The Quick and the Rest is a book founded on the idea that poetry is more fun than you think. We set out to create an accessible and enjoyable reading experience through a series of essays, drawings, short screenplays, paintings, improv comedy, crosswords, menus, photography, and short fiction from a brilliant collection of writers and artists determined to show you a good time. By providing a wide range of real reactions to the 12 poems featured, our contributors run the gamut from funny to bizarre, and from anger to heartbreak.
Incredible creativity and skill combine to make poetry more accessible. I love the imagery in the poems, and I am amazed at the rich textures from the people responding to the poetry. So many different forms of expression, each with its own interpretation of a poem by Nathan Armstrong, with skillful design and layout choices by Dana Crawford. A massive undertaking, done with skill and love. Possibly the most amazing thing is the gathering of so many talented, creative Chicago (mostly) thirty-something’s in one place. Worth the many years it took to shepherd this project to such an incredible conclusion. Thank you.
