basics are the things that truly make a difference. This quote on the back of the book by Karl Droppers says it all, “Formulaic brings us back to the foundational questions of why, what, and how we do things in our business.”
Honestly, I learned so much from this little read. I feel like I am not only a better consumer, knowing what to look for in a company that cares about their business, but also better on the business side of things as well. I know a lot of small business owners that I would definitely recommend this book to. It’s helpful no matter the size of your business! And one thing I kept coming back to is this is even helpful for me as a bookstagrammer. If you own a business for sure pick this up! It’s short, pack full of amazing information, and is so easy to follow and understand. I will definitely be recommending it to all my small business owner friends!

There are tons of marketing books that boast cutting edge strategies and empty promises of achieving immediate results, but are simply reiterations of one another. This is not one of those books!
‘Formulaic’ explains how thriving companies market from their core. By understanding your company’s values, defining your culture and having the courage to be different, you can better connect with the right consumer base in order to achieve organic, long-term success.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the prevalence of real-life examples of how large and small companies have succeeded or failed based off of the marketing strategies and tactics they used in the ever-changing business world. This book is foundational in nature, and offers easily implementable strategies that any size business can put into practice to thrive and achieve extraordinary results.

One thing: If you know the right formula, you are closer to the answer.
Yes! Right formula is no doubt a key to tackle a problem to get positive results.
The author Mathew W Certo states that there are different key elements that are interconnected and responsible for a business growth and sales, the interconnection of these important elements make a recipe - a formula.
Formulaic presents a real life instances to provide the insights about marketing strategies and human behaviour in serving sectors.
The relation between originality, serving the costumer what they want and pressure of competition in market has been discussed as the whole inter relation.
My view Budding entrepreneur must read, this book is a formula for entrepreneurship but if you are seeking a book about depression, it’s not for you lol. You should know what to read and when to read.
Personally loved this book, it seemed to me that this read could help me in my entrepreneurial Journey.
So let me start this book review with an interesting case study. At first, the colognes were promoted as something that hides a stinky body. This had a poor impact on sales of colognes because people were reluctant to accept that they could stink. After putting some thought and research, the company started promoting it as something that spreads fragrancing odor. And voila!! Who doesn't want to smell great?
Formulaic is one of the finest books I have read on marketing. It is not what the business does that makes people use it. Instead, it is the story behind why it does what it does make people use it. This book talks about the business tactics of different major companies across the world. I personally relate to this book when it comes to buying products. It clearly points out that it is not always the early entrant who wins. It is the one that positions the product well wins.
The book is well-paced, making every word of it engaging. I recommend every entrepreneur out there to read this book. Kudos Matthew Certo.
I have read several marketing books in my life but it is usually really hard to apply their concepts in real life for your small business due to the lack of budget, manpower or expertise. This book in particular really stood out to me because you can really tell that Matthew is an expert in the field and he has dealt in the past through his company with both small and big businesses. Furthermore, he has done a great job in researching and studying how huge companies such as Starbucks, Nike or Patagonia were able to use marketing to create impactful and lasting brands. From here, he derived core concepts that can be applied to any business in several situations. The book was written in such a way that anybody can understand it and take advantage of its principles. The writing style is captivating and very enjoyable. I found this really hands-on and full of practical examples. Speaking for myself that I'm starting my own business I can say for sure that I will come back to it anytime that I will run a new campaign.
The main idea of the book is that marketing is not just about the product and its promotion. It is much more than that. «Formulaic will place more emphasis on ensuring that your marketing ‘’engine’’ is functioning well, every improving, and generating more demand for your product or service than you ever thought possible».

What makes you so unique that people want to tell others? ⊹ Do you know who you serve? What are their demographics? What are their hobbies? What are their lifestyle choices?
I really enjoyed the book! It was a short and fun read. I learned a lot of great insights about marketing that I will use in my life projects!
As a business owner, it’s easy to lose sight of the things that matter. Things like company culture, your mission, & making sure you’re hiring people that are truly aligned with your brands mission.
This book teaches us how to build all 3 plus so much more. Here’s a few of my favorite takeaways:
Hire people who live, breathe & your company culture. Ex: If creating a bookstore, hire a passionate book reader who’s obsessed with books.
State facts about your company. Not cliches. Ex: Instead of “We have the best quality service.” say “We have a 5 star rating on TripAdvisor.”
Create a Brand Mirror - answer these questions on paper: If our brand was a celebrity, who would it be? How does our brand speak - funny, formal or serious?
While the writing of this book wasn’t the most enjoyable, the gems make up for it & it’s definitely a great read for every business owner & marketer.
Giving this book 5 stars because of how well explained it is. The author Matthew W. Certo shares a lot of information that will help businesses grow. He explains his definition of culture differently than others I’ve read before, and I loved that.
“Culture is about expectations, norms, rules, and a shared understanding. Culture is about a common agreement concerning how we operate, how we roll, how we do things here. It’s about creating a framework for how we will do things that we all agree to.”
There are so many books out there about business and marketing, if you’re new and want to read a smooth understandable book, try this one. It has good information and inspiring ways to help your business thrive.
There are a lot of books out there that claim they have the secret formula for transforming your business, but how do you know if they are legitimate? I have found a good rule of thumb is if anyone promises a quick fix or a small tweak that will produce massive results, they are probably deceiving you. Formulaic does the opposite. Matthew promises no quick fixes but rather a strategy that requires hard work, patience, and a laser focus on the most critical components of the plan. He shows that if you follow the plan and market from the core, you can see tremendous results. As a business owner myself, his message hits home and has me rethinking how we should be marketing to our potential customers.
The book urges that there is a missing connection tissue between the product and the promotion which prevents a business from thriving. The book shares with us, how the process of marketing works and how a company or an organization can make it successful for itself along with providing us the real examples of big companies.
The perspective of the book is very clear, how one can make their business successful. The book is very engaging, making a reader hooked with the examples or case studies given in the book.
The book provides a formula that will definitely help any growing business to achieve remarkable results. The book helps a reader earn great knowledge and understanding about the business tactics and formulations.
