Spy School #6

Spy School Goes South

Rate this book
Ben is taken to Mexico by his nemesis in the hopes that he’ll finally be able to take down SPYDER in this latest addition to the New York Times bestselling Spy School series.

Thirteen-year-old Ben Ripley has been caught in the snares of SPYDER more than once and knows well enough to be suspicious of anything that seems too good to be true—despite needing special tutoring in advanced survival techniques. So when Murray Hill finally breaks his silence with an offer to hand over the SPYDER elite, Ben knows that there must be something going on. But his hesitation doesn’t stop the assignment.

The Mission: Follow Murray Hill to an undisclosed location with no one else but Erica Hale to identify SPYDER leadership. Once found, contact the CIA to sweep in and finish the job. DO NOT CONTACT SPYDER DIRECTLY.

However, as Ben suspected, nothing goes as planned, and what should be an easy mission quickly turns deadly. Now, Ben and Erica will have to face rogue agents, trained killers, and even very hungry crocodiles in a race against the clock to find out what SPYDER is up to this time—and thwart their evil plans.

I need 4.5 stars for this one. It’s not a life-changing, wow’ed me 5,but close. I really think that Spy School is Stuart Gibbs’ best series. His characters in it are far more fleshed out, diverse, and interesting than in FunJungle and Moon Base Alpha...and I like those, too. But Erica and Ben’s missions to unmask and disarm SPYDER are always filled with interesting twists, great settings and even laughter. “Goes South” is no different. This time the duo is in Mexico and are joined by Mike and Zoe and a few others. SPYDER, of course, has plans to destroy things and make billions. Along the way, Gibbs gives us the Fifth Farkle Fabulous Fiesta and Aunt Edna plus radioactive mutant guanacos to make readers laugh until they cry, or maybe that’s just me. Libraries who have Stuart Gibbs’ books and readers who love them already need to continue buying them. Those who have not yet discovered Spy School could start with this one and work backwards or just go buy all six in one fell swoop. I recommend Spy School Goes South with no reservations. It is free of any profanity, sexual content and even the fight scenes are handled without blatant blood or gore. Thanks for the dARC, Edelweiss.

Author turned a fun story into a political statement, sadly too much politics injected into our lives!

Kid is a huge fan of the series, but very disappointed with this one. While main character Ben was fine, all the other characters seemed different... and not in a good way if you go back to the 1st book. It's as if Zoe and Erica have lost their main essence, qualities that helped make these books such a hit. The love triangles have gotten kind of bizarre and turning the characters nutty, near unlikable and unrecognizable. Still, kid's a loyalist and giving 3.5 stars.

I totally enjoyed this book. Why 2 stars? Making political statements to children against the president is a huge foul to me and poisoned the story. Although I agree with the statement, it is not to be pushed on unknowing chikdrem

I'm so happy this didn't go south.

Some things were a bit cheesy, but this is a middle grade spy novel, so it's pretty much expected. There was harsher language, similar to what was in book one, (all the alternative for crud, not awful) but at its core this was the same-one big fat beautiful joke.

Erica's development is really working for me honestly, and though Zoe and Ben got weird, their love triangle thing is still humorous and jokingly enough to make me borderline enjoy it (and I despise love triangles.) Mike was the same, but that's really okay. His line where they thought they were going to die for real to Ben was so sweet. And CATHERINE came back, which is great.

I was still having fun, reading earnestly, and laughing along through this, trying to read while my teachers were taking notes on the board. It was a lot more interesting than geometry and ancient India.

And as for the late Mrs. Gibbs, I hope you are alright wherever you are. I didn't know you passed away until the acknowledgements and I'm deeply sorry, Stuart Gibbs, if you ever see this.

Spy in training Ben Ripley is shocked when Murray Hill asks to speak to him. This junior SPYDER agent hasn't said a word since he's been captured several weeks ago, but now he has agreed to lead Ben to the evil organization's secret headquarters, but he will only reveal this location to Ben and Erica Hale after they have left. Unfortunately, Ben's suspicion that it might be a trap are proved true, and he and his friends find themselves stranded in Mexico. Is SPYDER really nearby? Can Ben stop their newest plan? Or will they even make it back to civilization?

Those familiar with this series will know exactly what to expect from this book, and they won't be disappointed. If you haven't found Ben's wonderful adventures, you are in for a treat. The action is non-stop with plenty of twists along the way that keep the pages flying. Yet there is still enough time for the characters to get some development. There is definitely more to them than we see on the surface. And there is plenty of humor; in fact, I might have been laughing out loud while reading one part. If you are new to the series, you might want to back up and read them in order. Trust me, you'll find yourself reading all of them and thinking of some kids you can pass these great books on to.

This series just keeps going in a downward spiral. It has exciting mysteries, plot-twists, and amazing characters. I'm just really dissapointed in the level of garbage they stuffed in what could have been a really great book.

This book is good not the best but not the worst I feel like there is to much happening and to much action in this book,I enjoyed reading but I don't like how there is so much action. So that is why I rated it a 3 stars I read the first Spy School book and It was better than this. But this book was interesting and good.

While I agree climate change may be a problem, ending a children’s book with a final note full of fear tactics in order to manipulate our thinking and telling us that we’re “sticking our heads in the sand” if we don’t agree with his politics and that scientists who don’t agree with him “don’t know what they’re talking about” is incredibly disgusting. It is the worst thing I can think of for an author writing books for young minds to do as we should be encouraged to think for ourselves.

If he wants to talk politics, alarm children, and scare us about the President’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Accords, there are a few things he should know:

The United States has cut its carbon emissions more than any nation in the Paris Accords and our carbon dioxide reduction is more than double the next closest nation. The Paris Accords were never about the environment as much as they were about money.

Even though I’m only a kid, I hope you’ll still listen to my voice.

I agree with Melanie Dulaney that this is an almost 5 stars book . It lacked the emotional definition of earlier books . Ben is now established in spy school so we are done with the drama of his old life vs his new life . His friend Mike is now part of his new life so that drama is spent. At times its was a bit silly and shallow but that is its genre --its a light- comical -action -tough girl -kids book .

Still I felt it was tastefully done and parts of the young teen emotions were authentic and real . It was a fun read and I did not once think of quitting but enjoyed it from cover to cover especially Gibbs message about Donald Trump and Climate Change .

I agree with Gibbs that all scientific research proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that unless drastic action is taken to reduce green house gas emissions and deforestation this world will be a shitty place to live in 75 years .
I am vegetarian , ride a bike , don't have a dryer -use a clothes line and grow local produce for my community. The meat industry generates more greenhouse gasses( methane and deforestation ) than all the cars , airplanes and coal fires power plants combined.
Trump and Bush have something in common --they both turn the USA in to a very unpopular nation with their irresponsible politics 👎. God gave human being the faculty of discriminationn between right and wrong if we dont use it we are no better than animals . Also cases of reincarnation have now been proven ( as per https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...) what people dont get is that they are not only condemming their grand children to live on a hot dry low oxygen planet but THEY will be reincarnating here themsleves . They will face what they have done and failed to do .

This book is my favorite in the series so far. I really liked the setting in this one, it was a nice change from the basic school setting and I enjoyed the touch of history. I loved seeing the characters develop even more throughout this book and it helped me understand their personalities even better. The plot line was very well written and the ending was also exciting to read. Overall this was a great read.

Stuart Gibbs never fails to deliver! The Spy School series is just so funny. Funny characters, funny adventures, funny evil plots... Sure, it's cheesy, but it's meant to be, so the dumbness adds to the humour. Not the best book in the series, not an amazing book with huge emotional value and morals and everything, but it was very, very entertaining.

Reccomended for long, boring car trips!

I liked this book and it's the current events behind it, but I just really did not like the romance. When you are in the middle of running away from someone who is shooting at you, you are not make last minute romantic confessions. You are going to be focused on not dying. But overall, it was pretty good and the plot was interesting. A nice blend of history, culture, and politics.

1) I want to teach here. What’s the third grade equivalent in spy school? I can teach sarcasm. I can teach French and Italian swear words.

2) I AM HERE for the author’s note on how climate change is REAL. His message to his young readers is amazing.

3) The dedication. 🥺

4) ZOE GETS HER MOMENT.

In many ways this was the best one so far of the series. Ben is beginning to realize that Erica is never returning his romantic ideas about them but Zoe is interested in him. SPYDER is one step ahead of them as usual but Murray has just offered to betray them so Erica and Ben are in a helicopter with Murray when everything goes south. Literally and figuratively. Fortunately(???) Mike and Zoe have hidden on the helicopter too. And off they go on what I think is the penultimate adventure in the series (note: I’m wrong. Hooray!) Even better was the afterword where Gibbs tells readers that Climate Change is a real threat and suggests a few things to do. For that reason alone, I am adding a star to this book. The acknowledgements add some sadness: it turns out that the author’s wife died suddenly just before publication. However, Gibbs gratefully noted that everyone immediately tried to help him and his children, which seems to include all the better known youth authors and others; and everyone he knew at his publishing house. It is really nice to know that youth authors are there for each other rather than competing with each other! I’ve met some before and got that same sense of camaraderie at ALA. This book is highly recommended but read this series in order or you won’t be able to keep track of who is who in this nutty series.

First of all, I would like to give my absolute condolences to the author for his loss. This was shocking, and I pray that he, Dash, Violet and the rest of his family will all live long lives and get to see a world where climate change has been controlled and elephants still roam the earth.

Unsurprisingly, this book was hilarious. I liked not ever being fully sure if Murray had changed or not, though he was an unquestionable scumbag. The tension between Zoe, Erica, and Ben was unexpected and welcome, but I have to take sides on this: Zoe x Ben for the win! Because no matter how Ben tries to slice it, it'll always be true Erica cares more about the mission than him.

Also, crocodiles! I don't know why, but despite always hearing about how crocodiles eating the agents comes up in stories, I never actually read a story involving them. Until now. That's one more thing checked off my bucket list.

I'm not entirely sure how to feel about the ending. This is really the first time it's ended in any type of cliffhanger, and Murray being the one leading it off feels kind of off. However, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book, which I'm pretty sure will have M16 involved. Maybe we'll see that annoying redhead from Spy Camp again, Claire.

Keeping an eye out for a Spy School movie!

This book wasn't just written to continue the series, this book also conveyed a deeper meaning. It was written at the time when Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement (the note at the back of the book tells the reader), because of this, the main problem/plot that SPYDER was going to do (of course Ben and his friends thwarted them) was to launch a lot of nuclear weapons on Antartica, to speed up global warming, because SPYDER thought that global warming "isn't happening fast enough". They also wanted to make a huge profit of the sea levels rising because they own a big construction company, which would earn a lot of money from the government for reconstructing buildings. They also own a large swath of jungle near a beach, so when the beach gets destroyed along with all the resorts on it, they would be able to sell the now "closest land to the water" for a huge amount. I think it's really cool how writers can write such interesting and amazing books, but also weave deeper meaning like global warming into their stories to inform the reader about the issue.

I was scared to read this book. I’ve loved this series and this author for years now, but one of my friends said this was the worst book Stuart Gibbs wrote. I’m happy I didn’t listen to him because, personally, I thought this one was pretty great. Except for some annoying romantic drama, this book flew by and captured me. I found myself craving the warm summer weather that is currently leaving my area.

I don’t know why my friend thought this book was so awful. I thought it was pretty funny and I’m really enjoying the addition of Mike onto the team. He’s a great character. I’m also enjoyed the fact that we learn A LOT about SPYDER in this book. I just want to spoil everything, but I know that’s not fair.

I’m super excited for book seven. Apparently it’s going to be the downfall of SPYDER once and for all! And, it’s takes place in England!!! So exciting!!!! I’m eagerly awaiting the next book, so Stuart Gibbs, PLEASE hurry!

This book was... quite something.
For one, we get to see some Mike action after the previous books, and Zoe begins to play a larger role in the story, giving Been some nice character development. Catherine also makes an appearance, and we can understand a bit more about her character as well. However, the humor begins to become more childish and the plot more tangled. I feel that this book focuses too little on the actual narrative, and just starts throwing in characters and adding plot twists with no real reason for them. This book falls short compared to the other books, both in plot and engagement, but the humor manages to make up for it, it only slightly.
Overall 3/5
Lacks charm and plot

Spy School Goes South by Stuart Gibbs is a great tale which includes an underlying theme that trust is something that can never be certain. An example of this is with an entire character: Murray. Murray went back on his promises to Erica and Ben several times, and made it clear that he could not be trusted. Even when the pair were almost CERTAIN that they could trust him, Murray betrayed them. Murray provides a great example of how trust needs can never be certain, as Murray was a conniving fiend who made everyone trust him, and then proceeded to backstab them several times.
The genre of Spy School Goes South is mystery, the setting is at the Aquarius Resort in Mexico, and the main characters are Zoe, Ben, Erica, Murray (the antagonist), and Mike. The book starts with the main character, Ben, at his school. This school is not an ordinary school though, it is a spy school of sorts. Ben is sent on a mission (something that spy school students are supposed to do, but happens very rarely) and this mission forces him to bring along Murray (his nemesis) and Erica. Zoe and Mike (his best friends and fellow spy school students) manage to get onto Ben’s plane, but the plane eventually crashes. The plane was rigged by Murray, who had made it seem like he had switched sides. As the book progresses, the students learn more about SPYDER’s (an evil organization that works for money) real plan. SPYDER planned to melt all of the world's ice caps so that their construction companies could make money off of it. Ben and his team work together to find out how to stop this explosion that would trigger the ice caps melting, and they eventually do so by stealing the button that would trigger this explosion.
I would rate this book as a 6/10. This book was the 6th book in the Spy School series and is easily the worst. This book’s plot seemed senseless, and there was very little character development. For example, SPYDER trying to melt all of the world’s ice caps seemed like an unrealistic plan, as nobody would benefit from the ice caps melting. Also, there were several characters, thought to be dead, that were brought back to life without a real reason behind it. One bodyguard was brought back to life just because “he was hard to kill.” Not to mention, one of the main villains, named Joshua, was brought back to life after falling HUNDREDS OF FEET INTO BURNING FLAMES IN THE LAST SPY SCHOOL BOOK. I felt as though the author was just trying to bring back popular characters for an easy read. This book was enjoyable to read, but once you think about its plot, you can realize just how childish and senseless this book was.
If I had to suggest this book to a certain age group, it would definitely be ten year olds who enjoy romance plots. This book was not fit for a middle school level, and seemed like a very easy read to me. However, for a 10 year old, it is just right. This book had action, suspense, and mystery in it, all things that ten year olds enjoy. However, only ten year olds who enjoy romance would enjoy this book, as there is a love plot between Zoe, Erica, and Ben. Zoe likes Ben but Ben likes Erica, and although Erica will never admit it, she cares for him a little too. Zoe and Ben know that they both like each other too. 10 year olds with a craving for romance will love this book.

Actual 4.5 . I still loved it but there was something that strained credulity about how Murray kept being so murderous bad to Ben , Erica , Zoey and Mike and then reintegrating so casually into the group and how Joshua was so sparing of them then wanting to kill them the then wanting to talk to them ... but that is the genre childs humor and I had enough child in me to laugh at the absurdity of it.

But I did love the romantic drama between Ben and Zoey
I also like and understand Erica's priorities she is what she has to be and does what she has to do I find it nobel and do respect it
And I loved and respected Gibbs message about climate change
I actually messaged ny state senator objecting to Trump's pulling teh uSA from the Paris Agreement
and confirming that I have carefully studied the works of scientists on climate crisis and I have no shadow of a doubt that climate crisis will make this earth a hot dry low oxygen place to live within 75 years . (it took 2 minutes )
Please go to your state senators website and hit the comment button and object to Trump's withdrawing the usa from the Paris Agreement and if you believe that Climate crisis is scientifically proven to be caused by fossil fuel emission , methane from live stock farming and deforestation say so and request action to mitigate climate crisis

Spy School Goes South by Stuart Gibbs opens with Ben getting the surprise of his life when Murray Hill, a young SPYDER agent who has been captured, asks to talk to Ben. In the weeks he’s been in custody, he hasn’t said a word, but now he has agreed to lead Ben and Erica to SPYDER’s newest secret headquarters. Of course, Ben is not sure he trusts Murray. His suspicion is proved accurate within a few hours, and Ben and his friends find themselves stranded in Mexico. The action in this sixth installment is non-stop as Ben and his friends face overwhelming odds, as usual. There are some developments in the characters’ relationships in this book that made the kids and I anxious to find out what happens to the characters next. As we have become accustomed, Mr. Gibbs includes plenty of humor. We found ourselves gasping at the latest plot twist in one sentence and then laughing at the ridiculous situation one of the characters is facing in the next. This was a great little audiobook, and we give it four alligators: 🐊🐊🐊🐊

When Ben and Erica get insight into where SPYDER is hiding, they are sent on a reconnaissance mission. However, as they fly into Mexico, things start going wrong. Rockets, hand-to-hand combat, grenade launchers, and more are in this action-packed novel. Will Ben and his team be able to save the day? I would recommend this book for people that want a novel that would keep them at the edge of their seats because this book has never-ending action. Also, the character development and Ben's thoughts throughout the book really add depth to the book and make the book even better. I would recommend this book for people that like action and adventure.

Still loving these, but the amount of characters that are stupid for the sake of comedy relief is getting to be a bit much. Alexander Hale is hilarious, but with the addition of Warren and now in this book, Murray, it’s just a little annoying. Love love loved the call to action about climate change!

Benjamin is obviously very confused romantically. I too, am not sure why he has such a penchant for Erica. Zoe is way more girlfriend material, and you would think Ben, who has a crush on every girl he sees, would have noticed that before now. They’re a little awkward and the love triangle introduction was weird.

SPY SCHOOL GOES SOUTH is written by Stuart Gibbs. In SPY SCHOOL GOES SOUTH the protagonist Ben Ripley is sent on a mission to do surveillance on SPYDER. At Spy School, they have a Spyder agent in jail, and to be freed he told them where Spyder's base is in Mexico. On the plane ride to Mexico two of Ben's friends snuck on tojoin the mission with Ben and Erica who is the best student at Spy School.
However the pilots of the plane were Spyder agents readyto kill them. If you enjoy books that are action packed and have a little mystery on what Spyder will do next.

Very nice, very nice. This one was a bit more tension-filled than most (and I'm talking about personal life/drama type of tension), so that was a bit stressful, but other than that it was good! Personally, I like Zoe better than Erica because she's more open with her feelings, but I feel like it could go either way. Also Mike and Zoe??? Maybe? I don't know, it's all really open to changes at this point.
