One of the things I like about reading Hannah Howe’s mysteries is that you really get to know the main character – the woman sleuth. In the “Ann’s War Mysteries,” you have a young woman whose husband is an RAF pilot during WWII, who’s disappeared behind enemy lines. In book #1, Ann Morgan’s boss, a private detective, is murdered. Now, in book #2, she’s toying with the idea of becoming a PI, herself. Her first case is dumped in her lap casually enough by a distraught mother whose daughter has disappeared. Meantime, an American GI has also disappeared. Ann quietly goes about finding out what happened. The war and its impact on the local community adds depth to these novellas. And there’s some added tension in the form of a handsome widower who seems interested in Ann even though she’s married. I’m hooked and can’t wait for the next installment.

Pleased to read more about Ann and her missing husband Emrys.
She is still tidying up the affairs of her former boss at the private investigating agency when she bumps into a mother concerns over her missing daughter.
Ann agrees to take on the task, and soon she is handing out business cards which she has to write in her personal details as the PI asking the questions.
Emrys boss keeps popping up and he supports her developing her detective skills and Max, the Detective Inspector also lends his support and advise. She appears a natural and needless to say she turns up the truth in a suspicious death.
In book 1 I was critical of the plot. The story again is well written but the premise does come up short in terms of reactions and Ann’s influence.
I did like the concept of sexual tension, typified but the Yanks over here and over sexed. The author extends this to include Ann’s feelings clinging to the hope of her husband being alive in France. Meanwhile Ann appreciates other handsome men and Max makes his move and it is a will she, won’t she moment.
I did like the indiscretion Charles Montagu shares about his experiences of going to war during the 1914-1918 conflict. Men will be men and soldiers will always be soldiers perhaps. He also intimates that Ann might be able to share his work. This seems to imply she may take PI and turn it into SPY. My only concern being that she would be sent to Europe and rescue Emrys. This would be a little too perfect in the world of love and war for me and have me reaching for an Antony Beevor novel.

Love the characters and storyline. Just say to say living in Wales during the war. Not sure what would happen next!

The Ann's War Mystery Series is a series of five novellas set in 1944-5. Each story contains approximately 15,000 words and a complete mystery. The stories are: BETRAYAL, INVASION, BLACKMAIL, ESCAPE and VICTORY. The stories are set four months apart and will be published four months apart, so you can read them in 'real time', if you wish. However, you may prefer to read the books 'as one' after the publication of VICTORY. Please make a choice based on your reading preference. Kindly note that each mystery is resolved within one story, and that Ann's story arc will be resolved over the five books.

About INVASION

After reading the first book in the series and “getting to know” Ann - a young woman unwittingly turned private investigator - I couldn’t wait to see what awaits her next and picked up book two as soon as it came out. The background setting of the wartime UK in this riveting mystery is another wonderful aspect for me personally as a reader. Being a huge history buff, I loved not only the authentic atmosphere but certain historical details, dotted throughout the narration, which made me enjoy the story even more.
In book two, Ann tries to go on with her life after the murder of her boss and hopes for the safe return of her husband, an RAF pilot on a secret mission in France. But when an acquaintance asks her to look for her missing daughter, Ann reluctantly agrees, applying her admirable deductive skills to trace the girl. Nothing, however, can prepare Ann for what she is about to discover when a body is washed ashore, and it’s one of the American GIs, which very well may turn ugly for the locals…
Book two was so compelling that I literally read it in one sitting. Ann is a wonderful central heroine, and I already can’t wait to see what awaits her next!

Another short mystery from Hannah Howe that makes a reader think. This one tells the story of a missing girl and a missing soldier. What is the connection, if any? It's set in Wales during the end of WWII, with the Americans gearing up to invade Normandy. A message underneath the story is the war within people as they prepare for the physical battle against a country's enemy. How does this affect the soldiers? Does it change them into something they never were before? Or does it bring out something sinister that lies beneath the surface? Ms Howe's stories always leave you thinking about more than the tale she is telling you.

I'm enjoying this series so much! Book two picks up a few months after book one left off. Ann, a newlywed woman whose RAF husband was shot down across enemy lines, awaits word of his fate. In the meantime, she picks up the pieces of her life after her former employer--a private investigator-- was murdered. A friend asks for her help finding her missing daughter, drawing Ann into the mystery of a body washed ashore. As she investigates, she finds herself at odds with the handsome detective, Max Devereaux. Like the first book, Invasion leads to a satisfying conclusion while also leaving the reader eager for the next in the series. Well done!

Headline (Required)

To the author, I must say, nicely done. Again you put together a story during war time that is imminently readable, captures your attention from the word go, and last of all persuade us that we have to continue with her works to stay abreast of what’s going on in a wartime situation, and last but least, how good people must continue on while hoping their loved ones make it back home safely. Thank you Hannah Howe. You have me right where you want me. Figuring out which one is book three and put it at the top of my list for my reading pleasure. Many thanks for your efforts!

This short installment of Ann's journey through WW11 was enjoyable and entertaining.

The sense of place is well done in addition to some detective work. It's well written and is a sneak peek into this time in history.

Worth reading.
