Soulmates, does their love last through death, eternity and the afterlife? How does one go on when the other leaves this life for the next? Where and how does the deceased wait? Is there true peace, if and before they are reunited? Will they really be rejoined in the eternal beyond? What if one finds another love in life? N.D. Jones’ BOUND SOULS is a tale of two souls, united in life, vowing an eternal bond and what happens when one goes on, leaving the other without closure.
Zion and Lela were meant for each other, even though they came from different planets. When Zion faced death long ago, the Fates granted him more time, but his time was up and they both knew the day had come, one unintentional mistake on Zion’s part would leave Lela adrift with a broken heart, unable to fulfill her own destiny in life and now, once again, the Fates must step in. Zion has been adrift, a restless soul and it is up to him to let go of Lela and grant her the ability to let go of him until they meet again for eternity. What they require of Zion will test every fiber of his being to do the right thing, no matter how desperately it hurts and how much he will have to give up. Will he set Lela’s heart free to live and love again? Will she then be able to fulfill her destiny?
N.D. Jones has pulled out all of the stops on this emotional and fascinating read that almost begs each reader to immerse themselves in each page, each scene and in the hearts of every character. Certainly not a fast-paced or action-packed tale, the action is through the turmoil each character feels. So very sad at times, so very uplifting at other times, this tale is one of love, loss, understanding and trusting one’s heart enough to let go until, once again, these soulmates can be together.
Wonderfully written highly charged with intense emotions, feel the power of love, witness destiny and fate play out before your very eyes, thanks to the heartfelt writing of N.D. Jones.

What I like about the characters Lela and Zion in this novel is their deeper, undying spiritual connection they have for each other and there's an underlying uniqueness to it that's rare, captivating and beautiful in its context and symmetry. Their interaction and conversations with each other were so soulfully written that in itself was a skill of valiance I found most appealing and the author N.D. Jones did this with such flawlessness that it made it poignant, stratospheric and seductive at the same time. Brilliance would be in an understatement in this review. But this book leaves me with a loss for words to describe it.
This book was simply beautiful. Relateable. Anybody who has lost a loved one can relate, can sympathize with the characters, can hope that the authors version of afterlife truly exist and we will see the ones we love again working out the misunderstandings of this life. I was truly invested in the characters, the raw emotions, the conflict of emotions were so real. This is a romance but I think its principles extend to more than romantic love, foreshadowing this a classic read that will stand the test of time.
I did want Ammon to have a soul tie to someone, who could love him back just as fully perhaps in his next lifetime.
There's something about a read that can get you to bond with your characters. You feel what they feel. You experience the thick of it all. The writing itself take you on a journey. Watching the ups and downs for two fated lovers makes for an adventure all on its own outside of the overlying story. This was filled with much for me. I took my time and allowed for things to settle in and the get my bearings. We are all familiar with the notion of fated mates. We are all familair with the lore/legend that comes with fated mates. But have we ever took a look at what happens when the lore and legend gets some of those notions wrong? Have we ever questions what happens when a fated mate lives after the demise of their mate? Jones shows another side of fated mates and the struggles that could result from such a things. The struggle to come back together. The struggle to find a way.
One of my favorite authors of fantasy is Mitch Albom, and I’m happy to say I’ve found another favorite in the same genre—N.D. Jones. OMG, this story was so beautiful and masterfully written, it’s the greatest climax the mind could ever receive.
When a person meets “the one,” it doesn’t matter what happens in this life or the next, you can’t help but wonder will those souls be bound even in death? This is a question that was best answered by our loveable characters, Lela and Zion. Their bond was so strong it most definitely stood the test of time.
After thirty years of wedded bliss to her human husband and soul mate, Zion, the Fates deemed it necessary for Zion’s time on earth to end. Lela didn’t want her husband to die and Zion didn’t want to go. He would be losing the love of his life, and his son, Xavier. However, everything that lives will eventually die, and even though the lovers knew this, it was a bitter pill to swallow.
One tough lesson Lela and Zion had to learn is what making a promise means. The last thing a person dying should ever do is make the survivor promise to do something after they’re gone. That “something” like never loving another person and/or being with someone else after they have extinguished. Zion was wrong for that on so many levels, and what was more astounding, Lela was willing to do it. Is it fair for a spouse to ask his mate to never love another? What was Lela to do? Be by herself for the rest of her life and continue to grieve for Zion’s loss? To never experience love and happiness ever again? How selfish could you be?
Well, as luck would have it, Zion was extremely selfish and stubborn. He refused to let his wife go even in death so what he does next takes the reader on a tidal wave of emotional turmoil. How far will Zion go to be with his soul mate? Only time will tell. And time was something Zion had an abundance of. Jones wrote the hell out of this book! The struggles and emotion that Lela and Zion go through felt so real and makes the reader feel so alive. These are characters you will enjoy going through the motions with. You want to know what makes them tick and how they deal with very real-like issues. Jones attention to detail and her poetic prose to the love Lela and Zion share, is so beautifully written. With each novel she writes, the storylines and characters get better with each word.
This was a dynamic read. If you are in love with ‘love’ and have an appeal for sci-fi and fantasy, readers you need not look any further because you will NOT go wrong with this one! And might I add Jones writes a love scene so eloquently. She knows just what to say to put the reader in the driver’s seat. Well, well, well done! Awesome read and one I’m sure our readers will enjoy. Bound Souls is free on Amazon right now. Not sure how long it will last, so get it while the getting is good. Great job, Jones. Looking forward to the rest in the series! Thanks for the free download! Giving the gift of reading is one of the greatest gifts of all!
I railed against the Fates for taking me too soon; almost accepted that I would never marry; never lost faith or hope that I would win the love of my life; could not forgive my father for abandoning me and my mother without saying goodbye; my life was shattered and my heart broken far too many times for anyone to endure in a lifetime ... A summary of the emotions of the five main characters from my point of view, in an intricately woven tale that spans several lives and lifetimes. An exceptionally well written book and, quite simply, probably the most moving love story I have ever read. (I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review).
This book was so good. ND Jones is becoming an autobuy author for me. Every book of hers that I read touched my heart. The bonds in this book between husband and wife, friends, lovers, and family made this book worth reading. I don't want to say too much and ruin it but this book was definitely worth the one-click. I almost feel like I owe her money since it was free
This story was truly a surprise. While entertaining, it was uniquely thought provoking. I often think about the afterlife and whether we're really living a before-life right now. And I wonder if we'll be united with our soulmate or soulmates. There are some very moving parts of the story. Anyhow, if you like SciFi that's more thought provoking than sensational then you'll want to read this.
I received a complimentary copy of the book through eBookDiscovery in exchange for an honest review.
The is the first book by N.D. Jones I have had the pleasure to read and I had no idea what I was in for. This book was an emotional, thought provoking read for me. There were a few places that were slow reading for me. I found the characters and story line to be well developed and enjoyable. I look forward to reading my by Ms Jones. I recommend this book.
The concept of soul mates is not a new one. Plato explored the idea in his Symposium and it is a concept present in much romantic fiction. Typically, however, soul mates are people fated to be together throughout time, even before they meet. That is a nice, romantic, idealistic notion, but I think I prefer ND Jones' take on the subject. In Bound Souls, we are introduced a literally alien culture. There are rituals for all things, especially those pertaining to mating, and one of those rituals allows a mated pair to bind their souls together so that they will be guaranteed to be together after death. The trouble arises when one spouse still lives after their soul-bonded mate dies. How that knot is untangled involves the meat of the story, so I will allow the reader to explore that for themselves.
The setting, while definitely alien, is internally consistent enough that I did not feel like I couldn't understand what was going on. My occasional confusion arose from the flashbacks throughout the novel because I did not realize I was reading about the past at first and that popped me out of the flow of the story the first couple of times. Without giving any spoilers I do feel I need to say that the ending was a little schmaltzy for my taste. For a romance novel about bound souls, there are no explicit sex scenes, so the book can be enjoyed by readers 14+ who enjoy a philosophical take on the afterlife.
An amazing story that challenged my thinking about life-after-death. The story is not the least bit preachy, though the author's well-thought-out beliefs provide a firm foundation. In many ways, the story put me in mind of the movie The Preacher's Wife. Like the movie, Ms Jones doesn't tell you anything, she simply shows you everything. Well done. I received this book free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
Lela is grieving over her husband and has shut everyone out but the fates still have bigger plans for her. I love how the author goes deep into Lela role and how she affects her home world. I also love how the author goes deep into the after life . can't wait for book two!!!!
This was a very well written and imaginative story about two soul mates, Zion and Lela, and their journey back to each other. This is different from the other works I've read, by Jones. The tone was sad and heavy at times. During the first 15% of the book I had to take a couple of breaks. Her soul mate died ( that's not a spoiler, it's in the synopsis). I was overly emotional about it because The writer is so talented that I could feel the ferocity that he loved Lela with, but he had to go. I'm getting teary-eyed again. Anyway, I won't give too much away. The writing is excellent, there is some humor to break up the heaviness, and it does end with a HEA. This is a smut less book. The sex scenes are implied or not in graphic detail. I have a daughter in high school who likes romance and emotional reads. I would let her read it. 5 big meant-to-be stars! Great job N.D.
I wasn't sure about this story when I started. I am not a big fan of science fiction and wasn't sure how a love story would be in this genre. I am glad that I read this story. It was so beautiful. It was more than a love story. It was a person journey story as well. And it really made me feel. The main characters Asiya & Zion are soul mates and you feel. But like real life their relationship and lives aren't perfect. Especially when one of them dies. But they have a bond that can't be broken. That is all I am going to give away. This is a well worth it read. I suggest this to anyone who wants to read a story that will make them fully feel. Warning, have tissues ready.
This is a wonderfully and uniquely written story about a love triangle that is both out of need and selfish desires. The writing and editing is done with exceptional care ❤. I enjoyed reading this futuristic fantasy.
I liked this book because it was nice to think of a future where the human race was not divided by color. However, I loved the book for the ideas presented. Primarily those of love, friendship and soul mates. Also, the setting was very good too.
My feelings about this book are very ambivalent. On one hand, it was a unique romance with a really nice exploration of grief. On the other hand, it was boring and I didn’t actually care about the romance. Instead of following a purely romantic plotline, Jones examines what grief can do to a person. Zion never really addressed the death of his first wife and made a lot of mistakes while he was dying, mistakes his family had to deal with. Parts of this were so fascinating and other parts were … at one point the author says, “she lived. She laughed. She loved,” and I had to put the book down. Overall, very cool concept and I’ll read more from this author.
I enjoyed reading this book but it actually is not my favourite by this author. I can't actually put my finger on it but It just didn't grab me by the throat like they normally do.
Having said that, this is another well written book with wonderful characters that come alive on the pages. The descriptions of the characters and different places are just so imaginative. You can really feel the emotional side of this story but there are also some humorous parts as well.
So, maybe not "my" favourite but i liked it enough to want to read the next one.
Note: This novel was provided to me by the author, in exchange for an honest review. And I honestly LOVED it!
I started this book with mixed feelings. In fact, I stopped reading it after about 100 pages. But then, after taking care of some other book reviews, I returned to this novel, having decided to give it another chance. And I'm so glad I did, too! I started from the beginning again, and this time, was able to finish it. I very much enjoyed it, as well!
What I had initially objected to was the way the love triangle in this novel was handled by Jones. I wasn't very comfortable with that. I won't say more, as I don't want to include any spoilers. However, the second time around, I was able to move beyond this to an appreciation of the great love that both Zion and Ammon, the two male protagonists, felt for Lela, the female protagonist.
Zion, Lela's first husband, was from Earth. From the descriptions in the novel, it became apparent that he was also an African-American.
Ammon, like Lela, was from the planet of Asiya. The inhabitants of this planet have an unspecified ethnicity, and are much like humans.
Although Lela was bound to Zion for eternity, she also loved Ammon. Her relationship with him was no less beautiful than the one she had with Zion, although she was unable to give her heart fully to Ammon. Still, she loved him as much as she was capable of loving him.
I did feel sorry for Ammon. As Lela's second husband, he was well aware that her heart totally belonged to Zion, but his love for Lela was unconditional, so he gladly accepted what she was able to give him.
This is a science fiction romance novel, so the emphasis is on the romance. Thus, it's not a fast-paced novel. Initially, this was another thing that bothered me. During the second reading, I saw and felt that the gentle pacing was just perfect for this particular story. This is, after all, a character-driven novel. It's the characters' emotions and thoughts that are important.
The narrative opens with an argument between Zion and Lela, a few years before his death. It closes with a beautiful, peaceful reconciliation/reunion between them. In between, we go through all of Lela's tumultuous feelings right along with her, as she tries to come to terms with Zion's passing, as well as her acceptance of Ammon as her second husband.
I loved both Zion and Ammon, each being wonderful in his own way. I loved how much they each loved and treasured Lela. Both men also accepted Lela as the strong woman she was. As Regent of the planet of Asiya, Lela was indeed in a powerful position, and they respected that.
The secondary characters were wonderful as well! I especially liked Sage, Zion's sister. She and Lela were not only sisters-in-law, but also best friends. Their relationship was truly special. If Sage often came across as a bit domineering (she was constantly urging Lela to move on, as 7 years had gone by after Zion's death), it was because she truly cared for Lela, and wanted her to be happy. Sage also loved her brother, and missed him terribly. This became very evident when he unexpectedly revealed himself to her, asking for her help in helping Lela to move on.
I also loved Xavier, Zion and Lela's son. He, too, was very concerned about his mother, and was very devoted to her. I felt for him, too, as he struggled with the circumstances of his father's passing, which had left him feeling embittered and angry.
The world-building in this novel is very well done, although I did feel that it could have been more detailed. However, readers can still get a feel for the world and culture of Asiya, which are both fascinating! I especially liked all of the rituals involved in courtship. They were absolutely beautiful!
Interestingly, there seem to be references to Greek mythology with the presence of the three Fates. These are the closest thing to gods that the Asiyans have. As in Greek mythology, the Fates control the destiny of all Asiyans, and, of course, the destiny of any off-worlders married to Asiyans, as well.
I also found it interesting that Lela's first husband is named "Zion". This is also the name of a specific mountain located near the city of Jerusalem, and the name is often used as a synonym for the city itself. Furthermore, in the Rastafari religion, which developed in Jamaica in the 1930s, the name "Zion" refers directly to Ethiopia. So there's symbolism involved in the name of this character.
I also thought that Zion's last name, "Grace" was very significant. I think it refers specifically to the grace of God, which He abundantly bestows on His children. It also has something to do with the concept of elegance and refinement in the carrying out of one's duties. Certainly Zion, as a diplomat assigned to the world of Asiya, possessed these qualities.
Lela's second husband is named "Ammon". (He has no last name; Asiyans are instead identified by their Houses, or clans.) This name actually refers to "an Iron Age Semitic-speaking nation occupying the east of the Jordan River, between the torrent valleys of Arnon and Jabbok, in present-day Jordan." (Source: Wikipedia) The Ammonites are mentioned in the Bible, in Genesis 19:37-38. "It is stated there that they descended from Ben-Ammi, a son of Lot through incest with his younger daughter. Bén'ámmî, literally means "son of my people"." (Source: Wikipedia article mentioned above)
These two names are significant for a reason. I would guess that they are meant to express the initial, strong rivalry that existed between Zion and Ammon. After all, in the Bible, the Hebrews were always contending with pagan nations. The Wikipedia article referenced above also points this out. "Throughout the Bible, the Ammonites and Israelites are portrayed as mutual antagonists. During the Exodus, the Israelites were prohibited by the Ammonites from passing through their lands. The Ammonites soon allied themselves with Eglon of Moab in attacking Israel."
How fascinating that, in this novel, Zion and Ammon, who were initially rivals, eventually came to a peaceful resolution in their mutual love for Lela, although Zion was the one she was bound to for all eternity.
The name "Sage" is also significant. Not only is this an aromatic plant, but the noun is also defined as "a profoundly wise person". (Dictionary.com) So this is a very appropriate name for Lela's sister-in-law. Not only did she do her best to soothe Lela's sorrow, which is something that alludes to the aromatic plant, but she also provided Lela with excellent advice, and always had Lela's back.
This beautiful, heartbreaking story is also poetically and sensitively told. Using a third-person narrative with several POVs, Jones weaves a tale that is vividly real, vividly poignant. It also becomes depressing at a certain point, as it seems that Lela will never be able to move beyond her sorrow. But then, the tone of the story changes to one of hope, and ends on this note. Even though the author's take on the afterlife is totally alien to me, I was able to appreciate the fact that everything came to a lovely conclusion. The great romantic cliche that "true love always wins out in the end" was beautifully depicted.
This is such an emotionally powerful novel! It's also a very philosophical one, as several themes are touched upon, such as life after death, the enduring power of love, the ideal of peace among all lifeforms in the universe, and the impact of one's legacy on future generations.
I've never read an SF novel like this one before. When I finished reading it, I did indeed feel as if I had lived this life, as if I, like Lela, had had to deal with the passing of a beloved spouse, as well as the conflicting emotions elicited by another. By the end of the book, all of the characters felt like family, with all of the lovable qualities and flaws typical of families. I was, of course, very sorry to see all of it come to an end.
At the back of the book, the author has included a beautiful short story titled "The Garden". This story was the seed from which Bound Souls sprang into full form. It focuses on the same theme as the novel, but resolves the central issue in another way. And, it, too, was very beautiful!
I highly recommend this novel, which I'm sure I will re-read at some point in the future. I am also planning to read the other PNR novels written by this highly-talented author!

This was a truly depressing book, pain and misery through the whole thing. I had to force myself to finally finish it and hope for a happy ending, which was only for the main characters I really felt for the second husband's soul in this book. It sounds like his is just going to wander forever. Depressing.
DNF at 43%, I just can't get into this story, I really wanted to like it but it's too predictable. It's described as science fiction/fantasy but it more like a sappy, boring romance masquerading as fantasy/science fiction. Maybe I'll try later but I doubt it
I just lost my husband after having him in my life for almost 50 yrs. This book was a surprise and cathartic for me. I shed many tears as I followed Zion and Lela's love story. The prose was profound and the images beautiful. So many opportunities lost when we could have conveyed our love for one another, comforted our soul mates, opened our hearts more deeply, loved more fiercely. All are portrayed and explored in this book in beautifully, eloquently written language. I am comforted by the idea of reuniting with my husband again in the way explained in the book.
I did know what to expect with this author, as it was the first book I read from her, but I was most impressed! She took the love triangle and turned it inside out! The pact between Zion and Ammon was amazingly put together ... the scene when the wedding bands were sacrificed brought me to actual tears! The role of the Fates was a great twist as well! This was a great read!
It took me a year to read this book. The mating of souls, rituals before mating and other eccentric practices were a bit much. Zion and Ammonia, who both loved Lela, were somehow in the same body. This is not my genre of choice.
I was a little surprised by this one. You don't expect to have the hereafter explained to you in a novel, but N. D. Jones displays her Masters of Divinity in this one. In addition to a long life shared with two beautiful men, our heroine, Lela can only choose one as her soul mate--to be reunited with in death. If I had been given a death sentence, I'd want this book by my bedside. It Is promising. It is purposeful. It is comforting! It does get slow in places as Ms. Jones gives us as much detail as she can imagine and that detail is beautiful. We forget about getting to the good places once we realize that it's all good and it's just what our soul needs. Intensely creative! Great job, Ms. Jones!
