This is the very first Manga book that I have read. Initially, it felt rather strange reading this book from back to front, but I soon got used to that.
The Royal Tutor is a series of books about the 4 princes Kai, Bruno, Leonhard and Licht. Heine Wittgenstein has been appointed as Royal Tutor to the 4 princes. Volume 2 continues the princes education about life etc. Heine takes the princes on an outing into Weinner, the capital city of the kingdom, so that they can observe the lives of the people. The following day they have an audience with their father, the king. The king tells Leonhard that he has to retake the competency test. The abysmal score of 1 is totally unacceptable and in the next test Leonhard has to attain a score of at least 60. His father tells Leonard that if he does not achieve a score of 60, he will be stripped of his claim to the throne. Unfortunately, Leonhard really struggles with arithmetic and has only 3 days before he resits the test. How on earth can he manage to improve his score?
Even though the princes are rivals for the throne, they have a really strong bond and will help each other out. When Kai needs help to overcome his socialising problems, the other 3 princes all give him advice.
Bruno and Licht are forever quarrelling and Heine tries to help them sort out their differences.
A well thought out book looking at how problems in life can be overcome. There is a lot of humour in the book and I had a really good chuckle. All in all an excellent book with great graphics.
Many thanks to the author, Higasa Akai and the Hachette Book Group, for providing me with a free copy through the Goodreads giveaway scheme, in return for my honest and unbiased review.
Rating: 4.5 Stars: ★★★★ 1/2 (maybe 5?? IDK I'll have to give it more thought!) Finally read Vol. 2 to The Royal Tutor! I love this manga series so much!!😍💕 In Vol. 1 we get introduced to the princes and while they aren't a fan of Heine as their tutor in the beginning, they see just how dedicated he is to helping each of them!
Vol.2 is definitely more character-driven which I absolutely loved! It also expands more on the Kingdom of Granzreich when in the first chapter, the princes & Heine go for a stroll in town as part of an assignment!
What I loved about the first chapter was seeing the princes explore the city and just get to know them outside of the palace! + I loved how they teamed up in the end to take down a purse thief~ The trip allowed them to experience something new and they have a better understanding of the people who live within their kingdom!
The next few chapters brings us back to what happened in volume 1 when Prince Leonhard failed his exam. We get introduced to the king (King Viktor) as he gives some tough words of guidance for each of the princes (Which does guide a few more of the chapters within this volume).
Especially, to Prince Leo! If he isn't able to pass his exam after a re-take, the king will renounce Leo's claim to the throne!
Throughout this chapter and many others within Volume 2, we see the strong brotherly bond that is between each of the princes! Whether their stopping a purse thief, helping each other study, or just giving each other advice, what I loved so much about this volume is we see so much more to the tight-knit bond they have with each other and that they are always willing to work together!
Seeing my princes all support each other & work together, brought tears to my eyes! (They are all just--so precious!!) 😭💕 From helping Leo to his exam, to helping Kai be more social! They were always willing to help each-other and offer their advice (no matter how silly!)
There's also just a little more information unlocked into Heine's backstory! It turns out that the king already knows Heine. We don't get much more than that, but I'm excited to see where the plot is headed in terms of our Royal Tutor.
The Royal Tutor delivers backstory and development in such a brilliant way where it never feels forced or conveniently placed! The plot is unfolding in such a natural way where your getting world-building, character-development, and mysteries at the most perfect moments in the story, just when you least expect it!
Aside from the wonderfully developed plot, what I also adore about The Royal Tutor so much is the characters, Heine, the princes: Kai, Bruno, Leo, & Licht, and the king! Their personalities shine and develop with each page, both separately and all together!
The Royal Tutor is also brilliant with comedy! I found myself re-reading pages because the hilarious situations and perfect moments of humor are delivered so wonderfully!
My only critique (which was mentioned at the very end in the "extras" page) is that I'm just really wanting more development from the world and setting! While the artwork and information we do get is weaved into the story very naturally, there's just more I wish was included to really bring the setting to life, even more!
Overall though, The Royal Tutor Volume 2 was incredible! The Royal Tutor continues to be one of my all-time favorite manga series and I am beyond excited to see where the story goes in Volume 3!

I’m really liking this series, actually. It was really unexpected since I just picked it up randomly at the library because I wanted a manga read, and went in not sure what to expect, but I’m really enjoying it. Once again, a content warning for suggestive dialogue :/ .
Despite the appearance of the king and talk of rivalry and succession, the mood remains light and fun with the princes going to town, then striving to improve themselves as candidates for the throne. Though Leonhard tends to draw the spotlight with his outspoken personality and staggering stupidity, Akai-sensei does a good job of helping us to get to know all the princes. As of yet, there’s no overarching goal other than Heine whipping them into shape, but for the moment, that’s entertaining enough.
The Review
Volume 1 presented our princely cast and their tutor, and now that the characters have been introduced, lessons can begin in earnest, starting with a field trip into town. That might seem like a strange place to begin, until we learn that only resident playboy Licht has any common sense about how to behave around commoners. Haughty and academically-challenged Leonhard easily lends himself to be made the fool, but all the princes provide something different to laugh at during their outing. In addition to the setting highlighting their foibles, they get to wear something other than their usual uniform-like garb, and readers get a sense of the type of city Weinner is.
Next, we meet the man who literally rules the place. There’s been no mention or sign of a queen (other than the granny Queen Mother), but there’s definitely a king. Given that 17-year old Kai is the second eldest son, I expected the king to be past his prime. Instead, he is a longhaired bishounen who could easily pass for one of his sons. His personality also veers more towards sentimental than kingly. Even so, he’s serious when he must be, and he and Heine share a past that they’re keeping from the princes.
Meanwhile, the princes are surprisingly eager to make their father proud. Given that they’ve driven so many tutors from the palace, I thought they would be more troublesome, but when the king points out areas of improvement, the princes immediately get to work on it. In addition, although the princes are rivals for the throne, they are more than willing to help each other out. So when the king threatens to strip Leonhard of his claim to the throne because of his awful test score, his brothers try to help him learn. When Kai expresses a desire to interact better with people, the other princes offer suggestions and encouragement. Thus, the story includes jokes about Leonhard’s epic stupidity and comic visuals of Kai’s attempts to be approachable, but backstabbing doesn’t play a part. As exemplified in Chapter 12 (the only chapter in this volume with no equivalent in the anime), the princes are brothers first and deeply care for one another’s well-being.
By the way, the quality of the illustrations remains top notch, with the style switching between elegant and chibi as the scene demands.
Extras include bonus manga printed on the inside of the cover flaps; first page printed in color; a note from the creator; and translation notes.
i-ii.
Why does there always have be a sex obsessed character that ruins a perfectly good manga series? WHY?!
Sex? No but one of the princes is obsessed on women's breast sizes & suggests that his brother would better memorize his math problems if they were written over women's cleavage. *shudder*
Swearing/Profanity? Some--2 uses of damn
Violence? No
Magic? No
LGBTQ + characters? Not specified.
Could a conservative Christian school library include it?
No--the breast discussion probably knocks this one out of consideration.
Cute second volume that definitely is making this a fun series. It's simple and fun and I love the plot. The characters are great and I can't yet figure out who my favorite is. I like the illustrations and layout. It was a well paced volume with good plot over all. I look forward to the next volume.
This is a fun way to introduce children to the wonders of personality. Kai, Bruno, Licht, and Leonhardt are the sweetest boys with incredible stories. Shou Yuduki is also apparently a manga artist for Square Enix (who is specially thanked in this volume).
Closing out the year with a good quick read, I would be ending 2022 with 20 books read (I don’t know why Berserk Volume 1 is listed twice).
Another great volume! I love the beautiful artwork and architecture. The palace reminds me of Versailles, and I reminisce about my time in Europe. We get to know the princes a little better in this volume. I really enjoy the character development and emotional artistry. I love that Square Enix artists were involved (I love their animation style) and also had a hand in this manga publication.
Watched this series on a whim last year and decided to try out the book series. So far it's cute but doesn't have much substance--but I didn't get into the series either for several episodes. Mostly, I'm looking forward to the points in the plot where the anime left off.
I wanted so badly for this series to work for me, but it failed. I kept wanting to get more of a story line other than than a tutor who can outwit, outrun, out-do-everything better than 4 teenaged boys.
I wish we had gotten more on Kai, as he's my favorite, but this was still a good volume. Although the ending of the final was a little anti-climatic, the more lighthearted chapters make up for it. Still a relatively fun read.
I want to squeeze Leonhard so much! He maybe not an academic and best on it, but, HE HAS MY HEART! so damn cuteeeeee!!!😭🌼🤣❣️ Bless his heart, he has a pure and innocent (also chaotic one, eh?) heart!❣️❣️❣️
